Japanese-inspired living Art Buro, a bespoke interior design company, is releasing its new project – Notting Hill Mezzanine. The concept has been designed for a young couple, both working in the creative industries, who have recently purchased a mezzanine apartment in the renowned Notting Hill London spot.
INEX-ONLINE.COM
B
oasting its prime location, the property’s living area occupies 33m², while the mezzanine floor is only 12m². The main idea of the project was to create a multifunctional space influenced by the Japanese style of living combined with London objectives. “We intended to make all private zones invisible and add some luxury accents as well as art and contemporary features representing the best feeling of urban life,” commented Art Buro’s Founder, Ivan Gorozhankin. Japanese philosophy applied to interior design builds upon balance, love for natural beauty and order, which is not necessarily a synonym to minimalism. While hiding the ‘practical’ counterpart of everyday life, the concept highlights the aesthetics of it. A wooden wall is in fact an entrance to the bathroom and the wardrobe; white stairs also feature some storage space and dining area units contain a self-contained kitchenette. The key furniture pieces of the interior were provided by WRKBNCH, a London-based joinery team. Multifunctional boxes designed for limited spaces feature: a kitchenette from the BOX*K collection (a unit with drawers, shelves, a microwave and a fridge) together with a black unit to install a sink, dishwasher, drawers and a hob, alongside a coffee table from the OWL collection, with a folding top to place a laptop, and a dressing table from the BOX*C collection. The same cabinet could be used as a home office or a TV unit. Switching from one to another only requires a replacement of its internal part. Commenting on the project, Ivan Gorozhankin explains: “Sylvia, one of the designers for the project, had fallen in love with Japan a long time ago and the way she finds

connections between modern needs and the Japanese philosophy of living is something incredible.” The main reason for implementing the Japanese style was the size of the space. As it is quite reasonable, Art Buro still wanted to archive the different spaces inside the apartment. “Simplicity was the main request from the client and following it, we decided to use one material in the entrance hall to create a cosy and warm feeling,” commented Ivan. “The bathroom doors and wardrobe doors are covered with wood, as well as architraves – which helped us to create a type of a background wall, so when you are sitting in the living room and looking towards the kitchen, you don’t have a feeling that the kitchen and dining area is located in the hall. “The kitchenette, supplied by WRKBNCH, is an amazing solution for smart spaces and we managed to ideally match the wood finishes,” continued Ivan. As for the living room, Art Buro wanted to make it optically bigger and brighter and that’s why the company used light greyish/ concrete colours on the floor and walls. “To create a special atmosphere for the couple we decided to use the following instruments: we added black spots – like the kitchen island and wall lamps – and even paintings as a masculine section,” explained Ivan. “And, for a feminine side, we added colours such as a duck egg shelf, a pinky mirror and maple bar and coffee table on a Moooi carpet. “All together it’s working as a complete set, all in harmony,” explained Ivan. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Top: Decorative items Art Buro used in this project, such as the Eero Saarinen dining table and Vitra wire chairs, are the design icons of the project Above: Dining area units contain a self-contained kitchenette Right: The scheme works as a complete set, all in harmony
It was quite important for the clients to have the same concept throughout the whole apartment. So, Art Buro tried not to overload the bedroom with overkill colours or items. “We used geometrical patterns, mixing the carpet and pouf to achieve a more vibrant and easy feeling,” commented Ivan. To extend the size of the room visually, Art Buro used a round mirror and installed it close to the staircase, so the clients can see a reflection of the window from the bed – this reflection makes the mirror look like a window itself. To keep some privacy in the bedroom, Art Buro included a separate wall which included small gaps, so depending on the angle, the clients can either see through or just see the plain wall. Once again, Art Buro used the same type of wood and vertical wooden beams in the bedroom wall, thus increasing the size of the room especially from the living room’s view. Inside the bedroom, Art Buro used an opposite effect by asking WRKBNCH to manufacture the bespoke bedside tables with the same wooden structure, but with a horizontal pattern to make the room optically look lower and wider. One wall is used as a gallery for the pictures from the client’s collection and managed to fit in between the dressing table. “It’s another amazing
creation from WRKBNCH’s team as they designed the box in a way that it can be easily converted into a home office or a TV unit just by replacing some internal parts,” explained Ivan. Decorative items Art Buro used in this project, such as the Vitra stool, Isamu Noguchi floor lamp, the Butterfly chair by Knoll, the Eero Saarinen dining table and Vitra wire chairs, are the design icons of the project and complete the overall composition. Ivan comments: “The most luxurious items appear to be the Italian Stilnovo design chandelier, the bespoke mirror and the fireplace. As a common practice in London’s interior design, period features are often left untouched and blend into current refurbishments. In this case, Art Buro decided to follow the tradition, but make it in a modern aesthetic, thus making the fireplace the cosy centre of the apartment. Art Buro faced a few obstacles during the mezzanine’s design and installation process including planning permission – which the company had to wait for a while to receive approval from the council. “With the high prices in modern cities like London, New York and Paris, having a huge apartment is a luxurious privilege. So, we were very happy to use our knowledge and make this place really smart and full of light,” concluded Ivan. artburo.co.uk «

