Zu dem Job habe ich natürlich ja gesagt, weil alles besser ist als putzen. Wir arbeiteten zuerst in einem Büro, in Dimitris Haus in der Köpenicker Straße und sind dann irgendwann ins Fischbüro gezogen. Im Keller dort fanden die ersten ACID-House-Partys statt.

Geheim natürlich. Und da hab ich dann auch mal an der Bar gearbeitet, weil die Barfrau ausgefallen ist und ich einfach noch da war. Man konnte nichts sehen, es war alles Nebel, es war alles Schlamm, weil es auch geregnet hat – völlig irrsinnig. Und außen stand immer noch Fischbüro dran. Als später die Mauer gefallen ist und die ersten Ostleute rüberschwappten, sind zweimal welche reingekommen und wollten Angeln kaufen. Die dachten, da gibt es Angelzubehör.

Ich habe übrigens bis heute nicht genau herausgefunden, warum Dimitri und Achim ausgerechnet mich angeheuert haben. Dimitri hat später irgendwann mal erzählt, Achim habe nach dem Interview über mich gesagt: „Einsammeln!“

Und dann im Jahre 1989 kamen zum ersten Mal Musiker aus dem elektronischen Bereich dazu, also 808 State und diese andere Truppe, deren Namen ich jetzt vergessen habe. Damals haben sich alle noch darüber aufgeregt, dass man das Atonal jetzt elektronisch mache, aber es war ja schon eigentlich der Anfang eines neuen Sounds und daher auch genau richtig. Dann fiel eine Band aus und stattdessen spielten Final Cut, die auch auf dem Label Interfisch gesignt waren. Und bei Final Cut war Jeff Mills dabei. Die waren jung und unbekannt, Jungs aus Chicago und Detroit, alle so zwischen 19 und 20.

They just needed someone to distribute the album in Europa. So we said:“No Problem!“ The Label and the Distribution already existed. Thereupon we got the royalties for to sell the album in Europe. But the sound was very different to the usual Interfisch-Label stuff which was more Acid and Berlin Elektronica, we had to change the name of the Label to Tresor Records. Now everything was new, new, new. Simply Techno. The X-101 was released in September 1991. Therefore the Club celebrates its birthday always in March and the Label in September.

Then we launched the follow releases X-102, X-103 and the cooperation of Eddie Flash‘n Fowlkes, Blake Baxter, Juan Atkins with 3MB (Thomas Fehlmann) and everything developed.

Und wie machen wir das jetzt mit dem Cover? Ja, das soll dann Abdul malen, okay alles klar.“ So. Und dann haben wir die Fische wieder reingeschmissen.

Worauf es dann ankommen wird, ist die Show. Du kannst Dich dann nicht mehr als Professor hinterm Laptop verstecken und ein paar Knöpfe drücken. Die DJs müssen sich künftig darüber mehr Gedanken machen, sonst hört und sieht alles gleich aus. Ich finde nicht, dass man sich verbiegen muss, aber ein bisschen mehr Kreativität, vor allem bei den Jüngeren, wäre angebracht. Das ist hier immerhin die Entertainmentbranche.

Genauso ist es mit den Platten auch. Man muss, wenn man Tracks macht, mehr als 100 Prozent geben und versuchen, seinen eigenen Stil zu entwickeln. Denn alles andere haben wir schon 150 Mal gehört.

Es ging ja auch und vor allem um laut. Also haben wir dann die Künstler-Alben mit 7-9 Tracks auf zwei Maxis schneiden lassen, damit der Sound auf dem Dancefloor funktioniert. Er ist dann komprimierter, die Rillen sind enger, das verstärkt die Intensität, deswegen ist es lauter.

That was really important. We were the first club which had his own Label nearly in the same time. This resulted in a special snowball effect. The DJs who released on the Label also played frequently in the club and we had a lot of DJs who played in the club and then singed as a producer – right away from the dance floor. And I think we were the first who made double vinyl’s. Before there were just Maxi-Singles and LP’s. But the Longplayer were not good enough for the cutting process for electronic music. The Sound was different, flat, not so intensive, not so loud. And the most important thing was loud. So we cut the Albums with 7 to 9 tracks onto two Maxis, that the Sound worked on the Dance floor.

Aber es war der vollste Abend auf einen Mittwoch, das war schon ziemlich cool irgendwie. Die gingen dann auch wieder um 1 Uhr, und danach war es nur wieder diese kleine Meute von 30/40 Leuten, die immer auf einen Mittwoch da waren. Das war echt die härteste Schule, die man machen konnte: Auf einen Mittwochabend 30 Leute bis morgens 4 oder 5 Uhr am Tanzen zu halten, das hat mir viel gebracht. Da habe ich viel gelernt.

UFO was in a former Penny supermarket in a skyscraper. That´s were I started my first own series. That was always on wednesdays and it was called Cyperspace. I ordered a VHS-Video in the US with fraktal-animations and we projected that at the party. In 89/90 that was the hottest shit in town and the newspaper „taz“ made it a feature named „Dancemusic with fraktals“. By that we had a night there with mathmatic-freaks staring all night long on the visuals, but they couldn´t dance at all.

Die Chefs wollten es eher ein bisschen intelligenter. Aber das ging da unten einfach nicht. Und das sollte auch gar nicht. Der Sound der Stunde war wirklich „auf die Fresse“ und „gib ihm“, und das hat da unten bestens funktioniert.

