Transforming Lives Forever

Kurn Hattin Transforming Lives Forever A finger plunged for an instant into the ocean and then withdrawn, a yellow leaf kissing the granite boulder and falling to decay, a raindrop brushing a rose petal and mingling with the earth—each, you think, leaves about as much impression behind as you will leave when your life-work is done‌ But the end is only the beginning. Does not your work go on? Reverend Charles A. Dickinson Sermon, 1897, Founder of Kurn Hattin Homes

1

The Transformation Journey Kurn Hattin transforms the lives of children and their families forever. The transformation begins on admissions day. Children are immediately introduced to a safe nurturing environment that reinforces rules, provides consistency and offers opportunities with expectations. The transformation includes family intervention, as staff indentifies preventive measures for success, then acts accordingly. Generally with time, children respond to the program and experience success and greater self worth. Throughout their stay, each day presents some challenges and frustration. Staff educate them with new techniques facilitating appropriate response styles and habits. Expectations remain consistent and enhanced as the child develops. This allows each child and family the time needed to eventually reunify. As the time approaches to leave Kurn Hattin a transition plan is developed. School placement, family and community re-entry and therapeutic support is outlined. The child leaves the Homes with a heavy heart, but new skills, self worth, hope and our post graduate support system in place. The support system includes scholarships, transportation assistance, site visits, electronic and verbal communication. The final degree of success in high school and adulthood beyond the Homes is based on the individual. Transformation is only made possible by the continued generosity of our donors and the efforts of staff. Each donor and volunteer play an active role in fulfilling the mission set forth by our founder, Reverend Dickinson. We remain grateful and blessed to have such caring and generous individuals provide the resources for success. Thomas G. Fahner, Deputy Director

Kurn Hattin Transforming Lives Forever

History in Motion When you have accumulated three quarters of a century of memories, they vary in recall. Seventy years of my eighty three, excepting twenty five of Marine Corps service, have been indirect association in some mode with Kurn Hattin as a student, resident, part time employee, often a correspondent, Executive Director, Trustee and President. These memories are shared with my late mother, Lillian Maysilles, a single mother, live-in teacher at the former Kurn Hattin campus at Saxtons River for eight years. Additionally my wife Barbara, a teacher at the Westminster campus and as my helpmate, when I served in the roles of Executive Director, Trustee and President. In1976, approaching the end of my twenty-fifth year of Marine Corps service, I began to contemplate retirement. In June I received a phone call at Camp Lejeune from the Kurn Hattin Director, John Watson. He asked me if I would like to succeed him at Kurn Hattin. The timing was convenient and John and his wife Priscilla asked Barbara and me to meet them while they were in North Carolina, on a business trip. It was a mutual discussion, I submitted my resume and we were chosen to follow John and Priscilla. When Barbara and I returned to Kurn Hattin we found the situation to be somewhat static not by intent, but brought on by the Great Depression years and also by succeeding challenges for the nation by the demands of World War II and having to overcome the mind set, dictated by the foregoing. John and Priscilla had started Kurn Hattin in a new direction. Resources for a new horizon were arriving; finances were advancing. The computer world was also in its infancy. The pendulum had begun to swing to a higher plane. The national freeing of funds created more interest in philanthropy. Advanced education was more attainable. These new prospects held a stimulus for new goals, new challenges, new exploration, examination, and the vision and values a new culture had to innovate and improve services. The pending Kurn Hattin Strategic Plan holds the keys for the resolution of the many challenges of the present and the future. Barbara and I will maintain a close watch to share in advances to come. David J. Maysilles, President, Class of 1943

I realized after this trip to Kurn Hattin that my father grew up in a loving home with values, the discipline children need and the knowledge that they are truly cared for. The Kurn Hattin Home taught him how to be a good, responsible human being which makes him the man, father and grandfather he is today. For this, I am grateful. Just as abusive homes are perpetuated generation to generation, loving homes are also handed down through the generations. Sincerely, Jo-Ann Piro Buzzi, Daughter of Alumnus Joe Piro, Class of ‘39

Kurn Hattin Transforming Lives Forever

I am told you can never return to a place once you leave it, nor can you repeat your childhood. This may be true for some people, but not for me. I know I can always return to Kurn Hattin. Although the names, people and the buildings may change, the spirit and purpose and most of all the memories will never be changed or forgotten. I shall always keep with me all that I have learned and will cherish the fondest memories. Kurn Hattin was not an institution, but a home that will be cherished, loved and remembered. Jerry L. Bardwell, Alumnus Class of ‘73

