FLYER Irgendwie im Flyerdschungel aufzufallen war auch damals schon sehr schwierig. Das beste Mittel den Tresor unverwechselbar zu kennzeichnen schien mir, das dominant, immer an gleicher Stelle platzierte Kreissymbol zum festen Element f端r alle Serien zu machen.

Nach einiger Zeit wusste jeder, der etwas mit elektronischer Musik am Hut hatte, welcher Fetzen Papier in den Flyerboards vom Tresor kam. Verwundert habe ich irgendwann mal festgestellt, das die Leute die Dinger zu Sammeln anfingen und 端ber E-Bay damit handelten.

Die Formate und Materialien der Flyer variierte ich 端ber die Jahre immer wieder. Die Kennung aber blieb so resistent wie der Tresor selber.

FLYER To stand out from the masses in the flyerjungle was already difficult back in the days.

So the best choice for myself to make Tresor looking unique was to place the circle as a permanent recognizable sign as a fixed element for all series.

So after a while everybody within the electronic musicscene knew which pieces in the flyerboards came from Tresor. I was surprised when I somewhen found out that some passionate collectors were selling the flyers on Ebay. I changed the formats and materials over the years but the signature was kept resistant like Tresor itself.

Da ich keine guten Flurlampen für mein Haus finde, will ich demnächst selber welche entwerfen.

Wer mit Techno groß geworden ist, der kommt auch an Dr. Motte nicht vorbei. Egal ob man seine Musik mag, oder nicht, dieser Mann war prägend für eine junge Musikverliebete Generation und das nicht nur als Mitbegründer der Loveparade.

Seit 26 Jahren ist er an den Plattentellern aktiv und nach wie vor ist er mit Enthusiasmus fest in der Szene verankert.

Wir haben Dr. Motte zum Gespräch eingeladen, um von früher bis heute etwas mehr über sein Schaffen zu erfahren.

Who grew up with Techno, didn´t come around Dr. Motte. Equal if you like his music or not, this guy was forming a musicloving generation - not only by being one of the foundingfathers of Loveparade.

Since 26 years now he is active behind the turntables and still with enthusiasm he is an active part within the scene.

We invited Dr. Motte for a talk about back in the days up to now to find out more about his work in progress.

Nach dem ganzen aufgeflogenen DoktorenSchwindel in der deutschen Politik eine ganz obligatorische Frage - ist dein „Dr.“ Titel echt und wie kam es überhaupt zu dem Namen?

Dr. Motte ist ein Künstlername. deswegen hat und wird er auch nicht in meinem Ausweis stehen. ich habe den Dr. 1991 im 90° Club verliehen bekommen.

After this big doctor-swindle in German politics a very simple question - is your „Dr.“ titel real and how did you come up with this name?

Dr. Motte is an artist name. That´s why you won´t find it in my ID card. I achieved the Dr. title 1991 at 90° Club.

Welches Instrument/ Gerät ist deiner Meinung nach das Prägendste der Techno-Geschichte gewesen?

Die Roland Bassline TB303 ist die bekannteste. sie hat mit Phuture Acidtrack 1987 eine Revolution auf der Tanzfläche ausgelöst.

From your point of view - Which instrument/ machine was the most significant one in the history of Techno?

The bassline of the TB303 is the most known.

This thing started a revolution on the dancefloor with Phuture Acidtrack back in 1987.

2010 hattest du ja Silberhochzeit (25Jahre) mit den Turntables. Sind Plattenspieler/ Vinyl heute noch fester Bestandteil Deiner Sets? ich spiele keine mp3 in Clubs. ich habe immer Platten und CD mit Wavs dabei. ich liebe den analogen elektronischen Sound. digital tötet das. Auf einer Schallplatte findest du echte Schwingungen. An alle. Kauft Vinyl.

Ja, natürlich war schon eine Menge Musik da.

Ich entdecke aber jeden Tag neue interessante elektronische Musik. z.b. neue Musik von Brian Eno auf Warp Records.