otel Vincci Centrum is an eight-storey hotel, housing 87 rooms, placed in a historical building dating back to 1920 and is protected as a National Heritage site. The hotel has recently been completely renovated, with its inspiration owed to the glamour of the 1950s with natural elements from Scandinavian design used throughout the hotel’s newlyrefurbished design. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Located in the centre of Madrid, Gran Via, the ornate, upscale shopping street in Madrid, the hotel finds itself in the cultural triangle formed by the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia museums. Interior Designer Beatriz Silveira is responsible for the redesign of the newly-refurnished Hotel Vincci Centrum. Beatriz Silveira was inspired by the glamour found throughout the years in the 1950s and today’s soughtafter Scandinavian design.
1950s inspiration, these vintage, retro suspension fixtures elegantly hang above diners providing multiple statement pieces to the Bellini food&bar eatery
The white and neutral colours, evident from Beatriz’s Scandinavian inspiration, invade the walls, floors and lounge ceiling, as well as all of the public areas, of the hotel, bringing a greater sense of space to the redesigned hotel. Beatriz used noble materials, such as aristea marble, to evoke a luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere within Hotel Vincci Centrum, alongside natural oak to contrast with the bronze work found throughout her scheme. Beatriz Silveira wanted to give her own personality to this four-star hotel, part of the Vincci Hotels chain, by using materials and brands that combined design, quality and originality. For this project, Beatriz was looking for an equilibrated contrast and harmony between colours, materials and patterns. The choice fell over those that would enhance the light of the space, create warmth and a sense of cosiness for Hotel Vincci Centrum’s guests.

