5 VIETNAMESE CULTURE AND SCIENCE ASSOCIATION Introduction The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is a 501-c(3) non-profit Vietnamese American organization founded in 1990. It has over 550 members which consist of a majority of young Vietnamese American professionals in Houston and in other states of the US and Canada. The VCSA is based in Houston, Texas. Beside the Headquarter office in Houston, VCSA has six other chapters located in Dallas, Austin, Texas; Minnesota; San Diego, California; Washington DC. and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mission Statement Vietnamese Culture and Science Association promotes excellence in education, leadership and skills development through culture and science. Our organization encourages multi-generational and cross-cultural collaborations. We foster civic participation in the mainstream and Vietnamese America.

Activities and Programs • Organize quarterly general meeting to obtain inputs and ideas from members regarding programs and activities of the VCSA. • Organize regular Vietnamese Literature, History classes for young Vietnamese Americans to learn more about the heritage language and Computer classes for the Vietnamese community. • Organize monthly Toastmaster program to improve the communication skills for members. • Organize regular cultural events and participate in the annual cultural events such as the American Asian Festival and the Mardi Gras Festival. • Organize regular professional development workshops to discuss on Science and Technology topics and to share ideas and skills among the professionals. • Organize Annual National Youth Leadership Development Camp “Len Duong”. • Organize Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon. • Participate in all community related activities such as charitable fund raising events, the Vietnamese New Year Festival, the Asian American Festival and other Asian communities’ events. Objectives VCSA’s objectives are to: • Preserve and develop Vietnamese heritage and culture for the Vietnamese American young adults and Vietnamese descendants by establishing various programs and activities. • Promote cooperation among Vietnamese American professionals in exchanging their skills, participating in the programs and activities to build a strong Vietnamese community in North America in general, and in Texas and other states of U.S. in particular. • Encourage participation in community programs and activities and build a strong sense of civic responsibility among Vietnamese Americans. • Collaborate with other Asian communities and the mainstream society.

7 VCSA 17th Annual Youth Excellence Recognition Program After 1975, there have been large waves of Vietnamese refugees escaping from Vietnam to the United States, Canada, and other Western countries. Since then, the Vietnamese-American population has grown tremendously and contributed a great deal to the adopted homeland. With a population of more than one million, the Vietnamese-American communities in the United States have started building their lives and contributed to the society in all different fields. The second and third generations of Vietnamese-American have increased in population and comprised a major part of these communities. In 1997, The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association organized the first Vietnamese-American Youth Recognition Luncheon to recognize the academic achievement of 13 Vietnamese-American students who graduated from more than 55 local high schools in Houston as Valedictorians or Salutatorians. Mayor Lee Brown was the Keynote Speaker for this event. The event was very well received by the community and had a very positive impact on the Asian youth in general and the Vietnamese-American youths in particular.

INTRODUCTION

The event emphasized the importance of education and encouraged the youth to excel academically. In the past sixteen years, we have continued this program as an Annual event of our organization. This program has recognized more than 340 Vietnamese-American students in the past sixteen years for their excellent academic achievements from local high schools. This year, Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is proud to present the Seventeenth Annual Youth Excellence Recognition program. In this event, we will present a slide show featuring the highlights of VCSA activities in the past year. We also would like to encourage the younger generations of Vietnamese-Americans to excel in education by following the footsteps of the outstanding academic and leadership achievements of the Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as Valedictorian or Salutatorian in the Greater Houston and vicinity. Other scholarship programs will also be presented in this event. The past honorees will highlight the event with spectacular cultural performances and entertainment.

SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL YOUTH RECOGNITION EXCELLENCE LUNCHEON

8 Ngày Truyền Thống Hội Văn Hóa Khoa Học Việt Nam 2013 Kể từ biến cố tháng 4 năm 1975, hàng triệu người Việt Nam đã phải bỏ nước ra đi để tìm kiếm một đời sống tự do và trong số này, khoảng hơn phân nửa đã đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, những người di dân Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ không những đã nhanh chóng ổn định đời sống mà còn đóng góp cho xã hội tạm dung nhiều thành quả quan trọng về mọi phương diện như kinh tế, giáo dục, xã hội, khoa học, kỹ thuật, v.v... Trong tác phẩm “Vietnamese Americans” do cơ sở Rourke Corporation tại Florida xuất bản năm 1991, tác giả Susan Auerbach đã viết: “Các thành quả của người Việt trong khuôn khổ học đường, trong lãnh vực khoa học kỹ thuật, và trong phạm vi kinh doanh đã gây phấn khởi cho những người thuộc các sắc dân khác vừa đến định cư tại Hoa Kỳ.” Trong một tác phẩm khác với nhan đề “The Vietnamese Experience in America” do cơ sở xuất bản viện đại học Indiana ấn hành năm 1992 tại Indianapolis, ông Paul Rutledge nhận định là “với sự thành công nhanh chóng của người Việt, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn, xã hội Hoa Kỳ sẽ được hưởng mối lợi gấp nhiều lần số ngân khoản chính phủ đã trợ giúp họ trong vấn đề định cư.”

