PUBLIC ART TO CONTINUE GROWING THROUGHOUT DOWNTOWN SPRINGFIELD AND BEYOND

If you’ve wandered around Downtown Springfield lately, you might have noticed some new public art pieces that have popped up on building walls and planter boxes.

In the past few years public art has become more of a staple of the atmosphere of Downtown and throughout the city as a whole, and it continues to be at the forefront of plans moving forward.

Springfield’s Public Arts Committee was created by the Greater Springfield Partnership and includes a diverse group of local artists, cultural non-profit leaders, City officials, foundations and businesses.

Collectively, the group works to recognize how arts contribute to the quality of life in Springfield and help make the city more vibrant, more attractive, and more livable, says Marta Wojcik, the executive director of Springfield’s Westcott House, who is one of the active members of the Public Arts Committee.

When the committee starts planning for new public art, they typically focus on one new project at a time, she says.

Wojcik gave the example of the Greetings from Springfield mural, which was supported by the Springfield Foundation and the Young Professionals of Greater Springfield group actively fundraised to make it possible. And Project Jericho, she says, seeks grants to support public art while involving local youth to execute the projects.

In 2020, Wojcik was able to secure various federal and state grants – on behalf of the Westcott House – from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Ohio Arts Council to support the works of the Public Art Committee.

The funds will support the groups public art strategic plan and engage three or four local and national artists to create permanent works of public art.

“So, it’s a combination of local investment and state grant funding (that supports our public art),” Wojcik says.

Determining which art will be added next is both a complex and collaborative process, she says.

“Currently, we are very focused on the Downtown area, but our hope is to grow this program and bring art to all parts of our community,” Wojcik says. “Fortunately, most of the property owners realize that the art increases the visibility and value of their property.”

The most recent major public art addition to Downtown is the mural comprised of a collection of out-of-this-world creatures that was painted on the side of the Bombshell Beauty Parlor, 20 W. Columbia St. The artwork isn’t as traditionally “nice” or “pretty” as some of the other murals and art pieces throughout Downtown, though it is attractive, interesting and full of color.

“Public art, in particular, is important because it is accessible to everyone, and it is highly visible at all times,” Wojcik says. “The more public art Springfield has, the more we demonstrate to our citizens that there is willingness to invest in and celebrate our community.

“And to the outside world of visitors, potential investors and businesses looking to relocate,

it shows that we understand the key components of what makes a community a successful, thriving place.”

The new “alien” gives people something new to investigate as they explore Downtown and something different to choose to interpret. It was created by artist Steve Ehret, who has also created public art in Canton.

Ehret was sought out specifically and funded by the grant because of his expertise in public art.

Some of the other public art throughout Springfield is selected from pools of local artists who submit their art and public arts committee members vote on the final selections. Some of those pieces can be seen wrapped around utility boxes – for example – hanging from utility poles and around planter boxes on City Hall Plaza.

Wojcik says the future of public art in Springfield continues to be discussed as part of the group’s strategic planning process. And, she shared that the grant funding will be used next year to engage two nationally recognized artists to create more larger-scale murals in Downtown Springfield.

“We are also looking into the possibilities of bringing more three-dimensional art installations,” Wojcik says. “We wish to continue featuring local talent and celebrating local artists.

“Springfield is lucky to have many remarkable artists who truly embrace this community.”

In addition to its accessibility and use as a civic engagement tool, Wojcik says public art is a community asset for so many reasons.

“It’s our way to support local artists and makes Springfield a desirable place for artists to live because we demonstrate that we value their creativity,” she says, adding, “It boosts the local economy, it enhances the quality of life and community pride, and it helps celebrate our cultural heritage and history of our place.”

A cluster of mansions on the eastern side of Springfield once home to some of its most prominent residents. Ohio’s oldest trout stream is the Mad River. Stocking of this river began in the late 1800s with the introduction of brook trout. Then in 1884, rainbow trout were introduced to the stream; and in 1931, ODNR switched to stocking brown trout in the stream. Today the stream is stocked annually with 6”-8” brown trout to supplement the population. Fly fishing is good on the Mad River, as there are good hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, and other popular trout foods throughout the spring, summer, and fall months.

GROWTH OF INDIECRAFT MUSIC FESTIVAL A DRIVER FOR TOURISM, CONTINUED EXPANSION

With the third IndieCraft just about two months away, the wider reach of the once one-night indie music and craft beer festival can be felt in the expanded venue space, the sought-after talent and the buzz both among the Greater Springfield community and people from other cities and states.

