Blast from the Past: entertainment through the years Story by Samantha Martin Photography by Samantha Martin and Brooklyn Norrell As we prepare to say goodbye to the class of 2017, let’s take a look back at the past trends in entertainment from their earlier years of school.

PRIMARY SCHOOL: 2004-2011

MIDDLE SCHOOL: 2011-2014

Students’ love affair with electronics started young. Kids played games on their Gameboys, and later on, DSis and Wiis. Students who preferred music to games listened to their MP3 players.

With the introduction of new Nintendo gaming systems, new games were also released. MarioKart and Wii Sports became game night staples, while games like Pokemon, which was originally popular on GameBoy, made the move over to DS. Heelys and Sketchers adorned everyone’s feet, while mustachethemed accesories were everywhere!

The release of the iPhone and other smartphones shaped the lives of students permanently. Suddenly communication and entertainment was closer to students’ fingertips than before!

Cell phone games were also popular, as the iPhone became more commonplace, with games such as Angry Birds, Farmville, and Candy Crush breaking out from nowhere into the mainstream. Many books popular among middle schoolers were adapted into films which includes The Book Thief, Coraline, The Golden Compass, and The Fault in Our Stars.

Gorillaz come back with power with ‘Humanz’ (Review) Review and photography by Olivia Boyd Gorillaz has got the power with their new album Humanz bringing in at home, watch TV, talk to people?” dance-ready music perfect for any rave. Albarn added, “I suppose we were imagining Donald Trump. Its flowing vibe show the lack of unity the world is going through kept fans on their toes, waiting and hoping that at the current moment, with the high-strung Cost: $14.99 on iTunes another album was in the works. While another sounds of “We got the Power” to the cool tones of record was released in 2011 with The Fall, it only “Out of Body,” the album is a beautiful mixture featured a limited selection that didn’t satisfy as of chaos and imagination. much as Plastic Beach had the year before. Once again Gorillaz has hit the nail head on creating, once again, a Alas after 5 years fans began to lose hope until an announcement great record that will surely be remembered. was made that there may be a new album in the works. Originally the new album was supposed to be released in August of 2016 but the release date was repeatedly pushed back. Finally, on the eve of Trump’s inauguration, fans got the first taste of the album with “Hallelujah Money,” featuring Benjamin Clementine. “Hallelujah Money” contains sultry sounds mixed with techno vibes, which creates an interesting mixture of sounds that sucked fans in and caused a frenzy. The record dropped officially on April 28, 2017. Humanz was born and it was better than expected. Packed full of featured artists and vibes that remind one of Plastic Beach except on steroids. In a BBC Radio 1 interview, Damon Albarn described the album with more specificity. “It’s ‘Humanz’ with a Z, which, simply put, [means] we’re in transition,” said Albarn. “We’re turning into something else. The album came from this dark fantasy that came into my head the beginning of last year, which was imagining the weirdest, unpredictable thing happening that changes everything about the world. enior Moments & Highlights

Scott Bowser Trevor Wright: The best moment of my high school career would be the Chambersburg football game junior year. It was my first time playing varsity football. Jadelyn Morningster: My favorite moment is probably my orchestra trip to Boston my 10th grade year. It was a fun trip as I’ve always wanted to go and explore Boston but it was also a good bonding experience with other kids in orchestra. Tianna Morresi: The best moment of my high school career would be when I decided to do what’s best for me and getting rid of negative influences/toxic people in my life. Makenzie Sayers: When my friend Noelle and I scared the crap out Miss Jones, a long term substitute last year for Mrs. McGeehan. We scared her actually more than once. It was fun! Grace Echevarria: Standing in the basketball student section this year [and] encouraging the players. [There] was a close game and we were chanting “C-C-C-C-LUV,” the whole gym was roaring and [we] were out of our seats jumping for our team. It gave me goosebumps. Ben Milligan: Making it to the state final four in basketball. Sydney Purcell: The best moment of my high school career would be going to the Rachel’s Challenge assembly and realizing how important my friends are and how much they have helped me grow into the person I am. Colton Sweeney: When the baseball team went to South Carolina; we were wild.

Makenzie Sayers

Molly Marra: Being Homecoming Queen/ being on court. All the girls were so kind and the pep rally, homecoming game & homecoming dance was special and a memory I’ll cherish forever. The whole town and school was supportive and kind. Ellie Tate: The Friday night football games, I loved the atmosphere of the crowd or basketball games and cheering on my friends, or crushes! It was always a fun time especially when we played CV, because the stakes are higher and everyone’s hearts are in it. Griffin O’Hagan: When my current girlfriend said she would go out with me. I was so worried that she wouldn’t and was ready for it. Maria Acuna: My most memorable moment was all the college acceptances I have received. Watch or Read?

