T
he beginning of 2017 marks a new year for trends in the interior design world, but it’s also a time to reflect on the past year’s interior trends. This month, Inex takes a look at a collaboration between global interior trade network eporta and renowned, leading trend service WGSN, which has revealed what trends were popular throughout the industry during the past year. From ‘the most searched for’ materials and products to lights and themes, eporta and WGSN expose what was big in 2016 and what trends may be here to stay for the year ahead. Turn to page 14 to find out more. Another trend that appears to be a non-mover for 2017 is copper. In this issue, the Copper Development Association – a Copper Alliance member – explains where our longstanding admiration of this leading material has stemmed from and why numerous design studios are opting to use this dominant metal in furniture design. Boasting numerous advantages, copper can offer a hygiene boost and attribute to ‘green’ design. To find out more on this popular red metal, turn to page 32. Elsewhere in this issue, Mayfair’s latest bar offering, MNKY HSE, opens its doors to stage a vibrant blend of London funk and Latin spirit in this opulent area of London, Fromental reveals how its high-end wallpaper design has provided the perfect environment for a wedding function space at Macau’s Ritz-Carlton, and Bemz – known for its designer covers for IKEA furniture – explains the importance of using recycled products in interior schemes. I hope you enjoy this edition. The best of the best Lucy Clark and Katie Singleton, Founders of interior design studio Olive Design Studio, talk to Inex about how they started their careers within the interiors industry and how they work together to curate impeccable designs.
C
an you please provide us with a description of your professional careers? K: Having studied new media production at university, I joined the television industry where I was involved in writing and directing children’s television programmes as well as set design. In my early 20s, I decided on a complete career change and enrolled at the KLC School of Interior Design in Chelsea Harbour going on to spend several years working for high-end interior designers. L: From an early age, I developed a keen eye and passion for the arts and history at school and went on to study history of art and architecture at university where I became increasingly aware of man’s ability to create incredible buildings and interior spaces with an ever-evolving array of materials. It was a natural step to train in London as an architectural interior designer going on to work for high-end interior design companies. INEX-ONLINE.COM
What inspired you both to become interior designers? K: My interest in interior design started at an early age as a small child, I remember changing my bedroom furnishings around on a weekly basis! L: Colour, texture, light and the natural world have always fascinated me. From my earliest memories of a favourite double aspect bedroom flooded with light and wonderful views, I have felt a real connection with how important living spaces are to everyone.
How did you both come to meet? K: We met whilst working for the same interior design company in London. We worked on several projects together both in the UK and abroad and had an instant rapport both as friends and work colleagues.
9 INSIGHT
L: We both have the highest standards of professionalism and passionately shared a vision of starting our own studio. So, it was a natural progression to open Olive Design Studio, which we did in 2012.
Top left: Lucy and Katie introduced several specialist finishes, such as silk and grasscloth wallpapers, into Eaton Place’s scheme Above: The pair were very sympathetic to Chelsea cottage’s surrounding area and ensured a timeless renovation was achieved Left: Lucy and Katie met whilst working for the same interior design company in London Top right: Eaton Place’s core palette was an earthy, textured scheme introducing Asian floral prints with pops of orange and teal blues Above right: Katie believes that Olive Design Studio has brought a new generation of interior designers to the industry
Do you have individual design styles? If so, how do you merge your styles together? K: Being an interior designer you need to be flexible and able to work on all kinds of projects. We both have country roots which definitely gives us a similar design aesthetic. We both love eclectic interiors that mix the old and new to create an air of understated elegance. L: We both know that understanding our clients is key. We love meeting people and working out how best we can help them to realise their ideal interiors.
What do you both personally believe that Olive Design Studio has brought to the interiors industry? K: We like to think that Olive Design is part of a new generation of interior designers and that we have created our own look and style with our fantastic team of highly talented individuals. L: Having just won a five-star award for the ‘Best Interior Design Apartment London’ at the UK Property Awards, judged by distinguished professionals across the property spectrum, we are thrilled and feel that we must be getting something right! INEX-ONLINE.COM
10 INSIGHT
What do you believe is the biggest challenge for today’s interior designers? K: In today’s market, the margins for property development have become a lot tighter. Consequently, developers often allocate smaller budgets for the interior design elements of a project yet still expect us to achieve the same level of sophistication. L: Yes, although you can still be just as creative with a restricted budget and still create that understated elegance that underpins all our work. What has been Olive Design Studio’s biggest accomplishment to date? L: We have just celebrated our fourth birthday and can honestly say we are well on our way to achieving everything we set out to do. We’ve assembled a very talented team of people who share our values and have completed some prestigious projects for loyal clients with more in the pipeline.
