Junior Lauren Isom-Wiedow donates money to the Angel Tree in Andrew’s room. Andrews’ sixth hour is trying to win the most money challenge once again this year.

As the repeated $20 bills hit the bottom of the Angel Tree giving jar, history teacher Mr. Andrews knew that his class was going to win. The competition throughout the school for classes to raise the most money to adopt kids for the Angel Tree was in his hands, all because of one student. “I gave $160,” junior Chase Hartsuff said. Hartsuff was in Andrews sixth hour last year and propelled the class to victory through his generosity. “I just felt like it,” Hartsuff said. “I guess I also wanted to help the kids in need.” Student council conducts the Angel Tree affair every year. He sat in the stands and watched as the Lakewood Middle School football team played South Middle. People looked in amazement as a man of his stature would take time out of his busy schedule to come to a middle school football game; however, for new USD305 superintendent William 'Bill' Hall, it is all in a days work. "That has always been my leadership style," Hall said. "Part of my job is the opportunity to meet students, staff, and teachers." Throughout the year Mr. Hall has been seen within the halls of our school numerous times. 6WXGHQWV ȴQG LW UHIUHVKLQJ WR see the man in charge of their

school actually making himself visible. Hall has been in our school during the school day numerous times already. "If they are going to be above us, then it is important to know who they are and where they stand on things," senior Mitchel Wilson said. Mr. Hall is also bringing many new fresh ideas into consideration. The idea that is possibly the farthest along is the use of iPads in the classroom "We are in the exploratory phase with the iPads right now," Hall said. "We are looking at possibly using the iPad as a type of digital textbook." Soon Mrs. Bigler's class will be using iPads to experiment how the technology will work. Bigler was chosen as the one teacher from Central to get this

opportunity. Other ideas that are being brought to the table include seventh grade sports and the staggered start time of school. 7KHUH LV QRWKLQJ GHȴQLWH LQ the future but they are things we are looking into," Hall said. "The board of education has also gone paperless; we think that if our teachers should do it than so should the board." There is no doubt that new superintendent Mr. Hall is trying to leave his mark and set himself apart from the rest. Yet, when it comes to snow-days, he gives the typical superintendent answer. "If we can have school then we will," Hall said."But if the safety of students and staff are at danger then we will call it off."

New freshman English teacher, Mr. Jones, shows off his talent of playing the guitar. He has kept this talent hidden from most of the staff and students up until now.

Mr. Bryce Jones not only excels in teaching, but playing guitar too By Sarah Gage Arts Editor

Teacher, Bryce Jones strummed a chord on his guitar during his second hour planning period. The sound was melodious and well practiced. After playing guitar since he was 16, it has become natural to him. Before his teaching career blossomed, Jones played as part of the University of Kansas jazz band. He also played in Lawrence with his friends. Now, he usually just plays his guitar at his home.

“It just caught on, Jones said, and he has been playing ever since. Jones chose the guitar over all other instruments because his sister had one that was lying around his house. One day he decided to pick it up and learn how to play. “I take it easy, Jones said. Jones still enjoys playing when he can, and he will play with some friends every now and then when he has the opportunity. Even though he loves guitar, Jones gave up any chances of trying to play professionally

so that he could become a high school English teacher. However, he never regrets his decision to do this. Jones accepted the position IRU KLV Č´UVW WHDFKLQJ MRE WKLV year. Even though Jones’ students have gotten to know him as not only a teacher, but a person, not many of them knew that he enjoys playing the guitar in his spare time. “It’s a broad subject and you can talk about a lot. It’s another form of expression,â€? Jones said. Jones now has two areas in which he can express himself— English and guitar.

Burns and scars are scattered on the hands and feet of senior Christopher Leger, but to the self-taught glass artist, it’s all just “part of the job.â€? “I have a big third degree burn on my foot from where a piece of hot glass fell on it and was held against my foot by my Birkenstock’s, but you don’t want to see that,â€? Leger said. Leger plans on attending Emporia State and becoming a professional artist. Displayed in the art room in a large glass case, is all of Leger’s hand-blown original work. His pieces aren’t just showed off, but also sold. One of his pieces sold for $700, “Light in the Sea,â€? and was also D Č´UVW SODFH Č´QLVKHU LQ D VWDWH wide art competition.

