Student Life Students interested in agriculture get real deal, learn about farming

Syd’s Sermon

By Sydney Kossow

Sydney Kossow Sophomore

The Pylon

Is tanning worth it? All year we strive to be tan. An invention that helps us accomplish this goal is tanning beds. Technically tanning beds are dangerous so the spray tan is a safer choice but you know what I mean. Trust me I’ve had my own experiences with a spray tan. That was a fun day of being called a carrot, oompa loompa, etc; as well as having FB status’s made about me. Anyways back to the point, tanning beds. To clear things up I am not against these and although I’ve never used one, I plan on it at some point in my life. And to be honest I am jealous of those who have tan skin in the Winter while I am a snowball but that doesn’t change my fear of tanning. I know you probably hear this all the time, but I don’t think some people understand how lethal these things can be, so here it goes. Every time you tan you are at harm but going a few times isn’t all that bad. Once you make tanning a habit there is a big safety factor that comes into play. Anytime you are exposed to the sun you are at risk of cancer, but tanning increases that risk factor. I am not saying that you shouldn’t tan, just saying that you should be careful. This is for two big reasons 1. safety and 2. you don’t want to look like leather.

Sophomore JD McHenry, Senior Matt Rowe, Sophomore James Michel and Sophomore Travis Bigler are currently working for Mr. Anderes and learning how hard work can pay off.

A big employer of high school kids is Greg Anderes. He employs four central students, senior Matt Rowe and sophomores Travis Bigler, James Michel and JD Mchenery. “Allthough high school students make more mistakes, everybody deserves to start somewhere. It’s a great learning opportunity for them.” Anderes said. He not only looks at his students as workers, but as friends too and wants them to be the best they can be.

“Working with Mr. Anderes has taught me about hard work and I have learned many life skills.” said senior Matt Rowe. The employees on the farm do many things from working cattle to working with crops. “My favorite part about working there is wheat harvest.” said sophomore James Michel. Almost all the students that work on the farm have been in an Ag class with Anderes. “Farming is one of my favorite things to do and Anderes farms gives me the opportunity to do it.” said Michel.

Student Life Like, wow, congratulations! You’re in a relationship. You’ve officially made it to the cool kids crew. You’re better than all single people and have a right to rub it in everyone’s face, right? Wrong. Flaunting your relationship is not the way to go. Sophomore Naudia Carroll is often forced to deal with the PDA problem: “The most awkward PDA is the freshmen girls who think they’re lesbians Lindsey Wood / The Pylon making out in the bathroom,” she said, Sophomores Alex Russel and Naudia Carroll hold each other on the “Take it somewhere steps by the main office. else.” “These Central freshman lesbians are giving us a bad rep. They’re all over each other,” Carroll said. The amount of lesbian PDA is getting By Hannah Schroder out of control, but they seem to be punished The Pylon for it a lot more than straight people. “Gay PDA rules are enforced, but straight people Undoubtedly the worst part of every day don’t get into trouble,” said Carroll. Whether at school is the inevitable moment when I this happens because of personal preference walk past some couple who is making out by teachers or because the couples are in in the hallway. Not only are they blocking the wrong place at the wrong time, it doesn’t my way to class, but I can hear their lips matter. smacking together and it’s disgusting. In the Salina Central High School student I’m not against all PDA, but it is seriously handbook, it specifically says that “public getting out of hand if a girl is kissing her displays of affection are not allowed.” boyfriend’s neck during choir. “Just because gay people are different