INTRODUCTION

Thật vậy, như những nhận xét của các tác giả nêu trên, người Việt tỵ nạn đã thành công khá nhanh chóng so với những người di dân khác và thành công về mọi lãnh vực, đặc biệt tại học đường. Hầu hết những người di dân Việt Nam đã đến Hoa Kỳ với một số vốn nghèo nàn về Anh ngữ. Tuy nhiên, với tinh thần hiếu học đã ăn sâu vào tâm khảm người Việt từ bao thế hệ, chỉ trong một thời gian ngắn ngủi, họ đã trở nên những học sinh, sinh viên xuất sắc tại các trường trung, đại học và sau khi tốt nghiệp, đã mang khả năng của mình để cống hiến cho xã hội Hoa Kỳ. Trong hơn hai thập niên qua, thế hệ con em của những người di dân Việt Nam đầu tiên đã dần dần trưởng thành và đang cố gắng nối tiếp truyền thống cha anh để đạt được những thành quả tốt đẹp trong sự học.

GIỚI THIỆU

Đầu năm 1997, qua sự liên lạc với ban giám hiệu các trường trung học ở Houston và vùng phụ cận, hội VHKHVN được biết số học sinh Việt Nam tốt nghiệp với thứ hạng thủ khoa (Valedictorian) và á khoa (Salutatorian), niên khóa 1996-1997, chiếm một tỉ lệ khá cao so với các sắc dân khác. Trước sự kiện này, hội VHKHVN đã tổ chức một buổi tiệc vào ngày 3 tháng 8 năm 1997 để tuyên dương và phát thưởng các em học sinh ưu tú kể trên. Mục đích chính của buổi tiệc là để khuyến khích tất cả các học sinh, sinh viên Việt Nam chuyên cần hơn trong sự học. Trong buổi tiệc, tiến sĩ Lee Brown, thị trưởng thành phố Houston, đã phát biểu trên diễn đàn là ông rất ngạc nhiên và vô cùng thán phục trước thành tích vẻ vang của các học sinh người Mỹ gốc Việt. Ý nghĩa và sự thành công của buổi tiệc năm đầu tiên đã gây được tiếng vang đáng kể, không những tại thành phố Houston mà còn lan đến các thành phố có đông người Việt cư ngụ tại Hoa Kỳ và tại một vài quốc gia khác. Sau đó, được sự khích lệ của quý đồng hương, hội VHKHVN quyết định sẽ cố gắng tiếp tục chương trình tuyên dương cùng phát thưởng các học sinh ưu tú hằng năm. Chương trình này sẽ được bao gồm trong các buổi tiệc với danh xưng “Ngày Truyền Thống Hội VHKHVN,” được tổ chức vào mỗi đầu tháng Tám. Trong 16 năm vừa qua, Ngày Truyền Thống đã có dịp tuyên dương thành tích xuất sắc của hơn 340 em học sinh trung học Việt Nam tại Houston và vùng phụ cận. Năm nay, hội VHKHVN hân hạnh giới thiệu thành tích xuất sắc của 29 em học sinh ưu tú của niên khóa 2012 – 2013. Đặc biệt năm nay là năm kỷ niệm lần thứ 17 Hội thực hiện chương trình ý nghĩa này và công tác tổ chức do chính các em học sinh xuất sắc các niên học trước phụ trách. Với chương trình tuyên dương và phát thưởng các học sinh Việt Nam ưu tú, hội VHKHVN hy vọng sẽ ít nhiều góp phần vào việc khuyến khích các em trau giồi sự học để làm thăng tiến cộng đồng người Việt chúng ta tại Houston và vùng phụ cận.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Quyen D. Chu, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., is an endowed professor of surgery, chief of surgical oncology and director of the surface malignancies program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, Brown Medical School, Providence, RI, completed his surgical residency at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Boston, MA, and surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY. He has over 150 publications, received over $200,000 in grants, edited a Vietnamese translation of the World Health Organization book, “Surgical Care at a District Hospital”, and is currently editing another book, “Surgical Oncology: A Practical Approach”. He was twice the recipient of the Vietnam Education Foundation U.S. Faculty Scholar Award and was named as the 2013 Best Doctors by U.S. News & World Report / Castle and Connolly. He belongs to numerous prestigious academic surgical/medical societies and along with his wife, Trina, co-founded MeditrinaUSA, a company that assists international patients come to the U.S. for their medical care. Hiện nay ông đang là Trưởng ban Phẫu thuật về ung thư và là Giám đốc Chương trình Nghiên cứu về Ung bướu độc trên mặt tại Trung tâm Nghiên cứu về Khoa học Y tế thuộc viện Đại học Louisiana tại Shreveport.