Do you each have a favourite part of your job? K: I love the sociable aspect of our job. We are always meeting new and interesting people whether it’s clients, subcontractors, builders or suppliers. I’m very much a people person and love building up these new relationships. L: I’m very much a people person too, but having the opportunity to work on any building, understanding its history, location and construction is what continues to inspire me, particularly those of historic significance where I can take my work to another level.
Do you each have a favourite project that you have worked on under Olive Design Studio? K: Every project has been very different and I personally don’t have a favourite! I loved our Dorset Street project and Chelsea Loft Apartment as we totally transformed the footprint of both these spaces and it was a real challenge to introduce a lot more light, storage and space into these interiors. L: All projects are favourites in their individual way but if I had to pick one, it would be our latest at Portland Place. It has given the team the perfect opportunity to be creative in many areas, designing bespoke chandeliers, a metalwork decorative screen and unique joinery.
Can you talk us through your concept for your project at Cadogan Gardens? L: The existing interiors of this project were very dated and we were given the task of retaining the eclectic style and tastes of our clients yet making the interiors feel fresh and timeless. K: The clients were incredibly happy and I think the photographs speak for themselves!
INEX-ONLINE.COM
What do you believe is the most important skill to have when it comes to interior design? K: People skills are vital. It’s very important to be able to take a brief and understand the exact requirements and needs of one’s clients. L: Alongside communication, it’s about being organised. Good administration skills are vital if you want a project to run smoothly. It’s all about check, check and check again! Do you both have favourite fabrics that you enjoy working with? K: We both love fabric houses such as de Le Cuona, Rubelli, Fox Linton and Lelieve which supply a lot of natural products such as silks, cottons and linens. These fabrics remind me of my family home and country roots as well as my desire to work on a beautiful beachside property. L: We like luxury silks, wools and subtle patterns which work equally well in a London apartment and in a chateau in the south of France with their natural richness and subtle undertones.
11 INSIGHT
You work on a lot of developments, are there any recurring requirements you are witnessing in these developments? K: Recently there has been a trend for a space to be adapted and reconfigured so that it is very much one space and therefore open-plan, light and airy. The bigger and more spacious an interior feels the better!
Top left: Specially commissioned artworks have been subtly added into
Do you have a favourite palette to work with? L: You can never go wrong with a neutral palette and bringing pops of colour in through artwork, cushions and accessories. We recently saw a trend for grey interiors and I personally love to mix these tones with blues and purples or even the odd pop of yellow, copper and gold. K: I have just refurbished my own home with a very similar palette yet kept it fresh by mixing in lots of off-whites, mirror glass walls and some stunning decorative feature wallpapers which I used in my new baby’s nursery and downstairs cloakroom.

What was the concept behind your Chelsea cottage scheme? L: We were commissioned to renovate a beautiful but rundown Chelsea cottage, a stone’s throw from King’s Road. Our client lived in Yorkshire and it was agreed we would provide a turnkey service with limited client involvement. We were very sympathetic to the surrounding area and ensured a timeless renovation was achieved for the lettings market whilst also paying great attention to the construction costs.

