UPHOLDING THE VALUES OF CHRISTIE’S Dan Conn Entrusts Proven Affiliates With Important Luxury Real Estate Markets PHO TO G RAPHY BY TAV JINIVIZIAN

Launching Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey and Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley are great opportunities for our agents and customers to have the ultimate Christie’s experience. How would you describe these opportunities? In a word: unprecedented. Being so integrated with the world’s leading art business presents opportunities no other real estate brokerage can replicate. Christie’s has more than 250 years of expertise in marketing fine art and luxury goods, and has built deep trust with clients across the centuries and around the world. The company’s specialists are passionate about luxury goods such as paintings, wines, jewelry and, of course, real estate, and about providing trusted advice to their clients across the property spectrum. This new venture sets us apart in our reach in the tri-state metro area and represents a further assurance that our home sellers and buyers are receiving the highest industry standards in brokerage service, both in the marketing of properties and providing expert guidance in a complex market environment. The team under Ilija Pavlovic’s direction is an ideal standard-bearer for this brokerage initiative in the important markets of Northern New Jersey, and Westchester and Hudson

Valley in New York. They opened 11 offices in New Jersey alone since the beginning of 2017 and today serve clients in Bergen, Morris, Somerset, Passaic, Hudson, Warren, Union, Essex, and Sussex counties as well as northern Hunterdon county, with all offices achieving dramatic market share growth in their respective communities. They have recently opened new offices in New City in Rockland County and Scarsdale in Westchester County, with more offices underway throughout their territory.

The recent Christie’s International Real Estate Owners’Conference in Paris was a great success and displayed all new directions of the Christie’s network, rejuvenated and re-energized. As the architect of Christie’s International Real Estate future, can you please describe the new direction.

I am happy that you mentioned our Paris conference. We have long operated an Affiliate business model, inviting established and qualified local brokerages to join our global network as independent members of a global marketing force. This has proven successful for almost 40 years and remains so today. That said, in looking to the future, we have recognized that some markets would be better served operating under the Christie’s real estate brand and, as opportunities arise in these important luxury markets, my responsibility, as CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate, is to identify who is most capable of operating a brokerage business while upholding the values of the esteemed Christie’s brand. I decided that proven network leaders were best to entrust this opportunity to — with hands-on support from our global team. In January 2018, Christie’s International Real Estate introduced its first company brokerage in New York City — with an office in the prime auction house space of Christie’s North American headquarters at Rockefeller Plaza. Now, a strategy of trusted Affiliates using only the Christie’s International Real Estate brand in collaboration with Christie’s International Real Estate has been rolled out to Aspen, Westchester and Hudson Valley, and Northern New Jersey, with network leaders establishing unmatched levels of client service in these luxury markets.

ASK THE CEO

Christie’s International Real Estate recently introduced the Masters’Circle. Can you tell us about this new initiative? We created the Christie’s International Real Estate Masters’ Circle to bring together the world’s most elite group of luxury residential real estate agents. In determining the agents’ eligibility, we look at their proven records of success, their passion for the art of real estate brokerage service, and their expertise in operating at the highest levels of our industry. The bar is set high for entry into our elite inner circle of luxury specialists and those selected fully deserve this honor. While an honor for agents, the heightened marketing platform of the Masters’ Circle also provides their clients with a sphere of influence beyond compare. These agents interface with other top professionals, their network colleagues, through exclusive Christie’s International Real Estate’s communication channels to exchange buying opportunities with a select global clientele. Masters’ Circle listings also appear on the homepage video carousel of our website, as well as in our globally syndicated video montage which is on display at Christie’s auctions worldwide, such as New York, London, Hong Kong, Moscow, Dubai and Mumbai. Other opportunities to promote properties represented by the Masters’ Circle include curated marketing materials distributed at Christie’s auctions and other luxury lifestyle events — for example, the Concours d’ Elegance automobile show in Pebble Beach, which is attended by international collectors, a very well qualified group of buyers of luxury goods, including real estate.

Christie’s International Real Estate CEO Dan Conn outside the Rockefeller Center office in New York City.

What are the upcoming Christie’s Auction House events and how is Christie’s International Real Estate participating? High season for Christie’s auctions is late fall and early spring. Christie’s will announce its top sales in the coming months and I look forward to what will be offered in New York, London, Geneva, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Los Angeles. This auction energy at Christie’s excites me every day. I walk to my office in Rockefeller Center and know that Christie’s is at the center of luxury

worldwide. Our significant art, luxury goods and real estate listings continue to make global headlines. Christie’s International Real Estate is currently representing the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on Martha’s Vineyard. Christie’s, as you may know, set the all-time art world auction record, selling Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi for more than US$450 million. This is the level of excellence that defines our company. Just this past June, The David Gilmour Guitar Collection was the most valuable musical instruments sale in auction history at more than $21 million with proceeds going to the charity ClientEarth. Christie’s continues to make headlines selling some of the world’s most iconic works of art, luxury goods, and of course, real estate.

You travel significantly. Which book do you recommend for our next flight?

The answer to this is not straightforward. I read the news incessantly and think everyone should. My book reading remains age appropriate for my children and I doubt Little House is the answer you’re looking for. Otherwise, unfortunately, my time is limited. I work on flights (these answers for example were prepared on a flight to Aspen to attend the formal launch of the Christie’s International Real Estate business in Aspen). If I have a few minutes, I torture myself reading golf magazines and trying to find the secret to a better swing. That’s a story that never ends!