Beatriz has confessed to have some favourite statement pieces that she included for Hotel Vincci Centrum’s project, such as the impressive wine cellar that gains prominence and was designed on a bespoke basis by Beatriz for Hotel Vincci Centrum. The Beetle chairs and stools by Gubi, she believes, are a perfect mix between Italian and Danish design in laminated moulded veneer which Beatriz used in Hotel Vincci Centrum’s Bellini food&bar. To accompany these Italain/Danish designs in Hotel Vincci Centrum’s Bellini food&bar, Beatriz specified
lighting supplier DelightFULL’s Hanna Suspension Lamps to hang above diners’ tables. Fitting in with Beatriz’s 1950s inspiration, these vintage, retro suspension fixtures elegantly hang above diners providing multiple statement pieces to the Bellini food&bar eatery, while illuminating a classical ambiance. Each Hanna Suspension Lamp is composed by five black and cooper lampshade clusters, made in aluminium and brass by DelightFULL’s artisans who each apply delicately an ancient technique named hand metal spinning to produce these exquisite designs.
DelightFULL’s Hanna Suspension Lamps complement another bespoke design Beatriz created for Hotel Vincci Centrum’s project, Beatriz’s Lámpara Turquesa – The Turquoise Crystal Chandelier. Commenting on her project for Hotel Vincci Centrum, Beatriz said: “Aesthetics and functionality are not incompatible, a space can transmit strength and personality while providing harmony and warmth. The key is balance and the selection of each piece.” delightfull.eu « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Pushing the boundaries Anouska Lancaster, Founder of interior design firm Noushka Design, originally trained and qualified to be an artist. Ever since she was a child, drawing and painting was where her passion fell; she would eat, sleep, paint and repeat. Her career as an interior designer came about after she had a family, where she began to design her husband’s nightclub schemes. Following nominations and prestigious awards, her business built from there.
A
nouska Lancaster knew she’d always use her artistic flair in her career. “It’s what drives me,” explains Anouska. “I originally wanted to be an illustrator. I loved drawing; particularly cartoons, but I pushed my ambitions to one side when I got married and started a family.” Interior design was a natural progression for Anouska. “It went hand in hand with my lifestyle at the time, and allowed me to reignite my passion for art and design.” Here, Anouska talks to Inex about her passion for interior design and what inspires her designs.
Above: Anouska believes that the key element to successful interior design is surrounding yourself with colours and items that make you
Who has been the biggest influence throughout your career? I have always been very sure of my own unique style, be it how I dress myself or how I dress a room. I am not one for following trends or being influenced by the masses. If I had been; then I would not be where I am today. Someone I look up to and admire in my industry is Kit Kemp. I looked to her and her work when people questioned my judgement, or naysayers tried to influence my decisions. Kit Kemp has a very strong sense of style and lives by the same ethos as me, in that ‘there are no rules in interior design’. If I am ever doubtful, then I’ll read her books and reassure myself that I am right to trust my instincts. INEX-ONLINE.COM
happy Right: Anouska Lancaster is the Founder of interior design firm Noushka Design
What is your most notable project to date? I would say that my most notable project to date would be for a boutique nightclub that I designed in Soho, London, called ‘Green Carnation’. It won the award for ‘Best London Night Club’ at the London Bar and Club Awards. It was this design that really put me on the map.
15 INSIGHT
What advice would you give newly-qualified interior designers? I would say to leave behind a lot of what you are taught in the classroom and follow your instinct. From experience, when mentoring with newly-qualified interior designers, they are too wrapped up in the text books and what they’ve been taught. I think that to be a ground-breaking, successful interior designer, the vision has to come from within. You have to have passion and natural artistic flair; it is not something that can be taught. How important do you think sustainability in design is? It’s hugely important and I am always conscious of incorporating this into my designs wherever possible. I am very ‘old school’ in my approach to interior design. I am not a fan of the ‘flat-packed culture’, whereby furniture is produced and sold cheaply on mass, to be replaced a year later. It is not environmentally-friendly, nor is it possible to create a visually pleasing or quality design scheme. I am a huge fan of antique furniture and I am an ambassador for ‘luxecycling’. This is the process of taking preloved and unwanted furniture and reinventing it; giving it an entirely new lease of life. Do you have a design style? I do have a design style that is unique to me. If I had to describe it; I would say that it’s creating a brave, bold room that is a visionary feast for the eyes, which reflects
the individual’s unique style and personality. My goal is always to design a space that is exciting, enticing and that has huge impact. Most importantly, every room I design must tell a story.
Top: Anouska’s favourite colour combination is mixing bright colours with black and white for the ultimate ‘wow
Do you have a preferred colour palette to work with? The colour palette will vary from client to client, because naturally every individual is instinctively drawn to different colours. It is hugely important to me that my clients get a sense of joy and calm from the colours they are surrounded with. Everyone is different, so choosing the correct colour palette is vital to creating a bespoke design scheme for each individual. Personally, I will always choose bright colours. My favourite colour combination is mixing bright colours with black and white for the ultimate ‘wow factor’. It is the surest way of making an unforgettable statement.