Gay, straight - PDA still bothers many students

does not mean they should be discriminated against. Straight people are graphic in the hallways too,” Sophomore J.Z. Sorell said. Junior Meg Johnson said, “I don’t care whether it’s a straight couple or a gay couple, I just don’t want to see anyone making out.” News Flash: constantly having your arms around your boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s waist and kissing every time you see each other at school does not prove to the world how much you love each other. In fact, it annoys pretty much everyone and makes us uncomfortable. It makes single people cringe and it makes other couples insecure. Johnson said, “Your goal shouldn’t be to make other people feel bad. School is for education, not spending time with your boyfriend or girlfriend.” Your relationship is no better or more worthy of flaunting than anyone else’s. Wouldn’t you rather have people talk about you and say “Aww, their relationship is so adorable,” than “Oh my gosh, they’re so annoying. Why don’t they just get a room?” Being open about your relationship isn’t all bad. Sorell said, “PDA should be allowed in school because honesty is the best policy. But making out and groping each other in the middle of the hallway is too much. Take it somewhere else.” If you’re ashamed to be in a relationship you probably shouldn’t be in it. Be open, but just keep the physical aspect to a minimum. Holding hands in the hallway and a peck on the cheek is acceptable, but anything past that makes everyone uncomfortable. Even holding hands is getting ridiculous. Don’t walk slow and don’t take up the whole hallway. The rest of us are just trying to get through life at a reasonable pace. Whether you’re gay, straight, or bisexual, you need to set boundaries for PDA. Johnson said, “Your PDA can be taken to an extent, but don’t let it get over the top.”

#relatable Junior Hannah Schroeder explains how to be yourself, connect with others

By Hannah Schroder The Pylon

Sometimes as a teen, you feel like no one understands you. Life seems so hard, and no one relates to you. But there is hope. Being a #relatable teen comes naturally to most people, but if you’re having trouble, here are some tips for maximum #relatability:

1.

Be your rad self. If you’re trying too hard, nobody will #relate to you.

2.

Watch other people. It sounds creepy, but you can’t be #relatable if you don’t know what people are like.

3.

Tweet about it. For examples of extremely #relatable tweets, visit @hannahlynnschro on Twitter.

4.

Don’t just be #relatable on Twitter. Be relatable in real life by saying “hashtag relatable” after you say things that other teens might #relate to.

For seniors, it’s the end; for juniors, it’s a new experience. However it is seen, juniors and seniors are prepping for prom on April 5. Not only is this the earliest date prom has landed on in the past 4 years, but it shortens the time of preparation for students, specifically the women. We all know how it goes: boys lounge around all day until an hour before prom where they shower, groom, and slip into their tux while girl’s spend all day pampering themselves up until the time their date arrives at their door. Gentleman, you have it easy. Prom is a lot more difficult for girl’s than guys. “It’s frustrating as a girl having to do your hair just to keep it in place the whole night,” said senior Patty Dominguez. “It takes me around three hours to get ready on prom day.” Junior Darian Burse is the complete opposite of Dominguez when dealing with time, but still wants to impress his fellow peers at prom.

Prom price breakdown Everyone knows about the one downside to prom: the tickets. However, ladies, the gentlemen are suppose to pay for these pricey tickets; it’s tradition. For Justus, she sees it as the last opportunity for the senior class to have a fun time and make memories. Senior Tanner Robl also sees this as one of the final memories for the senior class. “I’m excited to make lots of memories with the seniors on our last dance, as well as for the juniors to have their first experience at prom, Robl said. While others wait anxiously for prom, others are looking more forward to the festivities and excitement at after prom. “I’m just ready for after prom so I can win prizes and play games all night long,” Burse added. Through all of the stressful preparation and anticipation of either the first or last prom of your high school career, most importantly, enjoy it. As cliche as it sounds, it will be one of the biggest memories for students and should be seen as an equal opportunity of enjoyment for all.

Bailey Driver The Pylon

“I expect our girls to work hard and get better to compete each week!” -Coach Black

Kudos to spring sports for saving us all from winter misery By Bailey Driver The Pylon The end of winter sports brings a glimpse of life as the weather warms up and athletes are released to perform outside. Although the winter sports teams saw tremendous success in post season, this school is in need of a change. There’s something about the smell of fresh air, newly cut grass and hot asphalt that brings out the best in all of us. The spring sport season is the shortest of the year as it’s ended by the start of summer break. This is an exciting time for everyone. Even those that aren’t enthused by sports, there’s less than two months of school leftyou can’t try and tell me that isn’t thrilling. Those that are enthused by sports, it’s time to cheer on your Stangs as we begin another season of success. I would argue that there are few things better than basking in the sun, slurping on your half price Sonic drink, and cracking sunflower seeds as you support your school on game day. If you’re really looking to get involved with spring sports without actually having to work hard, I’d suggest hurdle hustling for Coach Gooch. This includes free admission into the track meet and quality bonding time with the track team- what’s not to love? We all know we can count on those “cleat chasers” to make an appearance at all of the boys’ baseball games. They surely wouldn’t miss their gossip sessions that strictly involve gawking at boys in baseball pants for the world. On a more realistic note, spring is defined by new life. For some athletes that are dedicated only to a spring sport, your year of impatience and preparation has come to an end. Last year’s seniors left some big shoes for the returning athletes to fill in the athletic department. For example, the boys’ tennis team was lead by three seniors as they brought home a state tennis title. From what I hear, returning lettermen are elevating their game to make another run at a state title. We’re ready to see what these spring sport athletes can do. Whether you find yourself sitting in South’s pool yelling for the girls’ swim team, blowing a vuvuzela at a girls’ soccer game or joining your fellow flirtatious cleat chasers, spring sports are here. Although the beginning of spring hasn’t brought consistent weather, summer is right around the corner. It’s time to move on from March Sadness into the new life of spring sports.