“When we first started talking about IndieCraft about 4 years ago, we wanted it to be like the idea of South by Southwest in Austin … that was always our template,” says Chris Schutte, vice president of destination marketing and communication for the Greater Springfield Partnership. “We didn’t want to charge because it was a test template. The first one was a one-night event, and about 2,500 people showed up at Mother Stewart’s.”

Last year, the event expanded to add a second day and add musicians to Mother’s new outdoor stage. The crowds didn’t slow, and according to Schutte, having bands like Motherfolk and other indie favorites on the rise continued to help draw people both locally and from other cities.

And the momentum pushed organizers to take another step forward this year.

IndieCraft 2022, presented by Benjamin Steel, will see the addition of a third day, an added location, and a headliner who named Springfield among its list of other tour locations that include stops at major musical venues and festivals, such as Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta.

The event will take place Friday through Sunday, May 13-15, at both Mother Stewart’s and at a stage being designed for the COhatch Springfield alleyway.

“There’s a ripple effect – or you could call it a domino effect – when we’re booking these outside artists, it gives validity to the music scene in Springfield,” says John Kelly, downtown events coordinator for the Greater Springfield Partnership. “It really highlights Springfield’s receptiveness to new music.”

Guided By Voices will lead the charge as a ticketed show Friday night at Mother’s, with the tickets being necessary to control the crowds in case the weather doesn’t cooperate, Schutte says.

The original 400 tickets to the show –costing just $10 a piece – sold out quickly when they were posted a few weeks ago. But, Schutte is hopeful that another 100 tickets will be able to be sold if good weather looks promising as the event gets much closer.

By selling tickets, Schutte says the Partnership was able to track where some attendees will be coming from on IndieCraft weekend, adding that there are many ticket holders from other states, including New York, and people who have reached out from Georgia with interest in additional tickets.

“When people are coming to Springfield for something like this, they look up other amenities, too,” Kelly says. “They’re not

just coming for one event. They come to shop and dine and spend their time here. Maybe they’ll stay at a hotel and take time to visit the Westcott House or the Hartman Rock Garden.

“And, when they go back to where they’re from, they become an ambassador and an extension of further positively promoting Springfield and what we have to offer.”

Schutte says those positive interactions and perceptions are the goal not only for guests but also for performers. He says there were bands seeking to secure a spot at IndieCraft and that the bands the Partnership sought out had heard positive things about the past events.

“This is a natural jumping off point for us if we are going to become a regional destination music festival,” Schutte says. “The model in our mind is that we want to continue to expand. We want to expand to National Road Commons and continue to add venues.

Benjamin Steel has stepped up to be the festival’s major sponsor this year, and Schutte says that for the event to continue growing with the same momentum, it will take other local companies to invest in financially supporting those efforts.

“If we want to really make this a community event and not have to sell tickets to every show, sponsorships are what (IndieCraft) will continue to require in the future,” Schutte says.

Kevin Loftis, co-owners of Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company agrees.

He says with places like the brewery and COhatch taking a chance on events like IndieCraft are what’s needed to continue expanding.

“There’s a big expense to these things, a big overhead, and we have to be able to reach beyond our regulars,” Loftis says. “Not everything works, but we’re always open to try. Making these investments pays off in other ways, like putting us on the radar of numerous booking agencies.”

And he says it’s all about striking a balance of being able to attract the bigger acts, while still finding ways to afford them without having to make every weekend a ticketed event.

“For us, we’ve kind of found our footing in a music and event-driven existence,” Loftis says. “We by default have become an eventdriven craft brewery. It’s been great working with the Convention and Visitors Bureau … and getting into heavier events now.”

“This year, COhatch will have its own stage. Next year, we would like there to be equal-level headliners on alternate stages.”

Securing more significant musical talent, however, requires additional funding, Schutte says. Though the Guided By Voices concert is ticketed, he reinforced that the cost is nominal and for crowd control, not to cover costs of the performers. And, as some bands - like Motherfolk - that have used IndieCraft and festivals like it to grow their careers, draw a greater following, they become harder and harder to book in the future without financial backing.

The additional foot traffic Downtown will also lead to some infrastructure updates to continue meeting parking and safety needs, Kelly says.