In 2010 you had silver-wedding (25 years) on the turntables. Are turntables/ vinyl still part of your sets today?

I guess it´s not that easy to create new music that realy sounds „new“ after being 26 years in the clubworld, stuff that doesn´t make you feel bored as you might have heard it already in track Xy. How´s that for you?

I never play mp3s in the clubs. I always have vinyl and CDs with wavs with me. I love the electronic analogue sound. Digital kills that. On a record you find real vibrations. To all. Buy vinyl.

Sure, there already was endless music on the market. But still today I find new interesting electronic music day by day e.g. new music by Brian Eno on warp records.

Ich stelle mir vor, das es nach 26 Jahren im Clubgeschehen gar nicht so einfach ist, neue Musik zu erschaffen, die „neu“ klingt - sprich einen nicht selbst schon langweilt, da schon mal gehört im Track von XY. Wie siehst Du das?

Wann hast Du das erste Mal im Tresor gespielt - war das ein besonderes Erlebnis für Dich?

Ich habe ja 1998 im ersten und zweiten UFO gespielt. Der Tresor war dann auch mein drittes Zuhause. Wann das war, hm, keine ahnung.

Das war wohl 1991? Regina oder Dimitri sollten das wissen. Ich hab den Tresor unten geliebt!

Eigentlich war das auf den Punkt gebracht, was den Sound of Berlin ausmachte. Die Ästhetik der elektronischen Musik in Symbiose mit dem

Rost und Dreck der verlassenen Räume und keller. das war sehr spannend.

When was your first time playing at Tresor and was it a special thing for you?

In the end of the 80´s I played in the first and the second UFO. Tresor became my third homebase. When that was exactly - I don´t have a clue.

It might be in 1991? Regina or Dimitri should know that. I loved the Tresor downstairs! it was simply the essence of what defined the sound of Berlin. The aesthetics of electronic music in symbiosis with the rust and dirt of the abandoned spaces and the vault.

That was electrifying.

Ich hab Dich beim letzten Octave One LiveSet in der ersten Reihe entdeckt. Gehst Du zu solchen Events einfach nur, um zu feiern, oder um zu sehen/ hören, was andere Künstler aktuell machen?

Octave One sind Helden. Darum war ich da. ich liebe die musikalische Experience. die Jungs haben mich mit ihren Sound mitgerissen und gemeinsam haben wir gut gerockt, grinz.

I´ve seen you in the first row at the last Octave One liveset. Are you going out just to party or do you want to know more about what other artists are up to right now?

Octave One are heroes. That´s why I was there.

I love that music experience. They blew me away with their sound and we definitive rocked, grinz.

Welche drei Tips würdest Du jemandem geben, der mit elektronischer Musik zukünftig Erfolg haben will?

What are the three things you would give on the way for someone who wants to have success in the fields of electronic music?

lerne ein instrument. finde heraus welches instrument dich anspricht. lerne musik und deine beziehung dazu zu verstehen. besorge dir freeware oder open source zum musik machen im internet. du kannst sofort mit dem musikmachen beginnen. oft gibt es auch abgespeckte kleine versionen von großen software programmen. oder du kaufst dir grauchte hardware maschinen und machst alles von hand. damit kommst du oft schneller zu ergebnis. wenn du ideen hast, kannst du dich in den clubs auch

Learn an instrument. Check out which instrument talks to you. Learn about music and learn to understand your relation to it. Get some freeware or open source stuff from the web to produce music. you can start straight ahead with making music.

Often you find small lite versions of the expensive softwares for free. Or you go and buy used equipment machines and make everything by hand. This often comes much quicker to results.

We love electronic music. It´s the praxxiz of the doctor. here, everyone can come home. You don´t need a sickness certificate as we want to experiment in our laboratory and define new ways in music...

Welche Musikrichtung schlägst Du mit PRAXXIZ ein und wer veröffentlicht dort?