And what about your design at Eaton Place? L: The client’s primary residence was in Singapore and the brief was to subtly introduce a masculine, minimalist, Middle Eastern aesthetic whilst at the same time valuing the very classical, historic interior. K: We introduced several specialist finishes, such as silk and grasscloth wallpapers in the bedrooms and cloakroom as well as a stunning dark shellac-lacquered floor in the main sitting/dining areas. L: Carefully selected chandeliers were chosen to reflect the integrity of the period features of the property while timeless Italian furniture by Minotti and retro lamps by Serge Mouille were introduced to enhance the feeling of opulence while providing a key bridge linking the classic with the styles of today. Specially commissioned artworks have been subtly added to reflect the client’s personal taste. The core palette was an earthy, textured scheme introducing Asian floral prints with pops of orange and teal blues which bring the interior to life in a very gentle, eclectic yet timeless way. What can we expect to see from Olive Design Studio this year? K: Well, we have a very exciting year ahead. Not only have we got some great projects in the pipeline, we will also be working on our very own furniture and rug range. Watch this space! L: We’ve also been busy developing relationships with the aerospace and yachting industry with a view to designing interiors for airport lounges, VIP areas, aeroplanes, motor boats, yachts and much more. theolivedesignstudio.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Last year’s findings eporta, one of the fastest growing and largest global interior trade networks, has collaborated with world-leading trend service, WGSN, to analyse and share the buying trends and insights from its search data from last year.
H
ere, the top 10 findings are listed with data based on eporta’s community of more than 3000 trade buyers, many of whom use the platform daily. These interior trade findings and trends for 2016 were presented by Aneeqa Khan, CEO and Founder of eporta, and Lisa White, Head of Lifestyle & Interiors at WGSN, during a seminar at C.P. Hart, Waterloo. 1. Most searched for materials: brass, marble, concrete and cork The most searched for materials were brass and marble (a 32% increase between July to September), while cork and concrete gained popularity (up 42%) over the last months of the year. Popular products in these materials revealed that trade buyers are seeking a look with more texture, depth and patina. WGSN noted that this is in line with an emerging trend for a ‘soft industrial’ aesthetic, which mixes warm looks, like brass and cork, with cooler marble and concrete. The use of softer colour and iridescent petrol finishes are also key for residential, public and retail spaces. The increase of high-end products in concrete and cork was particularly prevalent, with these materials being used in unexpected ways – as furniture, dining trays and lampshades in thinner, more tactile finishes and warmer colour schemes. 2. Most searched for products: bar stools, extendable tables, nesting tables and stackable chairs and most difficult to source products: bedside tables and furniture for children’s rooms Interior trade buyers are extremely concerned with buying furniture that is multifunctional and can adapt to different spaces and uses. WGSN credits this to the continued rise in ‘homtertainment’, where our interiors are expected to perform multiple functions – particularly amongst millennials INEX-ONLINE.COM
who host parties, concerts and film projections in their own homes. Trade buyers also professed particular difficulty sourcing bedside tables and furniture for children’s rooms. 3. Most popular light: the chandelier In lighting, the most searched for and wide-ranging lighting style was the chandelier. Whether as traditional crystal or calderesque mobiles, all were designed to create a statement and used as a centrepiece. According to Lisa White of WGSN, central ceiling lights function like jewellery for the home, both in function and style. 4. Key theme: trend for furniture that frames a lifestyle and items that will grow with you A deep dive into the most ordered products on eporta revealed a strong trend in unobtrusive furniture that has a strong sense of style and yet doesn’t absorb too much visual space; where the frame is accented and the body is transparent, minimalist display cabinets and wardrobes, or hanging spaces that allow you to see the clothes. According to Lisa, “people are increasingly buying furniture that can display our lifestyles in a curated way. As we buy less but better quality, we want
to showcase and frame favourite objects and pieces in furniture that is both discreet and adaptable”. 5. Key theme: furniture and interiors increasingly replacing traditional ‘art’ There has been a 43% rise in searches for statement rugs on eporta over the last quarter alone, plus a marked increase in upholstery and wallpaper with elaborate artistic repeats. The most popular interior accessories changed over the year from vases and candles to more abstract design objects. According to trends noted by WGSN, this is about elevating confident, contemporary design to the level of a masterpiece. 6. Key theme: ‘designed to order will be the new order’ There was a direct correlation between the most popular suppliers and the degree of customisation options available. Aside from this being a practicality and requirement of the interior trade, WGSN identified this as a trend throughout interiors and lifestyle with walls and floors receiving the same degree of personalisation as furniture and lighting: it predicts that ‘designed to order will be the new order’.

