It is believed that rubbing until the scalp begins to tingle with heat, activates sebaceous glands, increases blood circulation, and makes the hair grow healthy. Amla oil, made by boiling dry pieces of amla in coconut oil, is said to promote hair growth. A mixture of equal quantities of fresh amla and lime juice, used as a shampoo, is believed to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss.
Baldness occurs in both men and women, and, cases other than temporary treatment related hair loss such as chemotherapy, baldness is known to be genetic. According to the rules of genetics, if your mother’s father (your maternal grandfather) was bald, there is a 90% chance that you will be genetically predisposed to baldness. Constantly wearing hats, caps, hard hats, etc. is an external cause of hair loss. The most prevalent and important cause of hair loss is inadequate nutrition.
Good Nutrition: Essential nutrients, and a good, well-balanced diet, contribute to the lack of hair loss in many. Poor nutrition causes hair loss, because the body simply does not have the fuel it needs to maintain health and appearance. Diets rich in liberal quantities of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits, supplemented with milk, vegetable oils, honey, wheat germ, yeast, and liver, are especially beneficial in preventing hair loss due to poor nutrition.
Those who lack vitamin B-12 and lack sufficient folic acid in their diets, lose their hair. A sufficient intake of vitamin B-12 and folic acid has been proven to regrow hair. Baldness has also been linked to anxiety, chronic stress, worry, and chronic illnesses such as typhoid, syphilis, chronic colds, bronchitis, influenza, and anemia. Poor hygiene causes the condition of the scalp to weaken and block the hair roots, because they are blocked with oil and/or dirt.

Money, good homes and friendship in all walks of life is what God has promised us—the God Who came in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, to Whom praises are due forever, the Finder and Redeemer of us who were lost from our people and country for the past 400 years.
Fard Muhammd, to Whom praises are due forever, promised to us who believe and have accepted the true religion, Islam—the religion of our fathers, which is entire submission to the Will of God.
He now offers to set us in heaven at once. The base of heaven is: being free from want; free from our enemies; having a good home—a place of peace and rest; and having friendship. Without friendship in all walks of life, money and good homes count for nothing.
If we are not to submit to the will of the devil, (White race), then there is no alternative for us except to submit to a God of righteousness—a God Who is now beginning to make preparations for a universal government of righteousness, justice and peace, for a nation of righteousness—a nation which is in and under the name of righteousness.
This world has money and good homes, but does not have friendship in all walks of life. These are the things that God promised the Lost and Found members of the Black nation. From the Book of Genesis in the Bible to the Book of Revelation, these scriptures close with the Lost-Found with God and God with the Lost-Found in a heavenly condition of life. The Holy Qur’an begins with teachings that serve as the proper qualifications necessary for the entrance of the Lost-Founds into the enjoyment of heaven while they live. ENTIRE submission to the Will of Allah takes away fear and grief. (Holy Qur’an, second chapter): "Those who submit and keep up prayer and spend in the cause of righteousness (charity) are those who enjoy heaven at once." This is what Allah, in the Person of Master
This is why He demands us to go in the names of God, which are righteous names. The names of the wicked shall perish, but the names of God shall live forever. These names we are getting from God and we are now being called by them—names which, in themselves, will save the so-called Negroes from eternal destruction. Without God’s Promise of money, good homes and friendship in all walks of life, we could never hope for heaven on earth. But this promise shows that He offers to you and me the proper things that are necessary for the enjoyment of heaven while we live. God did not come to make us poor, but to make us rich. Read your Bible and Qur’an. He found me in want and now has made me free from want. If you take note, all of my followers who believe as I believe, and who obey me, are not in

the condition of poverty and want that they were in before they believed. Their conditions have changed for the better. They have peace of mind; better and cleaner homes; money; and are contented. They would be ashamed to ask the city to clean up their quarters. They believe and know that it is their duty to keep clean homes and maintain personal cleanliness. We, the so-called Negroes, the Lost and Found people of our kind, have been without friends and without the necessities of life. We have had inadequate shelter, filth and disease ever since the devil, John Hawkins (the first slave trader), brought us from Africa in chains.
There is no justice for Negroes under the rule of the White people, as you now can plainly see. The government will not grant you civil rights nor human rights without a war. We would be fools to want to stay with such a people, when God is calling for us to submit to Him so that He can set us in heaven at once and grant us money, good homes and friendship in all walks of life. This is heaven on earth for all sane, civilized people.
(Reprinted from Muhammad Speaks newspaper, September 23, 1966.
Now, the end has come, and we should no longer remain in the chains of the power of our slave-masters. We are free. We should leave him and his people and go to a place on this earth that we can call our own, instead of getting brick-bats and trying to brick-bat the slave-master our of his house. Submit to God, Who promised us money, good homes and friendship in all walks of life. This promise is true today, for we are an example. The whole of the Black man’s world becomes our friends upon our believing in Allah and His true religion, Islam. There are tens of thousands of us throughout the country who can bear witness to this. Allah’s promise is ever true. The devil (White race) will make you promises but will not fulfill them, except for the evil promises. He will always fulfill these kinds of promises because that is what he is—100 percent evil and wicked. The fool who loves him will say he is not evil and wicked, but that is because he is so blindly in love with the devil (White race).