Wir lieben elektronische musik in seiner Gesammtheit. Wir sind dogmafrei und fair. Natürlich werde auch ich dort meine Musik veröffentlichen. Which music direction do you focus on PRAXXIZ and who´s releasing on it?

We love all kinds of electronic music. we´re free of dogmas and fair. Sure I will release also my music there, demos you have to bring around at Kastanienallee or send it to promo@drmotte. de senden. In general we make the vinyl first, coming up with digital release 7 weeks later.

Die Loveparade-Tragödie war für Dich als Begründer des Ganzen auch persönlich ein harter Schlag.

Beschäftigst Du Dich heute wieder mit einem ähnlichen Konzept für Berlin, oder ist die Parade-Idee dadurch erst mal gänzlich auf Eis gelegt?

Die Loveparade ist ein harter Schlag für alle, die die Katastrophe hautnah miterlebt und erlitten haben. Entschädigungen werden bis zu 10 Jahre auf sich warten lassen, weil erst geklagt werden muß!

Fair ist das aus der sicht der Opfer nicht. Wer helfen will, der richte sich bitte an die Lovestiftung, die helfen kann. Gerade die elektronische Musikfamilie sollte in guten wie in schwierigen Zeiten zusammen halten. Deswegen haben wir mit electrocult_ einen gemeinnützigen Kulturträger gegründet um der elektronsichen Musik in Deutschland eine organisierte Form und Rechtsvertretung zu geben, einem Verein zur Förderung, Pflege und Darstellung der elektronischen Musik und Clubcultur, sowie des damit verbunden Lebensgefühls.

Being the founder of Loveparade, last years tragic was a hard slap in the face for you on a personal level. Are you back working on a similar project for Berlintoday, or did the parade-idea get hold on ice by this?

The loveparade was hard for everyone who was part of and suffered within the catastrophy.

Compensations will dure up to 10 years, becaus they have to sue first! That´s not fair from the victims point of view. Whoever wants to help should connect with the „lovestiftung“,which can help. Especially the electronic musicfamily should help eachother in good and bad times.

That´s why we founded with electrocult_ a a non-profit organisation to deliver an organized structure and professional judicial help. Text: Tofa German: Black | English: Green Es wird Sommer. Und in Spanien wird einem das im April schneller bewusst, als in Berlin. Zum diesjährigen Klubbers Event wurde Tresor gleich mit einer ganzen Meute an DJs auf eine eigene Tresor-20-JahreStage eingeladen, um den Spaniern und Spanierinnen die Nacht über den restlichen Schweiß aus den Poren zu treiben.

Das Line-Up las sich flüssig wie das Who-isWho der Tresor-Geschichte und ging auch den Zuschauern runter wie Öl.

Mit dabei waren Octave One feat Ann Saunderson, Abe Duque und Blake Baxter (Vocals), Alexander Kowalski, Aux 88 presenting Black Tokyo, Miki Craven, Dave Tarrida, Mad Max und Tony Mendez. Unser Altbekannter Lars hatte die Lichtfraktion unter Kontrolle, während ich die Visuals ins richtige Licht rückte.

David und Carola kümmerten sich um den Merch und hatten sichtlich zu kämpfen mit den wilden Spaniern, die nur im seltensten Fall des Englischen annähernd mächtig waren.

Der Freitag Abend (15.04.) fing um 21:00h entspannt an - jedoch weniger entspannt für die Besucher, da wegen des lokalen Fussballspiels Madrid vs Barcelona in ganz Madrid Polizeikontrollen durchgeführt wurden und sich erst gegen 00:00h die zwei Mainfloors sichtbar füllten.

Summer is coming closer. And in Spain you bump into it much earlier than in Berlin.

For this years Klubbers Festival Tresor was invited to host a full Tresor 20 years stage with a amn good Line-Up to get the Spanish people wet and sweat.

The Line-Up was like the who-is-who of Tresors´history and the spectators loved it.