Whether you’re sailing the Adriatic, exploring centuries-old city squares, or simply lingering in a sidewalk café enjoying black risotto and a crisp Malvazija Istarska from the Dalmatian wine region, Croatia lulls you in with its relaxed, stay-here-forever vibe. This historic port city on the country’s southern Dalmatian Coast, which Lord Byron once called “the pearl of the Adriatic,” exudes an atmosphere of storied history and old-world romance. “Dubrovnik’s entire Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a leisurely walk around its spectacular city walls is a bucket list experience,” says Ina Rodin, director North America, Croatian National Tourist Board. In fact, the pedestrianfriendly Stari Grad, as it’s called, is considered one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities. “Croatia, and Dubrovnik, in particular, continue to capture the imagination of U.S. travelers,” explains Rodin, noting that Afar magazine readers voted Dubrovnik the ‘Best Cultural Capital’ in 2018 and TripAdvisor recently confirmed that it was the site’s most searched city. There’s no doubting Croatia’s contemporary appeal — or the fact that antiquity is woven into even the most modern moments. Bartenders serve up creative cocktails, baristas craft artisan coffees, and Michelin-starred chefs work their magic with fresh local seafood, olive oil and truffles, all just steps from centuries-old fortresses, Gothic churches, and limestone-paved streets. From Dubrovnik, travel north along the Dalmatian coast to the storied city of Split, where

At the epicenter of Croatia’s second largest city, you’ll discover the sprawling, 1,700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous more recently as the dragon-training hub of Game of Thrones’ heroine, Daenerys. CHRISTIE’S IN CROATIA As part of its business expansion in Europe, Christie’s will be opening an office in Opatija, Croatia. The office will be led by highlyIvan experienced Kovacic local real estate developer, Ivan Kovacic. “Croatia is a leading cultural center and destination of the Mediterranean. We at Christie’s are very excited to showcase and offer this beautiful market area to our clients,” says Daniel Peros, associate vice president and business development manager, Christie’s International Real Estate.

and local olives in outdoor cafés. In fact, exceptional cuisine is an inescapable part of the Croatia experience. “No trip here is complete without savoring its wine and worldclass olive oil, its truffles from Istria,

and salt-harvested oysters from Mali Ston,” says Rodin, noting that each region has its own special wines and traditional ways of cooking. Because of its proximity to Italy just across the Adriatic, travelers to Istria on Croatia’s northwest coast discover lots of Italian and Mediterranean influences, including an abundance of black and white truffles. If you’re a fan of this culinary delicacy, consider joining an Istrian truffle hunter on a fall hunt for white truffles, then celebrate your subterranean score shaved atop scrambled eggs or a plate of warm risotto. Naturally, fresh seafood is the star of Croatia’s culinary scene and there’s no better place to enjoy it than while sailing along the Dalmatian Coast. By far, cruising is the most magical way to see the country, and it takes a surprising number of forms. But whether you opt for a small ship cruise with a regional company such as Kompas and Katarina, a more mainstream Mediterranean cruise itinerary with port stops in Dubrovnik and Split, or a highly personalized private voyage, the region’s rugged coastlines and secluded coves, tiny seaside villages and nearly deserted beaches, as seen from the deck of boat, offer unmatched moments of splendor.

American Airlines recently introduced the first non-stop flight from the U.S. to Croatia. Available seasonally from Philadelphia to Dubrovnik, the flight operates three days a week from early June to late September. In addition, U.S. travelers can fly into the country’s three busiest airports — Zagreb (ZAG), Split (SPU), and Dubrovnik (DBV) — via connecting flights through Amsterdam, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Istanbul, and other major cities on most major U.S. and European carriers. Fares range from $605 to $1,200 and up, depending on your travel dates.

Croatia’s high season is July and August, with temperatures averaging 80 degrees in Dubrovnik. Many travelers consider the cooler shoulder season of September and October a prime time to visit, with fewer tourists and more affordable accommodations. From November to April, temperatures dip as low as the 40s, with plenty of rainfall.

The country’s currency is the Croatian kuna. HRK 100 is equal to approximately USD $15. ATMs, known as bankomats, are available throughout Croatia.

The majority of hotels and resorts in Croatia offer free WiFi, as do many bars and restaurants. If you plan to use your cell phone in Croatia, check with your U.S. carrier about applicable charges and fees. You may want to turn off your phone’s data roaming and purchase a prepaid SIM card on arrival.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Travelers from the U.S. do not need a visa to visit Croatia. However, as the country is within the Schengen Zone, travelers will need to register online with the European Travel Information Authorization System, beginning in 2021.

Unique beaches and isolated coves are many on the Croatian coast and islands. But Zlatni Rat, near the town of Bol, may be the most beautiful. The unusual shape of the beach is due to the buildup of fine sediment and the effects of wind, waves and currents.

hen you’re ready to trade cold winters and long commutes for an idyllic stretch of sand, few island destinations satisfy the urge more completely than the Cayman Islands. Sunny and sophisticated, this tropical treasure is a far cry from the fictional island Herman Wouk conjured in his 60s-era novel Don’t Stop The Carnival. His was an island of mix-ups and mishaps, where life ran, often hilariously, on “island time.” In the Cayman Islands, the clock is far more precise — but the vibrant hues, swaying palms, and sea breezes are as captivating as Wouk’s illusory Caribbean isle. Not surprisingly, the Cayman Islands has turned many an island lover into a homeowner. And why not? “The Cayman Islands is one of the easiest places to reach in the Caribbean, with over 55 weekly nonstop flights from major cities in the U.S. and Canada. If you live in New York, you can be on Grand Cayman by lunch on Friday and home by bedtime on Sunday night — the perfect long weekend getaway with nonstop flights. And once you’re on island, most resort-residential properties are no more than a 15-minute drive from the airport,” says Fleur Coleman, a sales specialist at Provenance Properties Cayman Islands. Born and raised in Grand Cayman, Coleman delights in sharing her insider intel with Provenance Properties colleagues and would-be homeowners. The exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in the Cayman Islands, Provenance Properties markets luxury properties in some of the Cayman Islands’ most sought-after resort and residential communities, including the new Residences at Seafire, a stunning LEED© Silver-certified residential tower adjacent to the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa. Beyond the luxe condos that dot the crescentshaped beach, Provenance Properties lists everything from private townhomes to lavish single-family compounds tucked within gated communities like Crystal Harbour and Canal Point. Most offer close proximity to Grand Cayman’s newly renovated and expanded international airport, which was officially unveiled by HRH Prince Charles in March 2019. Easy access to and around the island, though, is only part of the appeal. Ease of home ownership and tax neutrality are two important lures. “There is no restriction on foreign ownership of land and no title insurance is required,” explains Jackie Doak, president of Business Development at Dart Real Estate, referencing the government’s statutory guarantee of title. In addition, alien landholding licenses are not required, and the Cayman Islands does not collect property tax (nor corporate, income, capital gains, inheritance or sales taxes).