After seeing a glass-blower at the Smoky Hill River Festival at the age of 15, Leger was hooked and started purchasing glassblowing equipment online with money he’d been saving for two years. “It wasn’t until about my junior year that I could actually make good stuff,â€? Leger said. “It took about two years to learn how to work with the glass.â€? Having taught himself how to blow glass, Leger is a true do-it-yourself man. Judging by his award-winning artwork, it seems that he has things pretty ZHOO Č´JXUHG RXW EXW LW KDVQȇW been easy learning how to work with glass. “I had some glass explode on a table because it was too hot and it caught the table on Č´UH Č‹ /HJHU VDLG IROORZHG E\ D chuckle. “It was an accident so I didn’t get in trouble.â€?

Senior Brittan Smith watches as his computer loads his recently added YouTube video. Smith created a YouTube channel his sophomore year after he transferred from EllSaline High School. Smith sings and plays guitar to his original songs and some of his favorites, such as: “Monster, by Paramore, “What Do You Want From Me, by Adam Lambert, “Airplanes by B.o.B, “Pray, by Justin Bieber and many more.

“I started singing when I was a kid. I told my mom one day when we were in the car listening to the radio that I wanted to be a singer, and since then I’ve been working towards it, Smith said. Smith performed for Mustang Live last year during lunch, and he also performed at other events such as his church and the Pops concert last year. With every YouTube performer, there is always a long list of comments and responses to their video. Even though some are full of encouragement, others are cruel and judgemental.

“I’ve received some really great and some really bad comments, but I appreciate it all. I’m happy that people take the time to listen and give their feedback, It helps me get better, Smith said. “I aspire to enter the music industry as an independent singer/band and perform my own music, doing what I love for a purpose, Smith said. Smith wants to thank his family for inspiring and supporting his musical interests. Check out his videos by looking up ‘Bnsmith93’ on YouTube.

Encouraging, helpful and happy. These words are used by the girl swimmers when describing their coach, biology teacher Mr. Smith. But as the season approaches, there will be a huge part missing to the team: “Smitty”. After coaching girl’s swimming for 21 years, Coach Smith has decided to step down and leave the job to assistant coach, Dawn Sheforgen. During the end of the season last year, Smith was diagnosed

with prostate cancer. Having to deal with this and all of the tasks that came with coaching, began to be too overwhelming for him. “I had my biopsy the day after our swimming banquet, and the girls didn’t know,” said Smith. Even though he had surgery for his cancer this summer, Coach Smith knew it was best for him to leave his job as the head coach of girl’s swimming. Giving this up is not easy for Smith, though. Not only does he love coaching relays, but he enjoys seeing a swimmer

progress from the beginning to the end of the season. “Seeing individual success occur is a cool thing to witness as a coach,” said Smith. Coach Smith will not only miss the swimmers’ smiles and laughter, but the way they care for one another. “I love Smitty because he is always encouraging, and makes it a point to help every girl on the team,” junior swimmer Sydney Dauer said. Boys’ and girls’ basketball teams write letters to raise money for the program, volunteer By Emily Wood Sports Editor

Eventually, the full boxes will go to families in need of meals during the holiday season. Every year the basketball teams send out letters to friends and family asking for donations for support of their programs. In return, they pledge to do community service throughout Salina during the season. “The letters describe the services that we give back to our community. In return, it asks if anyone wants to donate money. All the money goes back to the program,” head girls’ basketball coach Geoff Andrews said.

The boys’ basketball team helps lift the tree that they cut down during recent volunteering that they did in the community. “We ask each kid to come up with 10 names of family and friends to send letters to,” head boys’ basketball coach Doug Finch said. Because generally the girls team has fewer players, Coach Andrews asks his girls team to come up with 12 names.

Last year the letter writing brought in a combined total of over $6000 dollars. “The money goes to the purchase of our own game jerseys, new travel bags and practice uniforms,” Andrews said.

The places that the teams volunteer include the Ted Hodges Blood Drive, an MAYB basketball tournament held at Central, clean up at the 4A State football game, and packing boxes of food for the Salvation Army. “I think it is important to raise money for our program and make a positive difference in our community,” sophomore Kamen Kossow said. Andrews favorite part about doing the letter writing and volunteering is seeing the boys and girls teams work together. “I enjoy seeing them take on leadership roles and coming up with ways to get the tasks accomplished,” Andrews said. “It shows that Salina Central cares about our community and shows that we have class both on and off the court,” junior Damion Cooper said. “My favorite part is just being united as a team.”