Bác sĩ Chu tốt nghiệp cử nhân tại Đại học Dartmouth, Hanover, tiểu bang New Hampshire, và Đại học Y khoa Brown tại Providence, tiểu bang Rhodes Island. Ông hoàn tất chương trình nội trú về phẫu thuật tại Trung tâm Y khoa St. Elizabeth tại Boston, tiểu bang Massachussetts, và chương trình nội trú về phẫu thuật ung thư tại Viện Ung thư Roswell Park tại Buffalo, New York. Về phương diện nghiên cứu, ông đã có hơn 150 công trình nghiên cứu được ấn hành và đã được nhiều ngân sách tài trợ cho nghiên cứu lên tới hơn $200,000. Ngoài ra, ông còn là biên tập viên của một cuốn sách gồm những tài liệu được dịch ra tiếng Việt do Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO) ấn hành. Hiện nay ông đang biên tập một cuốn sách khác mang tựa đề “Phẫu thuật Ung thư: Một Phương thức Thực tiễn.” Bác sĩ Chu đã hai lần được giải thưởng Giáo sư và Học giả Xuất sắc do Quỹ Giáo dục Việt Nam (VEF), một tổ chức thuộc chính quyền Liên bang Hoa Kỳ, trao tặng. Năm 2013, ông được tờ báo uy tín U.S. News & World Report và Công ty Castle Connolly công nhận là một trong những bác sĩ y khoa xuất sắc nhất trong năm. Bác sĩ Chu còn là hội viên của nhiều tổ chức hàn lâm về phẫu thuật và y khoa, và cùng với vợ ông, bà Trina, đồng sáng lập MeditrinaUSA, một công ty chuyên trợ giúp cho những bệnh nhân quốc tế sang Mỹ trị bệnh.

I have been a member of my school’s calculator team for the past three years. It was nice to be able to see that all the time, hard work, and dedication paid off. Most Significant Achievement/Thành Công: My Eagle Scout rank is my greatest accomplishment. I had been working to achieve that rank for 11 years, so earning it was an affirmation of my dedication, leadership, citizenship, and responsibility. To earn my Eagle rank, I had to plan and carry out a community service project by myself. I chose to build two 6-foot picnic tables for a local Buddhist temple, as well as repair old tables that were falling apart. I also recruited volunteers to help build the tables. I didn’t know that planning and seeing the project to completion would take over 200 hours, but I am happy with choosing to help the temple, because it was an opportunity for me to give back to people who had taught me fundamental Buddhist values that have shaped me into the man I am today. Today, my Eagle rank represents the service I’ve done for others, and a reminder to do a good turn daily. At the same time, it shows me that with dedication and hard work, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. Cấp bậc hướng đạo “đại bàng” Eagle Scout là thành tựu lớn nhất của em. Em đã cố gắng trong suốt 11 năm để đạt được cấp bậc đó, vì vậy đây chính là sự khẳng định về việc cống hiến, khả năng lãnh đạo, nghĩa vụ công dân và tinh thần trách nhiệm của mình. Để đạt được cấp bậc này, em đã phải lập kế hoạch và tự thân thực hiện một dự án phục vụ cộng đồng. Em đã chọn để đóng hai cái bàn picnic mới cho một ngôi chùa địa phương, cũng như tu sửa những cái bàn bị hư hỏng. Em đã kêu gọi nhiều thiện nguyện viên để giúp đỡ trong công việc này. Em không ngờ từ lúc lên kế hoạch cho đến khi thấy dự án hoàn thành mất hơn 200 giờ, nhưng em hạnh phúc với lựa chọn đã giúp chùa, bởi vì đây là một cơ hội để em tri ân các thầy đã dạy dỗ em giá trị Phật giáo cơ bản. Những giá trị này định hình em thành con người của em ngày hôm nay. Hôm nay, cấp bậc Eagle của em đại diện cho sự cống hiến mà em đã làm cho người khác, và là một lời nhắc nhở để ta thực hiện việc tốt hàng ngày. Đồng thời, cấp bậc này cho em thấy rằng với sự quyết tâm và tinh thần làm việc chăm chỉ, em có thể đạt được bất cứ điều gì em đặt tâm trí vào.

