The best of the best

The winners of the SBID International Design Awards 2016 have been revealed at another beautiful ceremony at the home of the awards – the prestigious Dorchester hotel in London.

W

inning an SBID International Design Award is truly a high achievement as all 14 categories are assessed by a technical panel, the public vote and a panel of leading industry experts who look for outstanding examples of technical content and aesthetic creativity. Here, Inex takes a look at 2016’s winners. Overall Winner: Adolfsson & Partners Project: King – Sveavägen 44 Location: Stockholm, Sweden Gaming company, King, approached Adolfsson & Partners to develop its workplace concept. Adolfsson & Partners procured and delivered all interior design including the A/V solutions and created an extraordinary experience-based office. Inspired by King’s catalogue of 200 games, the design team created an environment where everyone can move and work in a world of games known as ‘The Kingdom’. Adolfsson & Partners created a colourful, energy-filled office featuring both humorous and intelligent solutions. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Club & Bar Design: Stonehill & Taylor Project: The NoMad Bar Location: New York, United States Stonehill & Taylor’s design team created visual references to the luxurious French aesthetic of this hotel, while also creating a welcoming ‘English pub’ atmosphere at the bar. On the ground floor, the focal point is a 20ft bar that features a large arch, backed by an antique mirror and flanked by custom millwork. A serpentine drink rail, illuminated with signature light sconces, faces expansive windows. On the mezzanine level, Persian rugs cover the herringbone wood flooring, adding warmth and texture to the room.

Healthcare Design: NBBJ Project: University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC) Location: New Orleans, United States UMC’s architecture expresses elegant linear forms that achieve proportion to scale, while resiliency strategies ensure it can withstand and continue delivering treatment amidst natural disaster. Inside, custom graphics and interior design foster a warm setting that distinctly reflects New Orleans. Though it offers critical services for uninsured patients, UMC’s plush surfaces belie those of a typical hospital. Throughout the facility, meditation rooms and five courtyards, adorned with lush vegetation, artwork and reflecting pools promote healing and heighten wellbeing. Hotel Design: Coop Creative Project: Elements of Byron Location: Byron Bay, Australia Elements of Byron is a five-star resort located in the famous surfing town of Byron Bay. The interior brief demanded a world-class resort for international visitors seeking an authentic Australian beach experience. The upbeat and eclectic interior, designed by Rowena Cornwell, draws inspiration from water, fauna and human desire.

The programme team therefore commissioned the British Council’s inhouse property professionals, Global Estates, to adapt the design of these bespoke learning centres to produce a low-cost, pop-up product that can be easily installed in partner schools, British Council adult teaching centres and even shopping centres.

The excellence in craftsmanship makes it possible to create new custom surfaces not just for walls, but also for art installations in public spaces for interior architecture. The Vintage Metal has been used in the renovation of the Hilton Milan lobby as a demonstration of Italian craftsmanship and innovation in the heart of Milan.

Intelligent Design: British Council Project: Learning Time with Shaun & Timmy – Pop-up Learning Centres Locations: Mexico City, Santiago, Cairo, Manama, Kyiv, Madrid, Rabat, Abu Dhabi and Mexico This award-winning partnership sees the British Council combine Englishlanguage-teaching expertise with the creative flair of Aardman Animations to launch learning centres around the world for 2-6-year-olds. Pilot centres in Singapore, Mexico and Chile were successful, but the time and investment required to establish each one proved a challenge.

KBB Design: Diane Berry Kitchens Project: Gold & Black Kitchen Location: Sussex, United Kingdom This luxurious kitchen is a family space that is also ideal for entertaining. The L-shaped island is made of golden glass and granite. It takes centre stage against a stunning backdrop of black glass units that blend perfectly with appliances and Sub-Zero fridges, which have been bespoke sprayed to harmonise beautifully, framed with golden glass. Stepped down on one end of the island is a table in the same granite that gives great views to the garden; the support for the granite is angled subtly to match the detail on the island ends.

Office Design: Beyond Design Architects Project: GLOBANT Location: Pune, India For this project the inspiration was nature. Since the organisation works in a very collaborative way, the theme was then woven with elements that support and encourage coworking. The design style is modern, but has the theme of nature interwoven seamlessly. This extends from the moss found in the reception, the ‘walk in the woods’ towards the cafeteria and the ‘learning tree’ collaborative space, to the acrylic birds in the ceiling and the grass floor in the cafe. Public Space Design: ICHIBANSEN Project: Echigo Tokimeki Resort Setsugekka Location: Niigata Prefecture, Japan Japan-based ICHIBANSEN has unveiled a local sightseeing train, the Echigo Tokimeki Resort Setsugekka. The train consists of just two carriages and has 45 seats in its stylish interior. On board, the walls have been replaced with huge windows that give passengers great views of the ocean and mountains as they travel. Large-scale claddings of recovered timber for floors, walls and ceilings create a consistent visual appearance, which is augmented by selected furniture and materials. Glossy surfaces and deliberately-placed colour accents contrast with matt black steel and elegant, dark natural stone. Restaurant Design: LW Project: Bussola Restaurant Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates LW’s brief was to update and rejuvenate an already wellrenowned, established restaurant, famous for its superb food but not its decor. With the focus always being the terrace, overlooking the hotel pool and the sea, it was important that the interior blended with the exterior, bringing the outside in; with the same finishes flowing from inside out to the terrace where possible. Natural materials and soft lighting were used to create an atmospheric setting, while rustic, reclaimed timbers contrast with luxurious Italian statuario marble, highlighted with a brushed bronze metal finish adding a layer of understated elegance. Retail Design: Bishop Design Project: Fauchon Paris Cafe & Retail Location: Kuwait City, Kuwait Bishop Design’s brief was to establish and create a new, exciting direction and natural evolution of the existing identified brand, it was also a requirement to develop a new gourmet food offering to be incorporated into the interior. The venue was to have a variation in seating types incorporating both a dining and lounge dining experience. Tables were required to be adaptable to a multitude of differing configurations and versatile to the customers’ needs. The venue was to be visually sumptuous and sympathetic to the product, therefore the new concept design direction was to be a natural evolution of the Fauchon brand and an addition to the Fauchon family, a natural multi-faceted extension that would be suited in a mall, a standalone or hotel scenario.

