Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Diagrams differ from Signs and Symbols in what they represent and how they represent it. Diagrams are extremely precise as they have a spatial correlation and try to differentiate between “physical contructs and concepts”01 when representing its dynamic object. Signs and symbols have no spatial correlation and instead represent a dynamic object’s qualities, functions and properties in a materialistic manner.02

Week One
Precedent Analysis

When approaching to model the Serpentine Summer House, I used a bottom up approach. I started modeling the bottom first and then worked my way upwards. The process mainly consisted of tracing the lines off the drawings and extruding a surface from it. To tackle the top part’s compliacted shapes I utilised the control points to manipulate them into a the required shape.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Barkow Leibinger in the Serpintine Summer House produces 3 seperate thresholds divided by 3 large curved wood panels. The transistion between the thresholds are fluid allowing for and easy flow of movement throughout each of them. The seating are arragned to interact in different proximities, accomodating for more itimate and private conversations or more casual and lounge seating. The image below shows the sperpation of two thresholds, you can see in the image that the width of the seating allows for different affordance of seating positions.

Week Two
Isometric
Serpintine Summer House, 2016 I have used a North - East isometric as it showed 2 seperate thresholds and the movement of the top wooden planes. When modelling the pavilion I found the creation of the thresholds to be rather simple. Three big wooden panels, that are parts of a large circle define three seperate thresholds. As the paviliion is situated in the open people who go to it are usually seeking shade from the sun therefore I believe the main factor in effecting the traffic around the pavilion to be the shade created by the upper parts. The fluid design of the pavilion encourages the viewer from an outlook to circualte the pavilion to entice them to view the pavilion at all angles. I kept this in mind when trying to simulate the circulation of moevment to, from and around the pavilion.

Thresholds created by the combination of shade and terminating spaces. Afforance in the depth of the seating and the unqiue inlet of the top wooden paneling.

Process
Tracing the shadows made by elements of the pavilion at the appropiate times, colleating them together in rhino and then enhancing them in illustrator to create the shadows for the diagrams.

Following the same process as the previously I tried joining gradients (b&w) with shading to produce the finished product.