Goals/Mục Tiêu: By the time I graduate from college, I hope to be accomplished. I mean this in a personal and professional sense. I want to earn my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Rice University and gain admission to medical school, but I also want to grow as an individual. I intend to travel the United States and the world, as well as study abroad so that I may learn about other cultures and ways of life. I also want to be able to provide for my parents. (It is among the most prestigious academic honors awarded to students in Katy ISD, the very highest level of academic achievement for graduating seniors.) Criteria for this award included a strong potential for the senior to be extremely successful in the future and to make major contributions to society. The award thus took into consideration my character, my personality, and my service to the community, qualities that were not reflected in my Valedictorian award. The committee for this award also consisted of the faculty from my school, and I was sincerely touched that my teachers and my administrators considered me to be among the most outstanding science students in Katy ISD. Most Significant Achievement/Thành Công: As a senior, I was given an opportunity to be an athletic trainer for a varsity sport. I worked for baseball, which was a surprise because before, there had never been a student athletic trainer for baseball. It was grueling work, considering that I worked three days a week at a tea shop (for minimum wage!) and I had to attend two baseball games a week, which usually lasted until ten in the evening. Additionally, I was expected to be at school at around seven in the morning to deal with morning treatments. As a female, and the first athletic training student for this sport, there was pressure from all sides. I wanted to prove that being a female didn’t hinder me from my job, and at the same time, I wanted the athletes and coaches to understand how important my job was. Most importantly, I wanted to leave behind a legacy, no matter how small. Now, I can only grin as coaches and players ask for my recommendations for a replacement for the next season. Goals/Mục Tiêu: I work over forty hours a week at a small private owned pharmacy, and I drive at least thirty eight miles a day to get to work and to get home. The pharmacy I work at is in a poor neighborhood. Every day, I see the struggle to make ends meet, how a dollar can be the deciding factor in whether or not to get the medication that is needed. It’s heartbreaking to see so many people struggle to get the healthcare they need, yet it motivates me to achieve something higher. I plan on entering the medical field to help give one of the most basic human rights- the right to live a healthy life, unchained by social status or monetary status. Goals/Mục Tiêu: My interest inexpensive and accessible treatment largely stems from my family’s unfortunate medical history. One after another, my family members were afflicted with cancer. Because of our poor financial background, we could not possibly pay for the expensive chemotherapy/radiotherapy treatment. My biomedical research innovations such as a disposable plastic sensor has the potential to save countless number of lives by providing a type of preventative screening even underprivileged patients can afford. With ardent passion for medicine and also bioengineering I aim to continue my studies in these areas—aspiring to be the unconventional doctor that fortifies the bridge that connects revolutionary research to patient care. Ultimately, by fusing medicine with engineering, I strive to eventually bring widely accessible health care innovations such as my sensor to the public and developing countries. (More concretely I aim to pursue and M.D., (and possibly Ph.D.) with a background in medical technology/engineering). Goals/Mục Tiêu: Essentially, I want to become a big name in the film/TV industry either in front of or behind the cameras, but since acting is so fickle, production is the next best thing. My game plan is to work from the bottom up, starting off as an intern for a film studio and networking my way to the top of the success pyramid. By no means is it an easy task, but I am confident I can endure the long and arduous path ahead of me. Most Significant Achievement/Thành Công: My most significant achievement would have to be graduating as Salutatorian of the Alief Taylor Class of 2013. I had always known that I was a student with above average skills, considering that I’d been placed in the GT program at an early age as well as maintained good grades in most subjects at school; however, the final minutes of graduation while I shared my Salutatorian speech was the moment I knew the hard work I put into studying and learning finally paid off in a way that not only I can see, but everyone I had studied with and those that pushed me to work hard can finally see too. Thành tựu đáng kể nhất của em là đã được tốt nghiệp với chức Á Khoa của Alief Taylor trong niên khóa 2013. Em đã luôn biết rằng em là một học sinh trên trung bình, xét vào đó em đã được đặt vào trong chương trình GT ở độ tuổi rất sớm cũng như duy trì điểm cao trong hầu hết tất cả các môn ở trường. I will continue to keep science in my life, and although I’m not sure what I want for the immediate future, in the long run I hope to find my true calling and become a well-rounded person. NICHOLAS C. LEPHAM CITIZENSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) and the LePham family are pleased to invite applicants for the 2013 Nicholas C. LePham Citizenship and Public Service Award. The LePham family and committee is looking to award this scholarship to an aspiring Vietnamese-American student who is able to demonstrate strong civic participation and active citizenship within the community. Changes and improvements can only take place when future leaders organize within the community to address problems. We seek to empower young Vietnamese-Americans to attend college, and to pursue their dreams for further community service and public works.

