Jack Sands and Polly Olson were both honored this year by City Council for all of their outstanding work at the Ruggieri Senior Center over the years.
Jack Sands
SENIORS
The Ruggieri Senior Center is currently looking for both paid and volunteer instructors to teach dance, fitness, art, drama, country line dancing and health and wellness. If you have a teaching background in any of these areas and enjoy working with seniors (ages 50+) then please contact the Ruggieri Center at 510-675-5445.
Super Seniors
Since 1998, when the Ralph and Mary Ruggieri Senior Center opened, volunteer Jack Sands became an essential part of the initial success of the center because of his outstanding volunteer service. Jack has been a valued honorary staff member in the office of the Ruggieri Center by assisting customers and members who attend the center with any concerns or questions that they have. Jack has assisted with the planning and implementation of many of the special events that are held at the Ruggieri Center, including such annual events as; the Larry "O" Car Show, The Step Out For Seniors Health and Fitness Expo and many of our holiday themed lunches . Jack has also served as our official trip chaperone for the many outings that our seniors take each year and because of his assistance, the seniors are able to feel safe and secure knowing that he is there to assist them and ensure that they will have an enjoyable time. Jack has proven himself to be responsible, dependable and committed to the center and its programs and because of this, has helped the Ruggieri Center to succeed and thrive, even now, seventeen years later since it first opened.
Polly Olson In 2004, Polly Olson began to attend the Ralph and Mary Ruggieri Senior Center and during that time, has become a valued and essential part of the center because of all of her outstanding volunteer service. Polly has been a dedicated exercise instructor for the center and has taught both the Fit and Fun and the Sit and Fit classes each Monday and Tuesday morning and averages over 50 students per class and she also assists her fellow teachers with their classes throughout the week. Polly has been largely responsible for both creating and organizing two hugely successful fundraising special events for the center. These events include the Monster Cash Bash in October 2012 and the Mardi Gras Masquerade in March 2014 and these events raised enough money to allow the center to purchase greatly needed fitness equipment for the seniors to use for exercise during the day. Polly has shown herself to be resourceful, imaginative and passionate in her service for the center and it is these qualities that have allowed the Senior Center to grow and flourish in the past ten years.

Smoking and Tobacco Regulations !!!
Did you know that smoking regulations have been adopted by the City of Union City? Union City promotes a healthy living environment & protects non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke where they live, work, & play. In November, 2010, the City Council restricted smoking in rental complex units, unenclosed common areas, & outdoor dining spaces. Tobacco retailers also need to obtain a local Tobacco Retailer License.
Key Requirements:
38
• Smoking is prohibited in all rental complexes (2+ units) common areas (enclosed & open). • As of Feb. 23, 2012, smoking in any rental complex, including balconies & patios, is prohibited. • Smoking is prohibited in all outdoor dining areas of restaurants & surrounding 25 feet. • Smoking is prohibited in parks, public events, and service areas (i.e., bus stops, ATMs). • Clear, conspicuous, and unambiguous “NO SMOKING” or “SMOKE FREE” signs are required in places where smoking is not permitted. For more information, please refer to Municipal Code Chapters 5.42 and 7.13 or contact Avalon Schultz, Associate Planner, at (510) 675-5321 or ASchultz@unioncity.org
