Senior Tanji Lewis displays her artwork. By Grant DeMars The Pylon The annual Scholastic Art Competition showcases high schoolers’ artwork and gives them the opportunity to have it displayed to the public. The show is highly exclusive, as only the top 700 pieces in the entire state are admitted. This year, over 100 pieces from Central were submitted for adjudication. Out of these, 23 were picked to be in the show, which is a new record for the school.

“It’s confusing to a lot of students,” said Mr. Cullins. “They enter their best pieces, but they don’t get chosen to be in the show. Keep in mind that it’s only the top 700 in the entire state that get in—it’s an incredibly difficult thing for students to do.” Aside from all the hard work students are already putting in for the competition, submitting their pieces is a lengthy process in itself. Submissions used to be live, but due to the large amount of artwork entered, all

Mr. Cullins Art Teacher The pieces are judged by professional artists as well as college professors and guest jurors in the Wichita area. There are three rankings in the Scholastic Art Competition. The highest and most difficult award to obtain is a Gold Key. The Gold Key is given to the top 100 pieces of art in the state. Following the Gold Key is the Silver Key, which is given to the next 100 pieces. Honorable mentions are given to the other 500 pieces. This year, Central received a total of 3 gold keys, 6 silver keys and 14 honorable

mentions— another new school record. This new record would not have been achieved had it not been for senior Tanji Lewis. Lewis helped lead the art department to success by receiving two honorable mentions, along with a Silver Key, all in the 2-D art category. Her success led her to get more art accepted into the show than any other student in the school. This accomplishment was a difficult and lengthy process, as she has spent over 40 hours total on all of her artwork. “I like to use watered down acrylics and oil paints,” said Lewis. “It takes a ton of time, but I love the end product.” The amount of hard work from Lewis, along with the entire art department has paid off, as they have set a new school record for the number of pieces accepted into the Scholastic Art Competition. The record number of 23 pieces will be on display from Feb. 6 to March 8, in Wichita, at the Wichita Center for the Arts.

Senior Courtney Roberts stepped onto the stage at this year’s Thespian Conference, a sea of over one thousand people staring back at her from their seats. The pressure mounted as Roberts and the rest of the cast of A Raisin in the Sun stepped into the bright spotlights, knowing that this performance could either guarantee them a spot in the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska later this year, or end their theatrical journey. All eyes were on the cast as they delivered a performance to remember. “I think we did really good, and it’s our best performance we’ve done.” Roberts said of their conference performance. Roberts and the rest of Thespian Troupe 639 headed to Wichita for the annual thespian conference. While there, they did more than just perform. Along with giving their big performance of “A Raisin in the Sun,” the theater department had another cast place second in the one-act competition. This is an exciting journey for Troupe 639, along with a first time experience for some of the seasoned actors. “It was my first time at conference. I hope we make it to festival,” Roberts said. Actors aren’t the only area of the theater program to excel this year. The tech team took first place at this year’s Tech Olympics. Although when we hear the word “tech” we immediately think of phones and computers, the Tech Olympics consists of much more than that. “The Tech Olympics are a series of challenges that the tech kids compete in that they would normally perform during a show,” Mr. Nulik said. Some of the challenges these students compete in involve setting up a prop, hanging and focussing a light and even knot tying. Out of the 22 teams that competed, Mr. Nulik and the rest of the tech team took home the gold.

Career Cruising:

students feel career explorations most effective for upperclassmen

throughout all years,” Palmateer stated. Once students pick a career it can be helpful for them to begin taking classes in that area. For instance, if a student wants to become a doctor they can begin with medical investigations in their early high school years, and take extra science courses to prepare them. Kohn explained, “Data presented in the report Recovery 2020 by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce states that in Kansas, 71 percent of jobs will require postsecondary education-This may be vocational certification or college--beyond high school. High school is the floor—not the ceiling.” If students are willing to look towards the future, career classes and Career Cruising can be an advantage.

