Welcome to the very ßrst edition of 2 0 2 . During this time, I¶m habitually inclined to hark back to the happenings from the past 1 2 months. Despite the obvious lingering COVID- related challenges, it¶s clear to see what a surprisingly optimistic year 2 0 1 has been. There were numerous positives that came to light ‡ specißcally in the world of architecture, construction and design. We embraced several industry breakthrough welcomed sector-wide technological adoptions ‡ not just up and down the country, but throughout the world ‡ and conclusively opened our eyes to the environmental destruction that we¶ve instigated. A leading example of the industry¶s technologic advancements is the world¶s ßrst 3 D- printed school in Malawi, which was built with minimal material use and carbon footprint at a record speed, having been printed in 1 8 hours. More generally, however, was the rife utilisation of artißcial intelligence ( AI) i helping to support infection control in our public buildings. And, of course, let¶s the pledges and heightened awareness of building for a greener, cleaner planet that aros from autumn¶s COP2 6 , too. Overall, the architectural and construction ßeld has been a hiv of alterations, tech adoptions and eco mindfulness.

VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY

Taking brickwork off the critical build path, developers can build two storeys ahead of tradition methods without compromising quality or thermal performance. In some projects, it has taken as littl as nine days to get to internal works. T he Porotherm system is delivered straight to site ready to be installed with the accompanying bagged mortar, which is applied using a mechanica roller. It reduces wastage because site teams need to only mix what they use and ensures consistency of mortar. S peed of build also results in preliminar savings regarding site cabins and crane use.

Weathertight and breathable

T here is another huge benefit, particularly when considering the thermal performance of the buildin M ulti- cellular clay block walling is delivered virtually at equilibrium moisture content, around due to the kiln- fired production process. Provided i protected when going up, it will remain at equilibriu which supports thermal performance and enables the property to reach equilibrium far quicker. It is breathable, reducing excess humidity insi the property, and the construction process also minimises the amount of water being imparted from mortar to other building components. The thin join system requires up to 9 5 % less water for blockwork construction compared to a traditional build. N egating most of the moisture during construc ensures thermal performance is achieved far quick whilst no drying shrinkage cracking also means virtually no snagging for a better quality build. In we have never carried out snagging on a Porotherm property due to cracking from blockwork. T his is even before you consider the benefits of thin- joint masonry for ongoing thermal performanc In a traditional build, mortar takes up around 6 . 7 % of the wall area. With thin- joint, multi- cellular clay block walling, it is around 0 . 4 % . The mortar not only goes off quicker ( there is no need for a 1 . 5 m build height restriction before the mortar goes off ) , but it also reduces the impact of thermal and moisture bridging through mortar joints.

INFECTION CONTROL

INFECTION CONTROL AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT Infection control has always been a top priority. From a young age, we are instructed on the importance of behaviours such as hand-washing to keep pesky bacteria at bay. However, infection control is an area that people have become more aware of since the pandemic began. As we continue to live with the virus, its importance will only maintain momentum. Infection control is essential from a built environment perspective; we spend 90% of our time indoors, which means these spaces must hit the mark on safety and comfort. With this in mind, what do specifiers have to look out for in 2022? SONTAY

an unbuilt environment. Without the technology, this would be a longer process; thankfully, Hololens gives everyone the earlier engagement that they need. It will also serve as a clear audit trail of which changes have been made, creating that all- important golden thread of information. Plus, it ensures sign offs are completed in a far quicker timeframe. ‚As well as giving bettervisibility of any changes, the AR technology is enabling collaboration, something that has been repeatedly called for in construction,„ explains James. ‚What¶s more, all approved drawings are uploaded into the helmet. You can then collaborate with other users using the same equipment to align, navigate and measure the model in a real- time, trueto- life space. This enables seamless integration. We can also manipulate the modelwhilst on site, which is an added bonus. When it comes to onsite installation, everything is there; everything is cut and manufactured to the detailing in the model. The eciency of the modelling is second to none, and it is keeping project teams better connected.„ On completion, 6-8 Bishopsgate is set to be a striking addition to London¶s skyline. The use ofmixed reality technologyon this project is assuring collaboration andvisibility; two factors that arevitalrequirements in today¶s modern construction industry.

B oth laminates and melamines offer an easy way to improve existing surfaces. Made up of layers of decorative paper that are glued together before undergoing heat and pressure treatment, their advantage is that they are available in a wide range of styles and finishes. This provides great design choice and flexibility whatever the project. For those looking at the premium end, XyloCleaf is top of the list. Available exclusively through Lathams in the UK, the range includes melamine- faced panels, laminates and edgings. The unique Thermo S tructured surface results in deep textures and intricate details th make it difficult to distinguish XyloCl from the real material it is designed to mimic, which include stone, linen, metallic and woodgrain finishes. T he tool calculates environmental impact by looking at the carbon footprint of products, from production through to delivery to Lathams¶ depots. It also looks at how much carbon is stored within the wood¶s structure, known as biogenic carbon. Products are then rated according to a confidence level, which is determined based on the quality of the data points that have been reviewed. To increase visibility for customers, the carbon data will be added to all invoices, delivery notes, and other key documentation. Some of the top- rated products are from manufacturers such as Accsys Technologies, which produces modified timber Accoya, and UPM Plywood, home to WIS A plywood. Because of the quality of the materials, they can be installed as is¶, making them very popular with designers looking for an exposed wood finish from a quality, environmentallyfriendly product.

THIS WINTER, SEAL IT WITH E N E RG Y EFFICIENT TAPES ISO C EMI

The improved energy efficiency of the whole window installation, not just the frame, can be provided this winter with ISO BLO C O 600 self-adhesive sealant tapes from ISO - Chemie. The precompressed tapes, which have been independently tested and are both BBA and P a ssivhaus certified, can be used on joints up to 4 2 mm, providing a high-performance weathertightness and thermal/ acoustic insulation seal for fenestration applications. Q u ickly applied by hand around the frame during fitting, ISO BLO C O O N E 600 are energy-rated, weathertight, thermal and acoustic tapes that reduce heat loss and noise ingress to a U-value better, or equal, to the frame. This assures property and homeowners that a comprehensive ‘A’-rated installation can be completed, rather than just an ‘A’-rated window supplied. The tapes can be used to seal joints, providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. The product can accommodate a temperature range of -3 0° to + 9 0° and is impermeable to driving rain with a minimum of 600 P a , making it one of the best-performing tapes in its class.

The client wanted to keep the natural colour and enhance the grain of the wood. Having used Osmo products before, S am and Josh tried some samples and recommended Osmo Polyx- Oil Clear 3 0 3 2 . Osmo Polyx- Oil delivers a highly- durable and hard-wearing ßnish that is verywater and dirt resistant. It is also resistant t common liquid spillages, making it ideal for a dining table. The product enhances the wood¶s natural character and delivers a microporous, breathable ßnish that does not crack, peel or ake. T he team applied two coats of the clear Osmo Polyx- Oil with a brush. After the first coat, they lightly re- sanded ( by hand) , cleaned and then applied the second and final coat. They sanded in between as the wood grain raises after the first coat so this process really helped to get that perfectly- smooth surface. It will certainly help us going forward. The customer was delighted with the table¶s finish and ordered a shelf to match, which we also finished using Osmo Polyx- Oil. They love the natural colours and features of the wood and, whilst it¶s clear¶, it still gives that great protection from stains wear and tear. We are huge fans of Osmo products as they are great quality, easy to apply and really do enhance the beauty of the wooden furniture we make.„
