very interior scheme will be adorned with one or several iconic pieces of furniture. Be they functional or purely aesthetic, timeless furnishings offer a formulaic approach to interior decoration and have evolved significantly over the decades. In this month’s issue, Inex addresses the coffee table – a classic and practical piece for both residential and commercial environments. The coffee table has benefited from some major adaptations since the increase in demand for coffee tables in the 1750s where tea drinking was at the height of fashion. Manufactured from wood, glass or even more natural materials such as wicker or rattan, the coffee table sees numerous styles to suit a variety of individual tastes. Stelios Mousarris’ Wave City coffee table exemplifies just how far the design of the coffee table has come from the 17th century to today. Using 3D printing, Stelios’ design is likened to a structural piece of art. Find out more on page 24. Elsewhere in this issue, Inex speaks to joint CEO of the boutique hotel group, Alexander Hotels. Here she explains her interior design choices for the scheme at the acclaimed hotel, Alexander House. Turn to page 26 to learn more. I hope you enjoy this issue. Gleaming with elegance Italian-born Daniele Petteno graduated from the University of Venice in 2002. During his studies he was featured within several publications and exhibitions. In 2009 he opened his design practice DPAW which has received much international acclaim.

W

ith a relevant background and a broad experience, Daniele Petteno’s Architecture Workshop follows and develops a wide range of architecture and interior design projects. His works have received international recognitions and have been featured in countless publications worldwide. Daniele’s belief that ‘less is more’ and his view on “injecting an element of the natural-external environment into internal spaces we live in daily” is exemplified exceptionally in his designs. Inex has interviewed Daniele exploring his creative mindset and design style. Here, Daniele explains his love for natural daylight within an interior design concept, and explains how he personally feels that it can contribute to a scheme – to really achieve a bright and spacious feel to a home.

Q. What inspired you to become an interior designer? We spend most of our lives in built environments, which are – in most cases – poorly designed. It is the wish to help people live in better places that gives me constant inspiration and focus. Interior design can also encourage people to live better lives. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Q. Who has been your greatest influence throughout your career? Personally I feel all architects and designers that have considered the internal composition of space as a primary factor of quality – regardless of their time, age or era have influenced me throughout my career. From the Roman Domus architects, to Michelangelo, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and

Q. What is your most regarded professional achievement? Being awarded and appreciated in various countries and contexts, which have totally different design approaches, tastes, habits and lifestyles has been a great achievement.

Q. What is your signature style? The absolute absence of cliches; each project has a unique design, which is tailored to satisfy the client’s needs, and contextualised to enhance each site’s peculiarities. Q. Do you have a favoured colour palette when it comes to design? Nothing is established upfront, I

look at each site with fresh eyes. Colours and materials are timeto-time selected in relation to the type of project; the location, the concept and the amount of natural light. Q. There is quite an obvious focal point towards the television, alongside another focal point which drives your attention through the living spaces, to the rear garden. Q. Q. How do you feel that light contributes to the design of an interior? Most of our projects are conceived to maximise the natural daylight and minimise the use of artificial lighting. This becomes an absolute primary factor, especially in a new build where there is more flexibility and freedom in coordinating glazing and openings. Q. Can you describe the initial thought process for your project

an Entrance Hall for Two Art Lovers? The overall concept here was to create an elegant entrance hall, through a clean perspective, with a hidden source of natural light coming in from the windows of the first floor. The subject here is the artwork on the main wall, and not the interior architecture generated, therefore colours, materials and shapes drive visitors’ attention to the artwork. Q. Can you explain your design process when you receive a brief. A good project is like a story. I initially spend time to think about a concept. If it is strong and the client likes it, the project will successfully drive-through

The Terraced House in Battersea is a typical Victorian terraced house of approximately 160m2 – which has been more than doubled in size. The client is a family with three children, whom require the ground floor to be a welcoming reception room at the front, and a large living room at the rear. The client requires typical functions, a living-dining kitchen in the basement – which they wanted as a spacious area with plenty of natural light. A sense of serenity Pantone – the global colour authority and provider of professional colour standards – has released a softer take on colour for 2016. For the first time the blending of two shades, Rose Quartz and Serenity, have been selected as the Pantone Colour of the Year.