Build-a-bae workshop

Follow these steps to secure a bae for Valentine’s day By Grant DeMars The Pylon Bae: An abbreviation for ‘before anyone else.’ Also a super ratchet and annoying term for your significant other. Life this time of the year can be difficult as you watch others walk around and love on their boyfriend or girlfriend. If you follow these simple steps, you’ll have a bae by Valentine’s Day, with no struggle at all. And, the pain and anguish of watching others celebrate their love will vanish as you become the happy snugglebug you’ve always dreamed of.

1. Your wardrobe has got to be on point. 3. Make sure they know you’re available. Your appearance is the first thing your future bae will judge you on. Make a good first impression.

2. Your flirt game better be strong.

Text bae. Tweet bae. Chill with bae. Tease bae. Compliment bae. Take bae out to eat. Post bae as your #wcw or #mcm. The list goes on forever. This stage is where your crush will decide if you’re bae-worthy or not.

4. Avoid the friend zone at all costs.

In September of 2011, Evan Spiegel released the, soon to be, most popular mobile communication app. SnapChat, along with many similar online messaging apps exposed a new self destructing feature that immediately enthralled its users. These texting and picture messaging alternatives are so wildly appealing due to the mysterious trademark that leaves no trace or evidence of activity on the app. WeChat, WhatsApp, and Kik have comparable features that classify them as particapants in ‘Dark’ social networking. According to Techopedia, ‘Dark’ social is the social sharing of content outside of what can be measured through the internet. So why is this a problem? WhatsApp itself has 400 million active users; let alone SnapChat whose popularity is continually growing bigger and bigger still, three years after its launch to the app store. Consumer awareness of the lacking security applied to the activity through the app has created a focus concerning common cyber issues such as catfish accounts, cyber bullying, and technology dependence. The abilities that these innovative features offer holds immense power that is, more commonly than not, used to manipulate and exploit others in ways unintended by the creator. The biggest concern with the rapid growth of social media, especially those semiprivate and self-destructive, is the issue of cyber bullying. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, about 25.2 percent of students have been victims of cyberbullying. Recent social media and messaging apps like Yik Yak, SnapChat and Kik, made it easier for cyberbullying to take affect on its victims. Although the content in these apps are evanescent, privacy isn’t garanteed. In many instances, users of SnapChat or Kik feel comfortable saying and doing things behind their screen, and are likely to send something they will regret later. According to Bullying Statistics, 1 in 5 students have sent or posted sexually suggestive or nude pictures of themselves to others. These pictures that were sent in confidence can, and have been, exposed on public social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Catfish accounts are another threat to internet consumers whether they are used to verbally assault anonymously or stalking and spying through the account. ‘Dark’ social networking is beginning to take over the internet and is being manipulated in negative and destructive ways. Keeping the dangers that come hand in hand with these apps under wraps is all in the hands of the user.

The Career Cruising program had good intentions, but the online computer assessment didn’t turn out well for some students like freshman Elisa Backes. Being advised to pursue the career of a crossing guard was not the life-long career Backes had in mind. “I think it’s pretty crazy. Some of the careers are not even careers. They are more like volunteer jobs or part-time jobs you don’t go to college for,” Backes explained. The real question is if all students should take this advice of Career Cruising. For most students, they don’t wish to advance in the career of becoming a pet groomer or a martial arts instructor.