24



Even more compelling is the island’s low crime/high culture way of life. A stable government, great healthcare, dependable power, and sophisticated communications mean vacation homeowners needn’t worry about losing access to life’s creature comforts. “Excellent infrastructure — modern roads and telecommunications, high-quality healthcare at local hospitals, wellappointed grocery stores, amazing restaurants and, of course, world-acclaimed Seven Mile Beach make the Cayman Islands a favorite for homeownership,” says Doak. The presence of more than 130 nationalities engenders a sophisticated international vibe felt island wide. From sushi to steakhouse fare, local crafts to contemporary art, salsa to reggae — the Cayman Islands is a melting pot of cuisine, art and everyday culture that quickly turns first-time visitors into lifelong friends. Called the “culinary capital Waterfront of the Caribbean,” the Cayman dining Islands serves up a bounty of coupled with island-grown goodness. Callaloo, a Caribbean cassava, calabash, mangoes, sunset is a plantains, and peppers find their can’t miss way onto menus anchored by Cayman Islands a seemingly endless supply of combination in fresh fish and seafood, including the lively town conch, turtle, snapper and of Camana Bay.

Among her must-dos are the Cayman Cookout, a foodie-friendly gathering hosted by celebrity chef Eric Ripert at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, and KAABOO, a cultural mashup featuring music, contemporary art, comedy, gourmet cuisine, craft cocktails, and more. “And, of course, Jessie’s Juice Bar — when it’s time for a kombucha and avocado toast to start your day — and Stingray City — to swim with the rays in their natural habitat.”

HOW TO: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY Owning a second home in the Cayman Islands is incredibly appealing but, let’s face it, it hardly falls into the category of “impulse purchase.” That’s why a “try before you buy” visit (or two!) is a great idea for prospective overseas buyers-turned-future homeowners. The expert team at Provenance Properties Cayman Islands coordinates seamless access to a handful of luxurious condostyle homes at The Residences at Seafire, a new 10-story, 62-unit residential tower adjacent to the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa on world-famous Seven Mile Beach. Ownership at The Residences at Seafire comes with plenty of advantages, including unfettered access to the exceptional facilities and amenities of an award-winning luxury resort. The first Kimpton property in the Caribbean, Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa earned AAA’s Five-Diamond rating in its first year of operation. Known for its “luxury without attitude” style, the resort offers guests and homeowners exceptional waterfront dining, indulgent spa services with names like Reef Deep and Ocean Calm, beachfront cabanas and watersports, and even a fully supervised children’s program. The Residences at Seafire is particularly ideal for buyers who may occasionally require extra space for extended family (266 guest rooms and suites are just steps away) or for those who plan to take up residence only part-time. Owners wishing to rent their property when not in residence can take advantage of the professionally managed short-term rental program offered by Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa, complete with a turnkey package featuring Restoration Hardware’s beachchic furnishings. An enthusiastic fan of residentialresort ownership, Ruth Gustafsson, sales executive at Provenance Properties Cayman Islands, recommends “purchasing a property that provides turnkey service so you can truly enjoy a carefree ownership experience — concierge, property management, recreation, and food and beverage services on site. Time is precious at your vacation property — make the most of it!”

ollowing the success of a global tour, the specially designed New York exhibition, and a marathon 12-hour auction, Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence achieved $109,271,875 at Christie’s New York, establishing the highest total for any auction of Indian art and Mughal objects, and the second highest auction total for a private jewelry collection. Sale registrants came from 45 countries across five continents and there was extensive participation across all sale channels with notable institutional bidding. The sale was presented in partnership between Christie’s market-leading Jewelry department and World Art Department along with the independent art advisory firm, The Fine Art Group. Over the course of the sale, three world auction records were set for Indian works of art. The top lot of the sale was A Belle Époque Devant-decorsage, by Cartier, Paris, 1912, which sold for $10,603,500 to a private collector in the room. Additional top lots included The Mirror of Paradise, 52.58 carats, D Color, IF, which achieved $6,517,500; The Shah Jahan Dagger that sold for $3,375,000, establishing the record price for an Indian jade object and record for a piece with Shah Jahan provenance; an Antique Imperial Spinel, Pearl and Emerald Necklace, which realized $3,015,000; and the Golconda Diamond

Guillaume Cerutti, chief executive officer of Christie’s: “We are very honored to have been entrusted with this magnificent and diverse selection of jewels, art and objects from the larger Al Thani Collection. The strong results today, after 12 hours of non-stop bidding, in front of a packed room, and with phone and online bidders from all over the world, reflect the exceptional quality of this special collection and position it among the most storied private collections ever featured at auction.” Other notable results included important signed pieces by Cartier, including a Spinel, Natural Pearl, Diamond and Emerald Bead ‘Imperial Moghul Necklace’ and Earrings, that sold for $1,935,000. Contemporary pieces by JAR and Bhagat were also 100-percent sold, greatly exceeding estimates. Impressive prices were achieved for bejeweled Mughal objects including an Enameled and Gem Set Model of a Parrot, which realized $1,035,000; and an Enameled and Gem Set Huqqa, that achieved $759,000, establishing the world auction record for an Indian huqqa. Philip Hoffman, founder and CEO, The Fine Art Group: “I am honored that The Fine Art Group were able to play a part in this record-breaking sale of Indian and Mughal Jewelry. The success

of Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence is testament to the hard work of the Christie’s team, led by François Curiel, Rahul Kadakia and William Robinson.” Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewelry at Christie’s, commented, “Beginning with the sale announcement in April, there has been an overwhelming response to this exceptional collection with momentum building from the international tour to the New York exhibition, culminating with the excitement witnessed in the saleroom. Today, we witnessed a record total for the world’s greatest collection of Indian jewels and jeweled objects to ever be brought to auction. Drawing key inspirations from the Maharaja of Indore and his palace Manik Bagh (‘Palace of Rubies’), the bespoke New York exhibition evoked the artistic dialogue of the East and the West with the incorporation of Jalis, latticed screens, dreamlike floral installations, including an orchid canopy, juxtaposed with art deco influences, featuring luxurious marquetry, brass light

