Students are now benefitting from a contemporary reception area and brand new meeting spaces, classrooms and a Centre of Excellence. In spring 2015 a £5m refurbishment of the Hagley Road Campus facilities was completed, featuring 130m of Q-railing glass balustrades and staircases. The existing 60-year-old building has undergone a facelift which incorporates a double height atrium reception. Core objectives for the project: To reflect the dynamic, high-tech environment of the college Keep guests safe and secure long-term To be durable enough to withstand an FE education setting Installation that is sympathetic to the building process
The existing 60-year-old building has undergone a facelift which incorporates a double height atrium reception
High-tech environment The project architects required a balustrade and staircase railing that showcased the dynamic, high-tech environment of the college. The sculptured opening to the feature stairs in the atrium provides an interactive space with the flow of suspended acoustic baffles and blade lighting which lead to the main artery route on campus. Q-railing’s Easy Glass range answered their requirement perfectly. The Easy Glass Slim and Easy Glass 3kN frameless glass systems were considered ideal for use on the staircases and balustrades on the upper floors, creating a safety barrier without visual obstruction or compromising on design in any way. Installation included bespoke cladding, which makes the railings appear to rise directly out of the floor or stairs.
the aesthetics. Different systems in the Q-railing product range provide appropriate line load resistance: Easy Glass Slim being used on stairway balustrade and the much stronger Easy Glass 3kN, with 19mm toughened and heat soaked glass where required. The college facility is now equipped to provide students and visitors with stylish and durable accommodation. Q-railing products are made of reliable materials and ensure a long-lasting life. Installation was fast, parts fitted together neatly and products arrived onsite pre-fabricated to a high-quality finish that didn’t require extra labour.

The MCIAT Professional Assessment is a flexible, rigorous, robust and quality assured qualifying process, based on performance and designed to recognise the diversity of Architectural Technology. Candidates must provide an in-depth critical analysis clearly summarising their professional experience. This should be a reflective report and should refer to challenges and successes encountered whilst working on projects and how any issues were resolved. Applicants should also undertake a self-evaluation highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their area(s) of practice. The Professional Assessment process is based on four core competencies: • Designing • Managing • Practising • Developing (self)
Who can apply for the MCIAT Professional Assessment? Any applicant working in or on, for example, academia, general practice, component design, refurbishment, small residential projects, large commercial projects etc within Architectural Technology, should be able to apply their own experience to the Professional Assessment process, but they must hold one of the following membership grades: ACIAT, TCIAT or profile candidate. Each application will be assessed on its merit. However, each applicant will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding and professional competence/experience in relation to their sphere/s of practice and demonstrate to the Institute they can meet the expectations of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT.
How much does it cost? To apply for the Professional Assessment, applicants are required to pay £300 for the assessment of the application and the Professional Assessment Interview.

S
ituated between Ealing High Street and the Ealing Green Conservation Area, this building was a 1980s unused former teaching facility, forming part of the University of West London, has now been transformed into 100 selfcontained studios for students. Barking Shopfronts was able to ensure that this project could be completed within the restraints of the budget. This building conversion was completed using Comar 5P.i Tilt & Turn and fixed light windows, Comar 6EFT curtain walling to the main entrances and stairways, Comar 7P.i doors for the entrances with Comar 9P.i Framing used for the side lights. Comar 6EFT 4sided SG provides a structurally glazed solution with EPDM or Silicon seals, 6EFT offers architects the opportunity to maximise a glazed area as it has the slimmest seals on the market enabling as much natural daylight as
possible into the staircases. In a busy residential and particularly high traffic student environment, Comar 7P.i commercial doorsets are a natural choice. Not only are they available in swing, pivot, sliding, auto-sliding and sliding folding, they have been designed specifically for public applications. All aluminium was powder coated to a Grey RAL 7037 Matt finish. All Comar approved fabricators are required to have the technical expertise to attend pre-site meetings and provide detailing. Barking Shopfronts liaised closely with the specifiers to provide design advice and detailing which ensured the project ran smoothly and met site deadlines.

Doors, Windows & Balustrades Focus
The importance of light and airiness was absolutely vital to the whole design concept
Practical design solution for unique health park Most people have firm ideas of what a hospital is like. But the team designing the new Children’s Hospital at Alder Hey in Liverpool put all pre-conceptions aside to create something genuinely new, radical and patient friendly. Even the name ‘Hospital’ wasn’t good enough. They designed a ‘Health Park’ where the hospital is integrated into its parkland surroundings and the community it serves.
T
he final design, part of a PFI process, came from a consortium of John Laing, Laing O’Rourke, Interserve and BDP Architects although they were inspired by a drawing by 15 year old Eleanor Brogan following one of the NHS’s biggest ever public consultations.
Peter Ward, John Laing’s Director of healthcare projects explained: “We wanted a hospital that felt so different to visiting a ‘normal hospital’, to look like a really exciting building as well as integrating with a park in a way that no other hospital has ever done. The first decision was to put all