Deb Kohn, school to career coordinator, provides aide for students to set goals, identify their career strengths and have the opportunity to create a portfolio of recommendations for the future. Kohn advises students to take all 110 questions of the assessment to narrow down possible jobs. It is also a good idea for students to take the test yearly in case their interests change. There are pros and cons with the Career Cruising program. Sophomore Carlee Palmateer took Career and Life Planning as a freshman and found positives in the class and Career Cruiser. Palmateer explained how it was beneficial to take the class as a freshman. “Taking it [freshman] year was fine because it gave you suggestions of a schedule of the classes you could take in high school

‘The Bachelor’, ‘American Idol’ return with a bang By Morgan Dolton The Pylon Freshman Karley Benson sits in pure excitement and anticipation as she tunes into her favorite channel. Popular shows like “The Bachelor,” has Benson and other students not prepared for the upcoming memorable television moments. “I’m unhealthily excited about the return,” explained Benson. “The Bachelor” began with a three hour jam-packed premiere of America’s newest single man, Chris Soules, and his search for a wife. Jan. 5 marked the beginning of season 19 and Soules’ unique journey. The beginning of the season started with Soules meeting 30 of America’s most eligible women. Each woman, with her own quirky or awkward personality, walked out of the limo, star struck and in awe, catching glimpses of the mansion they will spend the next few months living. In order to stay, each woman has to receive a rose every week until one woman remains with Soules. “The women engage over a man

they probably won’t marry,” Benson stated. She also mentioned her favorite part of the show being the outrageous behavior and drama associated with the show. Another widely popular show, “American Idol,” premiered Jan. 7. Three of the country’s most influential singers in the music industry returned to provide advice and assistance to hopeful singers in an eventful season 14. The three judges began their search in Nashville, Tennessee.

80%

of students have seen the bachelor

109 Students were surveyed during third and fourth lunch on Jan. 23.

Sophomore Evan Lambert is a voracious fan of the show. “[I like] when the really bad singers brag about how good they are and end up embarrassing themselves,” Lambert stated. Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry

Connick Jr. judged the contestants, listening for unique voices to send them to Hollywood. Getting sent to Hollywood can mark beginning of a long-awaited journey to a singing career and a record label. Despite these shows returning, it’s difficult for them to continue gaining viewers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “American Idol” suffered a 44 percent drop in views on the season, losing over 7 million fans from 2012 to 2013. “I can see why they are losing fans,” Lambert insisted, “If they would just get Simon, Paula and Randy back the show would be so much better.” Up-and-coming music shows like “The Voice” and “The X-Factor,” are giving “American Idol” a run for their money. Other dating shows like “Bachelor Pad” could result in problems for “The Bachelor” to continue showing. For a short period, Cox refused to broadcast ABC, resulting in “The Bachelor” no longer being broadcasted to those with Cox TV, and causing raged fans to complain.

Pop culture predictions of 2015:

Our trends anticpate this year’s ‘mainstream’ By Bailey Driver The Pylon

“The British are coming! The British are coming!”

4.

Prepare for a British takeover in the music industry as “Florence and the Machine,” “Rita Ora” and “Adele” plan to drop new albums this year. “Sam Smith” won’t be the only British topping the charts for long.

The Celeb Effect According to Baby Centre, celebrities in 2014 without a doubt influenced the baby naming world. After Simon Cowell named his first born Eric, the name rose 314 percent. Short, strong and rather unusual names are trendy contenders for 2015. Baby Centre’s top five results for girl names are; Lana, Lila, Seren, Martha and Brooke. The top five results for boys are Roman, Abdullah, Jesse, Jenson and Corey.

Early-Onset Nostalgia With ever changing, accelerated trending apps like Timehop make it easy to relive our pasts in the present. The time it takes people to experience nostalgia has compressed due to the rapid change in society’s access to technology.

Attack of the Fangirls While often viewed as crazy and annoying, fangirls hold enormous power in the entertainment business because of their obsessive crushes on boy bands. Many of these fangirls would go to tremendous ends just to support their favorite bands. In 2015 many markets will try to target fangirls because they can either make or break a product line.

“Athleisure” What once started as soccer moms wearing yoga pants as part of their lazy daily uniform has transformed into a staple item for women that provide comfort and class if fashioned appropriately. Leggings, yoga pants and jeggings appear to be the go-to “pant” apparel. These stretchy versatile “pants” will surely be a threat to the denim industry in 2015.