P

antone’s Colour of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s colour experts, at the Pantone Colour Institute, combine the world looking for new colour influences. This can include inspiration from the entertainment industry, films in production, travelling, art collections and fashion as well as new lifestyles. Influences may also stem from INEX-ONLINE.COM

new technologies, materials, textures and effects – that impact colour. For 16 years, Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries – including fashion, home furnishings and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. Each year Pantone reveals its symbolic colour selection, described as a colour snapshot of what Pantone expect to take place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and attitude. This year’s Pantone Colour of The Year includes the use of two colours – Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.

Whereas Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times. The prevalent combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity challenges traditional perceptions of colour association. Together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes the engaging combination joins easily with other mid-tones including greens, purples, rich browns, and shades of yellow and pink. Consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern-day stresses and welcome colours that psychologically fulfil our yearning for reassurance and security.

17 INSPIRE

Whether on their own or combined with other shades, the pairing of Serenity and Rose Quartz inject a feeling of calm and relaxation into the home environment. Similar to a serene sunset Rose Quartz encourages reflection on your surroundings. While Serenity – a transcendent blue – provides a naturally connected sense of space. An ideal choice for rugs and upholstery, Serenity and Rose Quartz also work well in paint and for decorative accessories. Coupling solid and patterned fabrics, throws, pillows and bedding in these shades provide a comforting respite and feeling of wellbeing in the home. Incorporating texture can enhance the duality and kinship of these hues. Serenity and Rose Quartz coloured kitchen items and tableware – as well as home accessories such as candles, decorative bowls, vases and florals – add subtle colour accents while contributing to a welcoming and peaceful space. The colours selected as this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year were taken from the Pantone fashion and home interiors colour system – the most widely used and recognised colour standards system for the textile and home and interior design industry. In August, Pantone released 210 new colours to the system. Pantone 153919 Serenity and Pantone 13-1520 Rose Quartz are included in this collection of 210 new shades. pantone.com «

High in the trees Treehouses are nostalgically remembered as magical experiences from our childhood. The treehouse has been captured in many novels, from Robinson Crusoe to Pooh Bear. Blue Forest discusses how you can inject adventure and imagination into your client’s garden scheme with a luxury treehouse.

INEX-ONLINE.COM

19 EX-RATED Opposite page: Luxury treehouses can transform areas of the garden that are not used Left: A treehouse can provide many years of enjoyment for the family Below left: Incorporating functional interior features within your concept is a great way of turning your treehouse into a home Below: Play items can also be used as connecting play areas

M

any of us, who are lucky enough to have large gardens, will know that there are areas of the grounds that are not used as much as they should be. Luxury treehouses can offer a transformation of these areas – creating an accessible part of the garden that the whole family can enjoy. Treehouses have become a form of structure that embody the values of adventure, creativity, escapism and play. Some people feel that a treehouse should be a very natural space – free from technology and gadgets – whereas others imagine treehouses to be completely kitted out with the latest gadgets. i-pad systems, mood lighting, finger-print recognition doors, home cinema systems and console game rooms are great design features that can be integrated into a treehouse scheme. Treehouses can take quite some time to construct and visits from a treehouse developer to the proposed sites are necessary to help identify the best positioning within the garden – for benefits such as exposure, sunlight and shelter from the wind. Another factor to consider when contemplating a treehouse scheme is that planning permission would be required to build high-level treehouses.

Mature and sturdy trees are imperative to use as host trees, oak trees for example would be a perfect host tree as the outreaching branches create naturally perfect shapes and spaces to build around. If the garden does not contain any suitable host trees many treehouses can be built high-up on stilts, meaning they still have the desired tree-top feel without actually being built around a tree. The use of cedar shingles and tongue-and-groove are predominantly used for the exterior of many treehouses. For larger

scale projects kebony wood is an alternative that can be used as a timber finish – this is particularly durable for treehouse projects. Typical treehouses are built with (FSC or PEFC) softwood and timber wood – being one of the most sustainable building materials. With most treehouses being produced from timber, there are an enormous number of suitable finishes available. The majority of treehouses are supported on timber sub-frames, however steel frames and concrete elements can also be used. INEX-ONLINE.COM

20 EX-RATED

Left: The interior of a treehouse should be spacious and comfortable Below: Maintenance is particularly important when the tree passes through the floor and roof

