DID YOU KNOW THAT SALARY WON’T MAKE YOU RICH?

D

O YOU KNOW THAT SALARY IS A BRIBE TO FORGET ONE’S AMBITION? It is a short-term solution to lifetime problems. Research had it that the poorest groups of people in the world are Salary earners, next to beggars. They live in a vicious cycle of poverty, managed on 30 days. Salary is continuously being awaited every month and any slight delay brings about heartbreaking anxiety, pressure and disappointment you agree right.

A

dvocate A Marara once said, “a salary is a token of appreciation for helping someone to achieve his vision” Salary is a short-term solution to a life time problem. Salary alone cannot solve your money problems. You need multiple Sources of income to balance. The tax return form contains about 11 income streams, of which salary is just one. Don’t live Life fishing with just one hook, there are many fishes in the ocean. Salary is the medicine for managing poverty, not to cure it. Only your business or investment cures poverty. Most investors are not salary earners. The difference between those beggars on the street and salary earners is one-month salary. Truncate the flow of their salary for one month and you would realize that majority belong to the lower class. If you divide your salary by the rate of exchange, you will discover that you are poorer,

relative to when you started work. Your worth is far more than your salary. Salary is the value someone has put on your effort. How much do you value yourself? You can’t increase in value, unless you value yourself differently. Life is a tradeoff between time, effort and reward. To be rewarded more, you have to become more valuable. Most salary earners end up poor in the long and short term. I therefore urge every one of us to be : INANCIALLY INTELLIGENT, FINANCIALLY LITERATE and OPEN OUR EYES TO SEE OPPORTUNITIES IN PROBLEMS. Delve into entrepreneurship because salary is a lifetime disappointment. Being a salary earner or investor is a decision. Life Will not change until you decide. Make the move! Someone said, “Salary is a bribe to forget one’s ambition.”

The fast lane to success

D

o you want happiness, health and wealth? All rolled up in one. Super success. That kind of success where you get social recognition and live life on your terms. Where you can afford to fly daily to Johannesburg just for breakfast. Now, let me warn you, that kind of success has got nothing to do with being intelligent and there is no job out there that can guarantee you that bounteous level of success. It takes a completely different route, which starts by understanding something called CALLING.

lady picked me, much to the delight of the clamoring audience who enjoyed my every line. From that very day, I took Public Speaking seriously and it has paid my bills, opened doors of opportunities and brought me happiness beyond my wildest expectations.

When I started out, like any other ambitious young man, I wanted to be filthy rich. As such, I took the wrong, most common route, that of chasing money. Choosing a profession because I thought it would pay me a lot of money. With time, I got to realize that chasing money is one of the most backward approaches to being successful that I’ve ever known. You will never be happy. Your Iife will be a burden , with only one fulfilling day the whole month called payday.

There is a place for each and everyone of us in this world. A place that you are supposed to fill that no one else can ever fill. Something that you are supposed to be doing that no one else can do. That’s the only thing that can bring you happiness, health and wealth.

Discovering your calling is simple. Just ask yourself, what is the single thing in life that you love to do...... which you also know that you can be the best at doing?

Dr Albert A. Michelson was the first AmeriYour calling is your God given assignment on can to win a Nobel Prize in science. When he was this planet earth. I couldn’t wait to get up like you are playing when you are performing it. in the morning! I never thought of it as a science”.

I bumped into my calling of Public Speaking by accident. I was invited to a Toastmasters meeting at Crown Plaza Hotel as a guest. During the impromptu section of the meeting, five guys were randomly picked from the audience and brought to the front (me included). An insanely gorgeous woman was brought to the front. Each of us guys was asked to say something persuasive for two minutes to that lady in front of the audience. After our presentations, the lady would pick the guy who impressed her most. One by one, the other fellas dropped all sorts of adjectives and phrases to please the lady. When my turn came, I did the unthinkable. I looked at her straight into her big brown eyes as I licked my lips. Then dropped my verses, which sounded more like lyrics straight from John Legend’s upcoming single. I enjoyed every moment speaking in front of strangers. I literally swept that lady off her feet with my speaking prowess and spiced it up by literally giving her my business card asking her to call me later. At the end of our presentations, without any speck of hesitation, that

I actually spoke about this last week on my KBR chats on social media. I train young ladies at Valbeaut Image Consultancy to discover who they are, own it and run with it. The problem today is we always want to be the next person and never ourselves. Issues to do with body image, beauty, complexion and attention from the opposite sex are the main causes. I studied this as well in my degree in Women’s and Gender Studies. What is interesting is that all those things do not really matter in the long run. Young lady, we need you. Your time is now. Remember to be the best version of yourself.