14 INSIGHT

Luxury lifestyle living Growing up near Lake Como in Italy, Maurizio Pellizzoni moved to London in 1998 to undertake a bachelor’s degree in interior architecture at the London Metropolitan University, simultaneously freelancing as a window display designer. Here, he talks to Inex about his creative past and what the future holds for him. Please can you give us a brief description of your professional career? After completing my bachelor’s degree, I went on to spend more than a decade as part of the creative team at Ralph Lauren Home where I directed the presentation of collections in London, Milan and Brussels. In 2007, I founded my own practice with a studio based in the Chelsea design quarter. Since then, I have worked on projects all over the UK and abroad. In the last few years I have completed my first project in the USA and I am currently completing my first debut commercial space for Colbourns. I have also been excited to work on a number of collaborations, including my recent speaker cover design for B&O Play’s iconic Beoplay A9 music system, exclusively for Harrods. INEX-ONLINE.COM

What has been your biggest accomplishment? I’ve been very lucky and had different accomplishments, each one is now the core of my business and the drive for the company. Part of my philosophy is to personally try and design something unique and different each time. This doesn’t come without its challenges and can make my work life harder, but I always believe that only when we challenge ourselves, we are able to achieve our best results.

15 INSIGHT

What inspired you to become a designer? After being in London for more then six months, I grew to love the city and all of its energy manifesting from everywhere. I also started to enjoy living in a multicultural city, it was very different from the beautiful, but very resistant, Lake Como. It was only after a few years when I started to work in respectable stores that I started to experience the luxury of distinguished brands’ work. Ralph Lauren was probably one of the main reasons why I decided to go to university and study architecture. Working for them in their Bond Street store taught me the meaning of ‘luxury lifestyle living’. I always had a passion for architecture and design, so it was natural for me to decide to go back to university and graduate in what I had real passion for. All in all, it was probably a combination of life experience from living in London and working for Ralph Lauren that inspired my career and helped me to finally choose my life path. Where do you look to for inspiration for your designs? I have created interiors for listed, period properties, new buildings, spacious country mansions and bijou townhouses in the UK and abroad. My aesthetic is inspired by the glamour of Lake Como, cosmopolitan New York and daily life in London. Fashion-based industries, such as ours, change frequently making it imperative for us designers to keep ahead of the game in terms of new trends. For me, the best way to evolve and keep up with new trends is by taking inspiration from fashion, movies and whatever is happening around us. London is an ever-changing and cosmopolitan environment and feeds my creativity naturally. Travelling to a different city is always a good way to explore a new culture and see something new that can be used for a next design; my luggage is always packed with memorabilia from the places I visit and my mind registers the different trends that I consolidate into my work.

What has been your biggest project to date? Surrey Hills Country Mansion; a large Edwardian property rooted in the Arts and Crafts movement which I completed a few years ago. It was fully refurbished by extending the original building to add a new double-height formal room, an orangery, three extra bathrooms and a walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom, adding an extra 10,000ft2 to the property.

Would you say that you have a design style? Like my own home’s interior, I prefer a style that embodies comfort with eclectic luxury, achieved by accenting with interesting pieces, materials and striking designs. It’s important for me to combine everyday pieces with luxury items to create a welcoming, yet polished, home.

My signature style isn’t apparent within every project I undertake in the sense that I like to interpret my clients’ tastes rather than imposing my own to ensure a unique and characterful end result. What was the brief that you received for your Ascot Lodge project? This Grade II Listed building had a fascinating history; it was built in the 15th century and was used by King James I, son of Mary Queen of Scotts, as a hunting lodge in the Berkshire countryside. It was remodeled in the 18th century then further extended and altered in 1912 by renowned Architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, who created the south-east wing incorporating the famous ‘Lutyens Ballroom’. The extension had its own style identity with signature domes that were replicated in other areas of the house. Modern-day alterations to the interior and exterior were limited due to the fact it is a listed building and all the original fabric had to be maintained. This included fireplaces, floors, windows, doors, ceilings, cornicing, coving and all other architectural detailing. Listed buildings consent was obtained and the project was subject to a rigorous checking process. We worked on the refurbishment of the interior of some of the key rooms

in the house; the Georgian room, ballroom, master bedroom and two guest bedrooms. The brief was to draw on elements of Ralph Lauren styling, but also incorporate antiques, artworks and personal heirlooms belonging to the family. This unique property required sensitive, thoughtful treatment bringing it up-to-date whilst retaining character and charm. Each room has a signature style inspired by a piece of artwork or connected to the history of the room itself – as in the case of the Georgian room, which was transformed into a private gallery

elements of Ralph Lauren styling, but also incorporate antiques, artworks and personal heirlooms