It is advisable to select different materials for individual projects, dependant on the location and weather at the site – especially if you are planning to initiate a project outside of the UK. Different materials and design developments would have to be considered, particularly in harsh weather environments. If looked after well, a treehouse can provide many years of enjoyment for the whole family. It is recommended that topical treatments are applied to exposed timber regularly. Maintenance is particularly important when the tree passes through the floor and roof of the treehouse. Waterproof seals can be applied between the tree and the roofing to prevent leakage. It is important that structures are designed to move and adapt as host trees grow, as over time the host tree can change shape, and if a structure is not adjusted and maintained it may have a negative impact on the support points. It is advised to try to avoid impacting the tree when installing a treehouse. Treehouses are a very sustainable form of architecture and it is important to protect the trees wherever possible. Independent arborists can help to develop construction methods that will not harm the trees. INEX-ONLINE.COM

When considering a treehouse concept there are a few considerations to adhere by including: any planning issues that may arise including timescales, logistics, and the surrounding environment. Trap doors and swings and slides are great feature ideas for children’s treehouses. However it is important to include safe but adventurous features. Play items are not just limited to the treehouse, but could also be used as connecting play areas such as exits and entrances. Luxury finishes and intricate detailing make a real difference to the feel of an interior inside a treehouse. The interior should be spacious and comfortable,

with plenty of features to give it that wow factor. Incorporating functional interior features within your treehouse concept such as an Aga oven, a hot tub, log fires, escape pods and home cinemas are a great way of turning your treehouse into a home. Heating and air conditioning are also a great idea to incorporate into designs to achieve an ‘outside home’. blueforest.com «

A sip of structure The coffee table is a common furnishing found in many households. Stelios Mousarris has expressed his take on the coffee table with his Wave City adaptation – a structural piece of art with the use of 3D printing.

T

he coffee table has benefited from some major adaptations since the British increase in demand for coffee tables in 1750 where tea drinking was at the height of fashion. Stelios Mousarris’ Wave City coffee table exemplifies just how far the design of the coffee table has come, from the 17th century to today. Cypriot-based Designer Stelios Mousarris completed his degree in model making at Bournemouth University, soon after he went onto work for British architect, Fosters and Partners as a model maker and eventually moved on to undertake an assistant designer role at Duffy London. In 2014 he launched his own company, Mousarris, creating high quality pieces of furniture. INEX-ONLINE.COM

The inspiration for Stelios Mousarris’ Wave City coffee table came from tsunami waves on a documentary he was watching five months ago. He knew then that he wanted to create something that implemented the ocean with the use of buildings – combining something organic with something man-made. With Stelios’ personal aim to keep a viewer’s attention longer than 10 seconds, this structural piece of art exemplifies Stelios’ design style exceptionally, with an element of surprise. The Wave City coffee table is still in production, with Stelios developing his design daily. He is also currently in the process of designing a dining table version of the Wave City table. It is produced using old methods, combined with new methods with the use of steel wood and 3D print technology. Stelios describes his Wave City coffee table as a “sculpture”,

opposed to a coffee table, which is visible from the 60 3D printed buildings that are applied to the table. Each one of these buildings requires several hours of modelling, with the use of a custom-made 3D printer, each building is produced from a high quality wood filament. Stelios works alongside a local steel manufacturer, Nikolas Koumbarou, to produce the curve design of the table using steel and wood to achieve the curve design. It takes around two months to produce one table due to the detail that is involved in the design, particularly with the individual buildings that sit underneath the coffee table. The table is finished with wax to protect it from any spillages, and is accompanied by an acrylic case that protects the buildings from damage. mousarris.com «

House was launched in 2006. The original concept for the Utopia Spa was a Mediterranean basement swimming area with key architectural features. It was important to seamlessly blend the hotel to the spa. The couple were keen to have a pool with no windows. Peter and Deborah worked with a very natural colour palette to enhance the Grecian themed pillars and marble floors. Functional seasonal changes are undertaken to enhance guest’s experiences at Alexander House. Quilts are changed seasonal, with a higher-tog in the winter, and lowertog in the summer. The bedding in all Alexander Hotels is Egyptian cotton which gives a year-round usability.

When designing an interior scheme Deborah starts with a scheme and inspiration shortly follows. “Inspiration usually comes from a painting, photograph or the landscape, and from there the concept grows. My husband – like many out there, I’m sure – very often comments that I always find a taste for expensive items!” When designing an interior scheme for a luxury hotel Deborah advises: “Firstly, understand the market you are targeting – what are their requirements?

