see the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP tackle the topic of what and where should we invest in green infrastructure to get the maximum benefit. Channel 4 television presenter and journalist Krishnan GuruMurthy will join Fallon as part of the ‘Making Construction Happen’ stream to cover ‘Is the NPPF delivering on its promise of ‘sustainable development?’ Following the Government’s redefinition of zero carbon, cut backs on renewables subsidies and watered down Part L of the Building Regulations, former Chief Construction Adviser Paul Morrell OBE joins the Ecobuild line-up on 5th March to head up a lively debate to answer the all important question ‘Is this the end of the road for zero carbon?’ Taking on what is set to be a energetic debate on Ecobuild’s third day (7th March 2013), Sir David King, Former Chief Scientific Advisor, Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) will ask the thought-provoking question ‘Is there a future for nuclear?’ Tom Broughton, Brand Director for Ecobuild comments: “Ecobuild has hosted a wealth of big name speakers in recent years and the 2013 conference programme is no exception. This year, they will each be joined by a specially selected panel of industry chiefs to engender debate and impart best practice across their industry areas. “The exciting new mix of features and content has been developed as a direct result of listening closely to Ecobuild’s stakeholders to ensure that debate, discussion and innovation remains at the heart of Ecobuild. We have drawn upon expertise within UBM and the wider sustainable built environment to create an offering which is relevant, engaging and most of all, inspirational.”
Turning grey to green Addressing the environmental impact of the world’s cities is top of the agenda at Ecobuild 2013, where significant investment has been made to impart best practice for design and management of the urban environment andmore critically, where funding could be committed to support the vital skills required to make this step change. In the ‘Working with Nature’ Zone, The Green Infrastructure Pavilion in association with DEFRA will bring together ministers, government officials and leaders from DECC, DEFRA, CIRIA as well as a wealth of industry chiefs to lead big debates, policy announcements and challenge future thinking. An important focus on planning will see chair Ian Phillips, Independent Chartered Landscape Architects and Town Planner joined by experts from The National Forest Company, Lockhart Garratt and Hertfordshire County Council.

Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slate used on a new-build West Sussex farmhouse
Facilitating innovative design
At this year’s Ecobuild, Marley Eternit will be showcasing the sustainability benefits of fibre cement slates and unveiling some innovative additions to the range, as well as demonstrating further proof of the company’s own environmental credentials.
M
arley Eternit will be exhibiting its range of fibre cement slates, which can not only achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification but also have BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing accreditation and a low carbon footprint of just 12.7 CO2e/m2 (based on 600 x 300 slate at 100mm lap), as independently certified by Carbon Trust Certification Ltd. Not only will visitors to the stand be able to find out about the whole life cycle sustainability properties of fibre cement but they will also be able to witness the versatility of this well established construction material for themselves, by sitting on furniture entirely made from fibre cement. The company is also pleased to announce that its popular Birkdale slate will be available with a new fixing to facilitate lower pitch designs. The slate creates more flexible design opportunities for specifiers, designers and contractors alike, reaching pitches as low as 15°. In addition, visitors to the stand at Ecobuild will be able to see a demonstration
of BIM Space, Marley Eternit’s set of free to download Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects, which for the first time will include fibre cement slates. Sarah Harding, Marketing Manager from Marley Eternit, explains: “We wanted to launch BIM for our fibre cement slates at Ecobuild because it is starting to play such an important role in helping specifiers create developments faster, more economically and with less environmental impact. This complements the BIM objects already available on our range of facades and Cedral Weatherboard.
limestone and shale in clinker production, the essential ingredients for Portland cement. Using fibre cement in this way not only removes 100% of the fibre cement waste but also increases the sustainability of clinker production. “The advent of BIM also means that environmental labelling of products is becoming even more important and manufacturers need to be able to demonstrate their sustainability credentials across a broader range of areas. We will be using Ecobuild, not only to demonstrate sustainable product innovation but also to further prove our strong environmental credentials as the only roofing manufacturer in the UK to achieve independent carbon footprint certification for a range of products by Carbon Trust Certification Ltd. The last year has also seen us receive BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing accreditation on our full range of roofing products.” The new and improved version of Marley Eternit’s ground-breaking Ecologic tile, Nimbus Grey, will also be on display at this year’s Ecobuild. The tile has a unique pollution-eating coating that absorbs Nitrogen Oxide NOx pollutants and converts them into soluble nitrates that are washed away harmlessly with rainwater. In addition to this benefit, EcoLogic tiles also contain a much higher level of recycled material than standard concrete tiles.

designers understood that a sophisticated balustrade can be the ‘crown jewel’ in a project, a breathtaking design element that combines safety with style. Their attention to detail therefore included specifying the use of our high-quality glass railing systems both indoors and outdoors for use on the project’s staircases, walkways and balconies. Using a unique top- or side-mounted aluminium profile they securely hold the glass in place with dry wedges made from EPDM rubber. These systems are adaptable for all kinds of situation with optional end pieces and designed for a variety of handrails and glass thicknesses. Most importantly as the name suggests they are easy to install in difficult situations, saving on time and money.

