T
he announcement by Minister Michael Ring, Minister for Rural and Community Development, that €1.4 million in LEADER funding has been spent across 47 projects in Wexford hasbeen welcomed by local Minister Michael D’Arcy who pointed out that thes grant is supporting jobs and investment across the county. There has been a significant expansion of activity over the last 12 months since the Minister introduced a range of measures to make the programme work better for both potential applicants and for the LEADER Local Action Groups which deliver the programme on the ground. The following community
groups and organisations across Wexford have now received funding for their local projects. Among the projects being funded are: Tara Rock Community Field Trust, Gorey, CCE Ballygarrett, Gorey, Gorey Courtown Forest Park Ltd,Kia Ora Mini Farm, North Wexford Historical Society, The Gap Arts Festival also Dunbrody Famine Ship, New Ross Course Angling, Oulart Hill Development group, Rosslare Community Dev Association, Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford Male Voice Choir and Yola Hedge School. The LEADER programme funds projects under a diverse range of themes that include enterprise development, rural tourism, social inclusion and the environment. LEADER is a key
component of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 20142020. Minister D’Arcy said. LEADER funding represents an enormous opportunity for rural businesses and communities that are in need of investment and I want to see the programme continuing to grow and make a difference for rural Ireland over the coming years. Fine Gael is working hard to ensure the fruits of our recovering economy are used to support local communities in County Wexford. The whole idea behind LEADER funding is to empower local groups on the ground to prioritise where the money can be best spent. This will ensure that the people who really need it can benefit.”

WINNERS AND LOSERS AS LOCAL ELECTION MAP IS RE-DRAWN
T
he new local election boundaries which were announced in mid-June will play a decisive role in the make-up of the Co. Council to be elected next May. Several councillors are furious over the decision to change the boundaries just eleven months before polling with a number of them losing key territories, which they had concentrated on over the past four years, to new districts. The number of electoral areas goes from four, which mirrored the main towns, to six, with Kilmuckridge and Kilmore now having electoral districts in their own right. The overall number of councillors does not change but the number to be elected from each district does. The Wexford urban area and the adjoining parishes of Barntown, Glynn, Crossabeg and Castlebridge is the largest of the new areas with seven seats. The creation of this tight urban focus district will be a boost to Labour with the party likely to take at least two seats with George Lawlor reigning supreme in the area. It’s probably good news too for Sinn Fein who will fancy their chances of taking a second seat but the party does face the handicap of having an untested team with sitting Councillor Tom Forde a co-optee to the current Council. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will face challenges in this district with candidate selection the key to their hopes. Gorey councillor John Hegarty has lived in the Crosstown area of Wexford for the past four years and would be seen as a strong contender if he switches districts. He lives in an area that is almost certain to elect a councillor next
time around, For Fianna Fail the veteran Tony Dempsey may be persuaded to stand again to hover up the votes in Barntown and Glynn. The new Kilmore district sees areas which were previously part of New Ross moving districts. Taghmon, Clongeen, Bannow and Duncormack are now all part of this new district. With no major urban centres this is a district which should suit the traditional parties, but a slight complication here for Fianna Fail is the presence of Ger Carthy, who is close to the party, but who will run as an independent. Carthy, outgoing Fine Gael councillor Jim Moore and Fianna fail’s Lisa McDonald should have a relatively straightforward task here but things will probably be a bit more complicated for Fine Gael’s Frank Staples and Sinn Fein’s Mick Roche. Roche has the advantage of having new areas added close to his base, but his party vote tends to be much stronger in urban housing estates and this district does not have any of them. Staples’ problem stems from the fact that Fine Gael is likely to run a strong candidate in the Taghmon area, possibly a family member of the late councillor Pat Codd, and with the outing FG man competing for votes in the backyard of Ger Carthy he could be vulnerable. The big winners in the new six seater Enniscorthy district are Kathleen Codd Nolan and Barbara Ann Murphy who now have an enlarged area to divide between them. But the losers here are Willie Kavanagh of Fianna Fail in Oylegate who will probably have to move out of the area and Paddy Kavanagh who sees a lot of his vote base
moved out of the area. A strong newcomer Fine Gael candidate from the general Bree area could put him under pressure. Gorey District loses seats and several parishes, much to the annoyance of local representatives. However, the outgoing councillors who stand again in the area should be relatively safe while there will also be room for newcomers. The new Kilmuckridge electoral district includes parts that were previously Gorey and parts that were in Enniscorthy. It’s a real boost for Oliver Walsh of Blackwater and it should also be good news for Pip Breen and Mary Farrell the Killmuckridge based Independent. But this is a four seater and with new candidates likely to emerge at least one outgoing councillor could be vulnerable in a sudden death type situation which four seaters create. In New Ross, where two seats and a lot of parishes are lost, the redrawing creates a potentially very difficult situation for several outgoing councillors. Worst affected are Fine Gael’s Willie Fitzharris and Sinn Fein’s Oisin O’Connell who see large areas of their support base wiped away. Fianna Fail’s Michael Whelan was not be assisted by the re-drawing either and the fact five of the outgoing councillors contesting the district’s six seats are likely to be Fianna Fail or former Fianna Fail, almost certainly means there will be casualties. Between now and next May the parties will be drawing up their preferred candidate lists and the identity and location of those candidates will be a key factor in who wins most seats next May.