What do they enjoy? Take time to understand the uses of fabrics for the environment they are intended for, and be aware of the orientation of the sun on your property. “A luxury hotel is all about the way it makes a guest feel – on arrival, during their stay and when they depart. Interior design offers a strong base to assist with this, we focus hard on providing some home comforts to make an experience luxurious; from roaring log fires in the winter, to al fresco dining in the summer.” alexanderhotels.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

34 LIGHTING

The ultimate dining experience

New destination restaurant, Fumé, situated in Dubai, has benefited from a vintage, industrial inspired lighting concept from lighting and acoustics specialist Acoulite.

A

coulite is delighted to have worked on the lighting design of Fumé – the latest in the line of successful restaurants from the stable of the Jas Group. After a successful installation at Fumé’s sister restaurant – situated in the Dubai Marina – Acoulite was welcomed back to complete the same concept at Fumé’s branch in downtown Dubai. The concept and management of this new restaurant was the brain

child of Jas Group’s CEO, Elmar Pichorner. His vision was to celebrate traditional preparation methods that recollect childhood memories of comforting and home-style cooking. Acoulite is proud to have been involved with the design of the interior lighting, and development of the concept alongside Elmar Pichonorner. Together, they have created a distinctive and memorable experience for the diner.

Lighting design for hospitality projects is as demanding as lighting for a retail project. The various areas in Fumé’s diner have been designed to visually enhance interest or intrigue guests into the diner. The idea behind Acoulite’s lighting scheme was to create drama and sparkle and to enhance guests’ dining experience. Fascinating features Established with a vintage theme, the novel restaurant is lavish with interior features and quirky, period industrial elements. Evoking the influence of a bygone era, Fumé fascinates its guests with an energetic experience within comfortable surroundings. The array of custom-manufactured, feature pendants – including a stunning row of bottle lights – keeps guests stimulated, along with unique pieces of artwork in interesting materials. Fumé’s interior design is inspired by industrial, vintage influences along with purposely mismatched flatware, unique pieces of artwork and striking chandeliers – all produced from a variety of interesting materials. Acoulite’s lighting scheme had to have the industrial feel and look to complement the existing decor within the diner. Acoulite’s lighting design was driven by the decor, unique objects and furniture placed around the establishment. As the existing decor in Fumé’s establishment was built around industrial and rudimentary materials, Acoulite had to keep its design scheme to an industrial style. Acoulite manufactured customised light fixtures using similar materials found in the existing decor that would complement the scheme. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Acoulite found it challenging to source matching and complementing materials to build its customised light fixtures for this project. However, Acoulite succeeded with the use of recycled bottles which were converted into pendant lights around the bar area. The main lighting feature is the Spider Chandelier which was innovatively custom fabricated from IKEA table lamps – which contributed to the industrial look set out in the brief from Elmar Pichorner. The Spider Chandelier design was based on Elmer’s concept of a spider chandelier. IKEA table lamps assisted in keeping to the industrial decor, due to their structure and mobility. The lighting scheme throughout the establishment complements the location and atmosphere of downtown Dubai. Acoulite has enhanced the existing space with its bespoke, unique objects and intriguing furniture. The accent lighting contributes to bring out the natural colours of the cuisine, whilst track mounted and surface mounted track lights were used to highlight the tables, bar counters and bottle displays. acoulite.ae « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Charming Chelsea Number 22 Tite Street lies in the heart of Chelsea – one of the most opulent areas in London. nu:builds meticulously designed this four-storey townhouse to the highest specifications, renovating numerous rooms within the establishment.

S

pecialist, luxury architectural and interior design practice, nu-builds has renovated this late-Victorian, mid-terraced house which is Tite Street’s newest and most prestigious residential renovation. The client’s brief was to create a Knightsbridge quality design, whilst retaining the elegance and charm of traditional Chelsea. The client was design-led, requesting individuality to all rooms with bespoke joinery and a selection of finishes. With nu:builds’ project goal to meet the absolute highest expectations for the luxurious residence, meeting its client’s expectations proved difficult with Crema Marfil and Maron Imperial marble detailing throughout the ground and lower INEX-ONLINE.COM