The

Voice that speaks for a purpose

Janet Manyowa

J

anet Manyowa is a multiaward-winning gospel musician based in Harare Zimbabwe. Her passion in spreading the word of God makes her music extend a deeper and relevant meaning in people’s lives. Her Song Ndomira pamuri made waves all around Zimbabwe and it surely made a lot of people feel drawn to Christ. You can never believe this but Janet at 13 wrote her first song called “Mubatsiri” and little did she know that God had bigger plans for her in the ministry than just singing in the shower! Janet Manyowa’s voice is well appreciated, her singles and videos topped charts on the local gospel scene and paved way for her to be awarded as the Best Female Musician in Zimbabwe according to the National Merit Awards (NAMA) 2018. Apart from having a very wonderful voice Janet has a very good welcoming personality that makes everyone around her feel more accommodated. Check out her answers in the recent interview with Christine Nhamo.

Ndimi is a song that appreciates God for who He is to me and every believer across the world. The song describes God as the Almighty and Glorious creator of heaven and earth, He who reigns forever and ever, the one who is capable of turning around any situation. We often times, as Christians find ourselves neglecting giving praises to God and only coming before Him with complaints and to ask for God’s favor and blessings. Ndimi seeks to do that which we were created for – which is to praise the Lord, just or who He is.

Your Background Should Not Be The Reason Why You’re At The Back

born in a low-income family or the so-called “Being ‘unsuccessful’ family is something no one can be blamed for, but living a mediocre life carries personal responsibility.

H

uman beings have not been given the privilege to choose a family to be born in. Had there been such an opportunity, families of the so-called successful like Bill gates, Strive Masiyiwa, Zuckerberg or Aliko Dangote would be the most overpopulated. However, I am glad that the future is hidden in each and everyone in the form of a gift or a skill. The Biblical proverbs made it very clear, “A man’s gift will open a room for him to sit amongst the kings of this world.” Therefore, success is not a chair reserved for the sons and daughters of the rich by those that are ready to unleash and maximize their potential. The story would not have a good foundation if I cannot butter it up with my own story which I think would be exemplary to the subject above. The life story of Charline Prazen Chikomo ( Duce of Africa) can never be explained exclusively from dropping out of school, homelessness, hunger, and starvation failing to afford my education, or uniform to wear, hit by the reality of life, abandonment, and the pain of poverty, going to school with only three things with him: oversized trousers that will become a symbol of identification for a long time, a cream shirt rather than a white one that was required, and a big dream in his head that scares him every night. For many at that time, his look was a sight of laughter, just as bullying, rejection, and isolation became things that he would have to confront day by day. But with ideas in his head, a dream insight, and a purpose to drive him, he persevered through all that life had to offer him, and out of that laughter and document, isolation and bullying came a mountain of strength, courage, and motivation. At this moment, many would think the boy I am talking about is either Barack Obama or Abraham Lincoln, our president, or some members of the parliament. It’s none of them. None of those you see on TV but that same boy in the name of Duce of Africa, Mr. Chikomo. I can recall the days I used to settle for less and using my life as an excuse for not making it. I became so comfortable with failure because all I would do was to blame everything on my background and other people that were not treating me well, just as I got

satisfied with occasional, minor achievements like getting 14 Units as my grade 7 results, yet it was not even a pass. In 2014, however, I made a turnaround decision that my background is not the reason for me to be at the back or an excuse for failure but as the chief reason why I should be more severe than anyone else. I managed to come out in the top ten for the first time, got 7As and Bs at an ordinary level, and finally 20points Advanced level with all the As. I also pushed myself that I found myself in the Junior Parliament of Zimbabwe, pushing the agenda of the young people. Coming up amongst the highest, I opened my organization Duce Tutoring that works on educating those who cannot afford through seminars and scholarships. I also began the Duce Leadership Initiative, which is a platform where young people discover, develop, and unleash their potentials. I have also managed to conduct more than 150 seminars in and outside Zimbabwe, not to mention the books that I have authored in a bid to solve the problem of textbooks in the country and inspiring young people to unleash their potential. The truth of the matter is that no one wants to listen to the story of a person who is not successful, so we ought to be prosperous. We are living in families that are not economically stable, which means many times things won’t be as rosy as we might want them to be, but that should not stop someone with an appointment with the future. We ought not to forget that the loss of a battle does not signal the end of the war. Therefore, what our parents failed, we ought to overcome. If I did it, it means anyone can do it. Because of my background, none could ever imagine that one day I could be as motivational or found an organization that would give back to society in Duce Tutoring institute or unleashes his potential as an author. I hence highlight that the same story that I was mocked and isolated for is now the one that is my unique value proposition, an opening for me, and a stepping stone to those that I impact towards vast opportunities.