Jim steps out and Tony steps in T here were warmed tributes to outgoing Mayor of Wexford Borough District, Jim Moore when he bowed out of Office at the annual Mayoral election. In his closing address Mayor Moore remarked that his term had been marked by three major weather events involving wind, snow and he left in a heatwave. He highlighted the fact during his term the Council had commenced its first housebuilding in the area for many years. The development of Min Ryan Park which is now underway and the development of a Maritime Trail were other key infrastructural developments mentioned by Cllr. Moore. One of the highlights of his year was the Redmond commemorations which were attended by President Higgins while he also had the honour of
welcoming Taoiseach Varadkar during the Wexford festival. There were tributes and praise from all his colleagues. Tony Dempsey said he had carried out his duties with tremendous dignity, George Lawlor said he had commanded the respect of the public, Tony Walsh said he had conducted the office with great professionalism and had displayed great wisdom, Lisa McDonald said he had been an excellent Chairman of meetings and Cllr. Tom Forde commended his fairness. Family and friends gathered to witness the election of Cllr. Dempsey, including his brother who travelled from the United States. The new Mayor told his colleagues that the only way they could really help people out of disadvantage was through education. Furthering educational opportunities for people in
Wexford through the creation of a Technical University for the South East is one of the new mayor’s top priorities along with the development of Rosslare Euro Port. And he is to establish a programme aimed at developing the arts in primary schools. There were warm good wishes for the new mayor from all of his colleagues. Chief Executive Tom Enright spoke of the high regard in which the new mayor was held and he also paid tribute to outgoing mayor Moore who he said had represented Wexford with distinction. Cllr. Dempsey defeated Sinn Fein’s Mick Roche by 6 votes to 4 to win the chains with George Lawlor taking the deputy mayor’s Chains in a draw from the hat after Lisa McDonald switched sides for this vote.

BRIDGETOWN YOUTH LATE WEXFORD SOLDIER RECEIVES SPECIAL HONOUR CENTRE OPENS
Mayor Jim Moore with Cllr. Mick Roche and representatives of Werxford Co. Council and the FDYS join local young people for the opening of the new Centre in Bridgetown
W
exford County Council, FDYS and the local community have combined forces to develop a new Youth Centre in Bridgetown. The Youth Centre project is being delivered via a partnership between Wexford County Council and FDYS in response to the needs of local residents using a highly effective whole of family approach model. The project plans to establish a dynamic team of staff and volunteers to develop support services for local residents in an environment where they will feel supported, valued and welcome. In welcoming all those present to the recent Open Evening, Chief Executive of FDYS, Ki-
eran Donohoe stressed to the young people of the area that the Centre was their space in which to feel safe and to have fun. “FDYS delighted to work with Wexford County Council in making this space available to the young people of the area” said Mr. Donohoe. “The focus of the Youth Centre and the manner and direction in which it will operate will come directly from the young people and we hope the community will actively engage with this worthy initiative and help us in our efforts”. Ger Mackey of Wexford County Council’s Community Department spoke of the need for such a facility in the Bridgetown area and explained how the demand for a Youth Centre was
identified through research and local knowledge. He welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with FDYS and congratulated the FDYS team on the quality of service delivery being made available to the young people of the area. Mayor of Wexford Cllr Jim Moore was also fulsome in his praise of all those involved in developing the Bridgetown Youth Centre. “Wexford County Council recognises that as a rapidly growing community, Bridgetown needs and is deserving of these facilities. We thank FDYS for their support and hard work in getting this project off the ground so quickly and we also congratulate the local community for the manner in which they have wholeheartedly embraced the Youth Centre project from the very beginning.. Cllr Mick Roche was also in attendance at the Open Evening. Cllr. Roche spoke warmly of his dream for such a project over the last ten years, saying it was incredible to be finally standing in the facility, while Cllr Michael Sheehan, who also attended the Open Evening wished the project well and outlined plans by Wexford County Council to extend such services to the New Ross area.
A
Wexford soldier with a coveted career in the Defence Forces has been handed a special honour. Post 9 of the Irish United Nations Veterans Association in Athlone, Co Westmeath has been named after the late Mick McCarth, a soldier from Drinagh in Wexford. The Mick McCarth House was officially opened by Minister with responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe. Mr McCarth’s family and senior military management were present for the opening. The facilities in the house will be used for ex-soldiers to meet and socialise and to find out relevant information about pensions and social welfare entitlements. Minister Kehoe paid tribute to Mr McCarth’s service and committed to the Defence Forces. “Michael Mc Carth, known as “Mick” was the first President of Post 9,” Minister Kehoe said. “Indeed, Mick passed away while holding the Office of President in 2010. Mick came from Drinagh, near Wexford Town so is from the same county as myself. He joined the army in 1946 and won several All-Army Individual gymnastic, Vicars Machine Gun and Gustaf Machine