basement level – but the team managed expectations. Crema Marfil and Maron Imperial was selected to retain the classic feel of a Chelsea townhouse. nu:builds created a classic border detail in Imperial marble to the entrance hallway, on the ground floor. Various marbles were selected for the master en-suite, powder rooms and guest en-suites – providing individuality to each space, as the client requested. The lower bathrooms were provided with a much darker, moodier feel; with the upper bathrooms becoming lighter to reflect the movement of natural light within the property. The main staircase was finished in Crema Marfil, accompanied with a bespoke bronze balustrade with a french polished handrail. The design is classic with a bullnose detail to the steps. The second staircase, from the ground floor leading to the basement, is of a contemporary style, with an open tread, finished in Crema Marfil, with a bespoke leather wrapped and stitched hand rail. The second staircase is positioned below a skylight, to allow floods of light to fill the basement area.

The reception room – which is positioned at the front of the property, with bay windows looking onto Tite Street – has been opened up into the hallway, to give an instant impact-onentry to the property, with bespoke glass doors in a dark veneer and bronze detailing. Creating a formal space for entertaining, nu:builds installed a centralised, classic marble fireplace, glass chandelier and silk wallpaper in the reception room. Handmade, silk chinoiserie wallpaper in a Stella Blue, from Fromental is featured in the dining room. The design of this luxurious wallpaper was bespoke to nu:builds’ client, the designers chose how the branches and flowers fell which enhanced the dining room space. A unique addition to the dining room is a fitted, highly detailed wine display, in a high gloss wenge wood, which has been decorated with bronze detailing. The focus of this project was to retain the classical layout of a Chelsea townhouse with a formal reception and dining room, but to

allow the spaces to be opened up through large sliding doors. When the sliding doors throughout the townhouse are opened, a view takes you from the formal reception to the kitchen – where deep Imperial marble and blue tones connect the contemporary kitchen to the classic front of the house. The ground floor kitchen has been equipped with kitchen supplier, Bulthaup’s, latest metallic finish on two islands to contribute to the clean colour palette that is evident throughout the design. The joinery found in the kitchen is produced from a dark timber, which gives the kitchen a sophisticated, city-home feel. The townhouse is home to a master bedroom alongside a further five guest suites. The master en-suite is adorned in Calacatta Oro marble.

The master vanity has also been designed to match the marble theme that runs throughout the townhouse. Leading onto the guest bedrooms, bespoke wardrobes were installed by using luxury timber finishes and leather to create a unique feel to each room. The five guest ensuite bathrooms have also been individually designed to enhance different design intents, again finished in marble and equipped with bespoke fitted vanity units. Standards are incredibly high for buyers searching in the Royal Borough. The area is filled with unique charm and character. With Chelsea being famous for its design flair and eclectic image, nu:builds have set the benchmark for modern, city living with this project. nubuilds.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

A wave of texture Buddha Bar, in Dubai has recently revealed a stunning new interior, which takes sophistication to new heights. This new interior includes a bespoke piece of artwork running throughout the venue – Scales by Giles Miller Studio.

S

pecialist in the development of innovative surface and sculptural design, Giles Miller Studio, was commissioned to create the artwork for Buddha Bar’s new luxurious bar front and other areas within the venue.

Buddha Bar approached Giles Miller Studio wanting to create something truly opulent that referenced the Far East and the heritage of the bar. Buddha Bar had an idea of something sweeping that could be repeated throughout the venue.

research and images of reptile skins Below: The surface undulates with each individual tile reflecting the scales of the surface

They also wanted to utilise the studio’s subtle techniques of using light, reflection and texture to create something special and bespoke to them. Giles Miller Studio’s initial mood boards included research and images of reptile skins, which was a success. The scheme was based on a Chinese dragon to fulfil Buddha Bar’s request of a repeated piece of art that could sweep through the venue. The Wellington tile was selected for this job, to evoke the feeling of a Chinese dragon’s beautiful and reflective scales. The tiles attributed to the desired look and feel of a Chinese dragon; the surface undulates, twisting and turning with each individual tile reflecting the scales of the surface. There is a subtle pattern which shows a gradient running through the surface, once again referencing to a Chinese dragon’s skin. The artwork has been applied to a variety of bar fronts within the Buddha Bar, including all four sides of the Roberta grill counter and two long undulating bar fronts. In total, the artwork’s combined length is an epic 33m. The Wellington tiles were applied to a specialist MDF backing. Resulting in each tile simply slotting together onsite to create the seamless, expansive artwork.