Shortened Semantics Just like everything else in the world, the language system is too evolving. 2015 will be marked by shortened phrases and words as a form of communication. This could get totes cray cray.

Girl Gangs Will Unite Feminism has evolved over the past few years and sure won’t cease in 2015. Thanks to “Taylor Swift,” “Ariana Grande” and the dynamic duos of Nicki Minaj/ Beyonce and Iggy Azalea/Rita Ora, the women of the music industry have yet again made twheir mark by producing top of the chart music. These women have become a feminist icon for young and middle aged women because they promote #GirlPower.

According to The Daily Beast, 61% of TV consumers binge-watch their episodes. It appears that binge-watching has become a new trend for TV consumption. In 2015, there’s a great chance that TV networks will adjust their content so consumers can watch multiple episodes at a time.

Normal is the New Norm Unisex fashion trends will go mainstream in 2015. Clothing influenced by unpretentious, causal and relaxed touches will become a popular look because it allows the individual to shine, rather than the flashy clothing being worn.

Some studnets believe that winning isn’t the main concern, but for most of the teams participating winning plays a huge role in thier performance. “Winning is always a priority to the Raptors, but we always have fun while we play,” Claybaugh said. It is clear that many of the teams have confidence in their play. Fans can only expect more intense, close games as the season plays out.

Students remain in support of their state schools By Connor Martens The Pylon For the last few years, the BIG 12 has arguably been the most competitive conference in college men’s basketball, making it more of a challenge each year for KU to pull off becoming conference champs, but it hasn’t stopped the ‘Hawks yet. Bill Self and company are working towards their eleventh consecutive conference title. Although the Jayhawks lost two powerhouse players in Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid, gaps are being filled with returning players, along with the young talent in freshmen Kelly Oubre Jr. and Cliff Alexander. For KU fans, the streak isn’t bound to end this year. “KU is pretty young, but at the end of the day, they have the tools it takes to get the job done,” said junior Peyton Chard, a KU fan.

As for Kansas State, what started as a season with little promise, the Wildcats have impressed many as of late, beginning their conference play 5-2. With the way they’ve been putting games together, it’s no wonder how the ‘Cats have climbed their way up to be ranked third out of ten teams in the Big 12, as they leave fans believing they can pull it off. “They are finally statrting to play as a team and not for themselves,” said junior Travis Bigler, a K-State fanatic. KSU head coach Bruce Weber can breathe a little bit easier now than before. Earlier in the season, several fans lost hope in the coach, claiming that the only reason he has done alright the past couple of years is because he is still coaching all of Frank Martin’s recruits. Regardless, the fight for the Big 12 title will be nothing short of intense.

Goll reaching goals, awarded nationally By Connor Martens The Pylon Awards are all too familiar to coach Mike Goll, who has been a part of the Tennis program (boys and girls) for a combined 25 seasons. After being an assistant coach for several years, the past couple of seasons have been a chance for Goll to show what he can do. Earlier in the month, Goll was named National Coach of the Year of boys’ tennis by the NFHS Coaches Association, and there aren’t many people questioning as to why. “I knew from the start I was playing for a Lindsey Wood/ The Pylon really good coach. Many people know that Goll isn’t the type to settle for anything, so expect nothing less than another run at state from the team this year.

Superbowl XLIX stirs excitement

NFL fanatics look to place bids among friends as game approaches By Connor Martens The Pylon A year and ten days have passed since the night when Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman’s postgame interview went viral. Now, the Seahawks are back to defend the Lombardi Trophy once again, with the New England Patriots being the only thing standing in their way. If Russell Wilson can lead Seattle to a victory, it will be the first time a team has won the Super Bowl in back to back years since the Patriots did it in 2004 and 2005. It’s safe to say there is a ton of pressure on both teams, as there is for students who are

