2016 ANNUAL REPORT
SUCCESS. When we read or hear that word each of
us conjures up a fairly distinct image of what it means. Steve once worked for a supervisor who had a clearly defined idea of success for himself—he knew the size of the house he wanted, the number of rooms, the construction materials, etc. He knew the type of car he would drive and the other “toys” he would own. “Success” for him was an abundance of consumer goods. A friend in graduate school viewed success differently. She envisioned a type of work she wanted to do and a relational lifestyle with which she wished to surround herself. She viewed success in terms of career fulfillment and meaningful relationships. Both of these people seemed to have “success” figured out for themselves. We have encountered countless students during our years in education, and most of them, when asked, could relay some vision of their versions of success. Each vision was different, unique to the individual, and widely varying in what the concept of “success” truly means. Over the past several months during our strategic planning, we at Kurn Hattin have been discussing what success means for us as a residential educational organization and for our students, graduates, staff, and families. What has become abundantly clear is that there is no single definition of success that works in all cases. For each person, the path to fulfillment and satisfaction looks quite different from all of the others and may include any (or no) combination of continued education, finding rewarding employment, living independently, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, finding a mate, starting and caring adequately for a family, acquiring possessions, living in a supportive community, pursuing enjoyable activities, and so much more. On a daily basis, we help each child here find his or her own small successes that we hope will eventually accumulate and grow into much larger successes later. From learning multiplication tables to knowing how to
operate a cider press, from learning correct fingering on the clarinet to sinking a free-throw in basketball, from making a bed each morning to supporting a friend appropriately when he or she is feeling down. These are all examples of small successes that our children work on daily. In essence, these are the true transformational components of life that we talk about in our Mission. Additionally at Kurn Hattin, we have identified a number of factors that look like success to us, especially those of financial stability and transparency of management. Our Charity Navigator 4-Star rating is an indicator of that type of success. Consistently ending our fiscal years with operational expenses below budgeted amounts, admitting a full enrollment and maintaining a high census throughout each year without having a large wait pool of children, and graduating students with good skills and high quality preparation who go on to function very well in their successor schools are all indicators of success here. There is still a lot of work to be done. We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of long-standing donors, volunteers, and staff, and we welcome more people each year to this vital and phenomenally gratifying work with children. Thank you for joining us in our work of transforming children’s lives forever!

SUCCESS. We all seek it. But how do we define it?
In the Development office, we gauge success in many ways. There are financial goals, of course. Professional and ethical standards to maintain. Staying in touch with members of our extended family and keeping everyone informed. Working together as an integral part of the Kurn Hattin team. But our truest measure of success is the children. When they succeed, we have succeeded. When they become the people they want and ought to be, we share in their accomplishment. These past twelve months have been full and wonderful. Among other achievements, we are proud to have earned a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charitable organizations. This honor comes as a result of Kurn Hattin Homes’ sound fiscal management practices and a commitment to accountability and transparency. Our many supporters can feel assured that their gifts are being put to use effectively and responsibly, doing the good they were intended to do. A note accompanying one recent gift said, “Kurn Hattin education is multi-faceted, thought-provoking, and unending.” It went on to laud our finding a worthy Executive Director in Stephen Harrison and voiced confidence that we would continue to do good work for the children.
4
Our staff and volunteers are passionate about inspiring and helping the children to realize their full potential. Everyone shares responsibility and strives to live in accordance with our values. Acclaimed poet and writer Maya Angelou believed that success is about enjoying the work we do. Ask anyone here. We live and love our work. When Development staff visits friends and supporters, we often hear, “You represent Kurn Hattin well.” This personal connection—getting to know the many supporters of the Kurn Hattin Mission—has been a priority since our founding.
In our children, we see success every day. They go to school. They do their homework. They are kind and respectful. They handle a difficult situation with aplomb. They master a new skill that had eluded them. They seize an opportunity to help someone else. They are happy. “I was nothing but an unhappy shell of someone who could be awesome,” said the 2016 Valedictorian. “I started school here and I was actually excited to go to class every day.” And we hear about success from our graduates: “One of the main reasons I went to Kurn Hattin was due to the problems I was having in school—not studying, getting poor grades, having discipline issues. It was the foundation that Kurn Hattin offered, which set the wheels in motion for me to make good decisions versus bad decisions. I knew what it felt like to let people down and to let myself down. And I didn’t like it.” “Thank you for providing me with a chance to succeed in life. Very possibly, I would not be who or where I am today without your help.” Every member of our extended family shares in this success, none more so than the supporters who make it all possible. We get a lot of gratification from seeing the children grow into their potential. And we share in the responsibility to give them this opportunity. Our continued success is dependent on annual and special donations, as well as inclusions in Wills and Trusts. When our donors give from their hearts, when they steadily increase their giving as conditions allow and invite their friends to do the same, this remarkable success is sure to continue. We can all be proud of our part in it, as we work together to transform the lives of children and their families.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE FINANCIAL MANAGER Fiscal 2016 was a good year for infrastructure improvements and advances in our technology capacity. There were a number of enhancements to the campus including paving of the upper parking lot, replacement of the Butler and Morrison cottage roofs, repairs to the Mayo and Mathey building roofs, new carpeting in the school music room, and renovations to the Tackaberry and Wilson cottages. New signage bearing the new logo was installed at the entry to the campus. We implemented a new web-based accounting system that allows budget managers to access their financial information online at any time for more informed and timely decision making. The fiscal year ending June 30, 2016 was successful with respect to the operations of Kurn Hattin. Collectively budget managers underspent the budget by $291,000, or 5.4%. Overall expenses were $25,750, or less than 1%, above Fiscal 2015. As the table on the opposite page indicates, 93.6% of the funding support for the residential and educational programs is through charitable sources of revenue. The support from annual giving, trusts, bequests and the endowment are all important elements of this funding. As noted in the table, endowment investment income and allocations amount to 70.2% of the total source of income for Kurn Hattin compared to 52.2% % in Fiscal 2015. The endowment fell off significantly in Fiscal 2016, posting a -5.5% investment return for the year compared to a return of -1% in Fiscal 2015. As of June 30, 2016 the endowment value, net of allocations to support the operating budget, stands at $43.2 million. As we look back at the programmatic success in 2016, and the smooth transition in leadership, one cannot help but believe that Kurn Hattin is poised for continued success in the future. We need the help of our donor community, however, and growth in our endowment to sustain this effort.

Thanks to all of you who have supported Kurn Hattin and have been part of this community that makes such a difference in the lives of the children who pass through our doors.