Gun awards during his service,” he added. “Mick trained in the Curragh and served in Custume Barracks in the 6 Infantry Battalion and the Command Training Depot, Western Command,” Minister Kehoe said. “Mick was with the first Irish Group to serve in the Congo and he also served three tours in Cyprus. Mick retired in the rank of Brigade Sergeant Major (BSM) and was one of the founder members of Post 9, IUNVA Athlone in 2009. Mick Mc Carth was clearly a man who gave outstanding service to the Defence Forces
and it is fitting that we gather here today to officially open the house named in his memory.” Minister Kehoe also paid tribute to the members of Post 9 and the wider veterans associations. I am acutely conscious of the tremendous work done by this Post and the other 20 Posts in IUNVA in looking after Ex UN Veterans who have fallen on hard times. I’m also aware of your great work in visiting Veterans in local hospitals and Hospices. I know you also render honours at the funerals of Ex UN Veterans. Thank you for your service.”

Chairman moves “Poor decision” for to steady the ship the Gorey district T T he election of a Cathaoirleach for Gorey Municipal District Council didn’t run smoothly and there was an air of tension in the chamber as the process began to unfold, albeit half an hour behind the scheduled starting time! The outgoing chief, Cllr Joe Sullivan, appeared satisfied with his busy year in the chair and the members and officials paid the customary tributes which were complimentary and polite, and Joe appreciated the praise. Then came the magic moment when it was time for a successor to be installed and the word on the street and in the corridors of power favoured Fine Gael’s Cllr Anthony Donohoe as the front runner. Cllr Malcolm Byrne told the chair he would like to propose Cllr Donohoe, but the man from Annagh “respectfully declined due to work commitments” and that was the end of that. Cllr Pip Breen felt that Cllr Donohoe had
“missed an opportunity.” Cllr Byrne then proposed Cllr John Hegarty and Cllr Breen seconded the Fine Gael councillor who had forfeited the leadership of Wexford County Council in the previous 24 hours, but the former stalwart in a Wexford football jersey was up to the challenge. Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabhain proposed Cllr Robbie Ireton and explained that he was “unhappy” at the Fianna Fáil - Fine Gael ‘coalition’ and regarded the ‘cosy arrangement’ as “exclusion more than inclusion.” This set off Cllr Ireton on a rant that appears to be a hardy annual at this stage, but the Courtown councillor hit out at the “old days of the Commissioners and Town Council who set a precedent with a ‘pact’ that meant the council would be dominated by the main parties.” Cllr Ireton favoured the old system of ‘rotation’ where automat-
ically each party got a run in the chair. “The battle is being fought in a most undemocratic way and we should get away from the old Town Council system,” he said with an angry tone in his voice. Cllr Donohoe proposed Cllr Malcolm Byrne for the position of Leas-Cathaoirleach and the team for 2018-’19 was quickly in place. Cllr Ireton proposed Cllr Ó Súilleabháin for the deputy role, but the die was already cast. Being a true politician, the new Cathaoirleach told the members that Gorey is performing well, the members have always put Gorey town and district first, and he insisted their focus will always be on making Gorey even better and he called on all to put their shoulder to the wheel. And as they settle down to the last term before the local authority elections next May, one thing is certain, there are interesting times ahead.
WHAT DOES THE DISTRICT COUNCIL DO?
I
f you ever wondered what the defining function of Gorey Municipal District Council could be, then District Manager, Amanda Byrne’s report of the 2017-’18 year at the annual general meeting held in the Council Chamber paints an accurate picture. Ms. Byrne cited the Tidy Towns’ North Wexford 2K Clean-Up, now in its fourth year, the awards ceremony, the environmental awards, the Market House festival, Hallowe’en, the big Christmas ‘Switch On’ as the events that
kept the council busy. There were also the civic receptions, the Sri Lanka and PolskaEire annual events, so organising local festivals and community events is a major function for the district council. The next event of note in the Gorey district is the Camolin Parish Homecoming which takes place from Friday to Sunday, July 6-8th. It is a comprehensive programme of events that will bring focus to Camolin, and increased footfall for the village, and an economic boost, and