What was the brief that you received for Epicurean Pied-a-Terre? This deluxe, two-bedroom pieda-terre, with three bathrooms, is situated in the exclusive Ebury Square development. It was originally bought off-plan in Singapore by the client – a business professional, from property developer Berkeley’s group. To distinguish the interior from a typical showhome appearance that had been implemented, the brief was to strip away the ostentatious scheme and create a more sophisticated, but masculine, look for an overall look that encapsulates subtle luxury. It’s now a very modern apartment that features architectural pieces. I also used an abundance of elegant, luxurious materials throughout, from linen and fine leather fabrics from Ralph Lauren to Italian marble and stainless steel finishes. I wanted to create an interior scheme that had a slick appeal without it becoming overtly opulent, so I chose grey and black matt marble surfaces and removed the Herringbone flooring, replacing it with large,

the room. The upholstery and soft furnishings complemented this palette with beautiful layers of linen and cotton. All rugs have been custommade in grey, brown or green tones. What was the brief you received for the Chelsea Townhouse project? This townhouse in Chelsea was designed for a celebrity couple who wanted a calm and understated home. The client’s brief was to recreate the Ralph Lauren lifestyle as seen in the Mayfair collection. The couple were moving out of a contemporary flat, which was too cold and impersonal for their tastes and wanted a more mature look in their first marital home. The brief was to create something classic and stylish modelled on the Ralph Lauren look that was also glamorous and feminine. The client requested a fast turn-around and minimum disruption. I opted for dark wood furniture, a soft colour scheme and luxury finishes such as cashmeres and silks. I also created many bespoke pieces of furniture for the house, including the headboard in the master bedroom and the desk in the bay window that complements the iconic Ralph Lauren Duke Bar. Oneoff pieces were paired with antiques, among them the 1960s chandelier in the living room. With accessorising kept to a minimum in the garden, hallway and bathrooms, the overall effect is one of uncluttered luxury.

long floorboards to create a more contemporary feel. The flooring transcends throughout the open-plan living areas and the two bedrooms, using the same marble finish as the rest of the apartment for a beautifully streamlined look, complemented by natural, organic fabrics. Most of the pendant lighting was removed too, leaving only a feature/ sculptural pendant light from the Italian company Terzani above the dining table, as well as the wall panelling and wallpaper. The result was a very organic, neutral colour scheme, combined with a touch of red for continuity throughout, successfully INEX-ONLINE.COM

integrated with beautiful signature artwork and gold finishes. This was to achieve a natural continuity of space from room to room. We chose all of the final dressings to create a luxurious, clutter-free apartment. The heavy curtains and sheers from the original scheme were removed and instead we chose to use shutters to dress the windows to create a fresh, open look that made the best use of the light. The main feature in the living area is the striking original piece of art that I found on a trip to New York by Farin Urlaud (Torii – Fushimi Inari 2009) that creates a real ‘wow factor’ as soon as you enter

What can we expect to see from Maurizio Pellizzoni Interior Architecture & Design in 2017? We are currently working on several projects in London; each one of them is exciting, unique and different from each other. I am also working on an exciting project in my hometown in Italy at the moment. For 2017, I am planning to start some more projects in the USA – New York is one of my goals! I will also be expanding more into the commercial sector, adding more pieces to my online boutique and will be launching my own limited edition candle, amongst some other exciting collaborations. mauriziopellizzoni.co.uk «

Lighting up Southbank Place Southbank Place is London’s newest exciting riverside development by the Canary Wharf Group and real estate investment company, Qatari Diar. Scheduled for completion in 2019, it combines architectural excellence with an iconic setting to create some of the most sophisticated homes on offer in central London. The mixed-use development is situated opposite the London Eye, with exceptional views across the River Thames towards Whitehall.

esignPlusLight (DPL) has worked in conjunction with interior design firm, Goddard Littlefair, to light the rooms of Southbank Place’s Grade II* Listed marketing suite in the County Hall building, adjacent to Westminster Bridge, in the former private offices of the GLC and the headquarters for The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. The marketing suite offers unparalleled views of the Houses of Parliament and Whitehall. Steeped in British history, DesignPlusLight was briefed by Goddard Littlefair to design a bespoke architectural lighting scheme with the level of luxury and finesse that would instantly communicate the quality of the finishes in the final development. Goddard Littlefair specially designed the decorative chandeliers for this project, with specialist advice from DPL on ensuring that the firm used the latest in energy-efficient lighting. DesignPlusLight created a high-end, luxury lighting scheme to enhance the journey and seamlessly connect the entrance reception through to the meeting rooms, display pods and finally into the sample suites. features were added that would seamlessly integrate with the historic fabric of the building. “Our whole design ethos is to create layers of light that collectively enhance the perception of space and communicate an instant feel of exclusivity. Good architectural lighting should always complement, but never take precedence over, the interior design. We were extremely mindful of the heritage elements of the building from the outset, and this proved to be one of the most challenging aspects of the project. By working closely with the site engineers and design team, we were able to find creative solutions to illuminate each space,” comments Sanjit Bahra, Founder of DesignPlusLight.

DesignPlusLight stressed the importance of using an architectural lighting control system on the entire project so that all the lighting elements could be carefully balanced to create mood settings. Given the nature of the building, installing mood lighting was a challenge as not all cable routes in such an old building were known. DesignPlusLight proposed a wireless control system by Rako Lighting that enabled the existing wiring to be utilised and expanded upon to create multiple circuits within each room. DesignPlusLight worked closely with Goddard Littlefair to integrate lighting into the joinery pieces to bring layers of light into each space. Careful attention was made to keep each element unique to enhance the journey through the marketing suite. As artwork was a passion for the client, the joinery elements created the perfect lighting display opportunity.

A new reception desk was designed with vertical lines of LED light carefully detailed within the metal folds, offering a glimpse of the structure within. Discrete surface spotlights, concealed within the ceiling coffers, provide a focus onto the stone fireplace and clock. The window treatments of sheers and curtains were highlighted with a halo of light emanating from the head of the pelmet, softly lighting the display plinths below. and commissioned by Goddard Littlefair, is hung in the stairwell to emphatically draw the visitor up towards the first floor. 16 interlinking rings of light, supported from five storeys above, cascade down the central stairwell, sparkling and shimmering as you ascend. The existing fluorescent landing bulkheads were covered with parchment shades to soften their appearance and to provide a warm, domestic-like light. DesignPlusLight created a sense of arrival on the first floor landing by up-lighting the arch reveal above the door header and by illuminating specialist eglomise panels either side. These reflected the light from the chandelier to provide further sparkle.

