Michigan credit union’s comprehensive course empowers participants to conquer debt, elevate credit scores
LANSING, Mich. — The transformative, life-changing power of LAFCU’s comprehensive personal finance course was evident during the graduation ceremony of its Pathway to Financial Transformation 2023-2024 cohort at the Alfreda Schmidt Southside Community Center.
Graduates, amid an audience of family, friends and LAFCU staff, in bright blue caps and gowns, proudly shared and joyfully recounted their remarkable journeys and accomplishments during the eightmonth, 16-module course. Each student had a unique story and different reason for signing up and completing the course, yet they shared a common aspiration to enhance their financial well-being and improve the financial futures of their loved ones.
"I moved from Mexico in 2011, intending to stay
just five years, but our circumstances changed," said Maria Espinosa, a graduate of the course. "The culture of retirement and savings differs greatly between Mexico and the United States. In Mexico, living paycheck to paycheck is the only way of life – no designated savings or long-term thinking. The Pathway
course has helped me understand the importance of planning for retirement. Despite enjoying my work as a chemist, I had never seriously considered retirement plans until now. It's a cultural shift I'm adapting to, and I'm so grateful to Shelia and LAFCU for helping me navigate this next phase of life."
The Pathway to Financial Transformation course was specifically designed to span eight months to show students the tangible benefits of making changes in their financial behavior and habits.
“Each student shows up with their own story and financial history,” said Shelia Scott, community financial education & business development officer who led the course. “We don’t judge anyone – we meet them where they’re at on their financial journey. Together, we navigate each set of circumstances and personal goals. We aim to cultivate healthier financial habits and foster continuous improvement and set each participant up for success

Afew months ago, she became the youngest black person in U.S. history to get admitted into medical school at the age of 13. The Fort Worth, Texas area girl has been accepted into the University of Alabama's Medical School. Reportedly, she will start her medical training in the fall of 2024.
The teenager also holds two other records in addition to this major accomplishment.
She holds a second record for being the second youngest person ever (among all races) to get accepted into medical school. Alena also holds a third record for being the youngest person ever to work as an intern at NASA.
Some folks have taken to calling her "Doogie Howser, M.D. -2.0" in honor of the ABC sitcom that ran from 1989 to 1993 about a teenage physician (played by Neil Patrick Harris) and how he juggled the practice of medicine with the everyday challenges of being a teenager.
Alena was a college junior at Arizona State University and at Alabama's Oakwood University when she decided to apply for early acceptance into medical school at the University of Alabama. She was accepted in May of this year.
Alena has her own Instagram account called "thebrownstemgirl." As a minor celebrity, she has partnered with a Barbie YouTube channel and is now hoping that she will have a chance to go to space.
As a child prodigy, Alena reportedly began reading chapter books when she was three years old and took high school courses at age 11. She also enrolled in two colleges at age 12 to earn two separate degrees.

And now Lansing will lead the nation in electric vehicle technology - with battery production at Ultium ($2.7 billion investment), EV production at LGR ($500 million investment), and boosting EV charging infrastructure through a USDOT grant ($8 million).
I’m grateful to GM for continuing to recognize the incredible talent of our UAW workers and the opportunities here in Lansing. When Phyllis Brooks came to a local hospital due to shortness of breath, she was transferred to McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, where further testing confirmed her diagnosis of a heart condition, called cardiac amyloidosis.
Cardiac amyloidosis is caused by a buildup of protein that can impair the heart’s ability to function normally, leading to heart failure symptoms.
“During the cardiac tests, I was told I was going into A-Fib (atrial fibrillation), and I hadn’t
even known it,” said Brooks.
Because of her symptoms — such as sudden weight loss, hair loss, and shortness of breath — and it aligning with her diagnosis, Brooks saw Dr. Awais Kang and Alison Smith, PA, at the McLaren Greater Lansing Congestive Heart Failure Clinic and was told she was a candidate to receive the CardioMEMS device.
CardioMEMS HF System allows providers to monitor and treat patients before overt symptoms occur. The system features a sensor that is implanted in the
pulmonary artery (PA) during a nonsurgical procedure to directly measure PA pressure.
“With Phyllis’s diagnosis, it causes her heart wall to become thicker and people with this diagnosis can fill up with fluid quickly, so traditional methods of treatment for heart failure don’t work as well for this diagnosis,” said Smith.