A Talk with one of the Young and best Motivational Speakers Charlene Chikomo

Q Mr. Charline Chikomo what is it that you do everday that helps you stay focused and inspired? What is your unique value proposition? t’s more of what I have been through and who I am than what I do daily to keep myself motivated. I have been through some of the most challenging times in life that I can always say,” Forward ever backward never.” That forms the more significant part of my source of inspiration, for the idea is still to change my life for the better. My life is something that the majority of Zimbabwean and the African child share, and that has made me so relevant in the market for I do not speak something from the books but that I know and no one can take that away from me. It also goes to my ability to turn my mess into a message and my tears into a testimony that is more, I am a very spiritual person, and I strongly believe in God’s plans upon my life than what people say. Therefore, I do not care about all the negative energy from the people, nor do I get easily carried away by the kind comments from people. I care much for competence and influence than I do with popularity. Not forgetting the fact that I do not get demotivated by my failure for, “Loss of a battle does not signal the end of the war but is a step towards success.”

I

Q Congratulations on your published books, can you tell us a little bit more about what you really

write about and what in- more, interestingly, I know and enjoy doing. Fear is the spired you tostart writing? not the day I shall breathe language of the weaker. Never

I

never dreamt of myself as a writer, nor even am I the most qualified person to write. However, when it’s necessary, and when the socalled most qualified are not doing it, we take up the initiative to help our people. It all started during my primary education in Gutu at Shenjere Primary School. The shortage of textbooks was one of the biggest problems in rural communities. With that being said, I had an opportunity to go to the urban areas where there was still a problem of textbooks but far much better than the rural areas where 50 students could read one book. Having managed to get 20 points at my advanced level, I started to write textbooks. I wrote Advanced History Level 1 and 2 as well as Family and Religious studies handouts. The idea is all about helping the students not to face the same problem we faced. The generation before us did a lot for us, so we are duty-bound to help the age coming after us. The Duce Tutoring theme is, “Educate them to educate others,” and that is precisely what we are doing. I am working on many motivational books like “An appointment With My Destiny”, “Unquestionable Dominion”, Trusting The Process”, and “Start Before You Start”. The idea is to continue to inspire the generations to come and remind them that the good things that they want are all hidden inside them. Even

my last breath of life neither will I go to all the places in the world, but my books shall live forever, and they shall go where I can not go.

be afraid of failure. Start and take your failure as a lesson. A journey of a million kilometers begins with a step, the sooner you take the first step the better. Last but not least, have a vision. Life without a vision is like a car without a handle, it can move, but it’s uncontrollable. You can live without a vision, but you will lack authority over your life.

Q Charline, most young people nowadays are lost in the system, they don’t know exactly what they want in life. What’s your advice to young people out there who are scared to materialize their dreams? Q Where do you see yourhe only thing to fear is self in the next five years?

T

fear itself. People do not invest in people or give attention to people, but what is in them. Anyone who needs someone in their business or life requires nothing but what they carry. The problem of many young people is trying to fit in instead of being unique and trying something new. We need to think outside the box. There is a lot hidden in us, and that is why we need to discover it rather than just joining races already started by other people. To all the young people out there, start your race that you understand and invite them!! You are the one the world has been waiting for. Necessity is the mother of invention, and there is nothing that can be created without a purpose. It is the purpose that gives birth to creation. Meaning to say, before you cry for a seat on the table, try to find out if you can not create your schedule. The young people are all confused because they do not understand the system. It’s time to create things that we know

T

he next five years will mark eight years since we started DuceTutoring. We pledged to make sure that every year we impact the lives of 5000 young people. Therefore in 5 years, we are expected to be not only the most popular organization but also the most impactful organization with the membership of around 40-50000 members. The idea is also to create an academy that is going to be teaching the youths the 21st-century skills so that instead of producing more job seekers, the youths can start to think of creating their startups. Instead of learning theories and numbers, the youths should begin to learn more about the skills that can help them to survive in the African economies. Personally, the idea is to be one of the most exceptional speakers, authors, community leader, and a role model to many. I do not just want to be famous, but effective.