Some bettors are putting their money on the Patriots’ veteran quarterback Tom Brady, who is in his sixteenth NFL season. However, senior Erick Nilson claims he is going to play this one safe. “I’ll probably put down five or ten bucks on the Seahawks with my brother-in-law, but nothing too major,” said senior Erick Nilson, who isn’t really a huge fan of either team. Editorials & Opinion Annoying trends need to stay in 2014 By Chloe Guillot The Pylon First things, first! We are letting go of “Let it Go.” The chart topping earworm that inspired countless covers, plenty of parodies, and not-so-rocking remixes is just one trend that should not be allowed to see the light of a new year. As with every year, 2014 had its fair share of memorable movements that seemed to take the nation by storm. Some of these trends, like the now infamous “Let it Go” rage, stayed with us all year; others only had a short stay at the top of the social media

So as the fall weather blew in, the effort to help ALS blew out. As autumn rolled around, a sudden outbreak spread to every news channel, radio station, and front page: Ebola. While Ebola isn’t actually a trend, there is no doubt that the disease should pack its bags and

The Real Review: BWW- good wings, bad service The Pylon Recently, a new Buffalo Wild Wings opened up in town. This is real exciting, because BWW probably has some of the best wings I have ever had. So going into BWW for the first time was super exciting, and my first impression was great. It looked great, smelt great and just had an overall great feeling. Then I ended up waiting two hours for a table. This was the first thing that ruined my dinner. So, we finally got sat down. As I looked through the menu to choose what delicious meal I was going to order for my first meal ever in this particular BWW, I was feeling a little parched. I reached for my water, but realized I did not have one. Isn’t that like the first thing your waiter is supposed to bring you? So I asked the waiter to bring me a water and eventually, I got one. That was the second thing that ruined my dinner. I decided to order the Honey Barbecue boneless chicken wings. When I got them, I realized it was definitely worth the wait.

The Stang Rate:

These wings tasted like heaven. They had the perfect amount of sauce, they were the perfect size, and I didn’t even get that messy. Throughout my meal, my waiter only came to me once to ask me what more I needed, and never refilled my water. When it was time to get my check, it took me 20 minutes just to find a waiter to help me. I was full, and ready to be home, but instead I had to wait. This was the third thing that ruined my dinner. BWW may have the best wings in town, in my opinion, but the service needs work. Overall, it was a fun experience because it is a great place to hang out with friends. But, if I go there again and have horrible service, there is no way I am leaving a tip. Buffalo Wild Wings has a great variety of food to order, wether you are feeling saucy and want to do the blazin’ challenge, or if you are feeling subtle and want to get a salad, it is a fun place to eat to satisfy any hunger mood. I would recommend eating there, just be ready for some not-so-good service.

What makes New Years so special? Why do people wait until Jan. 1 before they strive for a new goal or make some sort of life change? Does a New Year’s resolution come with some sort of special power that makes your goal easier to achieve? No. As shocking as it may seem to some, a New Year’s resolution is no different from any other goal. The same amount of effort and dedication is required for success. In fact, the excuse of a new year often causes these goals to be pressure-driven, unrealistic

In fact, the excuse of a new year often causes these goals to be pressure-driven, unrealistic

it. I am here to say that I, Emma Norris, the editor of the Opinions and Editorials page am responsible for writing the Kudos and Callouts column. Other Pylon editors and students suggest their Kudos and Callouts, but I am the main writer. From what I can tell, and what I have been told, the Kudos and Callouts column is a big hit and is the one thing that people actually read in the paper. I have the right to call out or give Kudos to anyone that I think deserves them. That is one of the things that the Freedom of Speech law allows me to do. If you do not agree with what the Pylon is saying, or you would like to express your opinion towards the Pylon, a Letter to the Editor is a perfect way to say what you feel. The Editorials and Opinions Page Editor will put your letter in the Pylon, and you will not be judged about what you say. Everyone has the right to say whatever they feel, even you. So now is the time to voice your opinion and let the school and the Pylon know what is bothering you. The Pylon staff expresses how they feel every month through the paper, so now it is your turn. Help us make this a place for discussion.
