Message from Camp Director The idea of providing a safe and noncompetitive arena for a younger generation of choral musicians was always on my mind—a space where singers can let their guards down, be friends and make music with other singers their age. Thailand Youth Choral Camp was conceived as a result in 2016 with Dr. T. J. Harper as our first guest conductor. Thanks to Dr. Harper, we have a well-balanced community of people and music built in every camp as he continued on leading all subsequent camps. Covid-19 pandemic had kept us away from enjoying music and seeing the usual picture of students growing from practically strangers to good friends during the course of our seven-night’s camp. During these past two years, members of choirs in 2019 have graduated. Choirs have trouble meeting regularly. Therefore, at this opportunity to resume university choral singing in Thailand, we brought 45 newlyadmitted Chulalongkorn University students to the camp, plus six students from King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, and four students Chiangmai College of Dramatic Arts. It had been a humbling experience and a joy witnessing the campers progressed from a choir of virtually no idea what singing was (not to mention choral singing!) to a different choir at the end of the camp. There were moments in the camp that called for leadership from the students, young professional conductors, faculty, and staff. All of them stood up to the tasks. I could have written another book ‘What They Didn’t Teach You in Graduate

Conducting Class’ from this camp alone! We made it back to Bangkok in one piece, and here some of us are singing in front of the audience two weeks after camp abruptly ended before the scheduled date, though in the absence of our beloved main camp faculty and guest conductor—TJ Harper. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” also applies to Covid-19. The pandemic is real, and it is still out there. Will it keep us from going forward from this point? The answer is, NO. We still have our eyes on the goal of this marathon we started in 2016. Sometimes we may sprint at our full speed, and other times we may just inch forward, but we are still on track. ☺ Thank you, all the campers who worked so hard during the camp and showed persistence to come to a full closure of the camp—a culminating concert. Also big thanks to everyone involved in this camp to make it happen, especially Dr. T. J. Harper. With the exciting stories about the camp that we are about to tell the audience tonight, this was the best camp ever!

Until Next Time, Pawasut Piriyapongrat Camp Director July 8, 2022
