Elaine Brown (March 2, 1943)
Elaine Brown was born in North Philadelphia and raised by her mother. Although she grew up in a singleparent home and experienced economic hardship, Elaine had the opportunity to attend a private school where she participated in extracurricular activities such as classical piano and ballet. She was noted to have had many white friends because of this. After high school, Brown briefly attended Temple University before withdrawing to pursue a music career in Los Angeles. While there, she enrolled in University of California, Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, Brown became involved with Jay Richard Kennedy, a music executive who educated her on capitalism, communism, and social justice movements. Eventually Brown became active in the Black Liberation Movement. After their breakup, Brown began working for the African American newspaper Harambee. She attended her first Black Panther meeting after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968.
As a member of the Black Panther Party, Brown helped set up the first Free Breakfast for Children program in Los
Angeles as well as its first Free Busing to Prisons Program and Free Legal Aid Program. Soon after, she became the editor of the publication The Black Panther for the South California Branch. In 1971, Brown became a member of the Party’s Central Committee as Minister of Information, replacing Eldridge Cleaver, who had been expelled. In 1973, Brown was commissioned to record some songs by Founder and Minister of Defense, Huey P. Newton that resulted in the album Until We’re Free.
Brown was chosen by Newton to lead the BPP in 1974 when he moved to Cuba to avoid criminal charges. She led the Party from 1974 until 1977. During her leadership, Brown chaired the successful political campaign of Lionel Wilson, Oakland’s first African American mayor, and she founded the Panther Liberation School. She left her leadership position in the BPP in 1978 after Huey Newton’s return and after he ordered the beating of a female Panther. Her decision was driven by her rejection of the negative attitudes toward women in the party. Brown moved to Los Angeles to raise her daughter.
Brown’s later activism included radical
prison reform and providing educational resources for African American children living in poverty. In 2007, she declared herself a candidate for the Green party in the 2008 presidential election. She left the party later that year because it was dominated by white people who, in her opinion, were not really trying
to effect change or help her do so. Presently, Brown lectures frequently on prison reform at conferences, colleges, and universities.

Essential Gear That Every Fabrication Shop Needs
Over time, many fabrication shops try to expand their services and increase production. Keeping up with the competition requires having the right equipment in place. Stock your inventory with the best equipment by reading this list of essential gear that every fabrication shop needs.
Stone-Cutting Equipment
The most important gear in a fabrication shop is the stone-cutting equipment, which includes routers and bridge saws. Saw blades come in various sizes and cut through many different types of stone materials. Routers are used for detailing and shaping stone edges, while bridge saws make precise cuts on large slabs of stone.
Choosing the right cutting tools is critical for making accurate cuts to stone to accomplish the overall vision of your project. This is a key reason that one of the most important things to know when buying used stone fabrication equipment is to always inspect the machines. Get

Material Lifting Equipment
Your shop also needs the right gear for moving workpieces to and from your cutting tools. Moving heavy slabs of stone requires specialized lifting equipment. A forklift or overhead crane is necessary to move and position large slabs onto workstations. Choosing the
right lifting gear is crucial to workplace efficiency and safety.
Without using the right lifting gear, the workpiece may fall over or put excessive strain on the person carrying it. Unfortunately, both scenarios can end in injury, so always have the right material handling gear in your workshop before a project.
Finishing Tools

Ms. Tasha James was also among the women honored as the Zeta of the Year. She has held many seats within her local Zeta chapter, including her current role
of secretary. Tasha is always willing to serve and lend a helping hand to those in need.
The essential gear that every fabrication shop needs includes the right tools for putting the finishing touches on workpieces. This equipment will help you refine your workpiece, so the final results are perfect. To create a smooth and polished finish on stone surfaces, fabrication shops need a variety of finishing tools.
The most common types of tools for finishing projects include grinders, polishers, and sanders. Grinders smooth out rough edges and surfaces, while polishers use a combination of abrasives and water to achieve a high-gloss finish. A sander is essential for removing scratches and imperfections from stone surfaces. Outfitting your fabrication shop with the right equipment is essential for success in today’s competitive stone products industry. Whether you’re inaugurating a new shop or revamping an existing one, you can invest in advanced, efficient stone fabrication equipment today.

How To Prove Your Relationship Is Real for a K1 Visa
Love is a wondrous thing. People from different walks of life can meet and fall in love despite their differences. Often, love leads to marriage. When a US citizen falls in love with and wants to marry someone from outside of the US, they often bring their fiancé to the nation. The official name of a fiancé visa is the K1 visa. To apply for and successfully receive a K1 visa, you must provide various pieces of evidence about your identities and relationship. Part of that evidence includes proving your relationship is real. Keep reading to learn how to demonstrate a genuine relationship for a K1 visa. Keep Time-Stamped Communication Evidence
Many people around the world want to obtain US citizenship, and they’re willing to commit fraud to get it. Immigration attempts to handle those fraudulent applications, which is why providing evidence is so important during the K1 visa application. Timestamped communication is especially important evidence because it allows application officials to see the lifetime of your relationship. If you can provide time-stamped communication, such as screenshots of text messages or video calls from various points throughout your relationship, officials can see your visa request is legitimate.
Take Date- and Location-Stamped Photos
Another supporting document you need for a K1 visa is evidence that you’ve met in person in the last two years. Date- and location-stamped photos are the best forms of evidence for this meeting to bring alongside additional proof that your relationship is real. Real couples spend time together on different dates and at different locations when possible. Just remember to snap some photos, and you should be good to go!
If your phone or camera doesn’t capture date and location, you can still use a social media site’s time-accurate filters to add those details in a reliable way.
Provide Receipts from Couples’ Activities
You don’t have to take a photo together every time you get together for K1 visa evidence. Immigration accepts other types of evidence that demonstrate you’ve spent time together over the course of your relationship. You can provide receipts from couples’ activities as additional proof of spending time together and the reality of your relationship. Even seemingly small receipts, such as those you get from buying two movie tickets, are valid, along with bigger receipts, such as flights together or an engagement ring purchase.