'No one respects a beggar, and up until now we are beggars for a job, clothing, and education from the White man. No, Black man, the time has now arrived where you must beg no man. You must get up and do it for yourself.' BY THE HONORABLE MINISTER LOUIS FARRAKHAN
[Editor’s note: The following timely article is taken from an article printed in The Final Call newspaper, Volume 1, Number 4.]
ployment among our people will continue to rise because the poor will not be able to afford to get back into the city to obtain and maintain their jobs.
In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful. Look at what is going on in our communities around the country. There is a scheme by wealthy White financiers to buy up all of the old property in the ghetto. These same wealthy financiers are also sending money into the Black community to foment gang warfare. The motion picture “The Warriors” is a prime example of the glorification of gang warfare, and their preying on the weak and helpless. This type of activity is forcing Black people to leave the inner-city areas. If this tactic does not work, arsonists are sent in to burn down the houses of Black and Puerto Rican people, many times killing family members while they are asleep, so that the Blacks and Puerto Ricans will move out. These same White financiers and banks then move in, buy up the property, tear down the shabby buildings, and build high rise condominiums that the poor and Black cannot afford to live in. This forces us into other ghettos away from the inner city, or out into the suburbs. With the price of gasoline skyrocketing, unem-
Financial Institutions and the Black Community We must make the business world more accountable to us also. Take, for example, the situation of banks and their relationship to the Black community. Black people put millions of dollars into these banks, but get little or no benefits in return. They take our money and invest it, but the Black community reaps nothing because the banks do not invest within the Black community. They take our money and build houses that we cannot live in. We can no longer tolerate this behavior. The banks that we do business with must become more responsive to our needs. Another example is the insurance companies, especially Black-owned insurance companies. We want to see these insurance companies invest back into our own communities Spend Money Wisely

give treatment to our sick and wounded? This is how our monies must be spent today if we, as a people, are going to survive.
At one point in the history of this country, the Black man picked cotton for White people. We must now pick cotton for ourselves, and turn it into lint, and cloth, so that we can make clothing for our people. Why should we continue to be the slaves of these freaks from Europe who are designing the indecent styles of clothing that Black people are wearing? Look at us. We all wear shoes, but we have no shoe factories. If the cattle gives its hide to the Caucasian people so that they can take that hide, tan it, and make shoes for themselves, would not the same cattle give their hides to you and me? Was it not a Black man who invented the machine which revolutionized the shoe industry? Yet we profit nothing from his genius. According to government economists, last year Black people spent over $100 billion. If we took the aggregate income of Black people, some scholars submit that we would be the ninth richest country in the world. However, countries that are poorer than we, are providing education, jobs, and medical needs for their people. They are building roads, highways, and all kinds of housing, with less money than the Black man in America has to spend.

10 Muhammad’s Example The Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a mighty example of doing for self for the Black man of America. Many said the Muslims operated mom and pop stores, and made mockery of our humble beginnings. However, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad lifted up a light for all to see. He was not working with the “best minds” in the country, but with those that society labeled as social misfits, the outcast and
the cities where we live; if White people saw us taking over clothing, shoe, and food stores in our neighborhoods rather than allowing Jews, Arabs, and every other nationality to sell us everything, they would then tip their hats, bow their heads and admit, “Now, the Black man is worthy of respect, because he respects himself.” No one respects a beggar, and up until now we are beggars for a job, clothing, and education from the White man. No, Black man, the time has now arrived where you must beg no man. You must get up and do it for yourself.
the prisoners. There were very few people who worked with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who were highly trained and highly learned. Yet, he showed us how to pool our resources, go to the earth and farm, thereby giving us the ability to do that which would one day enable us to be independent, and gain the respect of the civilized people of the world. The Value of Land In the last ten years Black people in America have lost over 5 million acres of land through fraudulent tax schemes, ignorance, and negligence. Many Black Brothers and Sisters have relatives in the South who have land. However, despite having the education necessary to aid them, many of you will not secure the land for your mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers. Therefore, our enemies are allowed to take the land back from them, thus making you and me totally dependent upon them for sustenance. Take the responsibility of making sure the taxes are paid, so that the land will stay in the hands of your family. Do not be so quick to sell the land for a few quickly declining dollars. We must hold on to our land, for as the dollar loses its value, the earth becomes more valuable. If that land can produce corn or wheat, it will be far more valuable to us in a few days, than all the dollar bills you can manage to accumulate. Look at all the land in Georgia. Why do we not buy some of it to build kilns, make bricks and construct our own homes? Cannot we cut down trees and turn the trees into lumber, and build homes for ourselves? While the dollar still has a little value, let us purchase as much productive land as possible, for the earth will never lose its value if taken care of and properly cultivated.