there are a few highlights. On Saturday, there is the blessing an unveiling of a 1798 monument in the village - a symbolic recognition of the 220th anniversary of the Rebellion. Remember the lines of the song; “We took Camolin and Enniscorthy.” The traditional Patron takes place on Sunday, but a varied and interesting array of local events includes a medieval fair in the village and the local thespians are putting on their play ‘The Tinker’s Wedding’ in the local hall.
SAYING FAREWELL TO JOE
C
llr Joe Sullivan enjoyed his year as Cathaoirleach of Gorey Municipal District Council and he was in full control and protected his citizens with vigour, especially when Storm Ophelia created havoc in October and again when Storm Emma revisited in March. Cllr Sullivan was modest when it came to these freak of nature events, but his highlights included the completion of the pier at Courtown, “We struggled to get it over the line, but we got there,” he stressed. The Ramsfort Trail that will enhance amenities about the town, and the opening of
Scholars Way. He thanked his fellow councillors and officials at the annual general meeting of the council last week, but he also reminded members that ten new houses are under construction at Creagh, and another ten are progressing well at Baile Eoghain. Cllr John Hegarty congratulated Cllr Sullivan for his year as chairman and he described it as “a positive year” although some events were not planned, a reference to the storms. Cllr Malcolm Byrne said his party colleague was “a fair chairman and very interested in Gorey district.”
Cllr Fionntán Ó Súlleabháin thanked Cllr Sullivan and the officials but hoped that more could be done about housing. Director of Services, Eddie Taaffe, thanked him for his time and making himself available at every job. He acknowledged that the position (of Cathaoirleach) can be very time consuming. “You were very much pro-Gorey,” Mr. Taaffe added. Cllr Pip Breen said it is a credit to yourself (Cllr Sullivan) and family and you had a job to do and you did it extremely well.
here isn’t too much noise coming from those secure in their seats at the Boundary Commission’s review of the boundaries, but the new Cathaoirleach of Gorey Municipal District, Cllr John Hegarty, has the matter at the top of his agenda and he described the transfer of Ballycanew, Ballygarrett and Ferns into the Enniscorthy district as “a poor decision and not a good decision for Gorey district.” In an amazing decision Wexford’s tidiest village, Ballycanew, will have its affairs transferred to Enniscorthy, even though it is only about five kilometres from Gorey where most of its citizens do their main business. Cahore and Ballygarrett are vibrant communities where the Tidy Towns’ effort is exemplary, and the community is not far behind Ballycanew in
the county table. It is one of the North Wexford areas that has benefitted from the 2K Clean Up, a successful project that is not adopted by Enniscorthy, despite frequent support for an extension of the community project by Bunclody-based Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy. Gorey Municipal District Council has shown great interest in the Norman Way and the unique position of Ferns Castle and its ecclesiastical past and that project will become separated from Gorey in the new arrangement. It is not that the Enniscorthy members and officials will be less enthusiastic about providing what’s best for Ferns; it is a worry about the budget being stretched to support an increased number of projects planned for the new communities. No animosity is directed towards Enniscorthy in any
way, it is a matter of geography and culture and the tradition in which the people of Ballycanew and Ballygarrett, and to a reduced extent, Ferns, go about their daily work, rest and play. A new electoral division called Kilmuckridge will be added to the system, however, the four members from Kilmuckridge will be brought together with six members from Enniscorthy, and all ten members will sit at the same monthly meetings and be governed by the same team of officials. Enniscorthy will take on a massive task in tackling coastal erosion, but the coastline will require extra funding. More work will be landed on the desk at Enniscorthy and budgetary reductions will apply in Gorey, so any attempt to create boundary changes of balance and equality, will be offset by geographical isolation for some villages.