Ja, gemeinsam mit Tilman Brembs, wir waren die Camouraden. Ich hatte Tilman da unten kennengelernt, wir trugen völlig unabhängig voneinander immer Tarnklamotten und waren auch vom Kopf her genau gleich.

Wir griffen damals stark konzeptionell ein. Wir hatten zum Beispiel die Idee: Wenn schon Stroboskope, dann wenigstens über Kreuz und gegeneinander gesteuert, damit die Leute überhaupt nicht mehr wissen, wo sie sind. Außerdem gab es überall Tilmans Totenköpfe. Wir waren damals Hart²core [t²= Tilman und Tanith], und das war gleichzeitig auch Tresor.

So you also had an impact on the Tresor-Look?

Yes, together with Tilman Brembs we called us the „Camouraden“. I met Tilman down there, we both showed up individually in camou-clothing and were on a same „brainwave“. So we influenced the concept straight on. So e.g. if to use a strobe, then arrange it crosswise and against eachother, so the people don´t know at all where they are. Also Tilmans skulls were everywhere.

What the Detroit guys did was from my point of view very familiar to what we already did here. At that time it was basically sound from Underground Resistance, what we had in our mixes too. So it was a logical step to book them to Tresor. That was a clear statement as it was the sound of the vault.

Und das ist bis heute so. Ich spiele alles von Dubstep bis Techno. Ich möchte nichts ausschließen, sondern suche mir aus dem großen Pool die Sounds aus, die ich mit meiner Linie verbinden kann.

Da kann auch bei Minimal ein Track dabei sein, bei dem ich denke: „Wow, düster.“ Und das passt dann auch gut in ein Techno-Set rein. Ich finde es gut, wie sich in Berlin die Dubstep-Techno-Achse entwickelt hat. Das ist für die Nuller Jahre das, was die Detroit-Berlin-Achse für die 90er war. Während die frühen Underground Resistance-Sachen nur eher soundtrackmäßig waren, wurde das bald viel mehr „auf die Fresse“, und das hatten die von uns. Darauf haben wir die gebracht. Das gleiche passiert jetzt wieder. Dubstep und Techno haben sich langsam angenähert, und es ist etwas Tolles entstanden. Wenn man diese Musik heute hören will, geht man nicht nur nach London, man geht auch nach Berlin. Als ich 2004 auf Dubstep kam, dachten wieder alle, dass sei der Tanith mit seinem Break Beat Kram. Ich wusste jedoch, dass die Leute es diesmal anders kapieren würden. Man konnte raushören, dass da Menschen am Start waren, die auch mal Techno gehört haben. Und dass diese Connection hier in Berlin stattfindet, finde

Ich digitalisiere und benutze das heute wieder. Ich lege nicht mehr mit Platten auf, ich bin voll auf digital. Die Möglichkeiten sind einfach ganz andere. Früher hat man ja von Record Art gesprochen, aber das, was daran Art ist, macht man heute digital. Früher hattest Du einfach zwei Platten, die Du analog abspielen konntest.

Du konntest zwar reinscratchen – das nervt aber nur – und Du konntest Phasing-Effekte damit machen, aber das hat irgendwann der Mixer übernommen. Was Du heute erreichen kannst mit Sample-Decks und Loops setzen und Cue-Points juggeln ist die eigentliche Kunst, und grade Techno eignet sich hervorragend dafür.

Motte wollte das mal, aber ist damit ganz tief gestürzt, und andere haben erst gar nicht versucht, der King of Berlin zu sein, das wäre in so einer großen Stadt mit so unterschiedlichen Ansätzen auch lächerlich gewesen. Irgendwann merkte man aber dann schon, dass eine gewisse Attitüde in die Szene Einzug hielt, als DJs meinten, sie müssten jetzt ihre Macken kultivieren, um als Star gesehen zu werden.

Bei Sven Väth ist das einfach sein Charakter, aber bei anderen war es nur aufgesetzt, und das hat dann schon irgendwann genervt.

So you never had trouble with being a star?

No, when you are part from the beginning on, being a star wasn´t essential. Back then there was no difference of playing on stage or dancing infront of it. It was all one. Also when you were around the whole weekend – first Tresor, then Planet and later on at Walfisch, you had people who liked you for the music you played, but you were nothing special cause you danced later on with the crowd or chilled with friends in a cosy corner.

That was more coming up in Frankfurt with Sven Väth, the hirarchy was coming from there, maybe in a banking city this makes sense, for Berlin it never worked out.

No, here you still can find one red line. I think it´s better to act and think in long terms. Better stay true to your line - also when others can´t see that – instead of jumping from one trend to the other – from Trance to Minimal, from Techno to House or even worse from Schranz to House. That might fit to a money-realtionship, but I couldn´t do that.

I focus on long terms, keeping the line and try different wings of the branches. That´s the major thing for me about Djing.

Don´t be only the crowd-pleaser, better fill in a selectorposition, check whats happening around you, what´s new, what´s inspiring and how can I bundle that in my set to hit it straight in your face. That´s something very important for each artist. This disillutionating-moment when people don´t get it, i see that as an essential point. If you only wanna please you don´t please yourself.

I played down there and it felt like Tresor. Many others were complaining about that this is no more Tresor, but I had the opportunity to judge that from the Djs perspective and I can only say: This is original Tresor for me.

The people like it hard and for myself it was always important that Tresor was the place where people freak out on hard sound which they wouldn´t do somewhere else and also that you still can go on an experimental line, which the audience accepts. That´s coming true down there untill today.

Down there you have a pot where the energy is straight refelcted by its walls. Who comes in here has more to give. From psychologic views that´s already a different way to dance.