Without the financial necessities, it can be a challenge to get through your daily life. This is when family comes in and help you in any way that they can. They will be your strong support system when push comes to shove. But what if, both of these essentials have been completely removed in your life. What are you going to do then? Read on to learn more about how to survive and take steps to rise from nothing.. Do not lose hope. These four extremely important words say it all. Without hope, you will never get out of this difficult situation. You have to understand that hope is what drives you, this is what motivates you to remove yourself from this misery of helplessness and be the person that you really are. That can support you. That can will help you move out from poverty and it will become your job. Your job does not need to be fancy. The important thing is, you can pay for your shelter, food and clothes. These are the basic necessities that will ascertain your survival and a key to unlock the door to better living.

It is really admirable to see these people still stand up with their heads held high, still trying to make things work with a smile in their hearts and faces. 1.Start spending time with the right people. – These are the people you enjoy, who love and appreciate you, and who encourage you to improve in healthy and exciting ways. They are the ones who make you feel more alive, and not only embrace who you are now, but also embrace and embody who you want to be, unconditionally.
Remember today, for it is the beginning. Today marks the start of a brave new future.
They don’t want you going out building for Self. They want you to ask them to build. That means you are their slave. He doesn’t want you going out farming even as much as making your own food. That means that you soon will be stuffing your stomachs with bread and meat that you raised, and he cannot profit from that. Think it over. That is what we are learning from The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad And it is the sure Truth. So dear readers we invite you to re-
2. Start facing your problems head on. – It isn’t your problems that define you, but how you react to them and recover from them. Problems will not disappear unless you take action. Do what you can, when you can, and acknowledge what you’ve done. It’s all about taking baby steps in the right direction, inch by inch. These inches count, they add up to yards and miles in the long run. 3.Start being honest with yourself about everything. – Be honest about what’s right, as well as what needs to be changed. Be honest about what you want to achieve and who you want to become. Be honest with every aspect of your life, always. Because you are the one person you can forever count on. Search your soul, for the truth, so that you truly know who you are. Once you do, you’ll have a better understanding of where you are now and how you got here, and you’ll be better equipped to identify where you want to go and how to get there. search for yourself. And in this article we want to share with you some advise that may help you. “I would love to see you revisit the teachings of the most Honorable Elijah Muhammad. And perhaps you can fit what you find here in to what you may know.
4.Start making your own happiness a priority. – Your needs matter. If you don’t value yourself, look out for yourself, and stick up for yourself, you’re sabotaging yourself. Remember, it IS possible to take care of your own needs while simultaneously caring for those around you. And once your needs are met, you will likely be far more capable of helping those who need you most.
“ I offer you , a positive ‘to-do’ list for the upcoming year – 30 things to start doing for yourself:
5. Start being yourself, genuinely and proudly. – Trying to be anyone else is a waste of the person you are. Be yourself. Embrace that individual inside you that has ideas, strengths and beauty like no one else. Be the person you

know yourself to be – the best version of you – on your terms. Above all, be true to YOU, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it. 6.Start noticing and living in the present. – Right now is a miracle. Right now is the only moment guaranteed to you. Right now is life. So stop thinking about how great things will be in the future. Stop dwelling on what did or didn’t happen in the past. Learn to be in the ‘here and now’ and experience life as it’s happening. Appreciate the world for the beauty that it holds, right now. 7. Start valuing the lessons your mistakes teach you. – Mistakes are okay; they’re the stepping stones of progress. If you’re not failing from time to time, you’re not trying hard enough and you’re not learning. Take risks, stumble, fall, and then get up and try again. Appreciate that you are pushing yourself, learning, growing and improving. Significant achievements are almost invariably realized at the end of a long road of failures. One of the ‘mistakes’ you fear might just be the link to your greatest achievement yet. 8.Start being more polite to yourself. – If you had a friend who spoke to you in the same way that you sometimes speak to yourself, how long would you allow that person to be your friend? The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others. You must love who you are or no one else will. 9.Start enjoying the things you already have. – The problem with many of us is that we think we’ll be happy when we reach a certain level in life – a level we see others operating at – your boss with her corner office, that friend of a friend who owns a mansion on the beach, etc. Unfortunately, it takes awhile before you get there, and when you get there you’ll likely have a new destination in mind. You’ll end up spending your whole life working toward something new without ever stopping to enjoy the things you have now. So take a quiet moment

Smile because you can. Choose happiness. Be the change you want to see in the world. Be happy with who you are now, and let your positivity inspire your journey into tomorrow. Happiness is often found when and where you decide to seek it. If you look for happiness within the opportunities you have, you will eventually find it. the right reasons. – Enter new relationships with dependable, honest people who reflect the person you are and the person you want to be. Choose friends you are proud to know, people you admire, who show you love and respect – people who reciprocate your kindness and commitment. And pay attention to what people do, because a person’s actions are much more important than their words or how others represent them. 14. Start giving new people you meet a chance. – It sounds harsh, but you cannot keep every friend you’ve ever made. People and priorities change. As some relationships fade others will grow. Appreciate the possibility of new relationships as you naturally let go of old ones that no longer work. Trust in Allah and make good judgment. Embrace new relationships, knowing that you are entering into unfamiliar territory. Be ready to learn, be ready for a challenge, and be ready to meet someone that might just change your life forever. 15.Start competing against an earlier version of yourself. – Be inspired by others, appreciate others, learn from others, but know that competing against them is a waste of time. You are in competition with one person and one person only – yourself. You are competing to be the best you can be. Aim to break your own personal records. 16. Start cheering for other people’s victories. – Start noticing what you like about others and tell them. Having an appreciation for how amazing the people around you are leads to good places – productive, fulfilling, peaceful places. So be happy for those who are making progress. Cheer for their victories. Be thankful Hammer Magazine.biz SELF DESIGNED & REFINED FOR THE MODERN TIME!