Next year, works of art from this encyclopedic collection, which includes over 6,000 objects, will be shown at a new museum space in Paris. n a packed saleroom at Christie’s New York, with a record number of online bidders, The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, the largest and most comprehensive sale of guitars, was 100-percent sold and totaled $21,490,750, becoming the most valuable musical instruments sale in auction history. Leading the collection of 126 guitars was the iconic 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster, which achieved $3,975,000, setting a world-auction record for any guitar. The iconic ‘Black Strat’ was Gilmour’s primary performance and recording instrument integral to recording many of Pink Floyd’s greatest albums, including The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of The Moon, as well as his solo albums. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to the charity ClientEarth. David Gilmour provided a statement the day before the auction: “The global climate crisis is the greatest challenge that humanity will ever face, and we are within a few years of the effects of global warming being irreversible. As Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist said in a speech earlier this year, ‘Either we choose to go on as a civilization, or we don’t.’ The choice really is that simple, and I hope that the sale of these guitars will help ClientEarth in their cause to use the law to bring about real change. We need a civilized world that goes on for all our grandchildren and beyond in which these guitars can be played and songs can be sung.” ClientEarth CEO James Thornton said: “This is a truly humbling and extraordinary gift, which goes beyond our wildest expectations. It’s difficult to express just how deeply grateful we are to David for choosing ClientEarth as the beneficiary of this historic auction.” In the months leading up to the auction, over 12,000 fans booked hour-long time slots at the tour stops in London, Los Angeles and New York to get up-close to the guitars. In excess of 500,000 people viewed the content around the sale on Christies.com, and more than 2,000 bidders from 66 countries registered for the sale. 97 percent of all guitars in the sale were sold to or directly underbid by online registrants. 38 percent of the lots were purchased by online bidders. After delaying the start of the sale one hour to accommodate the unprecedented number of bidders who queued around the block in Rockefeller Center to witness auction history, the sale quickly set records when lot 2, Gilmour’s Martin D-35 sold for $1,095,000 — a new world auction record for a C.F. Martin guitar. Estimated at $10,00020,000, this acoustic guitar was immortalized in the legendary Pink Floyd tracks Wish You Were Here and Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Top lots included the 1954 White Fender Stratocaster #0001 (estimate: $100,000-150,000), which was used on several recordings, including Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 2 and 3). The guitar sold for $1,815,000, which was a new world record for a Fender Stratocaster until hours later the record was smashed again by the ‘Black Strat.’

AFTERNOON TEA IN NYC Five-Star Hotels Cater to Elegant English Custom

A

FRO M CHRISTIE’S LUXURY D EFINED PHOTOG RAPHY PROVID ED BY BACCAR AT HOTEL NEW YORK , AND PLAZA HOTEL NEW YORK

fternoon tea, that singularly English custom, is a ritual set to the music of conversation, clink and clatter of bone china cups and silver spoons on giltedge saucers, accompanied by a tiered stand layered with cucumber sandwiches, buttered scones with lashings of strawberry jam, and dainty cakes. Tea drinking came into fashion in the British Isles thanks to a Restoration interloper, the Infanta Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort of King Charles II. Her dowry included a chest of tea favored by her Portuguese royal court. Two centuries later, the more elaborate ritual of taking “afternoon tea” came into existence, devised by another aristocrat, Anna, Duchess of Bedford, friend and Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria. In the mid-19th century, it was customary for the English upper classes to dine between eight and nine o’clock. One afternoon, during a stay at the Duke of Rutland’s castle in Leicestershire, the duchess complained of a “sinking feeling.” (We can imagine her delicate swoon onto a convenient divan.) She then ordered a tray of bread and butter, and a hot cup of tea brought to her rooms. That light refreshment to ward off her midafternoon hunger pangs eventually moved into the grander drawing room, and added delicate cakes, fruit scones, and crustless sandwiches for the delectation of London society. Thus, began the genteel affair that would become a staple of the English afternoon, from country house drawing rooms to the palm courts of the nation’s smartest hotels. Since then, London’s great hotels have become famous for

the most formal afternoon teas: The Goring (a favorite of the royal family), Claridge’s, the Langham, The Savoy, and grandest of all, The Ritz. Just a few steps along Piccadilly is Fortnum & Mason, another institution famous for its formal afternoon tea service, a tradition since 1926 (the department store has been importing and blending tea leaves since 1707). Today, just about every five-star hotel and tearoom in the UK and, indeed, across the globe, serves an elegant permutation of the late-afternoon English culinary classic. Afternoon tea can be enjoyed in many neighborhoods of New York City, mostly in five-star hotels, but always in beautifully decorated rooms dedicated to tea service, at least during afternoon tea times. Just to clarify, the terms “high tea” and “afternoon tea” are not interchangeable. They are quite different experiences. The names of each type of tea service are both literal and counterintuitive. High tea is called “high” because it’s served at a high table such as a dining table or counter. High tea is served in the early evening and includes hearty savory dishes accompanied by bread and butter, followed by pudding. It is essentially supper served with a cup of tea. Quite the contrary to the elegant affair known as afternoon tea, which takes place at around 4 p.m., between lunch and dinner. It is served at a low table such as a coffee table, and often referred to as “low tea.” Afternoon tea includes finger fare served in three courses: small sandwiches sans crusts with savories; then scones with clotted cream and jam; followed by cakes and pastries. Here are some etiquette tips for those not steeped in the protocols of afternoon tea service.