Sustaining Forever

5

In 2012 the Board of Trustees focused their efforts toward strengthening the sustainability of Kurn Hattin for the future. In 2011 the Board set an ambitious five-year goal to reduce by half the amount of Board-designated funds (endowment) used to support annual operating expenses. This goal ignited a coordinated effort directed at four interrelated initiatives: managing our investments, development, enrollment management, and cost efficiency. Task force teams comprised of members of the Board and Kurn Hattin staff were formed, and together made significant progress toward achieving this sustainability goal. Our investment committee was strengthened by the addition of experienced and talented financial managers increasing our ability to adjust our investment strategy more effectively to changing domestic and global market conditions. A spending rate policy was implemented enhancing our fiscal discipline and accountability. The development task force conducted a comprehensive assessment of our donors’ perceptions of Kurn Hattin and gauged the receptivity to support a major capital campaign in the future. The feedback helped us to update our new strategic plan, revitalize our marketing strategy, and adjust our development resources to position and strengthen our fundraising capability. Accentuated by the depletion of federal, state and local budgets, the landscape for family and child services radically changed. Funding declined, facilities closed, and services dwindled while the need rose. The enrollment management task force carefully evaluated this shift and its impact on referrals and the acuity of children seeking our services. Our admission process is being adjusted and our exposure to a broader range of referral sources expanded. The cost efficiency task force assisted by Kurn Hattin staff achieved a reduction in our annual operating expense in the last two years of 3.2% under FY 2010 spending levels. We streamlined our services with the closure of Ball cottage and have created ambitious plans to generate new revenue sources and cost efficiency gains. The Board of Trustees has transformed its role with determination and commitment to achieve Kurn Hattin’s sustainability for future generations. We thank our dedicated and loyal donors, volunteers and staff for their unwavering support to Kurn Hattin’s mission. Please join us in this continuing journey. Together we will transform the lives of children and families forever. Charles P. Kelsey, President-elect

Kurn Hattin Transforming Lives Forever

The Support of Donors Transforms Lives A young boy of six skips across the dining room with glee because, just a few minutes earlier, summer education director Donna Fahner announced that during the afternoon the children would be playing Bingo. His older sister, also enrolled at Kurn Hattin, looks on protectively to be sure he doesn’t run into anyone, or anything! Gently, Donna places a hand on his shoulder and guides him to a seat. She encourages him to listen to the rest of the instructions for the day so that he doesn’t miss any opportunities for fun. Day by day, staff and volunteers engage in loving interventions and guidance to help children achieve success. Each child arrives at Kurn Hattin wondering just what is in store for them in the next year or two, or perhaps longer. At the same time, their family has reached out to us for help-the kind of help that Kurn Hattin Homes has offered for almost 120 years. The kind of help that will transform a life. Last year, donors across the country continued the legacy of sharing their resources so that young children and families could find just this kind help, and hope. In a time when confidence in the economy continues to falter, Kurn Hattin’s benefactors gave over $1.3 million to the Annual Fund, well surpassing the goal of $507,000. This generosity, combined with newly created charitable gift annuities of $274,358 and trusts and bequests exceeding $600,000, positions Kurn Hattin to strengthen its reserve funds by providing outright support of critical operating needs. In 2013, Kurn Hattin will launch a major marketing initiative. This effort will not only enhance Kurn Hattin’s exposure to new and existing audiences, it will set a course for Kurn Hattin which will help to determine when a major fundraising campaign can be undertaken. Private support is the backbone of the Kurn Hattin mission. Over 95% of our operating budget is made up of contributions from donors. Thank you for the gifts which transform the Kurn Hattin mission into reality, and create a sustainable future of service to another century of children in need. Connie Sanderson, CFRE, Director of Development and Public Relations

Report from the Financial Manager With uncertain times in the economy and investment markets, Kurn Hattin had several positive financial developments in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2012. Most notable is the continued financial support from donors with over $1.3 million in contributions during the year. On the expense side once again staff worked hard to keep overall spending below budget by 2%. The investment last year in a new heating system in Mayo Memorial Center, combined with a mild winter, resulted in considerable savings on fuel costs. The new farm program launched in the spring and summer of 2011 provided organic produce for the kitchen resulting in lower food costs for the year. Total fixed assets, net of depreciation, is $4.6 million as of June 30, 2012. Capital investments during the fiscal year included a major electrical renovation project in the school building. The $30,000 project was funded in part with a grant of $10,000 from Efficiency Vermont. This should result in energy savings of approximately $5,000 per year. A technology enhancement project was begun in Fiscal 2012 to connect all the cottages to Kurn Hattin’s network. A new student information system, to be implemented in Fiscal 2013, will now be available to all houseparents in the cottages, as well as to teachers and administrative staff. This system will replace a number of manual record keeping and reporting processes. As of June 30, 2012 invested funds total $41.1 million. It has been a volatile year in the stock market. Kurn Hattin’s total fund was down 2.9% for the twelve month period. The Investment Committee met five times during the year, working with our investment consultant Prime Buchholz to make sure that our investments are well positioned for long term growth. Stephen R.