for their blessings, openly. What goes around comes around, and sooner or later the people you’re cheering for will start cheering for you. 17. Start looking for the silver lining in tough situations. – When things are hard, and you feel down, take a few deep breaths and look for the silver lining – the small glimmers of hope. Remind yourself that you can and will grow stronger from these hard times. And remain conscious of your blessings and victories – all the things in your life that are right. Focus on what you have, not on what you haven’t. 18. Start forgiving yourself and others. – We’ve all been hurt by our own decisions and by others. And while the pain of these experiences is normal, sometimes it lingers for too long. We relive the pain over and over and have a hard time letting go. Forgiveness is the remedy. It doesn’t mean you’re erasing the past, or forgetting what happened. It means you’re letting go of the resentment and pain, and instead choosing to learn from the incident and move on with your life. 19. Start helping those around you. – Allah cares about us. We should care about us and others too. Care about people. Guide them if you know a better way. The more you help others, the more they will want to help you. Love and kindness begets love and kindness. And so on and so forth. 20.Start listening to your own inner voice. – Allah is the inner voice that we must learn to listen to better. Discuss your ideas with Allah and those closest to you, but give yourself enough room to follow your own intuition. Be true to yourself. Say what you need to say. Do what you know in your heart is right.
21.Start being attentive to your stress level and take short breaks.– Slow down. Breathe. Give yourself permission to pause, regroup and move forward with clarity and purpose. When you’re at your busiest, a brief recess can rejuvenate your mind and increase your productivity. These short breaks will help you regain your sanity and reflect on your recent actions so you can be sure they’re in line with your goals. 22.Start noticing the beauty of small moments. – Instead of waiting for the big things to happen – marriage, kids, big promotion, winning the lottery – find happiness in the small things that happen every day. Little things like having a quiet cup of coffee in the early morning, or the delicious taste and smell of a homemade meal, or the pleasure of sharing something you enjoy with someone else, or holding hands with your partner. Noticing these small pleasures on a daily basis makes a big difference in the quality of your life. 23.Start accepting things when they are less than perfect. – Remember, ‘perfect’ is the enemy of ‘good.’ One of the biggest challenges for people who want to improve themselves and improve the world is learning to accept things as they are. Sometimes it’s better to accept and appreciate the world as it is, and people as they are, rather than to trying to make everything and everyone conform to an impossible ideal. No, you shouldn’t accept a life of mediocrity, but learn to love and value things when they are less than perfect. 23.Start accepting things when they are less than perfect. – Remember, we all have imper-

fections. One of the biggest challenges for people who want to improve themselves and improve self is learning to accept things as they are. Sometimes it’s better to accept and appreciate the world as it is, and people as they are, rather than to trying to make everything and everyone conform to an impossible ideal. No, you shouldn’t accept a life of mediocrity, but learn to love and value things when they are less than perfect. 24.Start working toward your goals every single day. – Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Whatever it is you dream about, start taking small, logical steps every day to make it happen. Get out there and DO something! The harder you work the luckier you will become. While many of us decide at some point during the course of our lives that we want to answer our calling, only an astute few of us actually work on it. By ‘working on it,’ I mean consistently devoting oneself to the end result. 25.Start being more open about how you feel. – If you’re hurting, give yourself the necessary space and time to heal, but be open about it. Talk to those closest to you. Tell them the truth about how you feel. Let them listen. The simple act of getting things off your chest and into the open is your first step toward feeling good again. 26. Start taking full accountability for your own life. – Own your choices and mistakes, and be willing to take the necessary steps to improve upon them. Either you take accountability for your life or someone else will. And when they do, you’ll become a slave to their ideas and dreams instead of a pioneer of your own. You are the only one who can directly control the outcome of your life. And no, it won’t always be
easy. Every person has a stack of obstacles in front of them. But you must take accountability for your situation and overcome these obstacles. Choosing not to is choosing a lifetime of mere existence. 27.Start actively nurturing your most important relationships. – Bring real, honest joy into your life and the lives of those you love by simply telling them how much they mean to you on a regular basis. You can’t be everything to everyone, but you can be everything to a few people. Decide who these people are in your life and treat them like royalty. Remember, you don’t need a certain number of friends, just a number of friends you can be certain of. 28.Start concentrating on the things you can control. – You can’t change everything, but you can always change something. Wasting your time, talent and emotional energy on things that are beyond your control is a recipe for frustration, misery and stagnation. Invest your energy in the things you can control, and act on them now. 29.Start focusing on the possibility of positive outcomes. – The mind must believe it CAN do something before it is capable of actually doing it. The way to overcome negative thoughts and destructive emotions is to develop opposing, positive emotions that are stronger and more powerful. Listen to your self-talk and replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Regardless of how a situation seems, focus on what you DO WANT to happen, and then take the next positive step forward. No, you can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can control how you react to things. Everyone’s life has positive and negative aspects – whether or not

you’re happy and successful in the long run depends greatly on which aspects you focus on. 30.Start noticing how wealthy you are right now. – Henry David Thoreau once said, “Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.” Even when times are tough, it’s always important to keep things in perspective. You didn’t go to sleep hungry last night. You didn’t go to sleep outside. You had a choice of what clothes to wear this morning. You hardly broke a sweat today. You didn’t spend a minute in fear. You have access to clean drinking water. You have access to medical care. You have access to the Internet. You can read. Some might say you are incredibly wealthy, so remember to be grateful for all the things you do have.