On board we had Octave One feat Ann Saunderson, Abe Duque and Blake Baxter (Vocals), Alexander Kowalski, Aux 88 presenting Black Tokyo, Miki Craven, Dave Tarrida, Mad Max and Tony Mendez.

Lars was in charge of doing the lights and I was booked for the visuals.

While David and Carola took care of the merchandise they soon found out that the wild Spanish people nearly spoke no English at all, but hand and feet made communication made the rest.

Friday night (15.04,) started early and easy for us at 9pm Not so for the visitors as a local footbal match of Madrid vs Barcelona forced policecontrols allover the city and the mainfloors were getting crowded not before midnight.

68 Dafür hatte de Tresorfloor zur Primetime über 4000 Gäste die mir erstmals lauthals auffielen, als sie alle zusammen lauthals „KO-WAL-SKIKO-WAL-SKI “ im Chor riefen, als Besagter die Bühne betrat.

Auch Aux 88 überzeugte mit einem knackigen Set von einer Stunde und bot mit dem a/v-live Ptrojekt „Black Tokyo“ einen audiovisuellen Augen- und Ohrenschmaus vom Feinsten.

Octave One feat. Ann Saunderson hatten im Anschluss schon einen vollen Floor und leichtes Spiel mit ihren weltbekannten Hymnen.

Miki Craven und Dave Tarrida waren nach dieser Schubdüse auch nicht mehr zu bremsen und bretterten Vollgas die konstant warm und satt klingenden Scheiben vom Plattenteller.

Das der Backstage-Raum 6 Stockwerke höher nur zu Fuss zu erklimmen war, war wohl der einzige Wehrmutstropfen am gesamten Abend.

Am Samstag waren wir nochmal vor Ort, um Carl Craig zu begutachten, was auch den ganzen Wenig-Schlaf-Trip richtig schön abrundete.

Das eigentliche Highlight für die Weitangereisten war das Designerhotel Puerta America, das von bekannten Architekturgrößen wie Zaha Hadid und Norman Foster veredelt wurde und nach den Strapazen der Nächte das perfekte Gegengewicht war.

FAZIT: Die Spanier hatten ihren gelungenen Festival-Auftakt in die Saison und wir hatten eine Menge Spaß. Mission for next year is clear: KLUBBERS again!

But on the other hand, Tresor floor was packed with more than 4.000 people at primetime. I could instantly feel that, when the crowd started shouting „KO-WAL-SKI-KOWAL-SKI “ in a chorus when he entered the stage.

Also Aux 88 convinced with a smacking one hour lasting audio-visual liveshow, presenting their project „Black Tokyo“ - a fantastic highlight for eyes and ears .

Octave One feat. Ann Saunderson had an easy take-over of an insane good crowd and the vibe was groovy while they played their hymns for all dancing people.

Miki Craven and Dave Tarrida were not to stop after that mindblowing liveset and delivered constant warm and phat tunes right from the turtables till the end of the night.

Saturday we went there again to have a view over carl Craigs shoulder, which was a nice finishing of not-that-much-sleep-finding trip.

The inofficial highlight for all the worldtravelling artists was the accomodation at a designer-hotel named Puerta America which was designed by worldleading architects like Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster. That was the perfect balance of powers in exchange for the exhausting nights.

CONCLUSION: The Spanish people had a damn good start-up of their festival-season and we had great music and lots of fun.

Mission for next year is clear: KLUBBERS again!

Im Zeitalter der elektronischen Musik mit all ihren Facetten sollte einem der Name Tadao Kikumoto schonmal über den Weg gelaufen sein. Die Wenigsten werden mit dem Namen etwas anzufangen wissen, doch wenn man zwei Schlagwörter fallen läßt, macht es vielleicht auf einmal klick!

Herr Kikumoto ist der Entwickler der analogen Maschinen TB-303, TR-808 und TR909 und nebenbei auch Produktionsleiter und Präsident von Roland.

Wir haben uns zwei Geräte aus dem Hause Roland etwas genauer angeschaut um der analogen Geschichte im Bereich eletronischer Musik unseren Tribut zu zollen.

