A state appointed educational service center known as ESSDACK has been around our school and in the classrooms improving instruction. Their motives include helping schools with data and improving its staff. “Their role is not to judge. It’s to provide insight. They provide an outside eye in an organization,” principle Shanna

Rector said. While at the school, ESSDACK RɚFLDOV FRPH WR WKH FODVVHV to see exactly what goes on in the classroom and what could possibly be improved.” At the recent meeting to review the observations, teachers found out that there wasn’t much to improve. “The school improvement plan focuses on increasing relationships between students and staff. It also focuses on strategies to increase higher order thinking,” Rector said.

Some teachers have had to make adjustments while others keep the same. “After the meeting I personally didn’t need to change anything. I’ve always done the higher order thinking strategies,” French teacher Mrs. Denning said. ESSDACK also said that writing the objectives for the students to see could be a needed routine plan. Another struggle for the school is to meet AYP standards. AYP stands for Adequate Yearly

in one year. This is a situation that Damian Diaz’s replacement Andrew Weese is facing. Mr. Hoelting, a retired science teacher of 32 years, had been helping out Weese while he earned his substitute teaching

license. Now that Weese has his license, the classroom is all his. “I think Mr. Hoelting and I are very similiar in the way that we teach,” Weese said. “We are both very vocal and we both love to teach.”

Progress and their purpose is to determine if schools, districts and the state have made any improvement in student testing. Each year the state sets a goal for math and reading that the school needs to meet. Last year the school fell short in math and reading, but met it in different standards. This year the goal for reading is 90.7 precent and in math it is 88.2 percent. “Every year the goal gets tougher and tougher to reach but we still need to try and reach them,” Rector explained.

The renovations at the East Crawford McDonald’s have evoked curiosity from the people who pass by it.

Sporting a new look

East Crawford McDonald’s gets a makeover By Eric Luce

Entertainment Editor While the recent remodeling of McDonald’s has caught every one’s attention, students have not been greatly affected. The changes to the local franchise evoked curiosity

from those who drove by, but it seemed that very few people really knew what was happening. The irony behind this lack of public knowledge comes from the fact that this McDonald’s is located on the busiest intersection in Salina. While the remodeling is still

in progress, the largest effect it had on the store was the period which the lobby was closed. Matt Remp, the General Manager of McDonald’s on East Crawford, explained the many reasons for their remodel. “McDonald’s requires you to remodel your lobby every

Page 3 10 years, and that’s why we did the inside. The drive-thru was remodeled in order to OHVVHQ WKH WUDɚF LQ IURQW RI the building and allow us to JHW PRUH WUDɚF WKURXJK WKH drive-thru without causing a dangerous situation out in the parking lot for families coming in, Remp said. Remp also mentioned that while they did experience a decline in sales during the remodeling process, they’re hoping it’s going to pay for itself with additional customers being able to come through. McDonald’s stockholder and Economics teacher Tony Slothower is also enthusiastic about all their changes. “I like the new look of McDonald’s, but was surprised to learn that although the sales volume at the East Crawford store is well above average, it currently trails behind two other Salina locations, according to Remp. Other students said that they could care less about the changes, “I don’t go there because I hate their food, Senior Becky Garcia said. Senior Henry Sydow noticed that McDonald’s is very proud of their their new items. “I went in and asked if I could buy one of their new stools and they threatened to kick me out if I asked again.

Many large scholarships are offered for seniors, including the Dane Hanzen Scholarship and the Earl Bane Foundation scholarship. In order to get the Dane Hanzen, one has to have a GPA of a 3.5 or above and had to have scored a 21

or higher on the ACT. Students are then invited to take an exam that is similar to the ACT. A panel then decides on students to interview that took the test and scored well. In order to prepare a student for the interview, counselors and teachers do mock interviews with the qualifying students by running through possible questions.

The new “controversial trend Popular styles of Yoga pants; the fashion fab taking over girl’s wardrobes By Carson Jett Sports Editor

While walking through the hallways it is nearly impossible not to see Sperry’s, Nike socks, skinny jeans, Polo sweaters, and now, yoga pants. Recently yoga pants, or as some may call them, leggings, are being worn by almost all girls around with long sweaters, short tops, t-shirts and whatever HOVH WKH\ PLJKW Č´QG LQ WKHLU wardrobe. Easily enough, yoga pants are the new jeans. “They’re the best thing ever because it’s like you’re wearing pants, but you’re not,â€? junior Katie Kelemen said about yoga pants. But where did these incredibly comfy and tight pants come from and what are they actually for? As said in the title, yoga pants were made for women to wear during yoga because they allow stretch while exercising and are DQ DOWHUQDWLYH WR WKH XQČľDWWHULQJ

sweat pants generally being worn. Many high schools around the world, like ones in Loveland, Ohio, are banning students from wearing yoga pants for the reason that they are “too clingy and revealing. Although yoga pants are being watched more carefully and are causing some trouble, it is not stopping their popularity just yet.

