Collect for the Seventh Sunday of Easter O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. • at the conclusion of the collect all sing:

• all be seated

First Lesson

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, “Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus-- for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the

day when he was taken up from us-- one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.” So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 1 • sung by the choir

Anglican Chant by Gerre Hancock

Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, * nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! Their delight is in the law of the LORD, * and they meditate on his law day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; * everything they do shall prosper. It is not so with the wicked; * they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, * nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, * but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Second Lesson

1 John 5:9-13

If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. Those who believe in the Son of God have the

2

testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave

us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

John 17:6-19

The Holy Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to John.

Glory to you Lord Christ

Looking up to heaven, Jesus prayed, “I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. While

I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ. 3

Cathedral Matters Christ Church Cathedral, Louisville, KY

May 17, 2015

A church in the heart of the city with a heart for the c ity For more on these and other Cathedral Matters go to . . . www.christchurchlouky.org Weekly E-Notes facebook.com/ChristChurchLouKY • Twitter.com/ChristChurchLou My dear people of Christ Church Cathedral and our Guests,

. . . . .from the Dean

Today is Expectation Sunday; it falls between the Ascension and the Day of Pentecost, and it is a time rich with anticipation for the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Enjoy it—and the next few Sundays: May 24: The Feast of the Pentecost May 31: The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity (we will begin the ENRICHING OUR WORSHIP Eucharistic Prayer on this day—read more about that on page 2) June 7: The Feast of Corpus Christi When I am asked ‘how can one best support the Cathedral?’, I point out the gifts of time and effort and treasure. Time—our presence at worship, formation and fellowship. Effort—our volunteering to accomplish ministry tasks. Treasure—our annual pledge and offering. We are doing well in all of these areas: ministry, involvement, pledging and giving. Just recently, we reached our goal of $300,000 pledged for ministry this year (read more about that on page 6). I am proud of your faithfulness. There is another way you can help to secure both the present and the future of the Cathedral. Consider giving to the Cathedral Endowment—there are so many ways that you can do that. Join us on Sunday, June 14, following the 10:00 service, for a special Coffee Hour and Conversation about being part of our Cathedral Endowment. Guest speakers will be the Rev’d Dick Humke, and Carter Ruml of Stites & Harbison. They, along with Rob Beard, will explain how every single one of us can be part of this important ministry. Stay tuned for more information, and in the meanwhile, let me know if you have questions—you can always reach me at 502-632-3213. One more program note: Today is the last day of Children’s Sunday School for this season, but we return with fresh new ideas, activities and presentations on Sunday, September 13. As your prepare for worship today, consider these words of Dennis Hamm: Each account (of the Ascension) is a way of affirming that Jesus’ final physical departure was a transition leading from the glory of the resurrection to the mission of the church empowered by the Holy Spirit. The accounts urge us not upward but forward. I’m glad you are here today Faithfully,

The Very Rev’d Joan Pritcher Your Dean in the Interim On this Seventh Sunday of Easter (Expectation Sunday)

Enriching Our Worship

On Trinity Sunday, May 31, we begin a summer of Enriching Our Worship (EOW), Prayer 2. EOW is a Eucharistic Prayer produced by the National Church Standing Liturgical Commission in 1998 and later approved for use by General Convention. It will not be new to you—Christ Church Cathedral has used it before. In EOW, you will recognize the familiar shape of the Eucharistic prayer that we hear every Sunday: the Sursum Corda (‘the Lord be with you; and also with you’ ...), the Sanctus (‘Holy, holy, holy’ ...) and the Great AMEN. If you have not experienced EOW, you might enjoy its simplicity.

Reevaluation of Cathedral Administration

The Cathedral Chapter is evaluating the Cathedral’s sexton and Parish Administration needs, and how best to address these needs. Your feedback is vital in making the right decisions. Start by answering the following question: What is most important to you in the operation of our office (including communications) and in the care of our buildings? The Chapter committee working on this project looks forward to your responses. The committee includes Keith Stevenson, Aaron Angel, Jan Margerum, Hollis Real, and Susan Torok.

Kroger Community Rewards program

The new Kroger Community Rewards program is paying benefits back to the Cathedral every time you use your regular Kroger Plus Card, the regular savings card most of you take to Kroger for your shopping. It’s easy to get started, and the rewards for the Cathedral start immediately after you register your card. You may register your card by phone (1-888-904-0800) or on-line. Here’s how the on-line registration works: • Visit www.kroger.com/communityrewards and hit “Create an Account.”.” • Register your Kroger Plus Card.

• Once you are registered, you’ll see a tab that says “Kroger Community Rewards.” Hit the “Enroll” tab. • You will be asked for the company name or number. For best results use the Cathedral company number, 11088.

• Confirm “Christ Church Cathedral” as your charity and you are signed up. After you complete registration, the Cathedral will reap the financial benefits every time you use your Kroger Plus Card.

6

Stewardship Notes We are blessed and we can BE a blessing The Cathedral has received 88 pledges, totaling $300,000. That represents: • 33 increased pledges • 14 new pledges • 33 pledges with no change • 8 pledges with decreases

The goal remains 100 percent participation. If you have not registered your intention to give to God through Christ Church Cathedral, there’s still time. No amount is too large and no amount is too small. They all make a difference. If you have questions, this handy Q and A might help: How do I get a Pledge Card? There are Pledge Cards in the Narthex, at the south door, and at the office table. Just ask if you can’t find one. How can I submit a Pledge Card? You may mail in your Pledge Card, place it in the offering basin as it is passed any Sunday morning, or you may give it to a member of the Chapter, the Finance Committee, or to the Dean. How can I help even more? You can continue to pray with us. Try these words:

God of infinite blessing, when you fashioned the world the morning stars sang together and the host of heaven shouted for joy; open our eyes to the wonders of your creation and teach us to use all things for good, that we may be blessed and be a blessing so that all may live in your abundance; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