In the age of electronic music with all its shapes and variations, the name Tadao Kikumoto should have crossed your path.

Most of us never heard of that name, but once we drop three simple keywords - it should make klick: Mr. Kikumoto is the developer of the analogue machines TB-303, TR-808 and TR909 and besides that he´s productionmanager and president of the wellknown brand Roland.

We´ve checked out two machines from Roland to pay our tribute to the history of analoge machines within the fields of electronic music.

88 8(0)8 1981 brachte Roland das Gerät auf den Markt und über die Jahre wurde es einer der beliebtesten analogen Drumsynthesizer. Ihr Klang (der echte Percussion-Instrumente imitieren sollte) ist elektrisch und eher weich, er war u. a. prägend für House, den frühen Hip-Hop und Electro, tauchte aber auch im Pop auf. Die erste Verwendung lässt sich bereits im Dezember 1980 nachweisen, wo das Yello Magic Orchestra die 808 bei einem Liveauftritt in dem Song „1000 Knives,“ der original von Ryuichi Sakamoto 1978 komponiert wurde. verwendet haben soll. Einer der größten Hits, in denen die 808 exponiert eingesetzt wird, ist Marvin Gaye‘s „Sexual Healing“. Darüber hinaus kann man sie auf vielen Phil Collins- und Genesis-Aufnahmen hören. Auf Whitney Houston‘s „I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)“ ist die berüchtigte Cowbell zu hören, der Song beginnt mit einem mehrfach wiederholten kurzen Pattern der 808 unisono (bd, claps, cowbell). In Britney Spears‘ Song Break the Ice wird mittels eines kurzen Breaks das Herzklopfen mit der Bassdrum der 808 verglichen. Die 808 genießt in der Geschichte der elektronischen Musik einen kaum vergleichbaren Kultstatus.

It was in 1981 when Roland released the TR-808 and over the years it became one of the most-wanted analogue drum-synthesizers.

It´s sound (which was made to imitate real percussion-instruments) is electronic and more soft. The sound was formative for House, the early Hip-Hop and Electro but also appeared in pop productions.

The first official usage points back to December 1980, when the Yello Magic Orchestra used the 808 during a live-set in the song „1000 Knives,“ composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1978.

One of the most successfull hits where the 808 was essential part of is „Sexual Healing“

by Marvin Gaye. You can also find it´s tunes in productions of Phil Collins/ Genesis.

In Whitney Houston‘s „I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)“ you can hear the inotorious cowbell. The song starts with a short loop-pattern of the 808 unisono (bd, claps, cowbell). In Britney Spears‘ Song „Break the Ice“, a short break imitates the heartbeat by the 808s´ bassdrum.

Aufsehenerregend war die von der Firma Propellerhead 1996 auf den Markt gebrachte Software-Emulation „ReBirth RB-338“, bei der zwei Roland TB-303en mit einer 808 kombiniert wurden. Als günstigen Hardware-Nachbau gibt es die Novation Drumstation, die Sounds der beiden Klassiker TR-808/909 bietet, allerdings ohne deren Stepsequenzer und mit einem eher mäßigen Timing.I Die 808 war und ist fester Bestandteil von Releases weltbekannter Künstler, wie z.B. von Felix da Housecat, OutKast, 2LiveCrew, Eminem, The Beasty Boys, Jeff Mills uvm.

Even if you can get tons of sampled good Tr808 sounds today, the original TR-808 is still an object of desires. The pricerange for this vintage machine starts around €1250.- and up.

Sensational was the Software-Emulation „ReBirth RB-338“ by Propellerhead in 1998, where two Roland TB-303s were combined with the 808. An affordable clone is the Novation Drumstation, that offers sounds of the two classic machines lTR-808/909, without the originals stepsequenzer and with a worse timing.

The TR-808 started the chase light principle which is part of the most likewise instruments today.