The project was based on one cohesive piece of artwork that could be repeated throughout the Buddha Bar; something that could be instantly recognisable and striking in different areas throughout the venue. Giles Miller Studio selected three different glazes to enhance the organic undulating pattern which sweeps across all the bar fronts. The pallet is a mix of bronze and gun metals, this colour range was selected to fit within the wider interior design scheme that the Buddha Bar informed the studio of. The rich colour tones further enhance the feeling of dragon skin/ scales and oriental opulence. This diamond tile is laid facing in one of two directions to enable large scale imagery and are composed to accentuate a wave of texture in the surface. The pattern in the scales can only be seen if the tiles are installed in order and correctly. Each tile is supplied with a number on the panel which is then slotted together and installed onsite by contractors. As is always the case with the studio’s work, the tiles were initially assembled by hand in its studio space in Hoxton, East London. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Here teams of artists and creatives came together to assemble each individual piece to create this largescale composition. Texture is an important part of Giles Miller Studio’s process as texture aids to create each individual piece of artwork. Clients can base a design on its existing range of surfaces – like the Wellington tile – but it is the texture and orientation of the tiles that create each bespoke piece of artwork.

Top: The artwork has been applied to a variety of bar fronts within the Buddha Bar Above: Each tile is supplied with a number on the panel which is then slotted together

Giles Miller Studio composes thousands of sculptural components in such a way that they illustrate imagery purely through their composition and reflection of the surrounding light. Buddha Bar’s reference “a wealth of sensory experiences awaits – colours, textures, taste,” is reflected in its surrounding environment. The venue’s unique design details combine to create a truly immersive and playful dining experience. gilesmiller.com «

Down to earth Concrete, distressed steel, unfinished plywood and reclaimed antiques feature inside the new Terry Design office, In comparison to its previous office Terry Design longed for a space that was bright and airy. With the use of reclaimed timber Terry Design has created its own minimal HQ.

F

urniture design company Terry Design, produced the furniture for its own HQ based in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The office is intentionally designed to be minimal with accents of retro blue and reclaimed pendant lights. A large portion of the space at Terry Design’s HQ is dominated by the central workstations, which the company feel encourages a collaborative environment for its employees. The central reclaimed timber desks are connected with a rubbed steel divider offering practical storage for staff and a plinth for desktops. Terry Design wanted chairs that were well designed, both ergonomically and visually for its HQ. Using Herman Miller Aeron office chairs complement the blackened steel frames of the bespoke office desks.

Repurposed old flooring timbers clad the dividing wall with a linear window offering glimpses into the company workspace from the reception. This window accentuates the linear layout of the interior and due to the linear window not sitting directly at eye-level, it provides enough privacy for the office staff, yet enables the team to see if they have any guests in the foyer. A 77-drawer reclaimed apothecary unit has been beautifully restored and is now home to all Terry Design samples and stationery. The unfinished plywood storage unit stretches the length of the office. The unit was salvaged from the Belfast Metropolitan building and was badly faded with strong discolouration on the top and damage to the edges. Many of the drawers with dull brass handles had swollen over time and were difficult to open. To restore the unit Terry Design sanded it lightly to retain the aged look of the timber. Edges were then filled with INEX-ONLINE.COM

new timber which Terry Design distressed. Stain was rubbed into the whole unit, giving the timber a new lease of life, and then waxed to protect it. The brass handles were rubbed down with wire wool, the purpose of this was not to bring these back to their shiny beginnings. Terry Design’s project for its own HQ involved the use of reclaimed wood in various spaces throughout the office. Terry Design wanted to create an office that incorporated the use of reclaimed wood through its love of character and authenticity that reclaimed wood brings to an interior that cannot be recreated from fresh timber. Offcuts of reclaimed wood were also used to create Terry Design’s bespoke ‘T’ featured at the back of the room. The ‘T’ – part of the Terry Design brand – is emblazoned onto the back of its work vans and bright yellow tool boxes onsite. Offcuts of reclaimed timber in a variation of species were used to create a more textured effect for this branding. The retro blue colour palette featured around the office contributes “a little attitude” into the space as the tone is calming and cool and contrasts with the anthracite ceiling. The retro blue pendant lights have been salvaged from a factory in England. Terry HQ had put up with a dismal office for many years and longed for a space that felt bright and airy and wouldn’t date quickly. Terry Design felt that a minimal and contemporary environment would be refreshing and help to free the mind of its employees.