16 INSIGHT
What would you class as an ‘inspiring’ interior design scheme? To me, an inspiring design scheme is one that successfully breaks the rules and one that is unforgettable. What is the source of inspiration for your designs? I am always thirsty for inspiration and absorb it wherever I go. I am very inspired by art and will often visit art galleries and exhibitions. I am always intrigued to witness new techniques and colour combinations. Artists are great risk-takers and I find this courage through experimentation utterly awe-inspiring. Do you believe there is a strong link between fashion and the interior world? There is undoubtedly a strong link between the two. If you follow both, as I do, you will soon draw strong and numerous comparisons between the two; season-to-season. This has become even more prominent with fashion designers such as Matthew Williamson doing interior design collections for fabric houses. Can you describe a typical Noushka Design client? I actually can’t! The beauty of what I do is the array of different people I am privileged enough to work with. I have designed for all sorts of people, from DJs to doctors and from bachelors to families of six. The variation is what makes my job so exciting.
How do you encourage your clients to think outside the box? I believe that to create a successful interior it needs to be a true reflection of the client’s unique style and personality, whilst showcasing their passions and lifestyle. To achieve this, you have to think outside the box; otherwise your interior will simply look like one from a catalogue. It can take time for a client to understand the process, but this comes from building trust and spending time working together. INEX-ONLINE.COM
Above: Anouska is not one for following trends or being influenced by the masses
What trends are you currently witnessing among your clients? I encourage my clients to ignore the trends. Trends come and go. Whilst they may seem fun at the time, they soon disappear resulting in a scheme looking dated within six to 12 months. I will often use fashion as a parallel. You wouldn’t choose the latest outfit off the catwalk to wear, you’d choose an outfit that suits you and your personal style – interior design is exactly the same.
Is there anyone that you’d like to collaborate with in the future? I would like to collaborate with my favourite Artist Louise Dear. I am a huge fan of her work and have found myself designing rooms around her artwork on many occasions. Her paintings evoke such passion and energy, whilst pushing the boundaries of colour and genre. I have had the privilege of getting to know Louise over the last six months and we are totally on the same page when it comes to art and design. I truly believe that we could do something very exciting together in the future.

What do you believe is the key element to interior design? I believe that the key element to successful interior design is surrounding yourself with colours and items that make you happy. If you don’t, then your house is simply a house, not a home. A home should be a unique sanctuary, a place where you feel content and happy. This can only be achieved by creating a design scheme that reflects you and your style. My top tip would be to dig deep, trust your intuition, follow your heart; and not your head. What can we expect to see from Noushka Design over the next year? There are lots of exciting opportunities on the horizon for Noushka Design. As well as more writing and TV work, I would like to launch my own collection of items for the home. Encapsulating my quirky, unique style with a furniture and accessories range would be incredibly satisfying. I really feel that there is a gap in the market for a brave and bold capsule collection that pushes boundaries and encourages people to be brave and bold enough to think outside the box. noushkadesign.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Make the most of a winter roof terrace Patricia Fox, Founder of award-winning landscape architecture practice, Aralia, talks Inex through which elements to consider to make the most of a winter roof terrace.
W
ith outdoor space a real premium in cities and urban settings, roof terraces have seen a massive boom in popularity, becoming one of the largest gardening trends of 2016. Whilst it’s known roof terraces are perfect for summer, they can also provide ideal entertaining and relaxing spaces in the winter months. To make the most of a roof terrace, it is essential to create an outdoor space that is INEX-ONLINE.COM
accommodating even in the colder winter weather. Incorporating a fireplace or gas fire table will create warmth on a terrace, allowing clients to still enjoy a roof terrace and rooftop views, even on colder evenings. Steer clear from bioethanol items (they just don’t give out enough heat), instead select gas or wood-fired items, such as the bespoke outdoor fireplace used in our Essex Country Estate project; this will ensure your fireplace produces enough heat for your clients to be able to relax comfortably outside. Adding a fireplace doubles as a great design detail, as it will create a focal point for the roof terrace, even in the warmer seasons. Another way to generate heat on your roof terrace is through wall-mounted infrared heaters. If your client is looking for a unique warming idea, consider adding a
BBQ to their terrace, or a Green Egg. Not only great for summer, a BBQ will offer a reason for your clients to brave the cold, and maybe even mix things up with a Christmas BBQ – the Green Egg is perfect for cooking a Christmas turkey and other Sunday roasts.