Typically, all three courses will be presented at once on a three-tiered curate stand. The tiny sandwiches will be on the bottom tier and should be eaten first. The second course, scones — dry, crumbly quick bread — will be on the middle tier. Eat the dessert, cakes, or petits four from the top tier last. Be sure you’ve designated one person to pour for everyone. Add milk first, if that’s how you like your tea, never after the tea is poured. Never stir your tea in circles, but swirl it side to side. resting on your middle finger. And never lift the saucer from the table. If you are having Royal Tea, Champagne or sparkling wine will be served along with the tea. There are more than 20 establishments throughout New York City that serve afternoon tea, in varying degrees of pomp and tradition. We present five of them here, with a longer list at the end of this article. Directly across from the Museum of Modern Art at 28 West 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan is the Baccarat Hotel New York. Reflective of the elegant Baccarat heritage, the décor includes a magnificent 64-arm crystal chandelier and walls adorned in silk. Champagne and cocktails are sipped from cut-crystal flutes or tumblers, and tea from fine bone china cups. The inventive afternoon tea service is inspired by several historical personalities long associated with the Baccarat brand: Tsar Nicholas II, a Caviar Tea for Two at Tsarskoye Selo; the Prince of Wales, an English Tea at Windsor; King Louis XV, a French Tea at Versailles; and the Sultan Abdülaziz, a Turkish Tea at Dolmabahçe Palace. The Prince of Wales tea is served daily; all other tea services are offered from Wednesday to Sunday. Ten blocks farther uptown on the Upper East Side is The Pembroke Room in the Lowell Hotel. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches replace the savories, and cotton candy is included in the sweets course for the children’s tea. Afternoon tea is served every day from noon to 4:45 p.m. We would be remiss if we did not include The Russian Tea Room in this list. Synonymous with afternoon tea, it’s worth at least one trip in a lifetime just for its Eastern European grandeur, forest green walls, and red-leather banquettes, not to mention its formal tea service. Located at 150 West 57th Street next to Carnegie Hall, since its founding in 1927 by members of the Russian Imperial Ballet, the four-story building features continental dining, party venues, a not surprising extensive menu of fine vodka, and an elegant, though non-traditional, afternoon tea. The menu is set, but the options at the Russian Tea Room are varied, and each course is served separately. There are five tea services to choose from: the traditional Russian Tea Room afternoon tea; the Royal Afternoon Tea, which includes Champagne; the Vegetarian Afternoon Tea; the Gluten-Free Afternoon Tea; and the Children’s Tea, for those 12 and under.

ACADEMICS OF ART

Students can pursue master’s degrees in art and the law and business of art at Christie’s Education, New York. The degree programs benefit from the art world expertise and resources available within and through Christie’s International auction house.

T

here’s an art to choosing the right place to master your knowledge of the art world profession. As one of the major art centers globally, New York City continues to be a popular destination to study art. And where better to pursue a career in the art profession than at the world-renowned Christie’s International auction house, sellers of fine art, art objects and collections. Located in Rockefeller Center, adjacent to the auction house at 1230 Avenue of the Americas, Christie’s Education, New York, offers two master’s degrees — one in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market, and the other in Art, Law and Business. Alumni have gone onto a variety of careers including curators, art historians, art dealers, auction house specialists, professional advisors and journalists. Some graduates have established their own consulting firms and galleries. Graduates say they especially love the class field trips to museums, artist studios and to Christie’s famous auction house. Christie’s Education is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education. “I never take for granted that I get to spend all day surrounded by beautiful art,” says Maeve Lawler, a master’s graduate from Christie’s Education and currently assistant to the director at Acquavella Galleries in New York City. Christie’s Education was founded in London in 1978, and it expanded to New York City in 1993. Christie’s Education, New York, programs focus on direct contact with original works of art, as well as contact with art world professionals. Students have had the opportunity to see notable works of art up close, including the Jeff Koons “Rabbit” stainless-steel sculpture, which sold for $91 million in May at Christie’s auction house. “New York is our classroom,” says Veronique Chagnon-Burke, PhD, academic director of Christie’s Education, New York. She adds that 84 percent of the 2017/18 class had a job within six months of graduating, and some graduates have gone on to fulltime jobs at Christie’s auction house. Both master’s programs run 15 months, starting in September with students graduating in December of the following year. The degrees prepare students, ranging in age from recent college graduates to 30

somethings to retirees, for careers in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors of the art world. Students also study the future of art, in areas including artificial intelligence, Dr. Chagnon-Burke says. Highlights of the two degrees are as follows: • M.A., Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market: Students learn to formally analyze works of art, understand the workings of an auction house, develop market research, understand art history and the market, and build networks, among many other related skills. Tuition is $66,743. • M.A., Art Law and Business: This curriculum focuses on how art, law and business influence the commercial art world. Students gain in-depth knowledge of art auctions, art fairs, etc., build art world networks, understand trends in contemporary art, and other skills. Tuition is $67,355. In both programs, students regularly tour the unique facilities at Christie’s and attend private lectures from Christie’s specialists, notes Noah Kupferman, program director of the Art, Law, and Business Master’s. “We put the right recipe together for students to get what they need educationally to join the art market,” Kupferman says. Both master’s feature a combination of lectures and classwork, guest presentations, workshops, field trips, domestic and overseas travel opportunities, an internship and thesis (capstone) project. There are 45 students enrolled in this year’s graduate programs. Alum Joey Quigley says he especially appreciated the sale previews at Christie’s auction house. He currently works for Christie’s, New York, as associate vice president, account manager, Estates, Appraisals and Valuations. “It was wonderful to get demystified, first-hand, access to remarkable art from some of the leading specialists in the field,” says Quigley about his time at Christie’s Education. Students can apply to Christie’s for tuition grants and scholarships. Christie’s Education, New York, also offers continuing education classes. More information about Christie’s Education can be found online at christies.edu. Christie’s presents about 350 auctions every year in areas including fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photography, collectibles, wine, etc.