In New Year's Day interview, Minister Farrakhan announced 52week lecture series CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) - In a wideranging year end interview, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan offered analysis of the year that was and insight into what is to come in 2013. He also announced an historic 52-week series of messages, “The Time and What Must Be Done,” which will officially begin January 12 and be available via the Internet, YouTube, cable access television, radio and on MP3/DVD.
the newspaper’s offices. “We intend for the next 52 weeks to deal with the subject that was given by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, The Time and What Must Be Done. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad finished his time among us with a series of lectures called the Theology of Time. And we in this time want our people to understand that time is the yardstick that judges our ac-
Among the issues and topics addressed were concerns about the misuse of entertainment and culture, the serious implications of the popular movie Django in the current racial climate, rising violence in a society spinning out of control, challenges facing President Obama, international affairs and the Nation of Islam minister’s continued effort to reach Black youth. The full end of year interview airs from Jan. 5 to Jan. 11 on www.noi.org or www.finalcall.com. Min. Farrakhan, in answering a question, encouraged single Black mothers to stand firm on solid spiritual and moral ground in raising their sons. Meanwhile, he said, the efforts to remake Black men properly to care for their women and children must be dramatically increased. “The New Year should be a time of deep reflection and commitment, praying that God will help us go through this year and bring us safely into the next,” said Min. Farrakhan, in a New Year’s Day roundtable discussion conducted by the editor of The Final Call, assistant editor Ashahed Muhammad, and staff writer Starla Muhammad at
tions,” said Min. Farrakhan. “If we understand that we are supposed to be free men and women, then we must not act as slaves, that as the Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught me is not good subject and verb agreement. We are in the present and our actions should not be of the past mentality of a slave who sits around begging others, ‘give me,’ ‘give me,’ ‘give me,’ ‘give me.’ No. I’m free now; let me do something for myself. But you (America) should help us— because we gave you all that we had, 310 years of chattel slavery, 150 years as a free slave. We built the economy of the South that fueled the industrial revolution of the North. We fought in every war that America has had, not for our freedom, but for America’s freedom and for the freedom of others who came to America and found the American Dream and built it on the nightmare of Black existence. It’s time now for the Black man and woman to realize it’s on us to make a future for ourselves, and our children and our unborn generations. And I will be doing everything I can in this year to provide that guidance but I am telling you as the Qur’an says, ‘By the time surely man is in loss, except those who believe and do good and enjoin one another to truth and enjoin one another to patience.’ The time will judge our actions and if our actions are not correspondent to the time we will continue down the road of intense regret over great loss.”

How To Set Up a Household Budget A good home budgeting process will help you manage your money better
If you're not sure where all your money goes, then it may be time for you to create a household budget. A budget is an important tool for keeping your finances in order and monitoring expenses. Here are some tips on how to develop your own household budget: Calculate your monthly income. Most people know how much money they make per year, but that number can be misleading. When developing your budget, you need to calculate your monthly take-home pay (the amount after all of your taxes and other deductions are removed). Besides your monthly take-home pay, be sure to list any extra income you receive from bonuses, commissions, investments, child support and other sources. List your monthly expenses. Make a chart to list all of your monthly expenses. Include everything -- even gas for your car and miscellaneous expenses such as birthday gifts and co-pays for doctor's appointments. If possible, make your chart on a computer spreadsheet using a program like Excel -- that way, you can easily track your expenses each month. This helpful program has a number of possible budget spreadsheets.
Money toward savings -- you should always pay yourself first. Mortgage or rent payment. Insurance (automotive, homeowners, rental and medical insurance premiums). Taxes not already deducted from your paycheck. Utilities like electricity, gas, water, and telephone. Cell phone. Cable or satellite TV. Internet fees. Loans such as car loans, home equity loans, and student loan payments. Credit cards. Groceries. Child care expenses. School tuition. Medical co-pays and prescriptions. Car expenses like fuel and maintenance. Church or charity donations. Entertainment such as dining out and movies. Miscellaneous expenses of vacations, clothing, gifts, etc.
Here are some items that you should include on your monthly expense chart:

23
Add up your expenses. Once you have completed your list, add up the total (once again, if working in a spreadsheet, you can easily put in a formula to calculate your totals). If you're on the right track, your total monthly expenses should be less than your total monthly income. If that's not the case, you need to lower your expenses or find a way to bring in more income. Keeping track of this total (of income versus expenses) is part of the budgeting process. It needs to be done from time to time to make sure you're staying within your monthly household budget. Some of your expenses may be fixed (mortgage, rent, etc.) and some will vary (groceries, gas, gifts). Once you track these expenses over a few months, you can average them out in your overall budget plan. Emergency funds. Learning how to set up a budget means planning for the unexpected as well. After your monthly expenses are calculated, remaining money can be put into an emergency fund. Because we can't plan every expense, it is important that you have an emergency fund for unexpected scenarios (like a sudden car repair). This should be a fund that is separate from your savings account, so that it can be tapped if needed. Ideally it should be built up until it covers six months of your household expenses.
you may want to contribute the maximum amount to that fund. That way, the money will be deducted from your paycheck and you won't even miss it. But 401-K plans are all about saving for your future after retirement, so you should still have a separate savings account as well. What to do about quarterly or yearly expenses. You may have some bills that don't come on a monthly basis. If that's the case, you should set aside the money for these expenses every month anyway, so you're not hit with a big amount once the bill is due. There is nothing wrong with having multiple savings or checking accounts if you find it difficult to "separate" this money from your monthly bill money. Envelope budgeting. If you're finding it hard to stick to your budget, try this method. The envelope budget method involves paying many of your expenses in cash that you have put aside in envelopes organized by spending category. After determining your expenses, you put cash in an envelope for each allotted expense. If you spend about $150 a week on food, you put that amount of cash in the “food” envelope, for example. Once the envelope is empty you don't spend any more in that category. Certain bills like mortgage, rent or utilities may be best paid by check or online, but others work well with this method. There are several online “envelope” systems as well.

More about paying yourself first. Most people have to add up monthly expenses before figuring out what remains to put into savings, but that's really not the best way to plan. If your employer offers a 401-K plan,

As Much as we love our sister Oprah Winfrey, the time has come for her to move over. Yes! Dear family there is a richer sister on the map and she is muslim. Our sister is oil baroness Folorunsho Alakija from Nigeria. Sis. Alakija has been crowned as the richest black woman in the world. The 61-year-old owner of FAMFA Oil Limited a very rich woman — she is estimated to be worth at least $3.2 billion — Alakija started her ascent to financial supremacy in fashion. Born into a wealthy family, Alakija studied fashion design in England back in the ’80s and soon after founded the Nigerian clothing label Supreme Stitches. Her oneof-a-kind creations were worn by the who’s who of African society, quickly making her the premier fashion designer in the West African country. In fact, she has been called one of the “pioneers of Nigerian fashion” and stays connected to the industry through the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FDAN). The well-dressed businesswoman and philanthropist made the switch to oil in 1993 and the rest is history. From the images we were able to dig up of Alakija, she is quite the fashion plate. But when you’ve out-earned the Queen of All Media by approximately $500 million, you’re allowed to wear whatever you want. Alakija also owns a Bombardier Global Express 6000 which she bought earlier this year for a reported $46 million. She is the founder of the Rose of Sharon foundation, a Christian-based charity which gives out small grants to widows.
Alakija is married to Modupe Alakija and they have four grown-up sons together. She also has a grandchild from her first son. Modupe Alakija, her husband is the Chairman of Famfa Oil. Her sons run the company.

A look book has the power to turn a fashion blogger into a spokesperson and an independent designer into a household name. But for entrepreneurs Aaron Kohn and Phil Sandick, starting African Lookbook in 2011 was just another way to share stories. “I was living in Botswana for a couple of years, and then it really hit me how powerful oral history is in bringing together underrepresented, or underreported, groups,” says Sandick, a law student at Northwestern University. The online platform features exclusive interviews with leading African designers and creative entrepreneurs. The stories shared are a reflection of new and old design traditions, serving as a way to connect artistic narratives with leading universities and research institutions. But documenting oral histories is just one part of the site’s overall goal to expand the reach of African-made design products worldwide. With African Lookbook, users are able to easily browse through a selection of carefully curated items such as a vintage crochet bag or a Merino wool sweater (often spotted on the streets of Johannesburg). BlackEnterprise.com caught up with the entrepreneurial duo to discuss the importance of African art, how they balance school with their venture, and how teamwork makes the dream work. The Trust Factor Managing a startup is no small feat when you attend school full time. Based in New York, Kohn is wrapping up a bachelors degree in African Studies at Columbia University, while Sandick, who lives in Chicago, is in the midst of completing a JD-LLM dual-degree program in International Human Rights. But finding a way to work around busy schedules has become routine for Kohn and Sandick. Trusting each other’s understanding of client relationships goes a long way in using time more efficiently. “We are partners on this… I [always] check in with Phil in the evenings to make sure everything is on the right track,” says Kohn.
A Premium on Passion To expand their reach, both partners work with a network of curators and buyers who mirror their own passion for the continent’s artistry. “They are really just doing what they enjoy,” says Kohn. “I think everyone should do something they care about.” The entrepreneurs have made a deliberate effort to connect with African artists who take the extra step, and do their best to completely manufacture goods within the continent. Gareth Cowden, founder of Johannesburg-based label Babatunde, says that partnering with the site earlier this year has given his business a clear advantage. “Shipping to the States can be expensive so it often puts our potential clients from America off… it’s wonderful to be able to refer them to African Lookbook for stock, which eliminates the hefty shipping fees.”
Hammer Magazine.biz SELF DESIGNED & REFINED FOR THE MODERN TIME!
26
Start Small, Then Expand Both Kohn and Sandick have traveled extensively throughout the continent. Despite their collective experiences of living and working in various countries, the two friends have pumped the breaks and made sure the business doesn’t expand too quickly. Sandick believes that taking action on an idea should only happen after thorough research. “Be prepared to pivot wherever the idea goes because there are so many ways to do things,” says the law student. “Who’s to say what’s going to be successful?” The African Lookbook features select items from various regions but, for now, the shop mainly carries goods from countries in Southern Africa. In the next several months, both founders are setting their sights on East Africa. Treat the Customer Like an Insider The exclusive interviews with artists and entrepreneurs on African Lookbook gives customers the inside scoop on the design industry in Africa. “What we are fighting against [is] ignorant African consumerism, dare I even call it ‘otherization,’ where you are like ‘oh, this thing is so cool because it’s from Africa.’ That is so shallow. The thing is cool because it was designed really well… it wasn’t some random European who brought stuff over… it was someone already there, who had really great ideas,” insists Sandick. Choosing to incorporate an editorial component has enhanced the site’s purchasing experience, giving consumers a chance to connect with items beyond price points and stock photos. From Spoek Mathambo, a young South African rapper, to Senegalese furniture designer Ousmane M’Baye, each narrative acts to showcase great products and gives artists a chance to discuss their creative process without being misinterpreted.