Terry is a forward-thinking company with a detail-led approach that is constantly evolving. Terry wanted an interior that reflects its down to earth attitude. The reclaimed timber will wear and weather with age, needing little upkeep, and the use of birch ply is a

nod to its more Scandinavian tastes. Terry has taken industrial elements such as factory lighting, steel and reclaimed timber and worked them into an otherwise minimal and contemporary space to create its new HQ. terrydesign.co.uk «

44 PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Left: Keep the design simple but functional Below: Trends come and go and although they may be exciting they may not always be the right choice for longevity

Choosing design trend and longevity for your ‘forever’ house

Looking at new houses under development you will notice simple designs with dark windows, cladding and gallery style entrances. But what about the front door? Elizabeth Assaf, Designer at Urban Front, offers her advice on front door choices.

T

he general consensus is that doors are easy to specify but the reality is that the choice becomes complicated on a few different levels, not only because of design but more so for longevity of design and its ability to define the entrance and keep within a certain trend. The trends edging more to the unconventional have meant that larger doors are more popular with increasingly daring colours and surface design; in particular this year Urban Front has produced more yellow doors than ever before. You may argue that ‘good design’ never goes out of fashion despite the colours. I will retaliate by saying that some ‘good designs’ can be tricky in gaining longevity, especially when colour and pattern is involved – it’s about avoiding something too outlandish but still keeping a sense of individuality. Modernism is an example of this nowadays. Le Corbusier is identified as a symbol of good, long-lasting design – it’s distinctive and functional. INEX-ONLINE.COM

So to put that all into perspective, what would be the best way to gain longevity with your front door choice? An ability to be striking and impressive but timeless may seem to be nearly impossible to achieve on a door. Here are a few ways to achieve this:

3. As few gadgets as possible. Finger print entry and electric latches are difficult to replace and upgrade without damaging the door so its is best to do without if you would like to maintain the door over time.

1. Keep the design simple but functional. Vertical grain designs are more likely to stand the test of time and remain classic.

‘Good design’ can easily be achieved if trend isn’t really in the equation. Trends come and go and although they may be exciting they may not always be the right choice for longevity. urbanfront.com « info@urbanfront.co.uk « 01494 778787 «

2. Subdued colours and hardwood that is lighter in colour – raw being the functional word here.

4. Going as large in width and height as possible – large doors are timeless.

Craven Dunnill expands potential of wood-look with striking new tile formats The preference for choosing porcelain floor tiles that replicate natural wood, rather than installing real wood floors, is set to become mainstream with the introduction of two new tile ranges from Craven Dunnill, Timber Plus and Timber Slim.

A

vailable in versatile new tile formats, these tile ranges make possible a variety of attractive floor pattern permutations and effects, including herringbone and chevron layouts. These woodlook tiles meet the rigours of daily life without sacrificing any of the decorative appeal of natural wood. The Timber Slim glazed porcelain range is available in five different wood hues: white, beige, taupe, brown and grey. The narrow plank format of just 700 x 100mm is fundamental to the creation of patterned layouts. In contrast, the Timber Plus glazed porcelain range is available in an extra long plank format of 1200 x 200mm. These tiles are perfect for open-plan living as they minimise the frequency of joints and achieve a spacious look. Timber Slim and Timber Plus tiles are suitable for both floor and walls. Whilst natural wood is an attractive floor covering, porcelain wood-look tiles are more practical and hard-wearing.

Key attributes include: l Low maintenance – porcelain can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. l Suitable for installing – throughout the house, including areas where spills are common. l Ideal for underfloor heating – porcelain is one of the best conductors of heat for floors. l Durable – porcelain is robust and withstands heavy foot traffic. cravendunnill.co.uk « 01746 761611 « info@cravendunnill.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM

5. BLANCO’s induction hobs are a clever energy-saving way of cooking. The induction hobs provide an energy-efficient method of cooking. A magnetic field instantly transforms the pan into a heat source; with the pan heating the contents – and not the hob – reducing electricity bills. The automatic pan recognition ensures the only section of the hob to heat up is the section with the pot on top. The heating zone automatically heats up as soon as it senses a pan with a smooth, flat base and metal content. This ensures that the hob will not heat up smaller items such as metal spoons that are accidentally left on the induction zones. www.blanco.co.uk 01923 635200