For your clients to enjoy their fireplace, as well as their rooftop garden, it is essential that you incorporate seating that will not only provide comfort, but will be able to withstand the winter weather conditions. We’d recommend the latest rattans, which we featured in our 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden, ‘Rooftop Workplace of Tomorrow’. These rattans are perfect for all seasons, as they’re both rain and UV-proof. Outdoor furniture is important for a roof terrace, as it can be used to create an architectural focus within your clients’ gardens during autumn and winter, as well as summer. Selecting bold, architectural pieces will do this well. Remember though to remind clients to take any cushions inside over winter when not in use, in order to avoid any damage and stop them from blowing away. By introducing dynamic shapes through furniture, the roof terrace will remain aesthetically pleasing all year round. Consider introducing

shape and texture through manmade elements, such as timber or stone, like the cocktail bar island we featured in our Ganton Street Roof Terrace design. Lighting the
space can subtly enhance key features as well as allowing your clients to make use of their garden in darker months. For those preferring not to brave the winter weather, introducing lighting in their roof terrace provides your clients with great views from inside their property.

Man-made elements, such as powder-coated metal and stained glass, can also be used in order to introduce colour within a roof terrace garden. Shy away from dark materials and colours if your client’s roof terrace is in a dark space, instead opt for lighter colours that will create a more spacious feel – incorporating a smoked mirror will also help to reflect light in confined spaces and generally make the space appear bigger. Planting evergreen hedging – such as box (buxus sempervirens), yew (taxus baccata) or Portuguese laurel (prunus Iustitanica) – can
be used to provide great all year structure, but plant them in good time before the harsh winter weather hits. Similarly, there are plenty of evergreen ferns which look great over winter, provided they’re in a more sheltered and partially shaded spot. If space is limited, look at installing a green wall, which can act as pieces of artwork, tapestries of foliage and provide a dramatic focal point for views from inside. For a very low maintenance option, use grasses and perennials which peak in late summer. Your clients can leave these plants uncut all winter and allow frost and snow to cover them, offering a different dimension and aesthetic. It’s advisable to carry out any pruning and shaping on any plants before winter hits – pruning over winter, particularly on tender shrubs and evergreen hedges, is not advisable. aralia.org.uk «

Collaboration enhances contemporary signature High-end hand-woven rug manufacturer La Manufacture Cogolin has collaborated with Architect Laurent Buttazzoni to present three graphic and playful rugs, Syracuse, Modica and Noto.
T
he French Cogolin rug factory was purchased by Textile Engineer Jean Lauer in 1928, just a stone’s throw away from Saint-Tropez. Immediately, Lauer set about transforming his new acquisition from a factory specialising in silkworm culture and hand-knotted rugs into a workshop for innovation. He installed 19th century mechanical jacquard looms and imported a host of new techniques for knotting and weaving. These advances enabled the factory to produce a wider variety of rugs and led to Cogolin’s increasingly widespread recognition throughout the 1930s as a leading creator of bespoke products.

Cogolin’s creations would soon be found gracing some of the world’s most prestigious interiors, from Versailles, to the Élysée, to the most luxurious French ocean liners. This acclaim also led to collaborations with some of the most celebrated artists and decorators across Europe, such as Jules Leleu, Jean-Michel Franck, Christian Bérard, Sir David Hicks and Jean Cocteau. The models created in partnership with these legendary figures continue to line the La Manufacture Cogolin archives today as a testament to its place in contemporary carpet history. As the decade of its centenary approached, La Manufacture Cogolin experienced a rebirth in 2010 when it joined the house of

