Message from Camp Director
Every year our team at Office of Art and Culture, Chulalongkorn University, and I look forward to Thailand Youth Choral Camp in a different way than other choral activities we do. Organizing and running this camp take a special kind of commitment as it involves spending 24/7 with seventy or more students from university choirs in Thailand, sometimes from abroad, for one week. Watching them shaping up as a choir through rehearsing and coming together as one big community are some of the most rewarding things in my career.
This year, for the first time, we have secondary school students from Assumption Convent School, The College of Dramatic Art (Chiangmai), Chak Kham Khanathon School (Lamphun), Sarasas Suksawad School, and La Salle Chanthaburi School joining with university students from Kasetsart University, Mahidol University, Srinakarinwirot University, and Chulalongkorn University. The total number is 60 campers. It has been a joy working with them.
I cannot go without saying how proud I am of our teaching assistants who are my students and ThYCC graduates from previous years who are now promising young conductors in the Thai choral scene. Supitcha Kansirisin, and Natthita Wongprom run sectional rehearsals, warm-up sessions, and are also conducting in tonight’s concert.
Thailand Youth Choral Camp cannot be what it is without our stapled guest conductor, Dr. T. J. Harper from Loyola Marymount University, USA, who has been with us every summer camp since the start in
2016. He has his special way to connect with the campers, through which he builds them up, not only as a beautiful choir, but also a beautiful community of young singers I hope their camaraderie established in the camp will continue for life.
I can never thank my dear friend, TJ, enough for his tremendous contribution to this camp.
I also need to publicly thank Sirowut Srinitedwatin, Paradee Ongksirimemongkol, all the campers and everyone involved, for their unwavering support and hard work for the success of the camp and this culminating concert. Thank you!
Until Next Time,
Pawasut Piriyapongrat Camp DirectorJune 15, 2024