the ‘hot’ stuff – accident and emergency, surgery departments and so on – on the lower floors, leading into an atrium that forms the heart of the hospital, which is a big open space, full of visually interesting things for children like a tree-house and beams like the ribs of a dinosaur.” Three quarters of patients will be in single rooms rather than the 18 bed Nightingale wards of the old Alder Hey Hospital and there’s an outdoor balcony overlooking the park on each floor. The importance of light and airiness was absolutely vital to the whole design concept and this meant the doors for each of the patient’s rooms had to be very special. Each had to be large for ease of access for beds and equipment, glazed for brightness and airiness, have privacy blinds for examinations or just occasional solitude, and finally they had to be easily opened and closed – by a child. One or two of these features can be achieved by door suppliers without too many problems but finding a door that met them all was a major project. They also specified that most of the doors would have to be manually operated as automatics would create their own problems of power supplies, battery back-ups, fire alarm linkage and tying in with the Building Management System. Whilst that may be relatively simple for a handful of doors it was prohibitively expensive for over 200 doors of this size and specification and potential issues
Doors, Windows & Balustrades Focus of reliability and maintenance could be anticipated. After an extensive search, only one company came up with an effective, practical solution and that was Axis Automatic Entrance Systems Limited based in Northampton. In fairness, doors up to 1800mm wide and 2700mm high are not that excessive, even for glazed doors. However, the Venetian blinds had to be integrated into the doors for infection control and to avoid expensive cleaning and maintenance. So these were sealed between two panes of glass with magnetic controls to avoid an ‘infection bridge’ into the glazing gap. That just left the problem of opening and closing with some of the doors now weighing up to 160kg each. At this point Axis turned to Accuride International, also based in Northampton, and together they developed the sliding mechanism for what has become the Axis Flo-Motion Door System. Using re-circulating ball guides on a special low resistance linear track, the doors slide so easily that an ingenious damper had to be designed to absorb the energy of the heavy doors so they did not slam into the end of the track. The door sets are fabricated using extruded aluminium profiles and include a self supporting ‘goal post’ frame. Each sliding door is operated with minimal effort using fingertip control on back to back nylon handles. A maximum of 22N had been specified as the opening or closing force required and actual testing of the doors in situ showed them all to be well
The extra-large, easy opening, glazed sliding doors have transformed the way single rooms work
under that figure with an average of less than 10N. An astonishing performance for doors of this size and weight. David Houghton, NHS Health Park Project Manager at Alder Hey said: “The extra-large, easy opening, glazed sliding doors have transformed the way single rooms work to deliver healthcare with a choice of privacy or social interaction when required without the loss of clinical observation.” In recognition of the professional and imaginative response by Axis to the door design brief, main contractor Laing O’Rourke presented Axis Managing Director Rob Brunero with their Northern Innovation Award. Rob said: “I’m really proud of the whole team at Axis not just for the development of these doors but also
the installation programme which went pretty smoothly and finished on time. Our colleagues at Accuride have been excellent too with their expertise in sliding mechanisms and their enthusiasm and willingness to help.” As well as the 200+ manual Flo-Motion doors, Axis also installed 11 large Manusa automatic doors with hermetic seals for infection control. Just as with the manual doors, the design required very large double glazed doors nearly 2.5m high with double glazed units incorporating integral blinds. And to add a further complication the doors need two opening modes. One option is for the doors to open a mere 25% of their potential movement and then close after a time delay of 10 seconds. Alternatively this cycle can be interrupted by a command for the door to open fully. This enables staff to slip in and out of the room without exposing the full open doorway. However, the door can be fully opened when moving beds or equipment and so has the flexibility of a manual door but with full automatic power assistance. A seal housed in an aluminium profile and shaped to suit the floor guides was fitted to the bottom of the doors. In order to create the hermetic seal, as the door closes it drops 10mm and goes in 10mm with the guides assisting with the alignment to form the seal. A perimeter frame with seal was then fitted around the door opening (sides and top) so when the door reaches the fully closed position, it becomes totally sealed.

Using the auto-feed and seamless punching and folding capabilities of the Salvagnini CNC equipment, combined with a fast, heat cured bonding system, ensures improved precision and accuracy, reduces manual handling of products and improves the throughput time of products. The improved process is being used at the Lisburn facility for the production of existing products, but the full impact of the investment will be seen through the launch of a new door design that incorporates a full interlocking seam on all sides of the leaf. For enhanced security and visual impact Kensington & Chelsea windows and doors are internally glazed and are ideal for both new build and heritage refurbishment projects. They are delivered to site with three coats of spray-applied micro-porous paint which is available in white and a choice of fashionable heritage colours. An optional dual-colour facility is also available. “As a responsible manufacturer we are committed to sourcing our raw material sustainably,” continues Wood. “We have worked hard to achieve this certification which is considered to be an environmental gold standard. Undertaking this work in partnership with BM TRADA is also another symbol of quality and assurance for the brand.” Acoustic data for Lomax + Wood windows is also now available as tested by BM TRADA. With the acoustic upgrade option the Kensington & Chelsea traditionally designed timber flush casement achieves a market-leading 42db and the box sash 38db. Lomax + Wood can also offer customers a bespoke test service to help achieve exceptional acoustic targets for made-to-order timber windows and doors.
