October Awareness At A Glance: *Breast Cancer Awareness Month *World Blindness Awareness Month Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

Facts About Breast Cancer In The United States This year, an estimated 43,600 women will die from breast cancer in the U.S. Although rare, men get breast cancer too. In 2021, an estimated 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the U.S. and approximately 530 will die.

In South Carolina, approximately 3,845* women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 678 die from the disease each year. *This statistic is for female breast cancers excluding in situ cancers. Breast cancer starts when the cells in the breast begin to grow out of control.

Can MEN get breast cancer?

Yes, men can get breast cancer. But breast cancer is about 100 times more common in

women than in men. In men, breast cancer can happen at any age, but is most common in men who are between 60 and 70 years old. Medical treatment options are the same for both women and men who get breast cancer.
