Introduction Welcome once again to the Ringwood and District Shopping and Services Guide for 2011, an invaluable guide for you all. It is of great pleasure for me to now be involved within the business community of this wonderful historic market town. Despite the economic climate Ringwood is still welcoming new businesses to the town to add to the already splendid array of shops to tempt us. Everything you need is right here on the doorstep, we hardly need to leave our lovely town for anything whether it be for shopping or for eating. We are proud to be one of the few towns that have retained to a large extent many fantastic and varied independent retailers. If you haven’t visited us yet, then I would strongly recommend that you do so. Before working daily in Ringwood it was always one of my favourite haunts for a day of retail therapy and culinary delights. A day of shopping in a warm and friendly town, followed by lunch in one of our many superb restaurants – what more could you want from a shopping experience? We also have a number of leading health and beauty salons if you want to treat yourself for that special event, go on, try them – you’re worth it!! On behalf of the Ringwood Chamber of Trade and Commerce and all the businesses in Ringwood, we wish you a very warm welcome and sincerely hope that you will visit us soon and that you will repeat your experience many times over with us, there is something for everyone in Ringwood! Ianthe Slinger – President of the Ringwood Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

The school has an impressive array of after school clubs and activities, ranging from role play (Reception - Year 2) Fun fitness Boot Camp (Year 6 above) soccer coaching (most age groups) Street Dancing (Junior and Senior) right through to prep club (all ages) and after school GCSE drama. School concerts are enjoyed by the parents each term with every pupil performing in drama, music or dance and zest activities are available in the summer holidays. This is for all local children as well as Moyles pupils. “Our great GCSE results are testament to the school’s teachers and teaching, but there is far more to life than that” comments Headmaster Greg Meakin “Children deserve a rich and wide range of experience to give their personalities opportunity for expression and development. Interests in youth can be nurtured to become passions for life. Pupils leave Moyles Court as confident young adults, with broad horizons, good manners and great prospects.” Contact 01425 472856 www.moylescourt.co.uk

Ringwood Town & Country Experience An exciting museum project on the outskirts of Ringwood. It is a replica of an earlier Ringwood. There is the Market Square in the 1960s and a life-size version of Ringwood Steam Railway Station. The “Experience” takes you on a journey through time. Enjoy the experience of the historical development of Ringwood and the surrounding area. There is a real ancient roundhouse, full size shops circa 1940s, and 60s. There is even a 1950s Frampton’s Mill The Experience can be found off the Salisbury road. It has tea rooms open daily (except Saturday in the winter) from 10a.m to 4.30p.m for light lunches and delicious teas. Contact Jeff Harkness 01425 472746 www.rtce.co.uk Wednesday Market The Wednesday market has been in Ringwood for at least 780 years. Farm produce and general wares are still sold today. Dozens of stalls collect in the Market Place at first light, the rights of which are still owned by the Lord of the Manor Edward Morant who now lives in Brockenhurst. Henry II granted the Market Charter to the Earl of Pembroke in 1226 when the purchased 2000 acres of Ringwood and surrounding land from Lord Arundel in 1792. The land was sold in 1916 to pay death duties but the Market Charter and the Morant family retained the Market and Poulner Common. Contact: www.rlds.co.uk

Ringwood Carnival September 17th 2011 Probably the largest Carnival in the South and certainly the friendliest and liveliest. Two processions afternoon and evening, through the town to finish at the Bickerley Green with dozens of fantastic floats and exciting attractions on the field. The Carnival selects the teenage Carnival Queen and attendants and the younger Carnival princesses. Contact: Howard Cox 01425 479254 www.ringwoodcarnival.org Ringwood Soiree The Ringwood Soiree is held over two weeks in October and November by the Ringwood Musical and Dramatic Society to raise money for local charities. This is a risqué review best suited to adults only. The soiree started 60 years ago at the Crown Hotel in Ringwood to raise money for the Ringwood Carnival and has remained a slightly naughty evening of variety, fun and laughter ever since. Shows are currently performing at the Hub theatre in Verwood and are invariably a sell out. Next shows week commencing 18th Oct and commencing Oct 31st 2011. Welcome to Avon Heath

South Park From the car park there are three waymarked trails to follow between 3/4 mile and 2 miles in length.

North Park The ideal place for your first visit. A large pay and display car park gives access to all facilities including visitor centre, café, children’s play area, toilets and telephone. There is plenty of room for picnics. Four waymarked trails of between 3/4 mile and 21/2 miles offer a chance to explore. Another walk starts from Birch Road car park. It is a little over a mile long and passes two ‘Park Art’ sculptures.