Visitors are taken into the reception room where they are welcomed and shown brochures of the development. A stunning chandelier anchors the visual attention to the centre, whilst custom-designed cabinet pieces frame the four corners of the room. These have a multipurpose function, serving both as display pieces as well as housing the heating and A/C mechanics required for the space. DPL worked closely with the interior designer to integrate a flush line of light to frame each cabinet. Individual display recesses were lit with under-shelf lights and LED uplights were concealed in the top of the cabinets to provide reflected light into the space. Subsequently, only a few surface spots were required to light key artwork pieces. “The central chandelier should never provide more than a decorative glow, so it’s particularly important, especially in listed buildings, to consider how to bring light into the space, explains Sanjit. A boardroom features a stunning, custom-created black raindrop chandelier by Tom Dixon. The stunning light hangs down from the ceiling with the perfect balance in tandem with the bespoke joinery pieces. The showroom features two closing rooms to represent the height of luxury and finesse within the project. Both rooms feature refurbished timber panelling and custom joinery pieces that have a multifunctional capacity. Both feature custom-designed chandeliers with surface spotlights carefully concealed adjacent to the chandelier rose to light the fireplace and artwork. Smaller cabinets were designed as drinks cabinets, beautifully lit with concealed LED strip lights, providing a warm, reflected light into the space.

The second closing room, once serving as the office of Ken Livingstone in the heyday of the GLC, is the grandest room in the suite and serves as a representation of the later phase of the development. The high bay window offers a magnificent aspect of Big Ben and is perfectly framed with curtains, softly lit with LED strip lights concealed behind the pelmet. Plug-in uplights illuminate the fireplace surround whilst the occasional surface spotlight lights key artwork pieces. An integrated corridor links the U-shaped, 1207m2 suite rooms. The original timber panelling within the corridor was removed and meticulously restored, giving DPL the ideal opportunity to bring cables up the walls without damaging the fabric of the building. LED strip lights were concealed to the top of the pilasters so as to uplight the vaulted arches and create a sense of rhythm along each corridor. At each junction, mini LED spotlights were concealed behind specially made plaster mouldings to highlight the cross vaults and punctuate the end of each corridor.

The existing fluorescent pendants that were once the sole form of lighting within the space were replaced with decorative glass and parchment lanterns. These could not be dimmed, as they were emergency lights to the space, so DPL recommended low-energy LED candle lamps that enhance the room with a soft glow. A series of exhibition rooms overlook the Thames, where potential buyers can view the individual elements of the development with scale models and information panels. The lighting approach was kept consistent to ensure a sense of continuity across the exhibition space. designpluslight.com ÂŤ INEX-ONLINE.COM

Child’s play

Plankbridge Hutmakers has been building and restoring shepherd’s huts since 2000 when Owners, Richard Lee and Jane Dennison, discovered an early shepherd’s hut near Thomas Hardy’s cottage in Dorset. The pair were instantly inspired to bring an old ‘Wessex’ tradition back to life with the help of Richard’s training from John Makepeace’s Hooke Park College.

I

t was soon evident to Richard and Jane that these Victorian huts were ideal for providing useful, contemporary spaces for offices and everything from spare bedrooms to artists’ studios. To date, Plankbridge’s shepherd’s huts have been created for Hampton Court Palace’s gardens, The Pig Hotel Group, Daylesford Farm Shop, Humble by Nature and National Trust properties. What’s more, Plankbridge won a silver medal at RHS’ Chelsea Flower Show 2012 for an ‘Artisan Garden’. In July 2014, Plankbridge delivered a traditionally-crafted shepherd’s hut to The Royal Gardens at Highgrove to mark His Royal Highness Prince George’s first birthday. Richard gifted the 12 x 6’6in shepherd’s hut for Prince George to play in when he visits Highgrove as a mark of appreciation to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for the funding, opportunities and advice offered to him when he enrolled in the Prince’s Youth Business Trust in 1994. Plankbridge’s most recent project was for Anne Jennings from Viridian, who was tasked with creating a romantic, magical space with the character of an old, rediscovered garden. Within the garden design, Anne had to include a suitable playhouse for the client’s children, which needed to be in keeping with the style of a once-forgotten family INEX-ONLINE.COM

haven, but with contemporary twists to make it fit for modern-day use. With a 600mm alley to access the garden, there was not enough space to deliver the finished hut, so Plankbridge built a reduced size hut on site, which helped it blossom and grow into the fabric of its magical surroundings. All Plankbridge’s huts and living vans are inspired by the heritage and tradition of rural craftsmanship, with all the company’s shepherd’s huts built to the same 12 x 6’6in Victorian footprint, which would have been the norm during Thomas Hardy’s life. Due to the limited space within Anne’s garden project, there was not enough room to fit a traditional-sized shepherd’s hut, so Richard and Jane used a smaller footprint of 8 x 6’6in, which still allowed enough space for the children to enjoy the hut.

The design of the playhouse was completed at Richard and Jane’s workshop in Dorset, as was the preparation and weathering of the panels. All the completed components were delivered to the garden and the build took place on site. Plankbridge worked closely with Anne every step of the way to ensure that the hut’s presence helped achieve the desired effect within the garden, from the colour schemes to the level of distressed paintwork on the exterior of the hut. The hut is set on a strong metal chassis with cast iron wheels set on the outside of the hut, which is typical of the traditional Victorian design. Because the hut needed to be delivered in panels, Plankbridge clad the exterior in timber, as opposed to the usual corrugated iron. While, interior design firm, Sera of London, brought in suitable interior items of furniture and soft furnishings. The playhouse’s exterior needed to look as though it had been in this once-forgotten garden for a long time, so as well as draping it in ivy, wildflowers and covering the roof in moss to look as though it had grown into the garden, the timber cladding