HATCH LAB OPENING MARKS IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD FOR GOREY The first in a range of ambitious projects being developed by Wexford County Council to attract investment and jobs to Wexford became reality when outgoing Council Chairman John Hegarty officially opened the 5000 sq ft Hatch Lab in Gorey.
T
he Hatch Lab is located on the M11 Business Campus less than 1km from the M11 Motorway and offers incubation and co-working facilities for fledgling micro-enterprises within the innovation and technology sector. The state-of-theart facilities have been modelled on similar world-class innovation centres both in Ireland and abroad, with the result that clients and companies from across the south-east region who choose to locate in the Hatch Lab can enjoy services such as hot-desks, meeting space, joint administrative services and high-speed broadband within a unique co-working and start-up environment. The building has access to up to 1GB of speed and boasts an impressive array of essential facilities, including meeting rooms, conference room, coffee dock and canteen, shared printing services, skype booths, relaxations areas and private lockers. Users of the Hatch Lab can choose from a va-
riety of charges, with Hot Desking available from €15 per day and Private Desk from €190 a month. This world-class facility has been developed in a unique tri-party arrangement, with private investment by Redmond
Brothers of Gorey, support from Bank of Ireland through a €1m partnership agreement over a 5-year period to provide people, events and marketing, while a lease by Wexford County Council of a portion of the building space provides assurance of financial

return to the investors during the early years of the project. Enniscorthy Enterprise and Technology Centre supplies the Hatch Lab with administration and operation services, while other supporting agencies include Wexford Local Enterprise Office, Enterprise Ireland, IDA, South East Business Innovation Centre, National Digital Research Centre, Gorey Chamber of Commerce and Guinness Enterprise Centre. At the opening Councillor John Hegarty said. “We’re delighted to say that the Hatch Lab is enjoying considerable success and has already hosted a number of exciting companies such as Abodoo.com – now a HPSU with Enterprise Ireland, WliderWander.com, Schedulie.com, Detour Guide, Infinite Zero and VoiNext” said Councillor Hegarty. “The Hatch Lab is one of a number of property solutions investments planned by Wexford County Council for each of our main towns”, said Tom Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council. He added “Just like our other property solutions, the Hatch Lab has been designed and constructed to meet the very high standards of today’s busi-

ness investor. We fully expect that these new high-quality commercial office and manufacturing facilities, together with County Wexford’s other attractions of a skilled and talented workforce, affordable housing, enviable amenities, excellent motorway access and high quality of life, will encourage businesses to strongly consider Wexford as a viable and attractive option, when seeking a location for new investment or expansion of existing operations.” The Hatch Lab is the first
building in Wexford County Council’s ambitious property solutions development programme to come to fruition and is based in the first of three 36,000 sq ft buildings being developed by Redmond Construction in the brand new M11 Business Campus in Gorey town. In response to strong interest, plans are being developed to extend the space by another 5,000 sq feet to include private office space for small teams of 4-6 people.

CO. COUNCIL DIARY
PADDY STRUGGLES TO PROTECT HIS MODESTY AS COLLEAGUES STEAL HIS TRAVELLER CLOTHES
P
addy Kavanagh has made his name by highlighting the problems caused by some traveller families in parts of his Enniscorthy District. Paddy has never been afraid to speak his mind on the issue and while others ‘tut tutted’ and made comments under the breaths, Paddy battled on. He told stories of decent people being terrorised in their homes, landowners being tormented by illegal dumping, roads being closed illegally to facilitate traveller ‘pastimes’, the list is endless. He often cut a lonely figure as he battled on behalf of the settled community who had to deal with travellers whom he believed were a law onto themselves. Paddy didn’t wear a jacket or indeed a tie to the June meeting of the Co. Council and by the end of the session he must have feared that he would be without his shirt and trousers as well so intent were other councillors on stealing his clothes on the travel-
ler issue. George Lawlor led the way highlighting a case in Wexford town where the dumping of rubbish by the trailer load had been highlighted for a period of two years but nothing had been done by the Council. It all came to a head recently when civic minded local residents organised a clean-up of the estate. They power-washed, lifted litter and even removed the rubbish which had been generated by this particular family. But their efforts were in vain because a couple of days later another trailer load of rubbish was on site. What was the Council doing about it? asked George. If it was a single mother who was the tenant of the house the Council would not be slow to take action, he suggested, but there appeared to be a different law for travellers and they did not seem to be subject to the anti-social behaviour code which was supposed to govern all Council tenants. Director John Carley, the
man who has overall responsibility for managing the council’s housing stock and its tenants, no easy job, tried to explain that these things took time. The Council was on the case but he rejected the idea that he had been dealing with it for two years. But George was having none of it. He whipped his smart phone out of his pocket checked his emails and produced the evidence that he had made contact with the Director almost exactly two years ago. Director Carley insisted he was taking the matter seriously and he was concerned over the plight of the residents but again insisted that these things were complicated and took time. Larry O’Brien questioned why it could possibly take the Council’s solicitors two years to get a case in to court. He wanted to know how this could possibly happen. Michael Sheehan was happy that the Council was taking the problems of other tenants seriously. He then expected action to
deal with the appalling anti=social behaviour in the Irishtown area of New Ross where some tenants had horses in the front gardens and in their back gardens as well. Could the long delay in dealing with the problem be caused by the council taking the wrong action in the courts? Solicitor Councillor Lisa McDonald shared her advice for free suggesting that an eviction application was the way to go. ‘Throw them out’ said Frank Staples as Davy Hynes joined the chorus of those expressing concern over the plight of the decent people who were subjected to the appalling behaviour of this family. ‘Welcome to my world’ declared Paddy Kavanagh, as he buttoned up his shirt before adjourning for tea hoping to avoid being left completely naked by the enthusiasm of so many of his colleagues to sing from his wellworn hymn sheet on the traveller issue.
Tom’s bid to halt purchase of Israeli Drones is shot down
‘H
ow many votes did you get in Israel?’ asked Robbie Ireton in a question directed at Sinn Fein’s Tom Forde who had proposed a motion calling on the Council to write to Minister Paul Kehoe to express disappointment and frustration regarding the purchase of Drones from an Israeli company for the Irish Defence Forces. Tom wanted the Department to stop purchasing these weapons systems and all forms of military equipment from Israeli companies ‘as they are live tested on civilians by a state that has killed many unarmed protestors’ Tom described Paul Kehoe’s actions as immoral. It might be an international issue but Mr Kehoe was a Wexford TD representing Wexford people.
Paddy Kavanagh wanted evidence to support the claims made in the motion, Malcolm Byrne wanted changes to the wording and then he might consider supporting it, Robbie Ireton still wondered how many of the councillors had secured election with votes from Israel and Tony Dempsey really did want to support the motion but not without a detailed debate. That needed time and with the clock against them he suggested that Tom defer the matter for a month. Under fire from all sides, even if it did not involve Israeli weapons, Tom was left with no option but to retreat in the hope that by next month he will have neutralised some of the firepower of his opponents. However, it will probably take more than a month’s break to silence Robbie.