I

t didn’t take long for Merle Martin to realize there was something special about Montclair, the town she called home for 30 years. “During our first week, my husband and I went to a movie theater with our new neighbors,” recalls Martin, who serves as office manager of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey (CIRE Northern NJ)’s new Montclair location, “and every other person who walked by knew my neighbors and said hello. I realized right away that you cannot go anywhere in Montclair without running into people you know. It’s not just a stop on the highway going from here to there — it has a real town feeling.” The close bond that exists between residents is noteworthy given the diversity of neighborhoods within Montclair’s borders. The town itself has

two zip codes, one for Montclair and one for Upper Montclair, with Watchung Avenue serving as a dividing line. “The town was established in the mid-1800s as a weekend getaway for industrialists,” says Martin. “There were big, beautiful homes on the mountain, with a train coming into town. Cobblers and other businesses set up shop, and other parts of town were established with smaller properties to serve the vacationers.” Today, the wide range of neighborhoods remains, including the Upper Montclair Village anchored by Montclair State University on the North End, the centrally-located Watchung Plaza, the mansions and stately historic homes of the Estates section, and downtown’s South End. “The South End is the best kept secret in Montclair,” says Martin. “The homes are small, but magnificent.”

ABOUT TOWN

Perhaps Montclair’s most unifying feature is its magnet school system, which provides racial balance and education equity in the public schools. The Board of Education developed specialized programs in each school to supplement the core curriculum mandated by the state and works with parents to place their children in the schools best suited for their needs. “You don’t necessarily go to the school in your neighborhood,” says Martin. “Beginning in kindergarten, Montclair students will meet people of all different backgrounds.” Among Montclair’s magnet themes are science and technology, university studies, environmental studies, the arts and global studies. A thriving arts community has been a staple of Montclair since its founding. The annual Montclair Film Festival showcases new works from American and international filmmakers, and the refurbished Wellmont Theater hosts renowned musical acts. Montclair Art Museum dates back more than a century and maintains longstanding relationships with local artists. “Montclair’s diverse and active community

Couper. The museum holds each of these artists’ works in its permanent collection, including an entire gallery dedicated to Inness’ paintings.” The Montclair Art Museum welcomes 65,000 visitors annually and recently introduced its Art Truck, a colorful studio on wheels that visits schools, senior centers, parks and festivals, offering community members who cannot make it to the museum a chance to participate in art projects. A popular landing spot for commuters, Montclair has six train stations, and DeCamp and NJ Transit buses that transport residents to and from New York City. Montclair’s own business community is a continued area of emphasis for town leaders. Downtown neighborhoods are stocked with abundant dining options, as well as popular chain stores and boutiques for shoppers. Development activity along the busy Bloomfield Avenue corridor is ongoing, with several major projects underway. Chief among them, says Janice Talley, Montclair’s director of Planning and Community Development, is the MC Hotel located at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Orange Road, which will include 150 hotel rooms, 13,000 square feet of office and meeting space, and 3,000 square feet of restaurant space, including a rooftop bar. “The hotel is located adjacent to the recentlybuilt Valley and Bloom project, which includes 262 apartments, 30,000 square feet of office space and 30,000 square feet of retail space,” says Talley. “Both projects are served by the rebuilt Orange Road parking deck, containing 614 parking spaces.” Also under construction is the arts-oriented Seymour Street project, which includes construction of two buildings around a new 14,000-square-foot arts plaza, and The Vestry, a 46-unit building located near the Bay Street train station. Montclair’s diverse housing stock, popular downtown areas, commuter-friendly transportation, magnet school system and culturally-rich activities make it an ideal community for a Christie’s office location, according to Juan Rivera, CIRE Northern NJ’s regional vice president for Hudson and Essex counties. “Montclair is a trendy and chic town with a lot of history and fair share of famous residents,” says Rivera. “The town’s incredible architecture and landscape resonates with everything that defines Christie’s — art, beauty and provenance. We believe homeowners will benefit from our marketing approach and the way we tailor our marketing program to each property, telling its story in a unique way.”

LANDMARKS & HISTORIC SITES Historic sites and landmarks are in abundance in Montclair, a town rich in arts and cultural history. The following sites draw multitudes of residents and visitors:

MONTCLAIR ART MUSEUM Opened in 1914, Montclair Art Museum is esteemed for its holdings of American and Native American art, as well as its exhibitions, family and public programs and its art school. The museum welcomes more than 65,000 visitors annually. VAN VLECK HOUSE & GARDENS A non-profit community resource, Van Vleck House & Gardens displays a public botanical garden of mostly ericaceous plants that has been developed over several generations. The display of rhododendrons and azaleas shows numerous hybrids, several named after members of the Van Vleck family. The property had been in the hands of the Van Vleck family until 1993 when it was turned over to The Montclair Foundation. ISRAEL CRANE HOUSE A Federal Revival-style landmark, the Israel Crane House has had three lives — as the Crane family home, a YWCA for African-American women and girls, and a historic house museum. The Montclair History Center was founded in 1965 to save the Israel Crane House, which is used today to tell the stories of all the people who lived, worked and played in the house. MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY Building on a distinguished history dating back to 1908, Montclair State University is a leading institution of higher education in New Jersey. Its nine colleges and schools serve more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students with over 300 doctoral, masters and baccalaureate level programs. WELLMONT THEATER A former motion picture theater that counted Thomas Edison among its earliest visitors, the Wellmont Theater currently serves as a concert and events venue with a capacity of 2,600. A partnership with promoter Live Nation has helped to attract world-class talent in a variety of genres. The venue is available for meetings, graduations, awards ceremonies, television shows, benefits, fundraisers, concerts and fashion shows.