was distressed by painting the panels with three different colours. Each layer of paint was applied and dry brushed before being rubbed back. The hut’s window frames are made from oak, and in this case both the windows and doors were painted to be in keeping with the distressed, weathered look. Meanwhile, the curved roof has been produced from corrugated iron, which is the traditional Victorian style of roof. Viridian then added a layer of moss to the roof, contributing to the maturity of the garden and the sense of a lost haven being rediscovered. Commenting on the finished project, Richard says: “Jane and I first began by discovering and recreating a Victorian shepherd’s hut, so it is always interesting to come at a project from the reverse angle and create something that

looks weathered by many years from entirely new materials. The hut in Chelsea is so at home within the beautiful outdoor escape designed by Anne and, for us, the playroom is a perfect visual representation of the once-forgotten shepherd’s hut now coming alive in the modern world, in so many different ways.” Plankbridge has recently launched its first ‘ready to go’ model called the Simply Classic shepherd’s hut. It is a distillation of 16 years’ experience and knowledge of what people need and want from their outdoor hideaways and offers a more affordable option for those wishing to extend the use of their garden throughout the year. In 2017, the company will also be returning to RHS Chelsea Flower Show and will be developing two new larger designs. plankbridge.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Pure beauty Portuguese art and design brand, Bessa, recovers techniques of craft production into unique, exclusive and luxurious home decor pieces. Bringing back the charm of ancient times through a new interpretation, Bessa’s latest design – the Uk Sofa – is a modern interpretation of a classic era.

A

unique vision of the past, creating a ‘newold’ aesthetic, Bessa’s exclusive work recreates feelings and stories of other times that seek to build a perfect past – a past full of exciting memories and inspiring feelings of nostalgia. Bessa’s mission is to bring into our lives a new concept of decor and interior uses by designing unique and exclusive pieces. Head Designer for Bessa, João Bessa, seeks the origins in all aspects of his daily life for inspiration for Bessa’s exclusive designs. João explains: “Being passionate about the history of design, I am inspired by vintage and classic movements and recreate the best of the past in my own way.” Combining his very own style with art and design, João creates luxurious furniture pieces of pure beauty. Bessa’s latest design, the Uk Sofa, was inspired by the famous chesterfield sofa. The result is how João mixes his own design with antique styles. The sofa, despite having an old style, breathes modernity – a perfect modern interpretation of a classic era. The originality of the Uk Sofa is in the innovative details while remaining familiar to the original classic design.

However, unlike the original chesterfield sofa, the Uk Sofa appears to be levitating. This refreshing aesthetic comes from the exquisite brass tube foot João implemented in its design. Whilst, the velvet upholstery adds a touch of elegance by accentuating the bright color with reflections. “When I look at this velvet, I see pure luxury and comfort. It has an amazing effect with the light,” explains João. He continues: “Velvet is great to instantly add a luxurious vibe to all interiors with deep tones and rich textures. “Velvet is looking to be on-trend, so there are even more reasons to implement it into homes. Incredible velvet interiors are indicators of good taste, richness and sophistication.” Opting for a vibrant, rich and luxurious colour, João also believes strong colours are on-trend, as João

explains: “People want colour in their lives. With industrialisation, greys and blacks tend to take possession of our homes and people just don’t want that anymore. The colour is ‘joy’ and people want ‘joy’. The homes of 1920s and 30s were much more cheerful – people want that back again.” Perched on the arm of the Uk Sofa hangs a gold, handmade tassel, adding a touch of luxury. “This was incorporated to bring passionate memories,” explains João. “These furniture details were common during the Victorian and Baroque eras. Our pieces tell a story and have a soul that holds the essence of the past. These details, such as the gold tassel detailing, facilitate the recreation of feelings and stories.” Gold is a sophisticated tone and offers a sophisticated style. “This does not have to be black and gold as most people think,” explains João. “It is easier and safer to work

with blacks with golds, but if we know how to merge a good colour contrast with a gold, we can perform miracles. In the case of the Uk Sofa this combination of tones work in perfect harmony.” All Bessa’s creations are designed to fulfil the requirements of exclusive clients who demand the best for their lives. The company’s target is the luxury market, allowing consumers to live unique experiences. “The world tends to trivialise itself so the market looks for unique and exclusive products,” says João. “Pieces that make the difference in our lives, pieces that thrill us and bring us sensations that industrialisation will never bring.” For 2017, Bessa is working on some exclusive art and design pieces and limited editions that will bring elegant stories and passionate memories from the past to 2017’s interiors. bessadesign.com «

Garnished in graffiti Keane Brands is delighted to announce that it is working on more of the extremely popular Bar & Beyond rebrands for Deltic Leisure Group. The third Bar & Beyond has recently opened its doors in Sheffield and there are plans to open further bars across the UK. Here Aidan Keane, Owner of Keane Brands, takes Inex on a tour of Bar & Beyond’s recently-refurbished Sheffield bar. INEX-ONLINE.COM

T

he first of a new concept for the UK late-night bar market, Bar and Beyond’s ethos offers a split level experience with food served at the bar from early evening and then, after dark ‘going beyond’, is a high-quality club experience with state-of-the-art sound systems and some of the best DJs and live acts around. The design of Bar & Beyond represents a new direction for Deltic Leisure Group. Aidan Keane, Owner of Keane Brands, describes the overall look as “an anarchic house party – part garage, part gallery space”. Obsessed with ‘going out’ since he was very young, and the youngest of eight children, Aidan’s two sisters’ habits of ‘going out’

33 BAR / NIGHTCLUB

clearly left a mark on him and he decided to open up Keane Brands, an interior design consultancy focusing on innovative and quirky designs for the hospitality industry. As a former DJ and club promoter, Aidan isn’t your regular-route designer. His design work lives across five continents for clients as diverse as Virgin, Emirates, Intercontinental Hotels, Jack Daniels, Nandos, Costa and Pret.