About Nicholas C. LePham

Nicholas ChiLinh LePham is a graduate of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Mr. LePham was born in Houston, TX, and spent his childhood there before moving abroad. However, he has always considered Houston his home and would like to give back to the community. He’s also a passionate political activist, whose past experience includes work on the Presidential campaign of US Senator John F. Kerry (MA), the Congressional campaign of US Rep. Nick Lampson (TX-Sugar Land), the Hillary Clinton for President Committee (NY) and the Center for American Progress. More recently, he co-founded the National Organization of Vietnamese Leaders (NOVAL) where he is the DC Chapter’s Treasurer and currently works at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the government agency that ensures consumer financial products and services work for all Americans. His goals with the scholarship are the following:

era Tran was born on April 22, 1982 in McKinney Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Lam Tran. She graduated Salutatorian from Michael DeBakey High School for Health Professions in 2000. She was a VCSA Youth Excellence Recognition Award Recipient in 2000, and joined VCSA afterwards and became the Director of Social Services. Every summer, she met up with former recipients to help organize the Youth Excellence Recognition Program. She was in her last year of studies at the University of Houston, Baylor-Houston PreMedical Academy, majoring in Biology, when the tragic accident occurred. On April 15, 2003, one week before her 21st birthday, Vera tragically died in a car accident that occurred when an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign. Though we mourn the unfulfilled goals she had yet to achieve, we celebrate her enormous contributions to our lives and her love for humanity. Vera dedicated her life to community service. In the summer she would work in a nutrition research lab at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center. She was always a smiling, helpful and cheerful volunteer. The Children’s Nutrition Research Center has since named an internship in her honor. Since November 2002, she was involved with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Foundation-Student Global AIDS Walk Committee. She was the City Director (Fundraising, Marketing, Recruitment, Logistic planning) of the group of undergraduate students to coordinate a Houston AIDS walk to benefit clinics in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In November 2001 she helped to organize a Fund Raising Drive in Houston to raise funds for the flood victims in Vietnam. She helped to raise more than $25,000 for the flood victims in Vietnam. She also has been the initiator and leader of the “Meals for the Homeless” project every Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday since 2001. Her sudden departure has greatly impacted so many people whose lives have been touched by her. Vera Tran was a role-model, an inspiration, and a friend to all who met her. She fearlessly took on life armed with only love and compassion. Vera greeted everyone she met with a smile – a smile that could light up an entire room. She had an immaculate soul and a song in her heart. This is how Vera will be remembered by her family and friends, as well as the Vietnamese community at large. Her demise was a tragic loss that resonated throughout the community. In 2003, 2000 VCSA Youth Excellence Recognition recipients Trang Pham and Huy Pham created the Vera Tran Memorial Foundation Scholarship. With a generous donation from Vera’s father, and yearly contributions from Huy and Trang, we hope to continue this annual scholarship going. The $2,000 scholarship recognizes a graduating student of Vietnamese descent, with an excellent academic record and a track record of compassion and initiative in community service. Mr. Anthony Nguyen Thanh Toan was always an avid supporter of education, taking inspiration from the dedicated work of his wife, Kim Yen Vu, a long time public school educator and currently a school principal with Alief ISD. Kim Yen Vu is also the current president of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Anthony, who passed away on July 22, 2011, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was an active member and longtime supporter of VCSA.