7. Most popular brands As digital partner, eporta revealed that Mullan Lighting, Duistt and Libra were the most searched or connected brands amongst trade buyers during London Design Festival, alongside Bert Frank, The Sofa & Chair Company and Benchmark. 8. Ones to watch eporta is a unique design meritocracy, in that products from top design brands are displayed in search results against products from brand-new designers. This allows the products to speak for themselves and the best designs to rise to the surface. Some less well-known design brands that have experienced particular traction on eporta over the last six months include Shufflebotham, Missana, Intueri Light, Abalon candles, Evie, 17 Patterns and Floor Story. Lisa White identified Matteo Thun’s Atelier, Wrong London, Areti and Pedro Paulo Venzon as some of the key brands to watch during 2017.
10. Key theme: biomimicry WGSN noted eporta’s trade community buying into items with natural patterns – feather repeats, kaleidoscopic patterns with palms and ferns adorning a range of surfaces but in a looser form with sea-inspired furnishings and transparent and rough surfaces resembling the natural world, in both natural and supernatural colours and textures. wgsn.com « eporta.com «
9. Most popular country: Portugal Analysis revealed that overall the most popular origin for suppliers at the moment is Portugal. Most popular brands include Duistt, TemaHome, Larforma, Ginger and Jagger and Mambo Unlimited Ideas. INEX-ONLINE.COM
16 HOME OFFICE
Well-designed home office furniture works wonders Working from home is on the increase and finding a suitable space at home that will fit everything your clients need is a task in itself. It is essential to prioritise and draw a layout of the current space. Make a list of what you have and new purchases that could be made – such as new, shiny furniture for your client’s home office. There is a considerable difference between designing a home office space from designing a commercial office space.
W
orking from home is an exciting prospect and one that evokes a sense of comfort. But there is also a fine line between comfort and casual. It is important to create a balance between domesticity and function in a home in order to ensure that it is a step towards the right direction of success. Adding wall art or accent colours to the wall, seating for visitors/clients as well as ergonomically-designed chairs and desks with appropriate lighting can add a change of perspective. Furniture plays a key role in defining your workspace at home. Health, safety and welfare are important and specific items that are chosen should be well-designed with ergonomics in mind to promote health and wellbeing whilst conducting daily work tasks. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Over recent years, furniture manufacturers have researched and invested time and money into ergonomics. This has resulted in significant improvements in adjustability and comfort for computer users without the need to spend an extortionate amount of money into buying furniture. A well-designed chair should not only be aesthetically-pleasing to the eye, but should allow the user to adjust controls to suit and fit their body shape whilst looking after the back and the spine. Foot rests are also essential as well wrist pads to take off pressure, allowing rest and relaxation to these parts of the body. The right desk is also essential and one that most people overlook. For example, the surface space is an essential part of people’s dayto-day work routine; paper trays, pencil cups, notepads, telephones and computers can take up much of this space. An organised desk attributes a key role in productivity. Additionally, if a person works more than two days from home they should consider investing
in a sit/stand desk to avoid back pain and promote a healthy and active working position at all times. Research has found that moving from a sitting to standing position helps the user feel more energised, aiding better concentration, increased productivity, reduced back problems and can help burn up to three times more calories. Furniturise promotes furniture which reacts to the needs of the human frame whilst incorporating a variety of ergonomically-designed seating available in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, textures and high-quality materials. The group also offers a range of desk options to suit any space and style, including autonomy desking which uses the latest in sit/stand technology to allow for active working. S

Every year in February for 65 years, the fair has been drawing buyers, architects, designers and journalists to Stockholm. The energy of the fair overflows into the city, where events, exhibitions and parties are organised as part of Stockholm Design Week. Stockholmsmässan arranged its first furniture fair in 1951. Since then, the fair has grown exponentially and is now considered to be the second largest fair in Europe after Salone del Mobile in Milan. Every year, Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair draws approximately 40,000 visitors from more than 60 countries, of which around 7000 are foreign architects, buyers, designers and press representatives. Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair fills Stockholmsmässan’s 70,000m2 to the brim with the latest products for both home and public environments. Visitors are met by an informative and inspirational mix of new products, materials, knowledge, trends and new business and contacts, in addition to INEX-ONLINE.COM