Talking about Bar & Beyond’s project, Aidan commented: “Bar & Beyond is an odd animal. It has the edgy design details of the coolest, hip bars, but with an easy-going informality of an old pub. It’s a great mix; Bar & Beyond’s customers get to feel they’re in a cool place which treats them in a very laid-back, easy way.” Deltic Leisure Group approached Aidan to reinvent some tired town centre bars, as he explains: “We were approached by Deltic Leisure to reinvent a part of their estate that was, to put it bluntly, awful – out of date; miserable; uninvested and rancid. “Deltic gave us carte blanche to change and reinvent the space and that’s precisely what we have done. Bar & Beyond genuinely has the perfect mix; design credibility and a local approachability, it doesn’t feel as if it’s owned by a big PLC; it feels personal.”

Above: Aidan and his team utilised what the existing site had to offer Above right: Downstairs, pendants hang over the bar with a red sulphur finish, aged with character Right: Bar & Beyond’s Sheffield scheme takes a nod to warehouse parties

Going ‘beyond’ The design ethic was simple for Aidan and his team – they utilised whatever the site had to offer and then took it ‘beyond’. Aidan explains further: “We try and use whatever we can from the bar’s previous life and if that includes some timber, then great. If it doesn’t, we’ll use a range of other flooring options – including concrete, tile or reclaimed wood. “It’s this reason that each Bar & Beyond scheme feels different,” explains Aidan. “That said, there are a few common design touches that are shared across all of Bar & Beyond’s schemes, such as our red hanging horse.”

INEX-ONLINE.COM

The red hanging horse, featured in the entrance of Bar & Beyond’s Sheffield establishment, came about after a discussion Aidan and his team had in the studio about a feature that would create big visual interest – an instant ‘instagrammable’ icon. “One person suggested we drop in a life-size horse – just to keep it random! The next person said we should have it painted in a ‘mad colour’, to stop it looking like a horse and ‘top it off’, and another person said we should hang it upside down – it all made perfect sense! “We wanted to create a space that had a sort of ‘post-apocalyptic edge’, that looked like the crowd

had broken in and started a party – a nod to warehouse parties.” Bar & Beyond’s ground floor bar servery construction was existing and Aidan and his team kept the structure and worked with it, cladding the front with rusty panels, adding uplit steel rebars to the back and graffiti to the bulkhead, giving it more character and texture. The entrance area of the bar also includes a light-changing concept to create an enticing warmth on the bar’s first impression. Exposed, hanging LED bulbs feature within the bar-front window, offering a venue of warm ambience to passers-by.

35 BAR / NIGHTCLUB

Downstairs, pendants hang over the bar with a red sulphur finish, aged with character. While most other walls are subtly highlighted with surface-mounted spotlights. The back bars have counter-illuminated stepped displays to show off the wide range of products on offer, the coolers below are standard for the dispense of bottled beers and the like. Uplit rebars have graffiti champagne bottles mounted on them. Meanwhile, on the first floor, the headlight framework on the graffiti wall adds a focus, offering the impression as if the bits have been collected and pieced together in an ‘unmanufactured’ way. The nature of the design of Bar & Beyond has also meant that the interiors team were able to get creative in terms of ‘upcycling’ and ‘recycling’. Old plaster boards and cable reels have become a design feature and reusing as many old materials as possible has now become a stable of future design plans. Some furnishings are reused and upcycled, such as the cinema seats for example, others are picked to complement the overall scheme and design direction. All furnishings have come from a range of suppliers, but all are different and all picked to add a quirk or fascination. Raw, mild steel combines with rusted panels, brick, concrete and unfinished timbers, accompanied by paintdripping walls and graffiti messaging subtly referencing Author, John Steinbeck. Giving spaces energy Graffiti features heavily throughout Bar & Beyond’s Sheffield establishment. “Graffiti adds edge and ‘visual candy’ to an enclosed space,” enthuses Aidan. “It gives that space huge energy and it was one of the first design elements we put into the mix. Glen Anderson, the Graffiti Artist, is a real talent that we have known for years. He used to come to our studio on his skateboard to do his work.” A skull graffiti ‘wall tattoo’ features on Bar and Beyond’s feature wall which was developed as a symbol of ‘rebellion’; a unifying image that brings all Bar & Beyonds together. Aidan’s refurbished design for Bar & Beyond’s Sheffield home has resulted in an honest, urban, unmanufactured interior. “Bar & Beyond is purposely designed to give a mainstream customer some edge and coolness. Enough quirks and humour to relax everyone and enough designer features to flood the social networks with images. Bar & Beyond has attitude and a ‘swagger.’ It’s not tied down by corporates and genuinely feels more independent every time one opens.” Bar & Beyond was originally designed as a bar venue for 20-25-year-olds and that, to a degree, is its core market. “What is great to see is how this appeal has broadened now, with Bar & Beyond establishments across the UK attracting huge groups of females of all ages, all loving that perfect mix of style and approachability. Bar & Beyond is a hugely popular bar and club space. Wherever we drop one, the locals seem to love it,” concluded Aidan. keanebrands.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Enjoying the view When undertaking a modern extension for their traditional Victorian property in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, a client turned to Express to create their very own light-filled dream to enjoy views of their immaculate garden in.

T

he homeowner had created an expansive sunroom on the rear of their Victorian property and had a very specific specification for what window and door products they had in mind and how they would use them. “The homeowner opted for a five-panel bi-folding door which could also be used as an everyday access door, allowing them to utilise their existing space better,” explains Founder of Express, Steve Bromberg. Express’ client was looking for contemporary products that would create a bold feature and contrast the rest of the house. The number one priority for the client was maximising natural light while the doors were closed. Steve explains: “The client’s sunroom looked out onto an immaculate garden that they wanted to enjoy throughout the seasons, therefore they wanted to open their sunroom up to their immaculate views. Top: The number one priority for the client was maximising natural light while the doors were closed Above: Express’ client was looking for contemporary products that would create a bold feature

“We created a space that can be enjoyed all year round and the natural light that enters the property has been fully maximised through clever bespoke touches, such as the glass hipped roof, spreading light throughout the ground floor.” Express installed the lean-to roof and produced it from the same profiles as the skyline roof lantern.