McLaren Greater Lansing Launches Nursing Internship Program
“We understand the importance of work-life balance, which is why this program supports the flexibility and opportunity our students need to be successful,”
For those interested in a nursing career in the Lansing area, there is now a unique opportunity to gain direct patient care experience while completing your nursing degree.
“We are excited to offer a paid student nursing internship for those currently enrolled in an undergraduate nursing program,” said Jodi Stein, chief nursing officer at McLaren Greater Lansing. “Our future nurses will gain useful bedside patient experience outside of the classroom, as well as clinical time. We understand that with national nursing shortages, hospitals must partner with our local colleges and universities to work creatively together to better prepare our students and increase the pipeline of future nurses to support our community needs.”
Internships allow nursing students the opportunity to complement their schoolbased theory learning by developing necessary clinical experience and skills under the supervision of nursing professionals. This opportunity also enables future nurses to network with potential leaders and colleagues and
secure their first nursing position during training.
“The nursing internship program not only familiarizes students with dayto-day aspects in a clinical setting but
get direct exposure to different nursing units and shifts, and interact with providers, peers, and patients to better understand the rigors involved in the registered nursing role.
To qualify for the nursing internship
also allows them a head start in seeking experiences in nursing units that peak their clinical interest,” said Stein.
Nurse interns will work alongside registered nurses performing their daily patient care responsibilities. They will
program, students must be actively enrolled in a nursing program and have completed their second semester of nursing clinicals. Those who qualify can apply online. Nurse interns can choose from 6-, 8- or 12-hour shifts, including both day and night shifts.
“We understand the importance of worklife balance, which is why this program supports the flexibility and opportunity our students need to be successful,” said Stein.
While future nurses need the foundational education that comes from undergraduate nursing programs, internships allow the student to gain real-time experience in their future career field. McLaren has been a strong supporter of nursing education and has worked collaboratively to ensure that nursing students have a great learning experience during their clinical time.
“Nursing internships can test your clinical skills outside of a structured classroom setting and are unique in helping build professional relationships and knowledge that you can carry over into your first nursing role,” said Shannon Scott, MSN, RN, nursing program director at Lansing Community College. “We’re excited to partner with McLaren to offer this opportunity to our students.”

Brilliant Tips and Tricks for Better Baked Goods
Baking is an art, and the wrong practices can generate unsatisfactory goods. Fortunately, preventative measures can help your treats taste amazing. Check out these brilliant tips and tricks for better-baked goods below!
Use Room-Temperature Ingredients
When a recipe requires roomtemperature ingredients, just comply. Cold ingredients like butter won’t cream with sugar, resulting in a lumpy mess. Conversely, overly warm ingredients can change the texture of baked goods, making them coarse instead of light and fluffy. If you plan on baking treats, take ingredients out of the fridge, and let them sit for at least one hour. If you’re on a time crunch, microwave some ingredients (i.e., butter or milk) at low power for short intervals.
Use High-Quality Ingredients
Various brands of butter, milk, and flour have different levels of moisture, fat, and protein. Surprisingly, these variations can influence the outcome of baked goods. Use the brands the recipe inventor recommends, or find brands with high protein, fat, and moisture content.
Don’t Overmix Batters
When you add flour to batters, mixing encourages gluten development and creates chewy or tough textures. While chewy consistencies are favorable in cookies, they’re not favorable in cakes or muffins. Use a light hand with recipes, and don’t overmix batters!
Add Flavor Concentrates to Recipes
Some recipes can benefit from complex flavor profiles. However, trying new ingredients may change the composition of batters or doughs. When you want better tastes without compromising recipes, use flavor concentrates. These liquid additives enhance batters, doughs, icings, and much more. The best part is that concentrates come in a wide variety of options. In particular, the top flavor concentrates to use while baking include cinnamon roll, lemon poundcake, and glazed donut.
Bake With Unsalted Butter
Baking with unsalted butter is a brilliant tip for better baked goods because it helps you control flavor. Since most treats are sweet, you don’t want too much salt in batters or doughs. It may change the taste and consistency of baked goods. Therefore, use unsalted butter, incorporating salt only when necessary.
Always Bake in the Center of the Oven
There’s nothing worse than burnt or undercooked baked goods. Unfortunately, you risk unsatisfactory treats with incorrect pan placement. Consider the center of your oven as the go-to place for baked goods. The middle of ovens provides adequate heat circulation and helps everything bake evenly. Conversely, when you offcenter pans, one side of the baked good will cook faster than the other, resulting in overcooked and undercooked spots.