new environmentally-friendly and technological solutions. The exhibitions meet the highest standards and the lecture program, Stockholm Design & Architecture Talks, covers a wide range of topics. From Tuesday to Friday, the focus is on industry visitors, and then on Saturday, the final day of the fair, the doors open to the general public. One of the fair’s highlights is its ‘guest of honour’, an internationallyrecognised designer who is invited to create an installation in Stockholmsmässan’s entrance hall. For 2017, this title has been awarded to Spanish Artist and Designer Jaime Hayon, known for his playful expression and versatile production. Previous ‘guests of honour’ include Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic, Giulio Cappellini, Ineke Hans, Paul Smith, Arik Levy, Inga Sempé, Oki Sato/Nendo, GamFratesi, Ilse Crawford and Barber & Osgerby. Several highlights at the fair include Greenhouse, where new talents are given the opportunity to display their prototypes and meet furniture manufacturers, and Design Bar, where a Nordic designer, or group of designers, invites visitors to take a break in a combined exhibition/
restaurant. The assignment to create the show’s Design Bar for 2017 has gone to Note Design Studio. Using the concept ‘sulla bocca di tutti’, which means ‘on everybody’s lips’, the studio’s goal is to create a warm, inspirational and generous experience. The Design Bar will be created this time in cooperation with Isabella Morrone, Head Chef at Mother in Stockholm. At the fair, visitors can also draw inspiration from the Trend Exhibition which has been created by Stylist, Lotta Agaton. The exhibition will offer contrasts in materials and furniture as well as surprising combinations. stockholmdesignweek.com « stockholmfurniturefair.com «

Talking about his design process for the BAMBA collection, Kevin comments: “The BAMBA collection’s entire process is really an orchestrated effort to realise a design. It takes an entire orchestra/ team to help bring the ideas and designs to life.” He continues: “The reality is that 30 or so individuals work in concert to create our collections and complete our projects. Each one plays an important role – each one has their own story.” Kevin believes that there is more than one purpose to lighting, as he explains: “A well-designed fixture serves as a sculpture. I believe what is equally important is the necessity to provide illumination. We attempt to balance these two aspects in most of our offerings. Many are unaware of the profound effect that
lighting/illumination has on people and spaces, but it is up to those specifying lighting fixtures to be aware and provide the best lighting option for their client.” Ideas for Kevin’s designs occur constantly. Most are forgotten or discarded, but every now or again, one stands out or sticks with him. He then starts working on creating a model or prototype to explore that particular idea more thoroughly, and then, based on its merits, Kevin and his team decide whether to produce the design or not. During
the entire process, Kevin and his team continue to be sensitive to their client’s needs, schedules and requests. “The BAMBA, in particular, was conceived as a very simple, tailored design, to be both aesthetically-pleasing and functional; one that is easy to use or place. It is engineered to provide any level of illumination needed and can easily be modified or amended – and it also plays well with others or can be used as a centerpiece or focal point,” explains Kevin. The year ahead is yet to be discovered for Kevin and his team. “With much collaboration with many clients, we already know this year will provide us with many new opportunities and designs. However exactly what new offerings we’ll present is a mystery even to myself,” concludes Kevin. kevinreillylighting.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Bridal beauty Project Director at HBA Singapore, Tonya Burke, explains how HBA – an interior design firm – and high-end wallpaper designer, Fromental, came together to produce the ultimate wedding experience at the Ritz-Carlton, Macau.
T
he resort is part of the large-scale Galaxy Entertainment development and this is the first all-suite Ritz-Carlton to host a completely private function space specialising in wedding events. The interior’s architectural style is classic European, evoking a sense of timeless glamour. To accentuate this within the interiors, we selected classic and modern furniture as well as decorative lighting, punctuated by occasional vibrant colours in carpets, fabrics and artwork. INEX-ONLINE.COM
I personally worked exclusively with Fromental from the initial conception of the project until installation. Knowing Fromental’s range of classic and timeless patterns combined with their limitless colour range, artful embroidery, fine handpainted details and large-scale capabilities, they were a perfect fit. Fromental offer an exceptional service. They were in our office regularly. Fromental’s Co-founder, Tim Butcher, also made special trips from London to coordinate the designs with me right from the start, explaining new possibilities of working with their
existing range and creating sampling specific to the interior selections. In many instances, wallcoverings from Fromental’s standard collections inspired the interior space. The ‘Wedding Atelier’ is a perfect example. I started the design scheme with their scenic magnolia wallcovering as the basis, which became the feature of the room. The blush and ivory colours combined with warm brown achieves the soft palette desired for a bridal experience yet the magnolia pattern has depth and strength. I intentionally avoided floral and too much pink which would have looked garish. The magnolia wallcovering was the lead colour palette and I selected the surrounding materials to suit it. The magnolia is not limited to the dining area, the wallcovering covers nearly every wall in the Wedding Atelier.

