This month the magazine has a great selection of companies who have impressed us during the last few months.

HOME & TOP DRAWER KICK-START 2013 BUYING SEASON Top Drawer and Home kick-started the 2013 buying season on an optimistic note, hosting the largest number of British and international design-led brands in the shows’ history. Testimonials from buyers at the event provided evidence to this effect, praising the innovative and commercial design on display throughout the halls.

INCREASED INTERNATIONAL APPEAL The international profile of Home and Top Drawer continues to grow with an 11% increase in overseas buyers. The collocated events secured the attendance of key representatives from some of the world’s leading stores attracting buyers from over 57 countries. Representatives from La Rinascente, MoMA New York, Anthropologie USA, Mitsukoshi Japan, El Corte Ingles Spain, Crate & Barrel and Bloomingdales were all in attendance, highlighting the importance of London as an international buying destination, and the demand for British design amongst the world’s most influential retailers.

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BUYERS FLOCK TO LONDON Similarly, the domestic market was well represented at Home and Top Drawer. Final visitor figures ended on a par with those of

2012- with approximately 14,000* retail professionals. (*subject to audit). VIP buyer attendance saw a healthy increase representing a who’s-who of retail, including Selfridges, Bentalls, Fenwick, John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser, Oliver Bonas, Utility, Achica, Amazon, Paperchase, Fortnum and Mason, Liberty, Conran, Heals, Divertimenti, Monsoon/Accessorize and JOY and many more.

Claire Gaudion: Contemporary Yet Nostalgic...

Claire Gaudion Scarves have an emphasis on pattern, colour and texture. Recently described as ‘contemporary yet nostalgic’, there is a story to each of these geometric designs which are inspired by the dramatic and changing coastline on Claire Gaudion’s home island of Guernsey.

Claire Gaudion’s design process has a dual starting point, drawing ideas of form and colour from Guernsey’s seascapes and headlands, whilst also exploring ideas on a hand-loom; weaving different structures and exploring how colours change as they are interlaced together. The designs are then re-worked digitally.

All the scarves are printed in Britain, onto selected luxury fabrics to enhance the characteristics of the designs, and are then hand finished.

This new label has been well received by customers, buyers and press, and was awarded ‘Best New Product Fashion’ at Top Drawer, London, January 2013.

Beamers Designs is a long established Herefordshire company that has been making a wide range of wooden fretwork products for the craft and gift industry. Over the past 25 years many bespoke products have been made for large high street stores as well as the smaller boutique shops and galleries.

Jane Bannon Field and Fur Canvas Art: Debut Success!

Field and fur from Jane Bannon was started in 2012.

Jane had been producing original water colour paintings for a variety of customers prior to this date and her paintings have been sold worldwide. Due to the many requests for similar repeat images, the need for prints on paper and canvas was born.

Field and Fur, offers a range of traditional mounted prints in two sizes 20”x16” and 14”x11” and canvas prints are available in 14”x10” on a gallery frame with either a white background or NEW for 2013, the Notting Hill Canvas Collection, on muted colour palette or for the more adventurous there is the extra vivid Mardi Gras collection.

Home Show Review - Top Ten Exhibitors Twisted Twee: Best Gift Of The There’s ordinary and then there’s extra-ordinary… and at Year 2011 and 2012!

Twisted Twee has been creating cheerfully demented homewares, children’s wear and pieces of practical lunacy for parents since 2002. It has won several awards for it’s products including Best Gift of the Year in both 2011 and 2012.

At this year’s Home Show, Twisted Twee featured it’s popular and ever expanding range of Headcase pillowcases. These cases, inspired by joke shop ephemera, have a head outline printed on them, around which all manner of daft things occur. The head is shot through with arrows, or has an axe poised above it, is surrounded by writhing snake hair, or sprouts antlers. Mitas & Co: Showcasing The Talents Of Emerging Artists Mitas & Co. has been created to showcase the talents of a cadre of emerging young artists, illustrators and designers from British universities.

Anyone putting together a room scheme will appreciate the tantalising variety of design styles in a set of coordinating colourways which span designs by Mitas & Co.’s ten designers. The entire collection, which is printed in the UK, is available as printed linens suitable for curtains, cushions and light upholstery. The majority of designs are also available as wipeable wallpapers.

While working in an interiors showroom on the King’s Rd in London, Rachael Mitas, the founder and managing director of the company, met many talented graduates with little to no prospect of employment in their chosen creative fields. Mitas says of her new venture: “I wanted to create a showcase for young artists, illustrators and designers that would also grant a steady revenue stream to facilitate their further creative endeavours.” She further adds: “Mitas & Co. was formed and to this end, rather than the industry standard of a one-off payment, designers receive royalties for every metre of fabric and roll of wallpaper we sell.”

Thornback and Peel: Beautiful, Outline Works: Best Product Intricate Screen-Printed Pieces Award 2013!

We are delighted to award Thornback and Peel with the Prestigious Top Twenty Company Award for their spectacular products shown at the Home Show, Earls Court.

Juliet Thornback and Delia Peel met in 2003. Whilst retaining their day jobs they embarked upon their first collaboration, a series of handprinted clutch bags. They set up a studio in 2006 at Cockpit Arts, London. A year later they established Thornback and Peel to create beautiful, intricate screen-printed pieces for the home.

They soon emerged with their signature style. Inspired by imagery that plays on artistic traditions, they combined modernist geometric patterns with 19th century wood engravings. Their work is an eclectic mixture of Victoriana, Mrs Beeton’s household management, Mr McGregor’s garden, 17th century microscope imagery of the natural world, Norfolk and Devon. Thornback & Peel is a celebration of the quirkiness of British humour & design.

Spring Fair Show Review - Top Forty Exhibitors Spring Fair International bucks the high streeT gloom companies who participated at Spring Fair, making it one of the most important retail trade shows on the international calendar.

Spring Fair International, organised by i2i Events, opened on February 3rd 2013 at the NEC and welcomed over 68,116* visitor’s, including more than 5,000 international buyers looking to export British goods abroad - with overall visitor numbers up 6% on last year. Buyers attended from leading independent retailers and all of the UK’s major stores including Selfridges, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Hamleys, Harrods, Liberty, Tesco and Marks & Spencer were well represented.

Spring Fair offered Europe’s largest presentation of trend-driven gift products to a market that is hungry for newness and originality. Around 300,000 new launches were showcased by 3,000 exhibitors operating across 13 different market sectors.

The signs of economic recovery were indicated by the Spring Fair Retail Barometer, the show’s own major industry survey, which revealed that 82% of retailers are forecasting growth in 2013 and an improvement in consumer confidence.

The positive atmosphere at the show bodes well for the retail trade in 2013 and beyond, demonstrating the resilience of our nation’s shop keepers and their determination to breathe new life into the economy in the year ahead.

The Hospitality show was a great success for Valera. Having recently joined the Unitech Industries Group it was a great opportunity to wave the flag for the newly formed partnership. The quality and quantity of sales leads were very strong despite the adverse weather.

We even managed to sell a sizeable amount of equipment off the stand via distributors of ours.

Fagor cooking equipment including the new Advance Combi Steam oven, 900 series gas burner, boiling pan and also Advance Dishwasher range were displayed. A lot of interest was shown in our Jordao Counter Solutions, coffee bar counters, patisserie counter and also a Scaiola dessert display.

Valera had quotations and CAD designs being created on the stand. Projects for kitchen designs as well as front of house counter solutions were being quoted.

Staff from our Sales, Service & Logistics team were all available to answer any questions asked by both our distributor partners and end users. Overall, it was a great success and we will definitely consider doing this show again.