Tai Ping, a group of several of the world’s leading carpet brands, bound together by a shared philosophy, artisanal expertise and commitment to excellence. French revival The organisation has been restructured, the looms restored, the buildings renovated, the colour palette reworked and new materials have been introduced, enabling the workshop to create brand new collections with a more contemporary signature. Simultaneously, Cogolin’s time-honoured technique of hand-knotting continues to live on in its Cogolin et les Mains du Monde (Cogolin and the Hands of the World) line, which utilises the expertise perfected by Cogolin over the past century to bring archival designs back to life. For its latest collection, La Manufacture Cogolin has collaborated with French Architect Laurent Buttazzoni. Laurent Buttazzoni graduated from ESAG Penninghen Paris in 1985. He collaborated side by side with Andrée Putman for seven years before starting Buttazzoni Agence in 1995. 10 years later, the agency became Buttazzoni & Associés. Parisian at heart, Laurent Buttazzoni lives and works in the heart of the capital with an office on Rue de Rivoli. Buttazzoni approaches interior architecture with the intention of creating a living, breathing space; a poetic space and a space to grow. What he prefers above all on his projects is material, volume and light. His projects are varied and always unique – the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Pantin in an old reconverted warehouse, a farm in Normandy, offices with
a glass roof and Hotel Particulier in the middle of Paris. Buttazzoni brings French rigor and a contemporary elegance to each project with a precise eye, a sure taste and a sense of constraint with a deep sense of culture. Working together, the three variations that have emerged from Laurent Buttazzoni and La Manufacture Cogolin’s collaboration – Syracuse, Modica and Noto – were represented at La Manufacture Cogolin’s Paris-based showroom in June. Italian influence Woven on La Manufacture Cogolin’s Var-based artisan’s 19th century jacquard looms, the rugs owe their Mediterranean-sounding monikers to Laurent Buttazzoni’s Italian residence. In this design haven, a traditional Cogolin rug perfectly offsets the restored antique tile floor of the master bedroom. It is to the artisans of the Orient, however, particularly Morocco, that Laurent Buttazzoni looked for inspiration. Featuring a latticework
pattern inspired by Beni Ourain rugs, the resulting design is graphic and playful with a series of ethnic characters playfully twisted and revisited by the Parisian designer through the prism of Cogolin’s technical expertise. “Laurent is a talented designer who understands our tradition for craftsmanship and whose authentic approach matches the values of the manufacture,” says Sarah Henry, Managing Director at La Manufacture Cogolin. Using the same base design, Syracuse, Modica and Noto each assert their difference through signature techniques of manufacturing, such as high-relief patterns and plays on loops and fibres, thus interpreting motifs from other cultures while staying true to La Manufacture Cogolin’s house style. These three variations on a theme, each harnessing different techniques by the manufacturing, was presented in an equally on-trend, colourful installation at La Manufacture Cogolin’s showroom in June. manufacturecogolin.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

ince 2001, Donna Hall, Principal of Donna Mondi Interior Design, has been successfully creating interiors with a delicate fusion of European classicism and American modernism. In her most recent Chicago project, Donna’s inspiration is the sultry charm of the roaring twenties in Chicago, taking advantage of the unique architecture of the space. “The overall inspiration came from the era of the 1920s in Chicago,” commented Donna. “I always take cues from the architecture of a space and then twist it in a modern way.”

Donna’s interiors are composed of bold elements layered with textures and patterns, but with a cohesive feeling that runs throughout the design. One of her noted design signatures is to play with the ceiling design or the ‘fifth wall’, as seen in the dining room of this project. Donna covered the ceiling in an ethereal Maya Romanoff wallcovering while painting the surrounding walls in a glossy black lacquer to reflect light throughout the oval-shaped room. The split living room also features a dynamic plaster ceiling, added to complement and downplay the striking portrait that immediately grabs your attention.

To add some symmetry and balance to this playful space, Donna created matching scenes on either side of the fireplace featuring two custom KOKET Divine armoires. The iridescent peacock feather armoires were custom-made into chests, then Donna topped them with hung Art Deco mirrors, to adorn either side of the fireplace for luxurious his and hers spaces. “I like to infuse interiors with elements from different periods and styles to create timeless, unpredictable surroundings,” comments Donna. “By merging traditional and contemporary styles, the end result is interiors with layered textures, avant-garde elements and cutting-edge styling.” The Divine armoire is a brand favourite, not just for its exotic and appealing design, but for the