THE NATURE OF SACRED MARRIAGE: By Chris H Muhammad, edited by sis. Tracey Muhammad hammermagazine1@gmail.com
Today's a new day for Black marriages. We want you to know that marriages are joined and come apart to a degree that seems extraordinary. But marriages are still meant to be sacred between two people who love each other. The eternal quality and supreme nature of Allah (GOD) is present today in the genetic fiber of the black man and woman. This is the sacredness of self and should be held up in marriages. When we make our marriage vows, the first thing we should do is make them with Allah (God) first. Then with each other. The up coming new year, I'm going to make this plain for you. If Allah (God) is not rooted in each of your lives, don't expect him to fix what you've created. We set ourselves up to fail when we abandon our commitment and marriage to Allah ( God) who originated us. Allah (God) has never abandoned or forsaken us! So if your marriage is headed for a divorce it just maybe because you have abandoned your marriage to Allah (God) and forsaken yourself. Forsaken means completely deserted or left helpless. Did Allah
How can you allow the happiness of your marriage to disappear when something of difficulty shows up. It is the nature of the black man and woman that is born from his Divine origin and Divine intent. That's the meaning of the word "sacred" The word sacred descends from the Latin sacrum, which really refers to Allah (God ) and anything in his power. When something is Holy, it is devoted entirely to the God or the work of God. It cannot be altered by any law or direction under it. Mar-

1. Friendship: Spouses who have a strong friendship have staying power in that they not only love each other, but genuinely like each other. They enjoy spending time together and there is mutual respect. 2. Humor: Spouses who can make each other laugh tend to be good at de-escalating conflicts when they do arise. Couples who have the ability to lighten up a tense moment have a big advantage in that they are able to lighten the mood quickly and possibly derail conflict. The use of funny nicknames can be an indicator of great fondness for one another. The names often stem from a "you had to be there" moment from the beginning of their relationship. 3. Communication: As obvious as this may seem, many couples are not very good at it. Those who are able to openly express their feelings in an emotionally safe environment typically deal with situations as they come up and avoid burying frustrations which always have a way of coming out at some point. 4. Chore Sharing: Those who divvy up the household or parenting responsibilities in a way that is mutually agreed upon are less likely to hold resentments about what they perceive as "unfair." Each participates and contributes to the marriage in this way. 5. Sexual Intimacy: Couples who have their sexual needs met or at least have negotiated a reasonable compromise, if their levels of need aren’t compatible, feel taken care of by the other. Some are highly active, engaging in lovemaking multiple times a week and others are content with far less. There is no "right" or "wrong" here, but if one person is feeling their needs aren’t being met it’s important to talk about it. Work together and find a good solution to this problem if you have one. Remember, it will take both of you to handle this issue. 6. connected to each other, even if it's a simple stroke of the hair, kiss on the cheek or playful tap on the rear. These moments don’t necessarily lead to sexual intimacy but are rather easy ways to say, "I love you and we’re connected" without the words. Some households are so chaotic between jobs, kids and life that these brief shows of affection can be grounding when everything else is swirling around you.

7. No "Horsemen of the Apocalypse:" This is a term coined by couple’s researcher, John Gottman, who is able to predict divorce with incredible accuracy. His "four horsemen of the apocalypse" are criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. He has shown that couples who demonstrate a high level of "the horsemen" in their relationships are more likely to divorce. 8. Mutual and Separate Friends: Partners who socialize with other couples and also maintain separate friendships have greater balance in regards to honoring themselves as individuals within the marriage. This leads to more self-satisfaction, which translates to relationship satisfaction. 9. Reliability: It’s human nature to feel good when those we care about follow through behaviorally and we know they will be there. If couples do what they say and say what they do, they create an atmosphere of comfort in knowing their words mean something to the other, which increases emotional safety in the marriage. 10. Relationship Vision: Couples who have created a relationship vision for themselves know where they’re going as they’ve planned it together. They get joy out of reaching for their goals as a team and are less likely to be derailed by surprises down the line. Where do they see themselves in 10 years? What are their marriage and family goals?