“They’re the greatest invention next to the printing press. Gunnar Sullivan Senior

Kelemen and Norris both admitted to wearing these pants two to three times a week with t-shirts and UGG boots. Not only are girls so attracted to this new fad but guys seem to

enjoy them as well. “They’re the greatest invention next to the printing press, senior Gunnar Sullivan said. Senior Kyle McQuaige also added they look nice, but mentioned that they may be looked at in the wrong way from some people. Although girls are freely wearing these yoga pants almost anywhere they go, there is still a level of discomfort that probably will never go away. Girls should also keep in mind their body types and the leggings they are wearing, because some even turn out to be see-through, causing even more problems. Yoga pants can cause controversy, but at this time it seems quite impossible to stop high school girls from wearing these incredibly comfortable and easy pants. Whether it be going to school, hanging out at home, or actually trying the art of yoga, yoga pants will be here for a while.

Girls’ basketball wins first tourney in 22 years By Hayley Hager Reporter

A much needed spark. That was what head girl’s basketball coach Geoff Andrews was looking for while down three points in Saturday’s SIT tournament. He found that spark in freshman Bailey Driver. “There is a lot of pressure being a freshman and I feel like I had a big role to play,” Driver said, but without that effecting her game, she came in and scored the three points the girls’ basketball team needed to tie

the game. “This win was an exciting step in our program and it was a big deal to win a hometown tournament,” Coach Andrews said. The last time the Lady Stangs won a tournament was 22 years ago, but despite the young age of the players, the SIT was in the hands of the core of the team, sophomore starters MacKenzie Morris, Emily Wood and Shaelyn Martin. “I don’t think about being the only senior starter. All the younger sophomores are leaders too so it doesn’t effect how we play on

the court,” lone senior starter Maddy Shetlar said. With their victory the girl’s returned to their number one 5A state ranking. “We went into the game thinking like champions, so I had to play like a champion,” Bailey Driver said. As SIT champions the girl’s have accomplished one of several team goals which includes a trip to the 5A state tournament in Topeka. “The girls are really happy but they know there are bigger tournaments to win,” Coach Andrews said.

“Reality shows shouldn’t change our lives Hayley Hager Staff Reporter

Orange skin and tight cheetah print dresses aren’t fashionable. Along with the list of things that stick out of the ordinary, having an unplanned pregnancy at the age of 16 and thirty women competing for one man’s “love on national television aren’t reality at all. I know all of you already know what I am talking about; the popular reality shows Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and The Bachelor. In reality, Jersey Shore gives us nothing but examples of what not to be. The main focuses of the show are “The Situation; the biggest tool to ever exist on the planet, “Meatball Problems; a list of activities the unique Snooki and Deena cannot easily achieve in their even more unique Guidette lives, and “Rahn and Sam’s more than unhealthy and dysfunctional relationship. Now we may be young and dumb, but we are all smart enough

to know that those aren’t the kinds of things to be when we are adults in the real world. Because this is reality TV, we understand it’s made for our own entertainment. Teen Mom has also been a huge hit on MTV. I’m not saying Teen Mom sends us a harmfulmessage like Jersey

other forever by proposals and marriage thinking that that is the answer to their happiness. Even more so than following dreams and getting married, we have seen messed up family relationships that no child should endure. Again, this is reality TV, but we know to never let something so serious invade

Staff vote: Do reality shows greatly effect your everyday life?

YES: 4 6KRUH EXW , GHȴQLWHO\ WKLQN it sends us a deceiving one. The show glamorizes the idea of having a child while in high school, and though I have no experience, I don’t think having a child right now would be that easy. On Teen Mom. we have seen multiple couples commit to each

NO: 11 into our personal lives. I have a lot of respect for the teen moms we interact with everyday, but the ones put in the spot light on MTV are not necessarily moms to look up to. Now if there is serious entertainment created by Reality TV, I think it would be from The Bachelor/The

Bachelorette. People sign up to be on national television to “fall in loveâ€? with someone they have never met. They are competing for this “loveâ€? against 25 other men or women. To me, this is just embarrassing and honestly pretty pathetic. Reality television can get crazy, EXW LW GHČ´QLWHO\ DGGV D OLWWOH excitement to everyone’s weeks.

Versus-Romney for G.O.P. or G.O.N.E. Dalton Willey Guest Reporter Tradition and excellence are the foundations of the Republican Party, with intent to restore the United States back to the prosperous nation it once was. Mitt Romney will have my vote. Now before you yell at me for jumping on the Romney bandwagon; As a candidate he is by far the best choice out of any of GOP nominees with a strong economic background and by far one of the soundest foreign policies. Most recently the Romney storm has swept through Iowa and New Hampshire earning a win in both these states; soon enough Romney will win South Carolina and sky rocket to the top of most republican’s minds. What’s actually important is Romney’s chances against Obama. In a head to head between Romney and Obama CNN reports that Romney would win the presidential election by 2% of the vote.