Our concept started while designing the suites, inspired by urban residences in Paris, but for the Ritz Macau we aimed for more minimal ornaments in the interior design, saving the detailing and layering of materials and furnishings. Fromental created the panoramic layout for the space taking into account the architectural ornamentation to ensure the design ran on. Once approved, the design was hand-painted onto silk paper-backed panels with touches of hand-embroidery on the petals. As with the magnolia, the minute I saw the sampling of the Chinon in the Clark colourway it became the inspiration and lead for the ballroom prefunction. It evokes a timeless glamour and lends an exotic feel to the space with its oversized Oriental botanicals and birds. I just love this pattern and the colour palette worked beautifully with our Italian marble scheme. The Ritz Club lounge was designed inspired by a luxurious Parisian residence, where every room is unique yet maintains the same level of interior detailing, such as the wall panels. Yet I didn’t want to repeat marble in every room. Fromental’s Caissons design is installed in the two library rooms that flank the living room, which has marble wall panels. Their Caisson Trompe L’oeil hand-painted panel pattern was perfect for this reason. We worked with Fromental to achieve the maximum panel size to fit perfectly within the wood panelled rooms. I selected the millwork paint colours to match the blue and the grey of the Caissons wallcoverings, so again, the wallpaper covers the entire space. fromental.co.uk « hba.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

32 COPPER
Copper – why we love it Copper is humanity’s oldest metal. Its essentiality extends from our diets –1mg of copper per day helps keep us healthy – to our electronic devices. The bronze age is named for our first copper alloy (copper and tin) and the red metal remains at the cutting edge of technological innovation today.
O
ften hidden away, this hard-working metal has recently been placed in the spotlight by designers rediscovering its beauty and myriad of valuable properties. In this article, the Copper Development Association (CDA) – part of the Copper Alliance – takes a look at our long-standing love affair with copper, and why it’s now a hot design trend. With studios including Tom Dixon and Buster + Punch leading the way, copper is becoming a familiar sight in the pages of home and interior design magazines. Alongside one of its most well-known alloys – brass (copper and zinc) – it is prized for bringing warmth and colour to interiors. Capable of taking a high polish, the metals can also provide reflective surfaces to bring light and a sense of greater size to a given space. Malleable and ductile, copper and its alloys are easy to work. Intricate details can be achieved with a wide variety of tools and techniques, a rainbow of colours can be coaxed out of the metals with the application of heat, and if a product needs to stand up to rough treatment, brass offers great resilience – alongside its distinctive golden shine. Another appealing feature of copper is that its colour palette will naturally change over time when exposed to the elements, from its gleaming new form, through to rich browns to the vivid green patina of vintage copper. It can be advanced to, and held at, any stage of its development using a variety of treatments and techniques, offering a wealth of options unique to this metal. In addition to these familiar properties, copper can also offer a hygiene boost when used unlacquered. It is inherently antimicrobial, meaning it will rapidly eliminate bacteria, viruses and fungi that settle on its surface. It shares this benefit with a range of copper alloys – including brass and bronze – creating a family of metals named ‘antimicrobial copper’. Antimicrobial copper is appearing
rainscreens, solar shading and opaque cladding, or internally as partitions, screens and other interior design elements. Transparency can be generated by stretching or piercing copper sheet, or weaving copper wire into a mesh. In sheet form, copper is easy to water-cut and perforate in various ways, and the different shades of colour and surface treatments widen the design possibilities even further. Designers such as Michael Anastassiades regularly use brass for lighting, from small table lamps through to large-scale, ceilingmounted room lights. The red metal can also contribute to ‘green design’. The recycling rate of copper is higher than that of any other metal – approximately nine million tonnes are recycled every year, meeting 40% of the world’s copper demand. The recycling process doesn’t result in any loss of properties, so copper can be endlessly recycled, perhaps going from a saucepan to laptop circuitry, building facade to light shade, or plumbing tube to hospital bed rail! copperalliance.org.uk «
in the form of frequently-touched surfaces such as door furniture, taps, light switches and hand rails in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Several companies also offer options for the home, particularly in the kitchen where hygiene is a concern. Brass door furniture was once a common sight in homes and hospitals alike, but over time other materials supplanted it. Now, designers are taking a fresh look at its aesthetics and superior workability to produce exciting new designs, with architectural ironmongers, such as Philip Watts Design, offering door and furniture handles that give an adventurous, modern twist to an old favourite. The use of copper mesh and perforated copper sheets offers a new design dimension for buildings. They can be used externally as INEX-ONLINE.COM

39 SURFACE DESIGN SHOW PREVIEW
Surface Design Show unveils the most innovative surfaces from across the world From 7 to 9th February, the Surface Design Show returns to London’s Business Design Centre, where the newest and most exciting surfaces will be showcased to an audience of architects, specifiers and designers.