If your summers are generally spent without much of an agenda or you are looking for new books to read, we recommend you look back at some of the more classic book series. They can be read over three months or over three weeks, but either way it takes you on a journey like no other. It requires more time to read these books, but the time spent is well worth it as you dive into an intensive storyline and an intriguing fantasy world. Whether it’s your first time reading or your ninth, the Periscope staff recommends the Harry Potter series and the Divergent series to indulge in over the hot summer months ahead.

“Fight Club is written beautifully and the surprise ending is absolutely fantastic.” -Katherine Stockton-Juarez

“I liked the book a lot more better because there was more detail and it explained the story a lot more than the movie.” -Karen Back

“I preferred the movie because it showed more detail about what happened.” -Elizabeth Orner

“The movie because it gives more detail and it’s easier to understand.” -McKenzi Failor

“I love The Book Thief because it’s historical and you’re learning something new about World War II and Nazi Germany. It also touches the heart so you get a little emotional reading it. It’s a really good book.” -Jenna Suskie

Flip the page: seniors give their book suggestions Story & information gathered by Chaela Williams & Carol Etzel Photography by Carol Etzel, Chaela Williams, & Brooklyn Norrell Books can have a very influential effect on readers. Whether it is through relatable characters or strong moral themes, the things we learn from literature we often carry with us for the rest of our lives. The pages act as an escape, a transport to another world far from here. The suspense and emotions flooding from author to page keeps readers desperately turning pages. Summer is a time of relaxation, but even the busiest of people have free afternoons spent at home. Instead of spending long, boring hours at home, reading is a perfect way to cure summertime boredom. It’s hard to choose the right book without much guidance, especially when there are so many options. So whether you’re an avid reader or looking for a hobby for over the summer, books are the perfect option. We asked seniors what books they have read, enjoyed, and recommend for over the summer. Here are some suggestions for anyone to enjoy.

“I would recommend Persepolis because it’s a very relevant book for this age group. The story is about a girl’s journey through adolescence and it focuses on rebellion and finding happiness within oneself, which are two really important topics for this generation.” -Sami Jumper

“Everything, Everything is beautifully written with very diverse characters. The format and illustrations were uniquely added and the romance itself was so cute.” -Chaela Williams

“It’s a very sad but touching story. It teaches you that things in your life could be worse than you think. Some have it worse than we do so appreciate what we all have as well as the love we receive from others.” -Kassidi Junkins

FEARLESS

At the time of press, the Carlisle High School spring sports teams were in the middle to end of their seasons. As teams prepared for the final stretch, we caught up with a few key participants on all of the spring sports teams to have them reflect on their seasons.

It’s been a rebuilding year for the team because we graduated eight starters off of our line up. We’ve had a lot of really great games but we are still learning to play together as a whole team. -Emily Reisinger

Not everything goes as planned so don’t forget to have fun. -Jared Griffie

Well, we did our best. -Eric Harris

Throughout the season I live by the words of my little brother Shane, I don’t get hurt, the hurt gets me. -Ryan Godfrey

How would you describe your season? It’s not always about whether you win or lose, as long as you have a positive outlook; that’s a victory itself. -Matthew Presite

We’ve played a lot better this year than the previous years and we’ve gotten so much closer as teammates and friends so that bond really helps to propel the team towards a positive attitude. -Brinley Foreman

It’s been an awesome season. Thank you seniors and good luck in college. -Kevin Duffy

If track was easy, everyone would be great at it. Carlisle works hard to be great at it here. -Julia Ledgett

Some people can’t wait to leave but let me tell you, I do not want to go anywhere. I never had a bad experience in high school and for that I thank CHS. I loved all of my classes, and the teachers were equally as amazing. I loved being able to remain in one place for three years. M34, thank you for providing me with comfort, a place to be, and the best teacher I have ever had. You will surely be missed.

I only recently came around, but I felt like I have known these people and this staff for years. I really appreciate the experience this class gave me. This was the best possible course I could’ve taken; it gave me valuable writing experience and strengthened my appreciation for journalism. I loved my short time here, my peers and my advisor. It’s been great CHS. K’ bye!

Whoa, I can’t believe this is not only my last year but last magazine for Periscope. I’ll be honest, I’m not really good at goodbyes, but I want to thank Muir for dealing with me for the past 3 years; that must’ve been rough. I’m truly going to miss writing music reviews and going to restaurants for staff bonding time. I wish next year’s staff good luck!

It’s been real CHS! I have grown to love this school and see it as a second home for me because in the last 4 years I’ve spent more time in these halls, classrooms, and auditoriums than I have at my own home. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Special shout out to Mrs. Perdue, Mr. Rauscher, Mrs. Hench, and Fran Bixby for filling my mornings with laughter and love.

Hello and goodbye Carlisle High School and Periscope. It has been a brief encounter, but it has been a good one. While I only met you this year, I’m glad I was able to meet this small newsie family full of such amazing people that will be hard to forget. Thank you for letting me experience this year with you all and remember to look out for fake news.