An Exclusive Talk with Bevan Makanaka

Hello and good day to you Mr Bevan. Which daily principles or habits that keep you focused to being this successful? Wake up at 3:45 am every day mainly because in the morning it typically means you’re less prone to distractions because most people just don’t like getting up early, hence I am automatically more productive. I get to focus on the priorities that move the needle before all the chaos of a normal workday comes. I make sure that I start the day with prayer because when you give God the best part of your day, He will take over the rest of it, and time you spend in God’s presence will never be in vain. I proceed to read four chapters of the bible and do my devotion for an hour the important thing about morning devotional prayer is that you start your day in worship. Setting aside time for a personal moment with God, especially in the morning before going about your day, allows you to get that moment of connection with God. I do gym and workouts for an hour normally between 5:30 to 6:30, catch up with emails, WhatsApp messages, trying to figure out if I’m up to date with the latest news and information so that I can upgrade my performance by embracing new ideas, knowledge, and skills.

young entrepreneurs are not so sure how the market will treat them. Out of confusion, they ask questions with no solid, reliable answers, how long will my business exist? How profitable will the business be? Will customers like the product? Will I be able to give myself a steady pay check? Young entrepreneurs must know that in every story there are many winds to contend with, but before your journey as an entrepreneur, you have to observe the wind detect the direction then follow it. Entrepreneurs are brave people that influence a stable and growing economy, for this reason, young people must become relentless to embark this journey of entrepreneurship with commitment and an acute vision such that even if you are running a small business and you don’t have a lot of customers you want to cater for these few as though you have a lot of customers, even though you don’t see any returns instantly your vision must be that of exceeding the expectations of your clients. The biggest mistakes that young entrepreneur make is that they want to start big, they don’t set realist goals or assume they don’t have enough resources to start a business my word ‘Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can”, follow your passion money will always come, don’t take a no for an answer, you don’t need to focus on swag and waste resources on Mr Bevan, I understand you’re into designer clothes, chains , pleasing the the Youth Empowerment through en- streets and friends when the business trepreneurship endorsements. works, what’s the whole motivation behind giving or helping people? believe I want to continue turning stones, I have not yet reached a tenth of where I want to be yet, I want to leave no stone unturned, there still is more to come. Because to discover more you have to leave no stone unturned. I believe in helping others because I find joy in doing so I’m not the owner of my resources I’m just a steward, for as long as God is still blessing me I will continue to be like a pipe that carries water to where it is supposed to be I believe in the process it gets wet too, I take care of Gods business and he takes care of mine, it’s very hard to love God and not love his people. Stewardship is the use of God-given resources for the accomplishment of God-given goals. You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.

Which three things do you wish you had known when you were still 20? ’m now 33 and I would want to admit that I have learned a lot and experienced much from when I was 20. Well, I wish I had added more focus and had listened to the voice of God more. I wish I had appreciated the value of the time I wasted more time chasing trends in fashion, expensive designer clothes this leads me to the third point that I wish I had known the importance of saving money and investing. I have learned that if you start investing early you will have various choices of investment alternatives to choose from as well as better alignment towards goal-based planning and that my advice to young people

The Angelic Voice Everytime when I just want to find a peaceful moment with myself, I put on my earphones, close my eyes and press play to ‘Murapi song’. This song is majestic, it makes me feel goosebumbs deep inside me. It opens all the wounds and heal them at the same time. I cant find the right words to explain how my spirit is moved by this song hence I took it upon myself to search for this amazing medium who was used by God himself to heal his lost and forgotten children. The Gospel Artist behind this song is a beautifu, humble, virtuous young woman who blew my mind from the first conversation with her enriching talks. During an exclusive interview Petronellah Sengwayo said,

“Well truth be said, ‘Murapi’ is a song I dreamt about a few months before the pandemic and I remember waking up not understanding why God was giving a song which sounded like a prayer by a sick person when I was not sick. I didn’t sit down to write it, I only released it now because the world needs healing now. I just wanted to remind us that there is a healer who is readily available and all we have to do is call on Him and Believe for all things are possible for those that dare to believe. So the inspiration behind releasing it now is to encourage all of us to call on Him and be saved as it is promised in Romans 10:13 that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. With that being said this song is serving as a profession of the redeeming power of the blood of Jesus Christ during this Covid 19 Global pandemic.”

# Hi Petty, so it’s part of our culture as Zim Influencers Magazine to start with this popular request, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and what exactly makes Petronellah Sengwayo this unique and amazing figure?

S

o Petronellah is a female who’s passionate about praise and worship. I started singing in church at seven and never stopped.

# Petty what really inspired you to get into music, was it the angelic voice or there is more to the backbone?

M

usic is a part of me, I was born singing haha well not literally but it’s a gift I was born with. It’s the reason I’m still alive today.

# Petty the ‘ Murapi’ song sent waves all over social media, its literally stuck on replay every morning when I woke up. In your own words what’s the real meaning of the song?