Drip, drip speed limits for housing estates
A
uniform speed limit regime will not operate in housing estates across the county when updated speed limits are implemented from next September. There are about one thousand housing estates in the county ranging in size from estates with three or
four houses to those with hundreds of homes. However, only a quarter of them will be covered by the 30kph speed limit in the first phase of the new speed limits programme. Cllr. George Lawlor had argued that all housing estates should be covered from day
one so that motorists would know exactly what to expect once they entered an estate. However, the scale of the work involved in this means that they will have to wait until the programme is reviewed again in eighteen months’ time.

he Co. Council’s Housing Committee is to consider what action to take against Council tenants who have repeated chimney fires in their homes. Director of Services John Carley brought a report on chimney fires to the June meeting of the Council which revealed that there were 92 chimney fires in Council houses last year with repairs costing €116,000. Already in the first quarter of this year repairs as a result of 8 fires have cost € 42,000. Councillors Malcolm Byrne and Larry O’Brien were not happy with the proposed plans to deal with tenants where there had been a number of chimney fires and the matter is now to be discussed by the Council’s Housing Committee.

PLENTY OF ELECTRICITY, BUT NOT EVERYWHERE
C
o. Wexford as a whole has plenty of spare electricity capacity to cater for considerable inward investment. However, some parts of the south of the county do have a capacity issue and the problem is being compounded by damaged to the infrastructure in the area caused primarily by sea salt which drifts in the air from the coast. ESB Networks representatives Carmel O’Connor and Dan Mernagh gave an upbeat presentation on the electricity supply situation to members of the Co. Council highlighting massive investment in various infrastructural projects over recent years and the spending of more than €4m on overhead wires and
poles. There has been a big increase in demand for electricity in the past year with the number of new connections increasing by 31% in the North Wexford area and by 26% in the rest of the county. But the upbeat message was that there was capacity in the system to facilitate future developments and Ms O’Connor encouraged the Council to keep the company informed of development plans so that they could ensure sufficient capacity into the future. However, when Cllr. Jim Moore, who had originally asked that the company be brought before the Council to provide
an update on the electricity supply situation in the county, asked detailed questions about the situation in South Wexford and the regular outages which companies operating in the area face, a slightly less rosy picture emerged. It was acknowledged that there may be some capacity issues in South East Wexford and the problem of salt damaging the infrastructure emerged as a reason for some of the regular outages which have plagued business in the area this year. Cllr. Moore is now to have a private meeting with the company to deal with a wide range of issues affecting that part of the county.
Penalty points for dumpers
C
o, Councillors have backed a proposal from Cllr. Jim Moore recommending to the Department of the Environment that the possible imposing of penalty points on the owner of a vehicle from
which litter is thrown and the impounding of vehicles where illegal dumping is involved. Cllr. Moore highlighted the fact that illegal dumping g was taking place on a commercial level in some areas and he
contrasted the penalties under the Litter Act with the penalties imposed on an individual found with a single fish which had been caught illegally.