The 808 was and still is common part of releases by worldknown artists like Felix da Housecat, Bassnectar, OutKast, 2LiveCrew, Eminem, The Beasty Boys, Jeff Mills amo.

Ein Spielzeug für Erwachsene. Der erste Eindruck: was zur Hölle ist das denn? Die Cr-8000 sieht mehr wie ein Spielzeug aus dem Kinderzimmer aus als viele der alten Drumcomputer.

Wenn man sich diese Maschine aber genauer anschaut, kann man viele Rhythmus-Kombinationen und Zweckentfremdungen herauszaubern - und wenn man obendrein noch Besitzer einer moddifizierten Version mit mehreren Einzel-Outouts ist, dann rockt die Maschine richtig!

Die Sounds klingen wie alte Bekannte aus den früheren Zeiten des Electro-Boogie und BBoying, sobald du all die Funktionen etwas besser kennst, macht es auch richtig Spasß, sich daran auszutobben.

Ganz simpel: die Sounds sind einfach klase!

Klassische electronische Drumsounds die auf die berühmte CR-78 und TR-808 verweisen.

Keiner der Sounds ist original editierbar und es gibtr nur einen Mono Audio Output, was die Maschine weniger zu einem Studio-Schmuckstück macht, als zu einem beliebten Sammlerobjekt Neben all diesen Limitierungen - die bei vielen CompuRhythms auftauchen - hat die CR-8000 heine Reihe an Preset Patterns mit sehr vielen unterschiedlichen Styles, ebenso wie programmierbare Patterns mit acht Speicher-Patches.

Während die CR-8000 überwiegend abgesampled wurde für die heutigen Anwendungen. hat

A toy for adults. The first impression is, what the hell is that? The CR-8000 looks more like a kids toy than all the other vintage machines do.

Taking a closer look on this machine shows many options of rhythm-combinations and if you are the lucky owner of a cr-8000 with modified multiple single-outputs, that machine can simply rock.

The sounds are familiar like you´re into the first days of elctro-boogie and bboying, once you know the functions and combinations it´s even more fun. Well the sounds are great! Classic electronic drum sounds that hint back to the famous CR-78 and TR-808 drum-machines. But none of these sounds are editable and there is only one mono audio output making this machine less of a studio-piece of gear and more of a collector‘s item. Aside from these limitations it, like other CompuRhythms, has a series of preset patterns in many different styles as well as programmable patterns with 8 storage patches.

Ohne Zweifel hat die 808 eine bessere Clap und Cowbell und die CR-78 ist die Sammler-Legende aber diese Maschine hat eben auch eine eigene Seele. Das klingt doch wie die 808 und eine Minute später plötzlich wie die CR-78, merkwürdig?

Viele mögen die CR-8000 als die Billig-Variante der 808 sehen, aber in Wahrheit ist das Geräte mehr als das, vorausgesetzt man missbraucht sie richtig - heraus kommen können dabei einige sehr abgefahrene Beats und Sounds.

Als Konkurrenz zu Korgs 1979 eingeführter KR-55 gab es die CR-8000 1980 schon vor der 808, also vorsicht bei Vorverurteilung!

While the CR-8000 is usually sampled for today‘s applications, the thing about the CR8000 that cannot be captured by sampling the sounds is the swing/groove feel which has its own control knob. The intervals between beats are variable, but also the timbre changes... unique is the hi-hat! In tandem with the accent function, the hats on the CR-8000 are just amazing. Without doubt, the 808 has a better clap and cowbell and the CR-78 is the stuff of legend, but this machine has an own soul too.

It does sound odd that it reminds you of an 808 one minute and a 78 the next but it also has its own personality. You can get some very cool effects by combining patterns on an 8000.

You often might see these selling as a „poor man‘s 808“ but in reality the CR-8000 is much more than that and when abused, can offer some seriously unique beats.

Put on the market as an equivalent to Korgs KR-55 (1979) the CR-8000 came out in 1980 and by that was one year earlier availible than the 808, so be carefull with prejudice-judgment!