The best of Japan in Spain The oldest Japanese restaurant to inhabit Barcelona has benefited from a sleek, modern update to enhance its central position within the centre of the city. Formica Group has played a central role in this Japanese themed interior refurbishment which has been transformed with the company’s decorative high pressure laminate, Terril.
F
ormica Group, an iconic brand intrinsically linked with the material high pressure laminate (HPL), has evolved from a small business, making insulation rings and radio parts, to a worldwide company leading innovation for decorative laminate surfacing products. High pressure laminate was invented in 1913 by two electrical engineers, Herbert A Faber and Daniel J O’Conor, who were searching for a substitute for an insulation material – ‘mica’. In 1927, the company began lithographing decorative images onto the sheets of laminate, introducing a new product, and one that would change the future of the company. By the 1930s, world-renowned artists and architects also began to recognise the design potential of the material, specifying it for modernist and Art Deco interiors.

In the aftermath of the second world war, the baby boom in the USA and the rebuilding in Europe, as well as rising social expectations, created a need for modern, cost-effective interior design materials. Formica products first entered the European market in 1946. Easy to work with, Formica laminate with its colour, patterns and physical properties signalled all things modern and also referenced the popular cultural influences coming from the USA. When it came to Europe in the swinging 60s, Formica laminate became a symbol of modern lifestyles and the company began to build a worldwide presence. Formica also continued to emphasise on design, establishing the Design Advisory Board and organising ‘Surface and Ornament’, an exhibition of ColorCore laminate artwork that debuted at the Art Institute of Chicago. Today, Formica Group has a network of more than 10 worldwide manufacturing facilities. With a history of product innovation in both technology and design, the company stays on top of design trends through regular communication with design leaders and consumers. The latest project to make use of Formica Group’s high pressure laminate is KOBFUJI Architects’ project for Barcelona’s Tokyo Sushi restaurant. Tokyo Sushi is the
oldest Japanese restaurant located in Barcelona, Spain. When the restaurant sought to update its interior design, the decision was made to combine traditional Japanese style with a modern vanguard. The architects wanted to create an elegant atmosphere and design an environment that would leave a lasting impression on the diners. The use of Formica’s laminate has emphasised the desired impression and shapes the look of the restaurant. KOBFUJI Architects specified Formica’s Terril high pressure laminate with a matt 58 finish to support the expression of the Japanese-style space. INEX-ONLINE.COM

KOBFUJI Architects clad Terril along the 10m long wall behind Tokyo Sushi’s sushi bar. Creating an interpretation of the classic kimono stripe pattern of the Edo era, and capturing the Japanese heritage integral to the restaurant’s identity, KOBFUJI Architects adopted the kimono pattern to combine traditional Japanese elements with a modern design for a restaurant situated in Barcelona. In the words of the architects, one of the main challenges of this project was to “rediscover a new expression of materials and change the characteristics of the space through a simple arrangement”. Commenting on the project, a spokesperson for KOBFUJI Architects said: “The decor is almost as important as the food itself, as it is a reflection of the restaurant’s essence. For example, to visually portray the concept of fusion with the kitchen, linking traditional and contemporary flavours, special designs were required to offer a visually inventive fusion of traditional elements and new technologies.” INEX-ONLINE.COM
Formica laminate was also used previously by KOBFUJI Architects in the design of Futami, another Japanese restaurant in Barcelona. Ideal for the hospitality environment, Formica laminate offers on-trend designs and practical features such as durability, hygienic properties and ease of maintenance. Using a total of 28m² for the installation, Terril was ideal
to meet the architects’ design vision of a calm atmosphere with Japanese sober tones, while offering a colour that stands out in contrast to the light. something you would usually expect from a towel rail or an essential, but it’s those extra special features that make all of the difference. Some Aestus products can now be supplied with a remote control, proving that innovative developments can also be highly practical and result in real-life style improvements. If a designer is looking to create a stunning visual statement, one way could be to consider using a colour on a traditional design? For example, a traditional column radiator in a bold red or green finish can rarely be ignored. One should always consider valve options when choosing a radiator too, as these can make a significant impact. For example a ‘dual fuel’ valve will allow an electric element to be added to a towel rail discretely and efficiently. Before choosing a radiator that’s right for your client or project, you will need to assess the heat requirement of the room that it’s planned for. For assistance, check out our website for a BTU calculator on www.aestus. co.uk/btu-calculator. It’s extremely important to choose the right company when selecting a radiator, as the cheapest is rarely the best option. You need to select a reputable company whose products will give you the confidence to be able to supply the level of after-sales service your clients demand, and deserve. At Aestus, we offer a fully bespoke service, so most of our radiators can be offered in a huge range of RAL colours and finishes to complement any room design or decor. We are always available to discuss any heating requirement for specifiers and designers. aestus.co.uk «
Turn up the heat When choosing a heating solution there are many aspects to consider including material, size, cost, design and functionality; there are also other features and benefits as radiators and towel rails have become more sophisticated. Here, Steve Birch, Sales Director at Aestus, explains the latest trends on the market.