Beanies:

Why are we trippin’ over them? I have to admit, I have a strong love for beanies. I own like ten of them. They’re comfy, and they look awesome and indie. Even though they slide off my head a lot, I’m still loyal to them. So, it upsets me when I’m told by administration to take my beanies off. A lot of teachers don’t care if you wear beanies, but some are crazy about it. They try to claim that beanies are “distracting,” or whatever, but no one cares if someone in their class is wearing one. The problem is in the administrations’ heads, as there really is no problem with beanies. Not only are beanies cute in general, but they are also a way to express yourself. They’re completely different from other hats. The only reason I can think of for how crazy administration is about hats is that we’re smuggling illegal drugs and weapons in them, but I mean, really? How am I going to smuggle drugs or do whatever you’re worried about me doing with a beanie? The only other reason I can think of is that this dumb, heinous rule is based off of the social norm of not wearing hats indoors. But, BEANIES ARE NOT HATS. I personally don’t see how wearing a beanie indoors is disrespectful. So, please chill out and let me make my indie fashion statement in peace.

By Riley Gates The Pylon

Starting in the spring of last year administration locked all doors except the main entrance. With complaints from teachers about students banging on the south doors to get in after the bell, a buzz system was thought up and eventually installed. The new system is dumb in my opinion. We should’ve been aware of the change and why it was needed. With more of a warning the system might have been

more accepted by students. The rules of the buzzer are very unclear, students don’t know if it is just for students who go to classes outside of the school or just simply because they are late. Being on only one door it’s truly a pointless system.

We should have been aware of the change and why it was needed. With more of a warning the system might have been more accpetd by students. Because of the hazy reasons, rules and placement the new buzzing system is irrelevant; as well as a waste of time for the students and money for the school.

Kudos Callouts

Staff Editorial:

17 out of 23 Pylon staffers voted that teachers DO in fact give too much Kudos: homework. Teachers need to start giving less homework to sleep deprived teens 53% of students claim they receive more than an hour worth of homework every night

The following are situations in which our faculty, students and others deserve praise for a job well done or to be called out for dropping the ball. They are made by the opinion editor with the help of the rest of the staff.

47% of students claim they receive less than an hour worth of homework every night

A random survey of 138 students was taken during W2 on Tuesday, March 25.

By Genna Salstrom The Pylon Every morning, I dread waking up. My body feels like a rock, and I simply cannot work up the energy to get out of bed, take a shower, and go to school. The main factor to my sleepiness is staying up all night doing homework. Now, every teenager is like this, but is that okay? Should the norm really be that teenagers get so much homework every night that they can barely get out of bed in the morning? 58 out of 138 students report that they receive up to 2 hours of homework a day, while only 36 of those students actually do it. I believe this should not be the norm,

and I think teachers should definitely consider lowering their homework standards.

I personally take three AP classes, so I have more than the typical amount of homework, but even regular and advanced classes have more homework than you would expect. I personally take three AP classes, so I have more than the typical amount of

homework, but even the regular and advanced classes have more homework than you would expect. Every student I know, whether they be in AP or regular classes, complains to me about how much homework their teachers assign them. Without proper sleep, teenagers cannot function. Sleep deprivation, especially in teens, causes a multitude of problems including but not limited to obesity and depression. Instead of causing obesity, depression, and stress in teenagers by dealing out so much homework, teachers need to just cool it on the work and let us sleep.