VILLAGE OF SCARSDALE Newest Location of Christie’s International Real Estate WRITTEN BY BILL CARY PHOTO G RAPHY BY JAMES EMO LO AND CHRIS MARKSBURY

ith its top-tier public schools, 30-minute commute to Manhattan by train and spirited community-mindedness, the picturesque Village of Scarsdale has long been a top draw for well-off families searching for the best of suburban Westchester County, NY. With an average household income of $417,335, Scarsdale recently clocked in at No. 2 nationwide, behind the Silicon Valley town of Atherton, California, in the Bloomberg Richest Places annual index. Parts of Scarsdale, especially the estates in the historic Murray Hill neighborhood, are simply gorgeous. Grand manors from the 1920s and ’30s sit majestically in the center of two- to four-acre landscaped lots with centuryold trees and rolling lawns. Many have pools, ponds, formal gardens and tennis courts, and nearly all have been impeccably renovated with the finest finishes and craftsmanship. And this picture-perfect suburban image and lifestyle is reflected in the cost of homes in the village. The 2018 median home sale price in Scarsdale was $1.5 million, Andy Emery and the average was $1.8 million. In Murray Hill, Scarsdale’s oldest neighborhood, the median sale price last year was $2.8 million, with an average of $3.44 million. To take advantage of this strong real estate market, Christie’s International Real Estate of Westchester/Hudson Valley recently opened an office at 72 Garth Road in Scarsdale. “This is our initial office in the Westchester marketplace and we wanted to position ourselves in the center of the county,” says Andy Emery, Christie’s regional vice president and broker of record for the Westchester office. “And the Christie’s brand makes sense there. “Being in Scarsdale allows us to focus not just on the luxury market, but on the entire marketplace, including west of Scarsdale,” Emery says.

Reflecting its rich history that dates to the Revolutionary War period, the village has a wide variety of housing stock, including Colonial farmhouses, Georgians, Victorians and Tudors and, more recently, Mediterraneans and contemporaries. Scarsdale also has a terrific almost small town sense of community, Mayor Marc Samwick says. Samwick and his wife, Cynthia, have lived in the village for 22 years, having put their three children through the school system “from kindergarten through the high school,” he says. “I’ve coached over 20 Little League teams — and that’s normal,” he says. “My wife was very involved with the PTA — she ran the carnival at our elementary school. “We’re very well known for our schools and our easy commute to the city, and we’re very family-oriented,” Samwick explains. “What people don’t know is how community minded we are. “There is a great spirit of volunteerism in our community,” the mayor says. “It permeates every aspect of the village. We have about 150 people serving on boards and councils, all

volunteering their time.” Along with its attractive single-family houses, Scarsdale has a vibrant walkable downtown, with handsome Tudor buildings, galleries, gourmet food stores, flower shops, and book, clothing and toy stores. The village has a quite active Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Department, which manages a four-pool complex, 26 tennis courts, 10 neighborhood parks, five major playing fields and the Weinberg Nature Center. “We have tons of community activities, all kinds of activities going on all the time,” Samwick says. “We have concerts in the park on most Thursdays throughout the summer. We have a farmers market, we have an antique car show.” Emery, of Christie’s, looks forward to a strong future in Westchester. “In New Jersey, our company has grown from 11 agents to 400 agents in a short period of time,” he says. “We expect our business model to grow at the same clip in Westchester. “We felt it would be easier to reach all of Westchester, specifically southern Westchester, from Scarsdale than any other location in the county,” Emery says.

Tompkins, who was born in Scarsdale. HISTORY: The town was officially founded on March 7, 1788. During the American Revolution, the Continental and British armies clashed at what is now the junction of Garden Road and Mamaroneck Road. ary Jane Tarabocchia is the broker/manager of the Ramsey Office of Christie’s International Real Estate, Northern New Jersey. She has been a Realtor since 2004, and in the last 15 years, has gained a wealth of real estate knowledge and expertise, which she now brings to her leadership position. Earlier in her career, Tarabocchia held a position with a local real estate board, where she received a certification in professional standards from both the National Association of Realtors and the New Jersey Realtors. Tarabocchia has been successful throughout her career, earning a Top 10 salesperson designation. Although she is happy to have attained her broker’s license, she is excited to continue in her role as office manager. She covers 30-40 agents, and is also responsible for recruiting new agents to the office. “Although I enjoy all aspects of the business, I found my niche managing offices and assisting agents. I love ensuring that everything goes smoothly for both the buyers and sellers in a transaction. And I feel very lucky to be working for Christie’s,” says Tarabocchia. “My favorite moment in the process is after I have gone out with buyers, we enter a home, and I see on their faces that THIS is the home; I know before they even realize it,” Tarabocchia remarks. The Ramsey office services all of Bergen County and, in particular, the communities of Ramsey, Montvale, Allendale, Woodcliff Lake, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River.

Additionally, there will be higher visibility; there are 70 million viewers on the global website,” notes Tarabocchia. While the name “Christie’s” is synonymous with luxury, “there is no price point; we cover condos to castles,” says Tarabocchia. “We are able to help everyone, and everyone gets the

Christie’s experience—the highest level of service and name recognition in the industry. We believe everyone deserves the Christie’s experience.” Tarabocchia has lived in Ho-Ho-Kus for 35 years with her husband and three children. Her oldest daughter is now married to another Realtor’s son. She is actively involved in the community, supporting several causes. While her children were growing up, she was a tireless volunteer on behalf of the school system. In particular, she answered every call for help from the high school theater department. Professionally, she offers a wealth of information and years of experience as a Realtor and resident in Bergen County, as well as having a thorough knowledge about the real estate market and the industry overall.