S

o this song, Murapi is a prayer for healing from the Devine healer. It’s an encouragement to all who need healing physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally to call on Jesus Christ, the ever present help in time of trouble. It’s also a reminder to all believers that we overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony!

# Petty do you think it’s easy for young women to establish themselves in the entertainment sphere, what challenges are they facing?

I

t’s easy in my opinion because there’s a void and hunger for more women to occupy that space in the industry so all we have to do is occupy. It’s also difficult given the roles society expects us to play.

#How can one contact you for a blessed enriching performance or speaking?

F

or bookings you can contact me on my Facebook page@ Petronellah Sengwayo/ @ Petronellah and Instagram page @Petronellah... Don’t forget to visit my YouTube channel @ Petronellah Sengwayo and subscribe as well

The Idea Of Flying Dazzles My Imagination

Meet Seth Van Beek, a boy who can fly.

W

hen we go out looking for Young Phenomenal Zimbabwean Influencers, we search for the young and vibrant, people who are not scared to dream big whilst buried under horrible circumstances. We look for people who defy gravity, people who know what they want from life and are willing to fight head on until they acquire their rightful inheritance. Meet Seth Van Beek a young phenomenal man who defied all odds and became the youngest pilot not only in Zimbabwe but globally at large. He didn’t allow his roots to define his destiny. While his age mates were busy chasing paper planes, Seth made a vow to himself that his best gift for his 18th birthday would be an authenticated Aviation License. Seth grew up in a normal household with a strong single mom who stood by him and supported him in every way possible. His mother allowed him to dream and according to Seth, she still remains his biggest inspiration. This young genius has made headlines and he surely has become an inspiration to many young people in an African community. At only seventeen Seth already knew that he was destined for greater heights, he was determined and focused to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. Standing in his shoes and coming from a third world country where such dreams are deemed unrealistic by the society, I am surely blown away by the level of dedication this young man has. Seth beyond doubt has brought hope to a native child. During an interview Seth told us about how he became really principled from a young stage in life and also knowing what he wanted to achieve in life, made it easier for him to fight off peer pressure. Seth Van Beek got his license to fly passenger airliners after completing 18 months of training and 150 hours in the air before he passed with flying colors. Seth was born in 2001 and in 2010 he moved with his family back to

Zimbabwe from London to pursue his education. He did his Primary School from grade 4 to 7 at Christian Brothers College in Bulawayo. In an exclusive interview Seth shaded more light on how he participated in many multi-cultural activities in school and he strongly believe that had a greater role in building his passion and desire of becoming a pilot. During his aviation Course, Seth admitted that he was the youngest student and being around old grown people forced him to mature really fast. He became determined and focused than ever and he always got motivation from his other colleagues. Curious to know what really drives Seth to dream so big, he responded from a point of humility and said, “I believe that country or location should never hinder anyone from trying to achieve their goals or dreams because many great people have not come from favorable backgrounds. If you never try, you’ll never know, so if you give up on your dream because you feel at a disadvantage you’ll never know if you would have achieved it If you had just pushed that extra bit harder.”

Interview with Seth Van Beek Youngest Zimbabwean Pilot # Seth what really inspired deck? efinitely people will get a sense you to become a Pilot and of nervousness if they see a what was the whole motivation young person flying such a huge airbehind this dream?

D

A

craft, its only natural, But I believe that flying is a skill and it doesn’t necessarily mean that an older pilot is better or safer then a younger pilot and no matter our age we all go through the same training which ensures that a certain level of competency has been achieved and that our knowledge and aircraft handling Is at an above satisfactory level. Throughout our training we are always reminded that safety is the most important thing when conducting any flight, so as pilots safety is our main priority in any flight operation. # Seth which principles or

viation has been a passion from a young age for me, and I always wanted to find out how a “large metal tube” manages to stay in the sky for such lengthy periods of and this curiosity helped to fuel my desire and passion for aviation. Also I had always wanted to break a world record and I found out that this was possible in aviation hence why I started the training so early in order to achieve one of my life long goals, I would say that in everything I do I am very goal oriented.