S
ponsorship of Climate Week – which runs from 4-10th March – reinforces Crown’s long-standing commitment to the environment. The company’s awardwinning programme Earthbalance sets the standard in embedding sustainability at the heart of a business and has seen Crown gain increasing recognition as being among the top tier of sustainable businesses in the UK. Earthbalance’s progress made to date has seen Crown secure a clutch of high profile accolades in 2012, including the Sustainable Innovation Award from the British Coatings Federation, and the Sustainable Business Award For Large Companies from the Lancashire Business Environment Awards. On its stand, the team from Crown will be highlighting how the company’s approach can support specification professionals in areas including reduced waste streams, the achievement of BREEAM ratings and products offering extended maintenance cycles. In 2008, Crown launched Earthbalance a dedicated sustainability programme, featuring an ambitious, long-term target to drive down its own greenhouse gas emissions, with the target of a 10% reduction in 2015 – and 25% in 2020. These two targets are in addition to a sustainability target of zero waste to landfill, originally targeted for December
14
2012 – which was achieved more than 12 months ahead of schedule. Crown’s investment in carbon footprinting technology is helping the company achieve these targets. This process enables the company to measure the footprint of all products across its range, including the specification brands of Crown Trade, Sadolin and Sandtex Trade, and then make the necessary changes to reduce the carbon output, without affecting the quality of the paint.
Successful programme
Mark Lloyd, Crown Paints’ Sustainability Manager, says: “We are well on track with our green commitment; and results such as the achievement of our zero waste to landfill target more than 12 months ahead of schedule reflects the success of the programme to date. “However, there’s still plenty to do and we see sustainability as a mission for the entire organisation. It’s not just about filling a market niche; it’s about changing the way we do business. “Our focus is to minimise energy, reduce, re-use or recycle waste wherever feasible and develop continuous improvement programmes and innovation initiatives to inspire products and processes with the lowest possible ecological impact. All this is undertaken with an absolute commitment not to affect our products’ performance adversely.
“We also apply responsible raw material sourcing, considering the environmental and ethical effects of raw materials used within our business. “Our focus is not to just provide a few niche ‘green’ products. By measuring and evaluating the carbon footprint of everything we do, we can make improvements, without impacting on the quality of the paint we produce. “This means specifiers can be assured that they benefit from high performing quality paints, which maintain their protective and aesthetic qualities for the longer term – in itself a sustainable outcome.” Also at Ecobuild, Crown will be showing how achieving the right specification for commercial and industrial environments has been made even easier with Crown Paints’ new online tool, PaintSpec Finder. The system, which is free to access at www.crownpaintspec.co.uk, generates tailor-made, accurate and technically detailed specifications in an accessible format, regardless of the complexity or size of the project.

Kerakoll showcases eco-friendly commitment
Kerakoll UK’s ranges of adhesives, grout and surface preparation products have benefited from a commitment to continual research and development into eco-friendly products, formulating them to use fewer natural resources and reduce the impact of building on the environment, whilst maintaining performance. The mineral products in the range significantly reduce CO2 emissions (to less than 250g/kg) because they contain less cementitious binders, and are made with single-component technology that excludes the use of plastic containers. They contain at least 30% recycled materials and can themselves be recycled at the end of their life.At least 60% of their contents are minerals which are harmless to health and the environment and do not emit VOCs, thus lessening the likelihood of Sick Building Syndrome occurring. The company uses its GreenBuilding Rating system to evaluate the sustainability of its products. This was developed in conjunction with leading European research centres as an objective way to assess the overall ecological and environmental characteristics of a product. It won the TTA award for Best Environmental Initiative in 2011.

KdB Insulation Limited is a leading manufacturer of reflective insulation for professional and DIY markets. As the ultra-thin reflective insulation specialist, quality is the company’s first priority. Insulating a building correctly saves energy and money, and will yield a good return on the investment. Very few buildings are insulated correctly. Timber rafters are subject to thermal expansion which cause problems therefore enforcing proper insulation, particularly with rigid boards insulation. Studies have also shown that small pieces on mineral wool can break loose and have negative effects on the skin and severe health concerns if inhaled into the lungs. KdB Insulation’s new HOME ISO-AIRGREEN is a polyester-based, non-irritating, 100% safe-to-use insulation, in roll or flat slab combined with AIRFLEX OR EXPERT50. This hybrid system is totally healthy, sustainable, cost effective and isn’t affected by expansion or contraction of timber frames, thus sealing in heat, cutting down energy costs and saving money.
