Thousands of miles away a text message is sent. Senior Lamar Lawson opens his phone and smiles, now knowing this special person texting him is alive and safe. Lawson’s mom, Seretta Lawson, is in Afghanistan performing her fourth six month long deployment overseas.

Therefore, Lamar does not know exactly what his mom is doing. This doesn’t take the fact away that he is extremely proud of his mother.

“To take that job and then actually do it the way she has,” Lawson said. “It is very respectable.” Seretta came home three weeks ago midway through her six month period in Afghanistan on a two week leave to see her family. She is now back overseas. In the meantime, however, Lawson stays busy with DFWLYLWLHV OLNH 2UFKHVWUD and Parks and Rereation basketball.

“We stay in touch through phone, email and texting,” Lawson said. “We text almost every day.” Even with the minor contact that they stay in, the distance makes things extremely GLɚFXOW RQ /DPDU +H KDG lived at home with his mom up until she started leaving the country; now he lives with his Aunt and Uncle. “Being separated is very tough because we don’t get to see each other,” Lawson said.

While Don Schroeder, a tutor for the Homework Helpers Program, is helping junior Erik Abrego with his American History, he uses his own experiences to help Abrego understand what happened during Pearl Harbor. Abrego is one of the many students who take advantage of the homework helper program; however, many students have never even heard of it. “He makes them more interesting too,” Abrego said.

“It is helping students in a lot of ways,” Coordinator of Homework Helpers Bobbie Bengtson said. “It’s mainly just helping get homework done, but also to help students gain FRQȴGHQFH 2QH RI WKH PRVW important things is that students are building relationships with our volunteers.” Tutors range from parents of students to recent college graduates to adults coming from their jobs to retirees. “They all enjoy working with young people and they want to help kids succeed in school,” said Bengtson. “(The tutors)

are really trying to do their homework too so they can help,” said Bengtson. Tutors prepare to help students by reading up on some homework too to ensure they are prepared. “They actually get kids to do their work,” said sophomore Dekeysha Cooper. Tutors work with one person or one group of students that are working on same assignment. “If you’re having trouble in a class this is a great place to come and work through it,” said Bengtson. Tutors will work with students for however long it takes.