As in North Park there is a mixture of heathland and wooded areas but here there is more of an open feel. There are extensive views across to the coast and beyond to the Isle of Wight, while inland a panorama of North Dorset can be seen.

The large areas of heathland are scattered with trees, while purple banks of flowering heather provide a stunning sight in the summer. You may also be lucky enough to see some of the rare birds and reptiles that make this heath their home.

Avon Heath Country Park takes its name from the very special heathland habitat. This could once be found extensively in Dorset but has reduced in area by 85% over the past 200 years. Considerable conservation work goes on, involving the RSPB, to restore the heathland and enhance its value for wildlife. The Dartford Warbler and Nightjar are just two of the internationally rare species that make Avon Heath their home. The Park is also a wonderful place for people, where visitors are welcome to explore and enjoy.

We have supported various youth groups in Ringwood and have bought a pool table for the youth club. Avon Valley Concerts The Avon Valley Concerts music society was formed in 1983 to bring first-class classical music to Ringwood, Fordingbridge and the surrounding area. The society presents six concerts a year over the winter months and aims to provide a rich and varied programme ranging from solo performances to string quartets and wind quintets. Our artistes range from well-established musicians to the young and up-and-coming stars of the future. We hope very much to welcome you to these concerts here on your doorstep and hope also that you will take advantage of the discounts and concessions available. Contact: Verity Ruecker 01425 472522 www.avonvalleyconcerts.com Ringwood and Hangersley Women’s Institute WI is a democratic, social & educational (in its widest possible sense) charity. Every WI provides speakers & demonstrators monthly on a variety of topics decided by members. Other meetings, crafts, walking, discussion/drama groups, choirs etc. are decided by members of individual WIs. The subscription is deliberately modest in order to ensure that all women who wish to join may do so. Events are organised throughout Hampshire & include arts/ crafts, sports, leisure activities visits to places of interest, home economics & gardening, music, speech & drama, public & international affairs, leadership & much more. at 8.00pm at The Elm Tree, Ringwood. We can be contacted via our website where you can see our events diary for future activities. Our purpose is to serve both our local and wider communities through a variety of humanitarian and community projects. These can range from helping individuals in need by practical “hands on” to financial assistance, or supporting other local charitable causes such as hospices, local hospitals, schools and other organisations so benefiting the public at large. Contact : Yorky Tukes 0845 833 5819 www. ringwoodandfordingbridgelions.org.uk Trinity Centre Christchurch Road Trinity Centre consists of the newly refurbished church, plus new hall and meeting rooms which are available for hire. Its imaginative design provides a light and airy space for worshipping, meeting, teaching and socialising. Walking through the main entrance into the Foyer, one is immediately struck by the amount of life and many activities going on. Pick up a leaflet to see all the activities offered to the Ringwood community, or take time from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to sit quietly in the church itself or in the small room set aside for prayer and quiet. The halls available at the Wesley Centre complement those at the Trinity Centre, providing accommodation for a wide variety of uses and groups. Both Centres have very adequate kitchen facilities for the preparation of refreshments and meals. Contact John Birch 01425 461440 www.trinityringwood.co.uk

RINGWOOD CHAMBER OF TRADE & COMMERCE Lunch from 12 noon – 2pm or longer 10th February at Prezzo 14th April – Venue to be announced 16th June – Venue to be announced 11th August – Venue to be announced 13th October – Venue to be announced 15th Dec – Xmas lunch venue to be announced.

Ringwood Chamber of Commerce meets at 5pm on the first Tuesday of each month at Letchers Solicitors offices. In 2011 we have organised a number of events for the local business community including drinks at The Fish, a bi-monthly lunch venue to be announced, a Summer BBQ, Xmas Lunch and the Annual Santa Parade. We still very much have our thinking caps on and hope to announce more events that will tempt you into joining us in the future.

The Chamber is a “not for profit organisation” who are here to work on behalf of retailers and local businesses to bring cohesion and a voice to the local business community. We are hear to listen to our members and their needs and would welcome more input. If you think that you could make a difference or would like to be involved more in your local community then we would be delighted to hear from you. In difficult economic times it is even more important in my view that we “keep business local” and support each other, which can only be achieved if you we pull together and promote our businesses amongst each other.

Please check our website for any alterations to the schedule: Drinks at the Fish 27th January 24th February 31st March 28th April 26th May 30th June 28th July 25th August 29th September 27th October 24th November

If you would like an informal chat about joining the chamber or perhaps attending an event before committing to Membership then please call Ianthe Slinger on 01425 471424 or email her at Ianthe.slinger@letchers.co.uk.
