Gentlemanly Hanger

June 2014

Gentlemanly hanger is based on a classic gentleman’s suit. This type of furniture can offer whimsy to home decoration. The elements separate into two parts: the hanging part (hat, mustache, bow-tie and walking stick) and standing part (backbone and x-shaped base). After all elements are completed, they are welded together and painted black and white.

Portable Music Stand

February 2014

The music stand is composed of three parts (x-shaped base, support stand, sheet holder). Users can transport the components in a backpack and assembly is easy. The curved line on the support stand came from the idea of the soft curve in the neck of a goose. The shape and length reflects elegance and vitality. The x-shaped base is inspired by the firm, stable foot of the bird. The weight and structure provides the counter balance necessary to prevent tipping.

Jewelry Box

July 2014

The focus of the jewelry box is the pattern on top. I designed the inlay as dark wood lines; each line’s beginning connects with the other’s end. There is a circle in the center, which shows a sense of rotation. The wooden box still looks tasteful even without jewelry.

Cardboard Chair

September 2014

This cardboard chair is for people to sit on while reading and having a coffee. It can also hold a backpack or a laptop. The idea for this chair came from the Chinese traditional symbol “Yin and Yang,” which describes how apparently opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary. The chair can support at least 150 kg weight for people sitting, while the chair’s own weight is less than 8 kg, making it easy to move. To offer strong stability and support, the base under the seat is designed in a honeycomb shape.

Bright Watering

March 2015

Bright Watering is designed to be easier to move, lift, and use. This is designed for seniors and individuals with limited mobility, allowing users to garden in comfort and safety with two features. Firstly, it provides multiple handling areas for watering in different positions, using a specific colour for guidance. Secondly, the bottom provides a stable curved base. Users can rotate it on a surface, decreasing the pressure for users’ hands and protects users’ wrists.

3D Printing Works

June 2015

In the second semester of my design study, I started designing digital 3D models with the software 123D Design and Fusion 360. Then I began to access 3D printing in my third semester. I tested different additive manufacturing printers, such as MakerBot1, Taz2, and Mendelmax3. At the same time, I tried different types of filament, like ABS and PLA.

MOGRO Package

package

December 2014

This design project was to create a package for a fertilizer company “MOGRO.” The purpose of the product is to help the growth of tomatoes. There are three styles of MOGRO packages to appeal to logos, ethos and pathos. All of these packages are printed in colour and constructed by hand. Since MOGRO fertilizer sells to farmers and gardeners, the goal of the packaging is to show that the fertilizer is helpful and effective.

Postcard Sale Event

March 2015

postcard

This studio project required students to choose a theme to represent local life in Halifax, then design or illustrate a figure for a postcard. The outstanding design work will be made to sell in public. I chose my topic to be university life in Halifax. Since there are five post-secondary institutions in Halifax, student life is an irreplaceable part of Halifax local life.

Our printing group uses a letter press machine to press each postcard. My postcards were sold at Dalhousie University.

Remembrance Day November 11

Halifax Grand Parade 11:00 am

(Fig. 2).

Poster of Event

October 2014

The poster is created for Remembrance Day 2014 in Halifax. The Halifax Grand Parade is the spot of the Remembrance Day event. I have drawn the monument of Grand Parade as a background, which represents the location of the event. In front of the monument is a scene of hands holding a family photo, which includes a soldier and his family members. To represent the general solider rather than a specific person, a poppy is covering the soldier’s face. On the left side, there are many peace doves flying past the monument across the black background, emphasizing the atmosphere of sadness. Therefore, the poster encourages us to remember the soldiers who died in wars and to protect peace in the world.

Cannoneers Crest

September 2014

The Wanderers’ Club is a lawn bowling club in Halifax. The club invited design students to design logos and infographics for them. I chose the cannons for the logo because cannons on Halifax Citadel Hill are symbolic of Halifax. Cannoneers is chosen as the team’s name. Using a shield as the background and cannons in front connects with the offense and defense in the game. Moreover, I used dark blue for the background, which represents the color of the sea, because Halifax is a coastal city.

CBC News interviewed me at the lawn bowling club. In this still, I was explaining the design of my logo and jersey. Link of the interview: www.cbc.ca/player/