GER WALSH IS TOO MUCH MONEY BEING SPENT ON THE FIT-OUT OF COUNCIL HOUSES?

Many people are desperate get their foot in the door of a Council house or one controlled by the Voluntary Housing Agencies which are playing an ever increasing role in the provision of social housing. They are therefore very annoyed when they see local authority houses locked up for years with no one occupying them. CAMOLIN PARISH HOMECOMING - July 6th, 7th & 8th
T
he International Meeting of Families is a gathering organised by the Church and occurs every three years; the first gathering took place in Rome, back in 1994. The most recent gathering 2015 took place in Philadelphia and the next gathering is scheduled to take place in Dublin, from 22 to 26 August 2018. Pope Francis will make the first papal visit here in 40 years. This in effect was the catalyst which prompted the idea of holding the ‘Camolin Parish Homecoming’. For some time previous, Fr Joe Kavanagh P.P. had floating around in his mind the idea of holding a Camolin Parish Homecoming - a time when people within the parish and surrounding area could once again mingle and meet with those who they rarely, if ever see, people who have over the years lost touch with the parish and community, people who may now reside in various parts of Ireland, even in different countries such as England America, Australia, Canada, etc. A committee consisting of Fr. Kavanagh, John Doyle of Clonhenritt, Terry McCann, Ballinclare and John Kavanagh of Ballyshaun was hastily assembled and following a series of meetings over the winter months a draft schedule of events was prepared.
The official launch of the homecoming will commence on Friday evening the 6th July at 19:00 with Mass celebrated by Bishop Denis Brennan at the Church Of The Immaculate Conception, Camolin. Immediately afterwards the Camolin National School Past Pupils reunion will be held in the Parish Hall with the main focus on the class of ’68, however all pupils of the ‘OLD SCHOOL’ are encouraged to attend and are very welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity for people to catch up with pals you haven’t seen in a long while. There will also be a Photographic display and some light refreshments on the night.
SATURDAY 7TH JULY Saturday is a day packed with something for everyone – Beginning at 09:00a.m., with an early morning 1798 Bus Tour/Field Trip. This tour will take you to nearby locations associated with the 1798 rebellion. A drive by the former home of Lieutenant Thomas Bookey, leader of the Camolin Cavalry who was killed on the 26th May 1798; the Fr. Murphy Centre Boolavogue, a rural setting, this house and farmyard were once home to Fr. Murphy, immortalised in the popular ballad, ‘’Boolavogue’’. Fr Murphy got caught up in the 1798 Rebellion and was killed by Crown forces after a military

tribunal. Here, the house and yard have been restored and span a 250 year period embracing both the historical and rural aspects of the area. This will be followed by a visit to a site of a 1798 battle scene and finally a stop off at Ballymore Historic Features which celebrates and emphasises the past in a refreshing and unique way. It encompasses many features including the museum of local and family history spanning over 300 years, dairy and farming display, 1798 memorabilia room and the Phoebe Donovan art gallery. On the surrounding grounds you will see the ruins of a Norman castle dating back to the 14th century, Ballymore Church and graveyard (1869), and a former 1798 rebel camp site. Beginning at 10:00 is the ‘Kids Novelty Sports Morning.’ If you are looking for an activity jam-packed morning with laughter and nostalgia? Our ‘Kids Novelty Sports Event is it! A throwback to your youth (cough) and the days when flared jeans/ platform shoes were all the rage, this activity will have you fondly remembering those old school days when all you had to worry about was who sat beside you in class and who played games with you at lunchtime. In conjunction with the ‘Homecoming’, Camolin Celtic
F.C. & St Patricks G.A.A Club have kindly offered to facilitate a ‘Kids Novelty Sports Day Event’ so that you can sit back and relive those glorious bygone days again. The best part is all you have to do is show up with your children and the rest will be taken care of. Activities include all the
classics – egg & spoon races, 3 legged races, sack races, wheelbarrow races, hopscotch, skipping etc. but we couldn’t resist also including some favourite team challenges for added novelty and excitement. Afternoon events will begin with the unveiling of a ‘Wall Plaque’ to the memory of Mi-