T
he only event in the UK to focus solely on interior and exterior surfaces, the Surface Design Show connects stimulating surfaces with its audience, as well as allowing opportunities to network and take part in a packed programme of events and talks from industry experts. Over 130 exhibitors have confirmed this year, including tiling and stone companies, architectural lighting and textile designers and flooring and wallcovering companies. Returning for 2017 is Altfield, a leading resource for beautiful textiles, wallcoverings and leather which prides itself on discovering stunning materials for as diverse environments as superyachts, top restaurants, five-star hotels, boutique shops and residential homes. Whilst Scotscape also returns with its stunning living walls which have been used in residential homes as well as with commercial clients including M&S and Aveda. International exhibitors include Pintark from India which designs leather surfaces in numerous designs, including a stunning geometric pattern. Fontanili Marble has 80 years of history in the Italian stone business and is renowned for offering the highest quality stone for the most advanced manufacturing projects.
New exhibitors for 2017 include Nordcell one of the industry’s leading suppliers of European timber panels including oak, poplar, pine, walnut, maple, beech and birch. Also making its debut is Lovell Stone – a supplier of quality British stone which can be used in many different ways, from large blocks of building stone to intricate pieces that can be cut into precise designs. Light School, presented by Light Collective and supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals, has successfully educated and inspired attendees on the important relationship between light and surfaces since 2014. Light School consists of three parts: Product School, Light Talks, sponsored by Luctra, and the School Newspaper, sponsored by Xicato. Product School provides architects and designers with a comprehensive review of lighting innovation and the latest technology. Exhibitors include Spectral, Visive and Applelec, the manufacturer of LED Light Sheet which has been used in such diverse spaces as Mulberry and the Natural History Museum. A star-studded line-up of speakers at Light Talks, sponsored by Luctra, ensures everyone attending is sure to ‘graduate’ in the lighting world. The Light School newspaper is sent out to 70,000 architects, designers and
specifiers, plus every attendee gets a free copy to take away at the end of the ‘school day’. Surface Spotlight Live, which debuted in 2016, is an exciting opportunity for architects and designers to see the best of advanced materials in two highlighted fields – 2017 will focus on hospitality and education. Trend and colour expert Sally Angharad will curate the area presenting materials that make a significant contribution to both areas. 2016 saw 5699 visitors attend Surface Design Show, a significant increase from 2015. The professional and trade visitors consisted of architectural, interior design, lighting design or multi-design practices, with 36% choosing to attend Surface Design over any other architectural design show. surfacedesignshow.com «

The importance of using recycled products in interior design According to the World Bank, the textile industry is responsible for 17-20% of global water pollution. Other sources state that dyeing fabrics uses on average 100-150 litres of water for every litre of dyed fabric. Dyeing textiles significantly contributes to the consumption of water and is also responsible for adding volatile chemicals that are harmful to health and our air.
I
t is estimated that the yearly global consumption of water used for dyeing textiles could fill 1.6 million Olympic-sized swimming pools, equivalent to more than 126,000 litres of water every second, or 4000 billion litres of water per year.
INEX-ONLINE.COM
In 2015, Bemz, known for designer covers of IKEA furniture, took the next step in its commitment to the environment with the launch of Bemz Respect, a collection that has sustainable living and caring for the environment at its heart.