arolann Clynes says she is thrilled to have been recently named to Christie’s Masters Circle, a newly launched program that recognizes its top 180 sales people in the world, but she admits to being a workaholic. “When you have a type A personality, it’s hard to relax and take time off,” she says. So, to schedule time away from work, which she acknowledges is important, Clynes commits to it. She and her husband plan a trip to Europe every year and once the airline tickets are bought, and the hotel is booked, she knows she’s committed and follows through. “It’s really the only way to get away,” she says. It’s the same strategy Clynes uses to pursue other activities away from the office. It’s why she accepted an appointment by the New Jersey State Senate to serve on the New Jersey Historic Trust when then-Governor James McGreevey nominated her in 2002. From 2006 to 2008, she served as chair of the Trust and was nominated to a second term by former Governor Jon Corzine and continued to serve for a total of 14 years. It was a cause near and dear to Clynes. “One of the loves of my life is historic preservation so my thought was, once I commit to it, I’ll see it through to the end,” she says. Other activities Clynes commits to include playing tennis, volunteering, and singing with a local musical group. She says she finds it all really satisfying. “It’s the commitment to things outside of work in life that keep me balanced and mentally healthy.” — RAJI RAJAN

onna Keena is a Jersey Shore girl. During the summer, Keena says she loves to go to the beaches along the Shore and dine at favorite and newly discovered restaurants and eateries while she’s there. When the weather grows colder, she keeps the warmth going by enjoying even more time with her children. Other activities she enjoys include hitting the gym and taking advantage of living so close to New York City, and all it has to offer. But, no matter where she is, Keena admits work is never far from her thoughts. “Even when I’m on the beach, or out somewhere, I’m always working, handing out my business card,” she says. And it has contributed to her success. Recently, while out socializing, Keena gained a client for whom she is now negotiating a multimillion-dollar project. It’s all in a day’s work — even on days off — for Keena, who has 13 years of experience in residential and commercial real estate. In addition, she holds the prominent Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation for completing enhanced industry education in financial and market analysis, and for demonstrated experience in commercial real estate. Another proud designation Keena enjoys is being the mother of a newly licensed real estate agent, as her son recently obtained his real estate license and joined her on the Montclair office staff. — RAJI RAJAN

His arrival there coincided with the beginning of his career in real estate. At the time, he obtained his broker’s license and began listing and selling some of the most valuable real estate in Snedens Landing, the Nyacks, New City and other parts of Rockland County. He was able to quickly develop a regular real estate clientele by capitalizing on his membership and experience as an Actors Equity member, acquiring many stars of film, television and theater as clients. In 1995, Sanders founded Sanders Properties, Inc. as an up-market boutique real estate firm. Nargis and Scott Rifflard (above left), and Colleen Spence (above right), enjoy the special time they spend with their families.

Working in real estate is a full-time commitment, and then some, for Nargis A. Rifflard, Realtor associate and leader of a three-person team that includes her husband, Scott, and fellow Realtor Colleen Spence. However, Rifflard is quick to add that her career allows her the freedom to juggle all that comes with being a working mom. She and Scott like to spend their time away from the office at the Jersey Shore with their two children — Julia and Brandon. During the winter, she is a dance mom and accompanies her daughter, a competitive dancer who travels a lot. In addition, Rifflard takes her son, who was diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy, to therapy after school to help strengthen his legs.

Spence also enjoys spending time with her husband, Balonde, and their three children — Terrence, Abigail and Benny. Since her children participate in school sports, Spence says the family spends most afternoons and weekends at various athletic events. Spence also is active in the community, serving as president of the women’s club and director of the residents’ association in the lake community where she lives. In fact, Spence says being active in the community helps her professionally in building trust and strong relationships with clients. And, since relationships are key in real estate, everything she does outside of work somehow ties right back into her profession. She wouldn’t have it any other way. The Rifflard Team operates out of the Franklin Lakes office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey.

Entertaining at home is a passion for Maureen Molé. So much so, she authored The Book of Entertaining at Home, which was published by Simon and Shuster. She also works her love of entertaining into her career as a Realtor associate, staying in touch with many of her clients, entertaining them at home, meeting them at restaurants and organizing restaurant crawls. Molé’s book-writing skills also led to stints as a food feature writer and a restaurant critic for local publications. “A highlight was interviewing three Michelin-rated chefs in France,” Molé notes. Further on the home front, Molé is proud of her daughters — an attorney, a professor and an interior designer — and six grandchildren under the age of six, with whom Molé recently visited Italy. The Mahwah resident serves as a Eucharistic minister at Church of the Presentation and participates in a monthly discussion group. Molé’s goal is to resume volunteering to prepare meals for the homeless. Molé is associated with the Ridgewood West office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey.

HOME LIVES

Melanie Campbell thrills audiences at concerts, local schools and even a few open houses with her professionally trained mezzo-soprano singing voice.

MELINDA GIFFEN FRATER

MELANIE CAMPBELL

Melinda Giffen Frater completed real estate school as a 17-year-old high school senior. “I was too young to take the licensing exam,” she recalls. She spent 20 years in the freight industry, obtained a real estate license in 2012 and became a full-time Realtor in 2015. Located in the Summit office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey, Giffen Frater is motivated by her desire to help people. “My goal is to make a situation work, whether it’s finding the right house or the right mortgage company.” This passion to help guides her personal life, as well. Giffen Frater is a Court Appointed Special Advocate in Union County, advocating for children who are in the New Jersey’s foster care system. She also volunteers for Special Times for Special Minds, a camp program that provides respite to parents of special needs children.

60

 

To her co-workers and clients, Melanie Campbell is a real estate professional based out of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey’s Hoboken office. But to avid music and opera enthusiasts, she is an accomplished mezzo-soprano who has established herself as a classical artist of depth, vocal power and stage presence. She received a bachelor of arts in music from George Mason University and a masters of music in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. She also lived in Germany for five years, receiving a diploma at the Franz Liszt school of music in Weimar, Germany. She has graced stages near and far with her vocal talents, including recent performances with the Virginia opera and the West Point Military Academy. After singing in a musical theater concert with Bravo Opera Alliance, Campbell has decided to venture into musical theater in September. Singing is part of her real estate career, as well. She has a motto of “singable properties,” presenting properties that have the things clients need to make them sing, and she has been known to sing at open houses. Raised in a family of accomplished athletes, she was an all-state shotputter in New Jersey and maintains a commitment to physical fitness. Among her favorite places to visit for music and leisure are Israel and Norway. Locally, she enjoys dining options in Hoboken and Montclair. “I’m just a people person,” she says, “and blessed to do what I love.”