Its appearance is led by modern, architectural design and the profiles are 60% slimmer than other roofing products, minimising the frame and maximising the glass area – which means more light – without compromising on structural integrity. “In a nutshell, our client chose the slimmest and most visually-modern roof we offer,” enthuses Steve.

Top: Bi-folding doors allow homeowners to flood homes with light, making rooms appear larger Left: Express created a space that can be enjoyed all year round

Bi-folding doors allow homeowners to flood homes with light, making rooms appear larger and creating open living spaces that connect with the outdoors for yearround garden views. A folding door allows a homeowner to create a 90% clear opening which will completely transform a space that was previously lacking in natural light. Floor-to-ceiling glazed doors will bathe any room in natural light. The decision to use picture windows

and the skyline roof profile in this project has allowed use of minimal frame in the hipped roof area, making a huge impact in terms of maximising natural light. The homeowners had a big sandstone house and white windows on the original build to have that traditional appeal. The dark grey profiles Express installed emphasise the extension and that is immediately where your eyes are drawn to. This has helped to create a feature of the extension that complements the traditional build. Express’ products were finished in RAL 9005 black, in a metallic textured finish. This finish is harder to scratch, but also takes all glass out of the paint, giving it a more premium look and feel.

The complexity of the roof proved difficult for Express, as Steve explains: “We built a steel portal frame for the roof to sit on, designed so it could project a large span without using unattractive mounting bars. This wasn’t really an obstacle as we do it all the time, it just meant we had to return to the property with pressing for the portal frame as we measured the required pressings once everything else was installed. “The glass wall we have created looks great and won’t have that chill in winter because of the solar heat gain within the glazing. The space is now completely versatile with the bridged gap between indoors and the garden, allowing for free-flowing spaces during the warmer months,” concludes Steve. Express was started in 2007 by Steve Bromberg and his father, who spotted the emerging trend of bi-folding doors, and a gap in the market for quality, UK-manufactured products created quickly. Express is family-owned and managed, and manufactures all its products in the UK as well as offering an installation service. expressbifolds.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

40 NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Wondrous walls London-based Meystyle specialises in designing and manufacturing bespoke wallpaper with the added feature of integrated LEDs. The company started in 2004, when sisters Maria and Ekaterina Yaschuk worked together on the very first prototype of a wallcovering substrate with 99 light-emitting diodes.

M

aria and Ekaterina’s concept was successively developed into a series of designs exhibited in 2007 under the name ‘Wire Geometrics’ at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. The technology has been refined ever since and made into an easy-to-install product that is reinvented each year with new designs and features. Maria and Ekaterina have defined new possibilities for interior designers with the launch of Meystyle by bringing together two worlds that were traditionally separate – wall decoration and interior lighting.

Meystyle’s LED wallpaper is produced from a variety of different substrates, from vinyl with a luxury matt finish to natural silk fibres on non-woven backing. The company is constantly improving the choice of materials it can print on, as Ekaterina explains: “For example, for our latest collection – Conductivity – we have introduced a range of natural linens and linen canvases that bring a whole new touch of sophistication to our designs.” Every single roll of wallpaper Maria and Ekaterina design is produced in the company’s London-based studio.

“We print digitally using the latest digital printing technologies and use the most eco-friendly inks available on the market,” comments Maria. “The LEDs are fitted by hand, one by one, as are all other finishes we offer – such as gilding, hand-painting and the addition of Swarovski crystals. “We normally work with cotton, silk and a variety of upholstery velvets. But, we are happy to consider new materials when a project requires it. For example, recently we have been working with leather for the interior of a luxury private airplane.” Inspiration Meystyle’s inspiration came to Maria during her master’s degree in Textile Futures at Central Saint Martins. She was unsure whether to focus on a wallcovering or an interior lighting project and decided to combine the two, resulting in her idea of LED wallpaper.

41 NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Maria and Ekaterina’s design inspirations are diverse, as Ekaterina explains: “Nature in all its unpredictable forms is probably our main visual reference, but we often integrate it with literary, historic and artistic influences. The writings of Aleister Crowley are behind the mesmerising patterns of the Abyss collection, whereas the Nina collection takes much of its signature shapes and colours from old embroideries made by our grandmother, and the designs in the Poems collection reflect on Japanese haiku poetry. “On a more general level, we like to break the bidimensional surface of the walls by creating the illusion of dimension and we like to play with the synthesis of opposites, such as randomness/order and repetition/variation.” Meystyle currently has 10 collections for a total of more than 200 designs. “Each year we come up with a different concept and rework it up until few days before the deadline for the official launch,” enthuses Maria. “Sometimes a collection starts with a well-defined series of shapes and colours to work with and finishes with an entirely new set of designs that we could not have predicted in the beginning.” Technology Maria and Ekaterina have researched into the company’s technology for many years and developed a special technique that gives them the possibility to create any light pattern they wish, while maintaining the substrate completely flat and flexible, enabling it can be hung like regular wallpaper. The LEDs Maria and Ekaterina use are very small and some designs also include micro LEDs, which are practically invisible when switched off.