point. We are also seeing influences from Europe and Scandinavia in our products, which demonstrate that British designers and customers are at the forefront when it comes to design development. Design for smaller rooms is a big consideration in the UK and subsequently, multifunctional radiators are becoming increasingly popular. For example, it’s now possible to incorporate a full-length mirror into a towel rail to provide an authentic spa ambiance to a room. It’s not

n late 2008, Ropemaker was named as the Estates Gazette Green Awards’ ‘Office Development of the Year’. Reinforcing Arup’s green credentials, the client travelled to a specialist supplier in Bavaria to hand-pick an unusual crown-cut smoked Swiss pear veneer from FSC-certified stock. This stunning veneer was used in the manufacture of the doors on all 20 floors. Each door being of a bespoke size meant they fell outside standard fire ratings, Graefe applied for, and achieved, a specific fire rating from an authorised fire consultant. A spectacular design was accomplished in the reception area with randomly matched planks of an extremely rare FSC-certified log of European walnut. Graefe also supplied factory painted riser doors on the project – providing a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution to the client. A
t the heart of Baker & Gray is a beautiful embroidered bespoke fabric collection that has been inspired by the flora and fauna of international travels in Europe, India and Africa. We also produce a stunning collection of cushions and have recently added printed fabric and wallpaper to the range. The collection can be ordered through our showroom in Surrey or via a Baker & Gray stockist. We opened our first retail outlet in Warminster in Wiltshire in 2009 and have recently moved into our new home in leafy Surrey, where we have a shop and showroom. We exhibit at the interior design fair,

Decorex, in London and also showcase in design-based fairs nationwide. Texture and colour are the two most important elements that inspire my work. I have always loved embroidery and its story has its roots in many parts of the
world. All have their unique tales to tell, with inspiration for patterns having been taken from plants and animals with geometric and religious influence. Embellishment of one’s surroundings – home, workplace, buildings of worship – have all been great examples of this type of design, much of it influenced by nature or our concept of it. These early textiles have stood the test of time in style, colour and decorative appeal, influencing interior and fashion designers constantly. From my perspective, in both fashion and interior design, the use of flora and fauna is becoming ever popular. With our need to look after the precious world we live in, through design we can highlight a fragile and potentially disappearing environment. Flowers, trees, animals, beetles and bugs are all in danger of quietly becoming extinct; for example, beautiful seedpods, beetles and fruit found in the African Savannah. Meanwhile, birds, reptiles and mammals are struggling to survive the onslaught of logging in the rainforests of South America. It is inspiring to see the emergence of the natural world in design, focusing our attention on its beauty and wide diversity. The ecological problems, which our world is facing, are of great concern. With the threat of species becoming extinct, our awareness has influenced design through the emergence of strong colours and images of nature filtering into our living spaces. These are challenging times in retail and manufacturing, of that there is no doubt, but there are encouraging ‘green shoots’ on the horizon. Having a unique and beautiful product is important, and good customer service has always been an important part of our ethos, together with attention to detail. Baker & Gray strives to provide longevity in its products: their quality and appeal are such that their owners will be reluctant to replace them. bakergray.com « sarah@bakergray.com « 01483 272668 « INEX-ONLINE.COM