The Bemz Respect collection is produced using surplus textiles from the fashion industry and manufactured entirely without the use of water or dyes, all in an effort to reduce environmental impact. The manufacturing process used for the Bemz Respect collection recycles waste into beautiful, high-quality textiles without using of a drop of water or dye, thanks to innovative technology and modern design – a real revolution for the home textiles industry.
41 RECYCLED/RECLAIMED
The textiles included in the Bemz Respect collection are manufactured in several stages. Leftover fabrics from the clothing industry are first collected and sorted by colour – grey with grey and white with white. The textiles are shredded and ground back down to their initial cotton fibres, which are then spun into yarn. To ensure a durable and high-quality yarn, the cotton fibres are mixed with a small amount of polyester derived from recycled plastic bottles. Finally, the yarn is woven into a new textile, designed by Bemz. Waste is recycled into beautiful, high-quality textiles without using of a drop of water or dye, thanks to innovative technology and modern design. Half a kilo of waste products are used for every metre of Respect fabric. That’s over 25 tonnes of waste reused, recycled and saved from landfill since Respect was launched. A European pioneer in this sector, Bemz designed this first eco-friendly collection to initially include six new fabrics in two lines of modern design, but has since extended it to include an array of stunning colourways. This break from the traditionally neutral palette of recycled textiles offers the perfect balance of design, quality and sustainability.
Far left: The purpose of the new collection of colours is to show that recycled products can be colourful and trendy Above right: To ensure a durable and highquality yarn, the cotton fibres are mixed with a small amount of polyester derived from recycled plastic bottles Left: Dyeing textiles significantly contributes to the consumption of water and is responsible for adding volatile chemicals that are harmful to our health
“The Bemz Respect collection satisfied the unmet demand for sustainable furniture covers in the market when it was first launched in February 2015, and is one of the anchor collections at Bemz today. Respect offers a fabric combining high-quality, beautiful design and sustainable production and customers love the special texture. The purpose of the new collection of colours is to show that recycled products can be colourful and trendy,” says Lesley Pennington, Bemz Founder and CEO. Muted pastels in rose, green and blue join vibrant accented hues in navy, red and ivy to bring some of this year’s hottest interior trend colours to the collection. INEX-ONLINE.COM

“Bemz instigated this move toward coloured recycled fabrics. Working in close collaboration with the textile manufacturer, we developed these new fashion-savvy shades to complement the existing earthy, neutral tones, offering more options for a sustainable yet stunningly modern home,” says Lisbeth Toivonen, Production Manager at Bemz. The Bemz commitment to the environment runs deep, with a business concept based on extending the life of IKEA furniture. Bemz slipcovers have in essence ‘saved’ over one hundred thousand sofas over the past decade. But it does not stop there; the Bemz business model limits waste and strain on resources by only producing what customers have ordered and all product manufacturing takes place in its biggest market, Europe, keeping shipping distances short. bemz.com « Above: Half a kilo of waste products are used for every metre of Respect fabric Left: The Bemz Respect collection is produced using surplus textiles from the fashion industry

T
his was achieved by using modern insulation techniques including an advanced secondary glazing system from Selectaglaze that markedly improves the performance of the traditional, single-glazed sash windows. The client wished for a home that used as little energy as possible and offered the most comfortable environment. Robert Prewett of Prewett Bizley Architects took on the challenge of convincing conservation officers that a Grade II Listed building could be fitted with energy-saving measures whilst respecting all the historic features. The large, single-glazed sash windows were a particular challenge as they represented a significant proportion of the wall area and could not be replaced. With the high levels of insulation that were required, along with the need to keep the shutters working in some of the rooms, a bespoke solution was needed. Robert approached Selectaglaze which was both developing a new sash window design and trialling Pilkington’s Spacia thin vacuum units, which have a centre pane U-value of 1.0. The resulting Series 25 window proved perfect for the project as it offered high sealing efficiency, a very low U-value and a discreet frame with a specially developed slide catch that allowed shutters to fully close. The house now has airtightness close to one air change per hour at test pressure which demonstrates that the secondary glazing is performing very well. selectaglaze.co.uk « 01727 837271 « enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk « INEX-ONLINE.COM