The Chronicle chael Joseph O’Loughlin ‘HERO OF SEA DISASTER’. Twenty nine year old Michael, a native of Camolin was Chief wireless operator on the British steamer, the S.S. Vestris, which sank in the Atlantic off the Virginia coast on the 12 Nov 1928 with the loss of over 100 lives. Michael remained at his post to the very end, trying to get one last appeal for help from his exhausted radio set. His parents Michael O’Loughlin and Frances (nee Meagher), four brothers Bernard, Francis, John and Dermot and sister Mary were living in the village of Camolin. His father Michael O’Loughlin, served 26 years as an R.I.C. Officer in Coolgreany before retiring on pension in 1909, when he received the appointment of Subpost master in Camolin. All six children attended school in Camolin. Following this we move along to our second ‘blessing & unveiling’ ceremony of the day this time to the memory of those
who took part and lost their lives during the 1798 Uprising. 2018 marks the 220th anniversary of the Rebellion. Proceedings will commence at the entrance to the GAA/Soccer Grounds with Pike-Men assembling and then marching along the street of Camolin to the 1798 memorial adjacent to the present 1916 memorial. Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society will be in attendance whose purpose is to promote and educate members of the public on all aspects of County Wexford’s military history, heritage and culture. This group will add a uniqueness and entertaining element to this event. Their members provide fully dressed and armed re-enactors for this period; 1798 Rebellion Pikemen, 18th Century Crown Forces (Redcoats). It is also hoped to have neighbouring Pike-men in attendance. Saturday evening’s entertainment is a ‘SEISIUN’ – featuring Celtic Roots. Celtic Roots from the Bree catchment area were formed in 1998 with the objec-
tive of promoting Irish Culture at home and abroad. The founders Kay and Liam McKelvie brought together a talented cast of Irish dancers, singers, musicians and storytellers and produced many exciting shows based on Irish Culture. SUNDAY 8TH JULY Sunday’s activities will commence at 14:00 with the Annual Patron and blessing of the graves at Camolin cemetery. This is the annual day of remembering loved ones who have passed to the next life. This will be followed immediately by a MEDIEVAL FAIR featuring ‘DÉISE MEDIEVAL’ who were founded in 2013 are a living history society based in Waterford, bringing to life the crafts and skills of the early to mid medieval period, encompassing Viking and Norman eras. The fair comprising a tented village with various stalls where people can handle and try on weapons and armour. Demonstrations of weaving, spinning,
cooking, daily life and other crafts in Medieval times and chat to the re-enactors as they go about their business. Also fight demonstrations and a display of how the various weapons are used. Sunday evening at 19:00 will commence with ‘Traditional Sunday Evening Devotions, will be offered for present and former members of Camolin Parish. Benediction – in the traditional Latin apart from’ Litany of Praise’. This will serve as a nostalgic journey for our older generation and perhaps a glimpse of how things were in the past for younger people. At 20:00 in Camolin Hall ‘The Tinker’s Wedding’ By John Millington Synge will be performed by the Ballyoughter Drama Group and directed by Jimmy Kavanagh, is a play by the Irish playwright J. M. Synge, whose main characters - as the title suggests - are Irish Tinkers. It is set on a roadside near a chapel in rural Ireland and premiered 11 November 1909.

Footwear Allowance is a means-tested once-off payment aimed at helping families with these costs to alleviate pressures at back to school time,” Minister Kehoe said. “The Government is able to provide this increase thanks to our recovering economy, driven by increasing employment. This means more money to improve social services and social supports. Fine Gael is determined to use the benefits of our recovering economy to support those who need it most.” The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is available to primary and secondary school students and is paid at a rate of

he end of a Mayoral term is always busy as the outgoing Office holders tries to reach on as many ceremonies as possible before making way for their replacement on the final Monday in June. Each Mayoral term ends with the Barry Day ceremony before the annual meeting the following night but in the weeks leading up to that the Mayor hosts a seemingly endless round of Civic and Mayoral receptions to honour achievements by individuals and groups in the area. Jim Moore has been no exception as he handed out presentations, made speeches and hosted a variety of groups over the final weeks of his term. He was surrounded by rugby players from Wexford Wanderers at the heritage Park as he marked their Division 2B wins for the Firsts and Seconds. He was back in the Heritage Park to honour the Wexford Panto Group on reaching the grand old age of 50. He had a reception too for Jackie Carthy an All-Ireland winning athlete and the members of the Ballycogley

Did You Know? Solar light brightness is measured in “Lumens”, higher the lumen, brighter the light. Place your solar lights where they can get sunlight during the day A dirty solar panel will not fully charge the battery and will shorten the battery life. Clean regularly. For better solar light performance, we advise to replace batteries annually. We have it covered! Replacement batteries available instore.