Aleena Zahir (formerly known as Brenda) is the 2nd born in a family of 7. She came to birth in 1987 in the Ishaka-Bushenyi District of Uganda, East Africa. Being raised in the Church (her father is a Reverend), she always was interested in reading the scriptures of God and seeking understanding. Even as a little girl she had a strong passion for music and enjoyed singing in the church. Early in life, she knew that singing was a perfect way to express the feelings of her soul. Aleena finally discovered herself a real singer at the age of 12, while at secondary school. She started to write songs of her own which were performed on several occasians in Mbarara, Uganda. At High-School her love for music intensified even more and she wrote songs and very many songs in the line of gospel. After High-School she wanted to establish as a singer. With an odd job in her vacation, she was able to record her first single in 2006. Her first single “It’s all about me” gave her recognition at High-School, and it got fair airplay around the country. However, her ambitions were leading to trouble with her parents, who wanted her to acquire a more respectable job. In the same year she was able to join Makerere University and she made several attempts to get recognized, which included curtain rising for artists at the university and visiting different studios for possible support. Despite her efforts, she was still unnoticed and in confusion about how to achieve her goal. After graduation from the University, the economic situation and hard conditions in Uganda forced her to move into a poor one room house (deep in the Slums)... jobless, hopeless and directionless. Being left in such a desperate situation, she prayed for guidance and knew that only God could save her life. In 2011, she received the answer to her prayers, and for the first time in her life she finally saw the light, not a common light, but a divine light. She found her way to the life-giving teachings of God’s last Messenger, the honorable Elijah Muhammad. All misery and pain was gone, she says: “I found all answers to all my questions; I saw light for the first time in 24 years. I cried out of joy, because I felt the reality and divine power of Messenger Elijah Muhammad.” She accepted the truth of God (Allah) for the first time, and her life began to improve. She initiated a music project which ultimately resulted in african Black Music that the world has never witnessed before. Aleena says in her own words: “Allah was guiding me, because I understood that all my setbacks served a greater purpose. Now I learned who I am. That is why not until today I could unleash my talents to create such a powerful album, which is to bring truth, freedom, justice and equality to my brothers and sisters and the whole world. I can only say, what I learnt became my salvation. And I know it is the salvation for every man, woman and child. We have the power to control our own destiny, and Allah (God) is with us to make this world a better place. We are the Original, and this music is just a small example of the universal change of worlds... reaching our hands from East-Asia to our brothers and sisters in the West. We are Making History." The Peacekeepers Corner “2013 A New Year for the keepers of peace” By Rafika Soaries One good thing about the New Year is that it is certainly another opportunity for selfimprovement and another chance to get it right! As we move into the 2013 New Year take a moment to reflect on the major tenant of the Peacekeepers mission of restoring peace in our communities all over the globe. The basis of peace, accordingly defined by Merriam-Wester.com, is a state of tranquility, freedom from civil disturbance, a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom, freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions and harmony in personal relations. The Peacekeepers’ objective is to take a proactive approach deterring crime and violence with a new intervention where men become maintainers, providers, protectors, and mentors of and for the community. Each area represents a foundational component of a healthy community that is so intricately connected that if there is the slightest break down the community is unhealthy and begins to deteriorate. Not physically unhealthy but mentally or emotionally unhealthy. With the proper diagnosis a treatment can be put in place to restore good health. A good start or treatment for the preparation for our mission this year is to honestly look within to find our peace because that’s where it’s at; within! We have to be at peace with ourselves when we are suited and booted ready to go into the community; into the streets. You can’t calm confrontation when you are a capped volcano ready to explode with the slightest twist. Those rumblings inside of you will be tested when confronted and your response will be influenced by whether you are truly at peace with your inner self. Last year’s confrontations have passed. We have to learn how to leave them there. Let it go. Move on and heal. Release yourself. Breathe. Meditate. Pray. Find new ways to stay on the straight path and remain duly proportioned; not tilted! Think positive thoughts and develop an active strategy to beat down the negatives that whisper into the ears, hearts and minds of men disturbing peace. Change your attitude and you
We call this the Peacekeepers Corner because the corner as always been a good meeting place for many of us. What is a corner? It is the point where converging lines, edges, or sides meet. It is a private, secret, or remote place. A Corner is a position from which escape or retreat is difficult or impossible. Now anything secret is kept from knowledge or view. Let‘s be clear. This in no way is designed to keep anyone from what the sure truth is. This is the point where we move ourselves into positions in truth to better help others escape or retreat from difficulties. Every corner should have a Peace Keeper present. And every Peace Keeper should be present in and on the corners of our lives responding to the needs of who ever is coming out of difficulties. Please visit www.thepeacekeepers.org join the mighty work of the Peace Keepers.
