EDITOR’S
LETTER
The month of February, the shortest month of the year and home to the dreaded Valentine’s Day. We often associate gushy couples, cheap chocolate, and tacky gifts with this holiday. However, as a staff, we chose to embrace the month by looking at the idea of euphoria. Euphoria by definition is a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness. We challenged our staff to go beyond their preconceived ideas and look at happiness, love; both platonic and romantic, or the beauty that surrounds us. The result: beautifully curated work that pushes past the cliché. I hope you find inspiration in the work of these very talented individuals & thank you for reading Chroma Magazine. JAMES hurst Happiness is a Warm Camera When I first started to brain storm ideas for a series centered around Euphoria all I could think about was the typical cliches: smiles, twinkling eyes, sunsets, those Pinterest photos of a bird’s eye view of fruity oatmeal, and a good book. But as an artist I am constantly trying to push away from the normal and the cliches of photography. I dug deep and came to the conclusion that what truly brings me euphoria is nature, and being out in the world. This is why I chose to push myself by waking up at 4:00 A.M. on a Monday of all the days too, and go take shots of the world just as light began to creep in. I had never taken a sunrise series and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I drove to Crown Point in Corbett Oregon and scoped out the land, it was perfect. However, just before sunrise a thick fog rolled in, classic! I took advantage of this fog to take surreal photos with high contrast, created by the white background.

wistful desire
ellie josephson Happiness doesn’t always display itself easily. A connected bundle of moments leading only one individual to satisfaction. Happiness isn’t something to flaunt, but rather a more introspective personal journey. I find that my moments of happiness are most pure when its sole purpose of existence is to just be. So I decided to pull images from a time or thought that once brought be joy, images that mean something to me and my wistful desire to return to a better time.