Tackling homelessness requires a variety of strategies to help those affected. While shelters provide a safe haven, residents need more than just a roof over their heads. Addressing some unique needs in homeless shelters can improve support and help residents regain stability. Look at these essential services and items that can make a significant difference.
Mental health is a significant concern for many unhoused individuals. Access to counseling services, mental health workshops, and support groups can be life-changing. These resources offer a safe space for residents to share their experiences, seek guidance, and find the emotional strength to move forward.
Many overlook the unique need for safe and reliable childcare in homeless shelters. Access to childcare services allows parents to work, attend training programs, or participate in job interviews without worrying about their chil-
dren’s safety. By providing childcare options, shelters can support families in achieving stability and independence.
Finding stable employment is one of the most empowering steps toward regaining independence. Shelters that offer programs for resume building, interview preparation, job search assistance, and vocational training equip residents with the tools they need to succeed. These services can open doors to new opportunities and provide a pathway to
financial stability.
While basic toiletries such as soap and toothpaste are essential, shelters often face a high demand for specialized items. Feminine hygiene products and antibiotic ointment are necessary items that people rarely include in hygiene kits. Ensuring residents have access to important items can help maintain their dignity and health.
Education is a powerful tool. Shel-
ters can significantly impact the future of residents by investing in their education and helping them build confidence and gain the skills needed to create brighter futures. Provide books, access to online courses, GED preparation materials, and tutoring services for children and adults.
Getting around can be a significant barrier for shelter residents. Providing bus passes, bicycles, or shuttle services can help residents get to work, medical appointments, and other essential destinations safely. These transportation options allow individuals to maintain their daily routines and attend important engagements.
Supporting homeless shelters goes beyond monetary donations. Consider donating the items and services mentioned above to make a tangible impact on residents’ lives. Your contribution can help individuals and families transition out of temporary shelters and into stable housing.

The field of law encompasses various professions dedicated to upholding justice and maintaining social order. While many roles necessitate extensive education, several essential careers do not require a traditional degree. Do you want to contribute to the legal system without undertaking a lengthy or costly educational commitment? If so, consider these in-demand careers in law that don’t require a degree.
Paralegals play a crucial role in supporting attorneys by conducting legal research, drafting documents, and managing case files. They often assist in preparing for trials, hearings, and meetings by organizing evidence and coordinating witness schedules. Depending on where you live, you may start working as a paralegal after earning a certificate, which generally takes about a year to complete. Michigan, specifical-
ly, does not have minimum education requirements for paralegals.
Paralegals may work in various settings, including law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies. Their expertise in legal procedures and documentation is invaluable to attorneys, allowing them to focus on more complex legal issues.
Court reporters are responsible for creating accurate verbatim transcripts of legal proceedings, such as trials, depositions, and hearings. Their accurate records contribute to the legal system’s transparency and integrity. This in-demand career in law doesn’t require a degree, but training to become a court reporter typically involves completing a postsecondary certificate program.
An attractive earning potential is one of the top reasons to become a court reporter. Court reporters in the US earn
an average of $60,000 a year, and they have the potential to earn more through freelancing, earning more credentials, gaining specialized skills, and other factors.
Bailiffs maintain order in courtrooms and ensure the safety of all participants during legal proceedings. They are responsible for enforcing courtroom rules, assisting judges, and
escorting witnesses and defendants. With on-the-job training or a certification in criminal justice, you can become a bailiff and contribute to upholding the decorum and security of the courtroom.
Working closely with judges, attorneys, and court staff, bailiffs play a vital role in the judicial process. Their presence helps prevent disruptions and ensures that legal proceedings run smoothly.
Police officers are sworn to protect and serve their communities by enforcing laws and maintaining public order. They respond to emergencies, conduct investigations, and patrol neighborhoods to prevent crime.
