Fall 2016 Activity Guide • www.unioncity.org/departments/community-recreation-services

The City of Union City is remodeling the Kennedy Community Center into a new Youth Center. Members of the community, local organizations, city staff and youth of Union City have been working on this project. We have design plans for the building that we developed with Ross Drulis Cusenbery Architecture, Inc. We are excited to share our progress with the community. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2017. We will have a bigger and better facility so we can offer more programs and events for teens and young adults.

This summer we started the next process of the project, the Mural Project. The Illuminaries, our selected artists, held free art workshops for the community’s youth at the Kennedy Community Center. The goal of these workshops was to cocreate murals and artwork with Union City youth that deliver timeless, visually stunning and engaging works of art with a positive community-driven message. We hope to raise awareness among local youth about the opportunities and support that will be available with the new youth center. In addition to the workshops, there are several internships available for youth to develop life and job skills. The Illuminaries and youth will design seven art installations that will be part of the new Kennedy Youth Center. Follow @Illuminaries to see more of their art work.

Fall 2016 Activity Guide • www.unioncity.org/departments/community-recreation-services

Union City has joined with nearly one hundred other cities and counties in California that now prohibit restaurants and other food providers from distributing food and beverages in containers made of expanded

polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam. Union City’s new Food Ware Ordinance will change how we bring home food or drinks from our favorite local eatery.

What type of food service containers will be prohibited in Union City? The Food Ware Ordinance applies to single-use disposable foam containers intended for serving or transporting prepared ready-to-eat food or beverages.

The ordinance does not apply to pre-packed food such as Cup Noodles, egg cartons or foam trays for raw meat, fish or poultry and foam ice chests. Polystyrene straws, cup lids and utensils are also not included in the ordinance.

What’s wrong with containers made of foam?

• It is not recyclable • It is a common item that is littered on streets and is difficult to collect by street sweepers

• It ends up in gutters and storm drains, which lead to local creeks, the bay and ocean

as food by birds, fish and wildlife and, if ingested, can cause reproductive failure, disease or death.

All food providers, which means any persons providing food or beverages within Union City for public consumption on or off its premises and includes:

• Restaurants • Delis • Coffee shops • Fast-food establishments • Grocery stores

• Food trucks • Convenience stores • Caterers • City rental facilities

What food service ware does the ordinance allow? Any type of reusable, recyclable or compostable food service ware. Some examples of acceptable products are shown below:

PLASTIC CONTAINERS

When does the ordinance take effect?

What can you do?

Food providers will be prohibited from using foam food ware in Union City beginning January 1, 2017.

Support Union City businesses complying with the new ordinance. Place compostable containers in your green organics cart and recyclables in the brown recycling cart.

For more information go to UnionCity.org/eps or contact Union City Recycles at (510) 675-5353 or 675-5466.

Do you know anyone with Parkinson’s disease?

We now have PD specific classes at the Mark Green Sports Center. Call the Fitness Coordinator - Robert Magbanua (510) 675-5600 for more information.

Dance for Parkinson’s

In Dance for PD, participants are challenged and empowered to explore movement and music in creative and stimulating ways that also address balance, cognition, motor skill, coordination, and physical confidence. This class, led by trained dancers will share their knowledge by using movement sequences that can be done with or without chairs, and will engage each person and provide a refreshing social environment.

PWR! Moves

PWR! Moves as a class and exercise program created by a Physical Therapist by the name of Dr. Farley and aims to maintain and restore skills that deteriorate and interfere with everyday movements. The 4 main movements of this program can be adapted and progressed into multiple postures (floor, all 4’s, sitting, and standing). Research has demonstrated that the movements in this program as well as the manner in which they are performed can translate into everyday activities, essentially improving overall quality of life. Remember that what you do and how you do it matters. This class will help train those affected with PD to get better with exercise.

Rock Steady Boxing

Fight back against the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s by training like a fighter. By nature, boxing is a workout that demands the body to move in all planes of motion and challenges the mind and body to adapt to every stimulus. In this boxing class you will be able to build strength, power, speed, and endurance, all of which improve quality of life outside of the gym. Class Dance PWR Rock Steady

Smoking and Tobacco Regulations !!!

Did you know that smoking regulations have been adopted by the City of Union City? Union City promotes a healthy living environment & protects non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke where they live, work, & play. In November, 2010, the City Council restricted smoking in rental complex units, unenclosed common areas, & outdoor dining spaces. Tobacco retailers also need to obtain a local Tobacco Retailer License.

Key Requirements:

• Smoking is prohibited in all rental complexes (2+ units) common areas (enclosed & open). • As of Feb. 23, 2012, smoking in any rental complex, including balconies & patios, is prohibited. • Smoking is prohibited in all outdoor dining areas of restaurants & surrounding 25 feet. • Smoking is prohibited in parks, public events, and service areas (i.e., bus stops, ATMs). • Clear, conspicuous, and unambiguous “NO SMOKING” or “SMOKE FREE” signs are required in places where smoking is not permitted. For more information, please refer to Municipal Code Chapters 5.42 and 7.13 or contact Avalon Schultz, Associate Planner, at (510) 675-5321 or ASchultz@unioncity.org

No alcohol is allowed at any of our parks!

There is no exclusive use of any Union City park. Park permits only reserve picnic areas and BBQ units. There may be other events going on at the parks simultaneously.

Sports Fields!!

Union City has several sporting fields available for reservation. Fields can be used for a variety of sports. You need to have a permit in order to use the field for any type of organized game or practice. For more information, please contact the sports field staff at the Sports Center at (510) 675-5805.

Inflatable Bounce Houses!

They are only allowed in designated areas and require a generator. You may not have a bounce house at any Union City park without a park reservation.
