CDNMK ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 15’ By Christopher David Ng Man King
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Throughout a vigorous and fruitful journey in Architectural Studies, I have been able to appraise the world in a forth dimension. The enjoyment to look around of what surrounds me provides a stimulus towards the contextual features and the sense of place. These features allowed me to keep growing throughout my journey, hence permitted me to ameliorate my sense of art through a defined context. Contextual Architecture can be expressed in various ways such as the respect towards the physical aspect of it as well as its Genius Loci, which narrate history through a defined context and emanates mood. Alongside various explorations and design proposals conducted throughout those three years spent studying architecture, I came across various deductions throughout my previous designs that the sensitivity towards a certain context and the sense of respect is highlighted as similar points in most of them. Thus, it guided me to discover my sensitivity towards contextual architecture as for belief that none can exist without people. My definition of contextual architecture would mostly be categorized as “Architecture for the People”. In terms of Philosophy, it always comes to my ideology of putting the people forward as no architecture may survive without life. Architecture is given life by the people occupying it. Contextual Architecture may merely result in a combination of geometric volumes and a set of universal standards and requirements, which might seem predictable by many, but once induced with a sense of respect and humanity, it turns out to be a product of humbleness and balance towards both the People and its defined neighbors. Henceforth, the deduction rather than a conclusion towards my concern and dedication to Architecture would be cited as “The Love for Humanity”. I certainly believe in Contextual Architecture as being a fabulous type of architecture that makes people dream through an outstanding architectural fabric and highlights memories. My “Love for the people” makes it a motivation for me to keep advancing in this direction.

“ In Architecture, ... This Fantastic World rich in fantasies and perceptions, you never know what’s in front, but you can make a difference by exploiting your ability to think beyond present and make a difference ...
“ Architecture... is then among the most important arts: and it is desirable to introduce taste into an art which shows so much. “ Thomas Jefferson

SEMESTER 2 DESIGN STUDIO: TEA HOUSE
CULTURE OF TEA DRINKING During the whole journey of this project, the goal of it was to create a series of spaces to satisfy man’s want and need but most precisely to enhance once’s contextual experience through a series of comfort. By inducing in the residential factor, the task was to come out with innovative form design including conventional spaces. As the essence of this project was to translate the Pakistani Tea Culture into a concretized architectual language. The Design process constituted into translating this ritual as the focal point of this architectural realisation. Following up with the fact that inducing this culture only wouldn’t make this design convincing, materials such as gravels, concrete and timber which are most commonly used into the pakistani architecture were also introduced into the design. Coming out with a finished product, was born a fusion in between contemporay architecture and pakistani architecture. April, 2009

“ A place where culture and health are brought together... “
November, 2014 Urbanism has brought us ease at will and has deprived us of our traditions and culture of before. Jalan Tun H.S Lee used to be a street of wealth and activities. The Design focuses on the past herbal and medicinal practice exerted in the 20th Century around the street. The programmatic configuration of the design has for mission to generate nutritional control and well-being to the neighbouring categories of people, counting in Students, Office Workers and the minority of tourists passing through the street. Based on a concept which consist of allowing the visual permeability to its optimum through the Site. The concept consists of mirroring the Circulation at Ground Level through several Elevations in order to create a Parallel Circulation look-alike. The Market Place specifically targets the various practice of Herbes and
Local Groceries through Food and Beverages as well as the body wellness. The Supporting Programme which allows the cycle of the Main Program me to perform well is based on Urban Farming. The Crops are delicately monitored through their growth process in order to ensure the nutritional qualities for the consumer. The herbes for the Tea Processing and Herbal Spa are also grown through the Crops located at the Roof Garden Area of the East Wing. The building contains five different levels, each of them induces themselves with an activity related to herbal and medicinal practice. The Ground Floor serves for purpose to welcome the people through a cultural and heritage trail by allowing Artisans to perform their arts with herbal and Medicinal products. Thus, on the second floor, the consumption trail of the vegetal products is provided through the induction of a Herbal and Medicinal Market. The Third Floor and Forth Floor locates the Food Plaza

and The Therapeutic Spa which uses Herbal Products to exert body treatments. Concept-wise, the timber fabric used as façade breaks the flow of the rigid street façade while conserving the proportion of the street through the geometric windows. The façade smoothen the atmosphere of the street façade as well as allows a sense of sustainability in the context. The façade acts both as a shading device and as an external insulator which filters the air-flow through the building, thus maximizing natural ventilation. The brick surfaces of the building reveals the traditional essence and the rustic feel of he past and a sense of sorrow in the design. The materials also contributes in the circulation flow of the design and the smooth and calm feel of the traditional Herbal Tea practice.
“Food as a source of life, Culture as a reason to live,... It has been making people happy since the dawn of age...

SEMESTER 6 DESIGN PROJECT: HARMONIC BODY ART CENTER
“ FLESH AS TOOL ”
HARMONIC BODY ART CENTER July 2015
IMPERFECT SYMMETRY Imperfect symmetry is an illustration of our daily environment. Even though people tend to think that there is a lot of variations from day to day saying that not every single day is the same, still we tend to have a blind eye on the fact that life is a period of evolution and at each period we tend to live in circles. Perhaps, the human being tends to be good at revolt, and the imagined fluctuation creates an assymmetry in our inner self. Perfection ain’t real, imperfection creates resolve. LIFE IS A MYTH...