# Seth what’s your advice to a young person out there stuck in a third world country but still believes in their dreams to become one of the most recognized individuals in their area of expertise?

core values do you live by ev# Well I realized that you speak ery singleday? believe that country or locat the centre of everything I do so many languages, what realtion should never hinder anyone ly triggered your interests in is my religion which is chrisfrom trying to achieve their goals tianity and I try and do everything languages and how has that or dreams because many great peoIn a Godly manner, but I also stick become a plus in your career? ple have not come from favourable

I

A

I

really enjoy interacting with people and learning about different cultures, this was the main thing that helped me to learn many languages, but as a child I traveled alot with my family and I found it beneficial being able to communicate with the local people in their language and it will also help me to understand their culture more. It has been very beneficial in my flight career being multi lingual because being a pilot is not only # Seth Since you are one of about communicating in the cockpit the youngest pilots this world with the other pilot but there’s pashas ever produced, don’t peo- sengers and ground crew, in certain ple get nervous when they circumstances or occasions it may be more effective to talk to them in realize that their lives are in their mother tongue in order for the the hands of a 19-year-old is flight to be conducted in a more efsitting right behind the flight fective manner.

by two main principles in life which are that in everything I do I remain integral and humble, for me humbleness is a very important factor of life because I believe that everyone is an equal and no matter where you are in life you should treat everyone with the same respect whether it be your boss at work or the person who cleans the offices after everyone in the company has gone home.

backgrounds, theres an old proverb that says “if you never try you’ll never know” so if you give up on your dream because you feel at a disadvantage you’ll never know if you would have achieved it If you had just pushed that extra bit harder. In everything you do always give of your best whether it be on the sports field or late at night preparing for the exam you have coming up just give it 110%, also success is determined by what you do when no one is watching and success is a mindset not a title. Personally theres a bible scripture I stand by which says “seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you” and I believe in my success it’s all by the grace of God.

DJ Music

T

anaka Marimbe who is well known as DJ Tannieswiss is a phenomenal young gent who has defied all odds in the music industry. He has surpassed people’s expectations and is working hard day and night to remain the best. Tanaka who is only 27 years old has managed to establish himself in a fabulous way adored by many as long as his career is concerned. This talented young man is not only an all-night long DJ, he is also a Graphic Designer whose experience is beyond doubt. In an exclusive interview, Tanaka admitted that its all as a result of hard work and he urges other young people to do the same. Tanaka is a mainstream house DJ. What makes his sound unique is his ability to incorporate a house vibe with all the other genres at the same time. He is very much invested in the trendy Amapiano genre as well. Some of his mixes has given his brand a lot of recognition internationally and has been aired in countries like South Africa and in the UK. In describing his journey and inspiration in the Music and Arts industry Tanaka had this to say, “I grew up loving music. I mean it goes as far as the times of Walkman’s and portable cd players. I used to have collections of mixtapes I recorded off radio shows and concert replays. When I

was 18, I got discovered by a DJ called Mfalmeh who was at one of the parties I was djying at. After observing me for a while he came up to me and he was like, “you know your music, come and let me show you the ropes”, and that’s when things blew up for me. He invited me to watch him and he was kind enough to introduce me to his crew, popularly known as “THE MOVEMENT’. There was something about the way they played that confirmed my love for music. From there I started getting a few gigs here and there. I worked on my skills and I was being mentored under the best. When I went to university in Australia my whole perspective of djing completely changed. I was scouted by a very popular DJ in Perth who goes by the name DJ Gabbs. He gave me quite a number of gigs and my audience was loving it beyond any doubt. Upon Coming back to Zimbabwe, I met Reverb 7, RayDizz, Tbass , Selekta Base & RAX now these people really pushed me to the limits in terms of perfecting my performances, branding and marketing myself. And Here we are.”

djtannieswiss

#

Tanaka for those that are really curious, what really inspired your stage name?

I get this question quiet a lot. Well TANNIE – is just a shortened version of Tanaka and SWISS comes in as the metaphoric word that that explain my design style ( Classy ).

Interview with DJ

So, we are in the middle of appreciating our moms, what 2 things have you learnt from your mom and you cherish so much? God First Hard work always pays off

#

Tanaka can you please share with us some of the achievements you have done so far?

So, there are people with an organic talent and then there are people who work really Ok I haven’t really achieved a lot (as much as I want to) but here goes (Starting with the most recent): hard to learn new things, which one are you when I am averaging about 3k streams per mix on the major it comes to your career?

I can honestly say I’m a bit of both because naturally music has been in me from the beginning but for me to get where I am was a combination of blood, sweat and tears. I had to learn the industry the easy way and the hard way all the same time. I mean there are times when I played for waiters and chairs and I had to go to the drawing board to reset and start all over. But with each failure that came, a new skill was learnt, advice was given, the craft was perfected!

#

Well, putting music aside, you have a great sense in fashion…what’s your secret and does appearance really matter in your area of expertise?

Behind each and every artist there is a group of people who put in work for your image to be topnotch. For me I have brands like PAZ N CHIVS , Nehanda & Co who dress me for my big gigs. They do everything from Clothing to accessories. In this industry, appearance is everything. Each event should have a different outfit which compliments the theme. I mean sometimes I perform wearing overalls and kicks (something unique and most likely to not be worn by someone else in the club haha) + plus its mainly for the GRAM.

#

stream sites with one of my AMAPIANO APPRECIATION VOL.3 hitting 11.1K streams on Soundcloud. The mix was then Featured on South Africa’s booming radio station VOW last week Wednesday. I also performed with these DJs at the respective places: Pariah State Borrowdale ft Djembe Monks 2015, Victoria Falls Party Bus 2019 with Dj King Her, Resident Dj with #The Movement (Current), Resident Dj at Evitro ( Current ), Resident Dj at Star Fm ( Thursday Slot with Dj Mox ) Current ( Mixes being sponsored by Astra Paints & Plascon ) (Current), RSVP To Events Evolution ( Cassper Nyovest & Prince Kaybee show 2018 ), Club 1+1 2016- 2017, The Establishment Halloween party 2016 ( hosted by The Circuit Party ), Golden Pilsener Afro Fusion Concert 2016, Resident Dj at Newscafe Borrowdale 2015-2016, Club Ora Opening night 2016, HIFM (Harare International Food & Music Festival ) – Dj Battle 2016 finalist vs Dj Dawee ( Germany ) I later on went ahead to win the dj battle aganist Dj Dawee (Germay) hosted by #The Circuit Party, The Hidden Bar (Australia) 2014.

#

What is the typical process of preparing for a gig physically and mentally?

A lot of people think that DJs just collect music and

Tanaka, can you shade more light on how far they go play the music in their library all night. It’s not your influence has gone. Who else have you the case if I may say. There is a whole process that goes shared the stage with apart from Zimbabweans? into preparing for a gig.

I have a wide range of audience both locally and on the internal platform. With my mixes on most of the major stream sites ranging from Apple music, Spotify, Tidal you name it. I have managed to gain a variety of international followers too.I mean I have had celebrities like Sbahle Mpisane Posting about my mixes. I have shared the same stage with Dj Dawee (GERMAN) , Bucie, Prince Kaybee , Cassper Nyovest (SOUTH AFRICAN) & Shash . Yet to share the stage with Black Motion.

My motto is always, ‘Practice practice and practice some more’. When you are behind the decks there is no trying new things, analyze all the tracks and make sure they are the correct length and they actually play. Make a playlist which goes with the theme of the concert or night. Always have a back-up playlist and practice your set transitions. The mental part, for me, is basically making sure I’m at the venue an hour or so before my set and analyze the type of crowd and the general vibe of the place. With that information I can be able to determine the playlist I will use for the night.

Everyday I wake up, look in my mirror and remind myself these important life quotes “That which does not kill us makes us stronger” by Friedrich Nietzsche and ‘’You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it’’ by Maya Angelou. Defeat may make you weak but Getting back up strengthens you. I neutralize the negative but release most things positively.

L

ife, this is something that some may like or hate. Causing many to commit suicide, with the rest to party until the sun doesn’t shine. We can lose hope for most things, but with hope we can live a better life. Some say the sky is the limit, but with God, anything is possible and as my headmaster always says, “Success is just an attitude.” Purpose, we have one to be amazing to some and remain with that gift of inspiration for the rest. Only God is the way, The Truth and The Life. Such words must not be forgotten but instead, sent to all, chose happiness over sadness and hope over despair. It is not over until it’s over and winners never lose in the same way losers never win.

I have presented motivational speeches for both of my high schools despite fear of large crowds & my stammering. My 1st jaw surgery 2009, with my 2nd in 2010 as well as eating from one side of my mouth as a result. Recommended by staff, they said, “ Do you want to write

your exams after just having surgery?” I persisted for my sake & my friends. Failing most of my exams I passed the rest with better results, with English & English Literature above 90%. In 2013 I received a lifetime achievement award for all my efforts despite my challenges, trials & tribulations. My father passed away from leukemia, however, came a dream, with bright light, and my father in the garden. He told me to take care. Opposite him was God on his throne, made of gold, he told me not to worry & he will always be with me as God is with us. At High Achievers College, I started a Leo club from scratch. During 2014 – 2015, and my epilepsy condition is worsening with a noticeable decrease in my grades. As a result, further tests and medical help (South Africa). In 2016 an incident where a seizure resulting from fading, landed me in ICU, basically numb in my legs, walking as if I was a 90-year-old. A Jaw replacement followed a few months later & More of these seizures occurred (between one and three). Three years with no school were filled with abnormal pain from jaw exercises, I returned to school for a Hotel management course at a Hotel School (IHS) in SA. During one episode I had 7 seizures, the most I’ve to date, yet I still live. with two stints at 3 & 5 Star hotels I got experience as a Front Desk Operator, Barman & Waiter. (The Hardest Working Person). Present day, I’ve had 4 seizure free months. Despite all my problems, God has been there day in day out. Built upon losses & pain but in the end there’s a rainbow after a storm, showing the start of a new day.

Upcoming Masterpiece By Marshall Shonhai

A

fter spending 13 years in the wedding industry and having survived well over 300 weddings I can safely say that I finally understand my purpose and calling. I have grown, I’m more mature and wiser now and have gone on to realize that my wedding planning passion is not just about the wedding day itself but the couple’s marriage, it’s no longer about posting nice pictures of the beautiful couples and the exquisite decor on Facebook and Instagram. I’m now more interested in my couples beyond their money, and them being just another “couple” I have worked on, I actually want them to do well, I want them to succeed in their marriages. That is why my focus for all my new couples is now motivated by the mantra; Beyond the Wedding Day or The Wedding Day and Beyond.

and destructive. I would rather have them invest in their marriage than in a lavish day, my generation and the next need to come to that realization if any of these marriages are actually going to last or stand a chance at all. This book is not just about the nice and beautiful things that weddings are, it is a very practical and realistic book that is the hook that is my theme, reality over fantasy. The Marshall Law is not your typical “how to plan your wedding” book, neither is it some holier than thou, cheesy, phoney marriage counselling book, it is much more than that. This book is a revolutionary and radical take on Zimbabwean marriages in the 21st century; it seeks to influence culture by daring to question and challenge some of our long-standing traditions and norms.

In my upcoming book, all that stuff about gowns, flowers and cakes is tucked away somewhere in the middle of the book, these are some of the very last things I talk about, boring right? I know, but there is some reasoning behind it all. There are a lot of books out there that are only about flowers decor, gowns and cakes and honestly, there is nothing wrong with that, I’m just deciding to be practical and relevant to our every day living with this book, nothing else.

This book seeks and aims to address us as Africans in our “Africaness”, diversities and realities, it is a book that strives to find the delicate balance between Zimbabwean marriage traditions, Christianity and the modern-day wedding trends. Many times as Africans we try to live a life of pretence where we deliberately ignore or choose to forget who we are and where we come from. So before we dive into the niceties of wedding planning, I thought, how about we get real with each other first? How about we address some real critical issues affecting us as ZimI have found that there is actually need to warn some of babweans regarding marriages and weddings? I’m excitthese couples that there is a whole marriage waiting for ed about this book and can not wait to share it with you them beyond the wedding day, yes warn them because all. the euphoria of the engagement, finding a wedding dress, rings venue, decor, cakes, the whole planning process and having the wedding itself can be both distractive

Dreadlocked boy toy

or a people, that was once under oppression, Of course, we grew numb to the dreadfulness of chains and locks, Even our choice of hair design became a clear indication of how long you can dread a black man and still not break him, we are strong, But lately, the dreadlocks, have become jokes, that no outsider can understand, For they are inside, jokes, My people are under a lockdown, and required to stay at home, A plague, has contaminated the streets, You don’t know who has the disease, So to keep the distance, you have to stay indoors, Pray, read, or listen to some hip hop, I miss going school, But who is to blame? Some say WHO, This is the end, What is the truth? I miss church, They say go on Facebook, I question my worth, Because I don’t have bundles, I don’t have data, I’m not lazy, I’m a hardworking Rasta, I put in the work, I read the Bible, my covering is on point, you can ask my barber, But with the situation at hand, I could use a shave, and maybe sell these dreadlocks, I could trim down my beard and be the goat in my family, that puts food on the table, I almost sold my soul, when a woman in my neighborhood wanted sex in exchange for a handout, I said almost but y’all know how that turned out, This is the dilemma young entrepreneurs are facing, because our business models were hand to mouths, And that required us to go out, But because of Corona, we can’t anymore and hunger has found refuge in our homes, In my society, fatherhood has become a hand me down, My dad has a way of looking at me like he is now my son, I sleep out, And come back in the morning, He opens the gate like a toddler expecting toys, He knows I have sausages. He grabs the sausages. He shows my mom the sausages. He shows my sister the sausages. The family is happy; That is how life has been like under quarantine. I’m a boy toy, exchanging sausage, for sausages. To survive. @heyheypreacher