The current gravel lot across from Hatch Artist Studios will be paved and the area of Columbia Street near Mother’s will get a streetscape makeover that will include “bumpouts” to help keep traffic speed in check.

CLIMBING, HIKING, BIKING AND MORE: ECOTOURISM IS A BIG DRAW TO CLARK COUNTY

Leann Castillo was driving past Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve in the middle of July and took a look at the parking lot. Not a spot was available, and only two of the vehicles had Ohio license plates.

Why was it so busy at 2 p.m. on a Thursday? Rock climbing at Mad River Gorge is a popular draw for Clark County, says Castillo, director of the National Trail Parks and Recreation District.

But climbing is just one outdoor adventure that attracts tourists from both inside and outside the state. The area’s hiking, paddling, fishing, biking and other fresh-air activities are ideal for enthusiasts of all skill levels, say local outdoor devotees.

Ohio residents often “loosely know” about the outdoor opportunities in the vicinity, says Tom Helbig, owner of Tomfoolery Outdoors.

They know about the bike trails but don’t know there are more than 300 miles of them, he says. They have heard of the Buckeye Trail but don’t know that it circles the state. Or they know about the Mad River but never thought about camping along it.

“I think my business and my personal adventures have opened people’s eyes to those things,” he says.

Tomfoolery Outdoors plans outdoor events and leads guided outdoor experiences for individuals and groups in southwest Ohio and elsewhere. While much of Helbig’s work is in Ohio – his signature event is Canoegrass, a bluegrass festival held near Sidney – his adventures also regularly take him outside the state to places like North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. Helbig lives and travels in his van, following his activities and events.

A recent event was the Pickin Adventurous Series, which combined live music with short hiking, biking and paddling adventures in Clark County on three separate days in August and September. Each event attracted about 30 participants, he

says, and many had not previously been to the park or trail where the adventure was held.

Ecotourism to Helbig means using recreation to draw locals and travelers to spend time outdoors. That can lead not only to improved health and wellness, but it also can lead to success for local businesses, he says.

The region is slowly starting to embrace outdoor recreation as a tool for economic development, he says. When people travel for outdoor activities, they often spend money at other locations within the community, like restaurants and breweries.

“People who recreate in the outdoors tend to have disposable income, and they’re willing to spend it on fun things,” like art, music and food in the place where they are visiting, he says.

For example, Pickin Adventurous activities ended at Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company, where participants supported the brewery and food trucks, Helbig says.

“I try to make that happen with Tomfoolery Outdoors events, where we make those connections for people,” Helbig says.

ECO SPORTS CORRIDOR WHITEWATER PARK

Springfield and Clark County are home to many nature-based attractions that beckon visitors.

Climbing is just one outdoor activity that attracts adventure-seekers from out-of-state. Castillo’s experience this summer of seeing the full parking lot is a “regular occurrence,” says Carol Kennard, executive director of the Clark County Park District.

Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve, 2710 Dayton-Springfield Road, is a destination climbing location throughout the Midwest because it has routes of varying difficulty for both beginners and those who are more advanced, Kennard says. Climbers also like the proximity of the parking lot.

It regularly lures climbers from throughout Ohio and surrounding states. Logs show that within the past year, climbers have come from as far away as Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Missouri, as well as from California and Texas in recent years, she says.

Even as the popularity of climbing at the park has continued to build, visitors also come to birdwatch, see the wildflowers and hike the even terrain.

“It’s really a beautiful nature park, too,” Kennard says.

It is the variety of outdoor activities that makes the community so special for local nature-lovers and tourists, Kennard and Castillo agree.

Castillo points to the whitewater access, multiuse trails, and the area’s bouldering, kayaking and canoeing locations as a few of the places that the community is fortunate to offer.

Ecotourism isn’t just adventure sports or a visit to a rainforest, Castillo says, and it isn’t limited to those visiting from far away.

“It can just be a park with some walking paths,” she says.

When people are outdoors in the fresh air enjoying nature, they not only experience new things but also learn more about themselves,

she says. They are able to relax, to pause for a moment.

“In our day-to-day lives, that’s not always something we can do, or think to do,” Castillo says.

Helbig says that many people don’t realize the adventures that are available within the region. He showcases the diversity of experiences that are available here to help locals realize what they have in their own backyard and to spread the word to people from outside of the state.

“I want to make sure people know what the real Ohio is like versus what they see from the interstate,” Helbig says.