The LED wallpaper is supplied with a wire that can be fixed at the top or bottom edge of the roll without adding any thickness to it. The wire can then be connected to an electrical socket or a light switch using the power supply or LED drive that is provided – one power source is enough to light up an entire wall. Maria and Ekaterina have developed a specific technology to seamlessly connect each roll of LED wallpaper reducing the wiring to a minimum. Collections “Our first official collection was Fragmented,” explains Maria. “The designs consist of layers of stylised plants and flowers combined with soft stripes and bright colours. From the very start, we wanted to make a bold statement by bringing walls unabashedly to the foreground. INEX-ONLINE.COM

“One of our latest collections, The Lattice Systems collection, came from our fascination with modernist architecture and natural geometric structures. We started by exploring the possibilities offered by hexagonal shapes and then developed more complex shapes and patterns using repetition and randomisation.” An example of one of Meystyle’s recent projects is a residential villa in Astana, Kazakhstan, as Maria explains: “We were asked to create a feature display to complement the minimal style of the decor, consisting of clean lines and neutral colours. We proposed the Nordic Waterfall from our Lattice Systems collection, as we felt that its combination of organic and architectural shapes would offer a perfect counterpoint to the style of the furniture while adding visual excitement to the room. “The Nordic Waterfall is one of our most majestic standalone pieces. Its strength originates from the unpredictable synthesis of rational human thinking with the sublime force of nature.

“In another project – our King’s Road project – we were contacted by Juliettes Interiors to create something special for their Chelsea showroom. To complement the opulence and sophistication of their environment, we produced a new colourway of our Night Qualia design from the Abyss collection. We also completed the Magick Gateway design for a separate room with a softer colour palette. Both designs feature Swarovski crystals and LEDs for extra ‘oomph’.” Across the pond in Paris, a designer working on a ‘Trocadero project’ contacted Meystyle after visiting the company’s stand at Maison & Objet.

“She was working on a big dining room with dark wooden panels running on all four walls and making the space feel a bit oppressive,” says Ekaterina. “We agreed to use the Paris Dawn design to produce a series of custom-size prints that would fit inside the given wooden frames. “The light colours of this design really helped to lighten up the walls and make the whole space feel brighter and livelier. The style of the ornaments on our wallpaper perfectly match the furniture and add a contemporary vibe to the traditional setting.” meystyle.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

This allows the company to ensure strict quality control at all stages of production, utilising local traditional skills and the most innovative technology to ensure its leather meets the most demanding of requirements. The hallmark of Crest Leather is the exceptionally INEX-ONLINE.COM

As a natural product, leather will often display traces of its past, such as brand marks, scars, growth lines, veins and areas of differing fibre density. These hallmarks in no way detract from its natural beauty. Each hide will vary in size and shape, but on average they will be approximately 55ft2. Hides are priced by the square foot.

45 YEAR AT A GLANCE

Quality and bespoke luxury Crest Leather is a multi-national producer of highquality finished leather. Through its various operations across four continents, it uses a combination of the latest technology and traditional artisanal techniques to ensure its range of leathers meet even the most demanding of requirements.

C

rest Leather currently owns and operates tanneries in Brazil, Italy and Thailand – alongside further operations in London, Manchester and the USA – with a total workforce of well-over over 800 personnel. Every year, Crest Leather processes over 1,000,000 hides, sells over 58,000,000ft2 of finished leather and moves thousands of containers across six continents – and the company is still growing. Maintaining quality is of utmost importance to the company, which is why its leather is tanned in an ISO 9001 environment. However, Crest Leather is very conscious of the fact that quality leather products are only part of what it provides, so it also works hard to make sure that it gives the highest levels of customer service to its clients. Crest Leather’s facility in Manchester – CrestJMT – offers a wide range of finished leather in stock, for order to predominantly UK customers. Currently it holds over three million square foot in stock at its warehouse in Rochdale, in some 311 different colours across 22 different types of leather. Crest JMT has recently expanded its range with 62 brand-new colours using high-quality European pigmented leathers produced at its tannery in Arzignano, Veneto. Along with Crest Leather’s existing range, it also offers a bespoke option to customers who wish to request made-to-order finished leather.

Sometimes only the exact colour will do If you cannot find an exact match with any of Crest JMT Leather’s standard colours and only that particular colour will do, then you can take advantage of its bespoke colour service. Specifiers are welcome to send Crest JMT Leather either a Pantone reference, indicating the particular colour required, or a reasonably-sized sample of whatever indicates the colour required. To make a hide in a bespoke colour normally takes around four to five weeks from receipt of the order and a minimum order quantity is one hide (average size 5m2). For more information on Crest JMT Leather’s bespoke colour service, please contact Crest JMT Leather’s sales office to discuss any requirements further.

Crest JMT Leather enhances customer experience With the launch of Crest JMT Leather’s new website – which has greater interactivity and information on new and existing product ranges – the company is able to offer a better service and a concise way to bring together many leading retailers, tanners and brands from around the world to promote sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry. Maintaining quality is very important to Crest JMT Leather, and that’s why it tans its leathers in an ISO 9001 environment. However, the company is very conscious of the fact that quality products are only a part of what it provides – the leather specialist works hard to make sure that it gives the highest levels of customer service. History in the heart of Whitehall protected with the help of Selectaglaze As planning got underway for restoring Banqueting House, security was highlighted as a key concern, along with reducing noise ingress from outside.

T

he current Banqueting House, Whitehall, was designed by Inigo Jones in 1619-22 after its predecessor was destroyed by fire. Its principal use was to stage state events, provide private drinking space for James I and in 1636 to display the great ceiling paintings of James I, by Sir Peter Paul Rubens. Royal Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze, was approached to provide a bespoke solution that not only offered protection to the large windows, but was an unobtrusive window treatment. The proposed design replaced the blast net curtains and allows daylight once again to flood into the main hall, and provides a significant level of noise insulation to ensure visitors peace and tranquillity when viewing the Rubens. Selectaglaze knew it had products certified to the requirement, but they had never been specified to these sizes. The main hall window openings were 3.6m high and 2.0m wide. Two years ago, testing was carried out for what

turned out to be the largest ever single casement to be blast tested in the UK. The results were a success and planning for the installation began. Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side of a building and is a completely independent and fully reversible adaptation, widely accepted by most heritage bodies. Selectaglaze is a specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing. With 50 years’ experience, it has worked on all building types. selectaglaze.co.uk « 01727 837271 « enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk «
