Parent & Me Literacy Jamboree • Ages: 3-5 years in conjunction with the First 5 program.

Many parents are looking for new and fun ideas to enjoy with their children. Join UCLS for our Parent and Me Literacy Jamboree. Our program will introduce you and your child to the importance of literature exposure at a young age, while providing socialization with other young children and families. Accompanied by a parent/caregiver, your toddler and/ or preschooler will be introduced to an educational program focusing on kindergarten readiness and enhancing your child’s social and emotional development. Throughout the session, you and your child will experience fun learning activities, art projects, constructive playtime, music and story time. Our goal is to help you learn how critical your child’s social/emotional development is to their academic success, as well as providing information and/or tools necessary to support them through this phase of development. Parents and caregivers will enjoy informative adult conversations and learn about the community resources available through workshops.

Water Exercise • Ages 13 and older

This class takes place in chest deep water and the buoyancy of the water creates a state of near weightlessness so it is ideal for people who need low-impact workouts. Also, aerobics in water provides resistance, helps tone muscle and exerts force that helps to improve blood flow and lung function. Water exercise provides a challenging workout without the impact and joint stress of land based exercises- it is not too hard or too easy! Non-swimmers are welcome! CODE

NEW!!! Union City CrossFit • Ages 5-16

Instructor: Christopher Robertson CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, CrossFit Kids Certified Location: Kennedy Community Center (Game room) www.unioncitycrossfit.com The CrossFit classes are 60 minutes long divided into two sessions: (1) CrossFit and (2) Study. The first 45 minutes include a classic CrossFit Kids workout. We’ll spend a few minutes making introductions and talking about the class plan for the day. Then we’ll get the kids warmed up usually including a fun activity or game. Once the kids are breathing a little hard, then we’ll give them instruction on a movement or exercise that they will have to do during their workout. We emphasize form over effort, so we’ll spend as much time as needed to make sure the kids get it. Then, we’ll do a group workout- usually 5-15 minutes of two to three exercises. Afterward, we’ll talk about what people did right and where everyone can improve. Our objective is to leave the kids wanting more. The final 15 minutes immediately after the workout is dedicated to reading, writing, doing constructive art or homework! Note: parents are encouraged to provide the study, reading or homework material for their child. • 1st half of class (45 minutes): CrossFit Kids skills, workout & games. • 2nd half of class (15 minutes): Reading, art or homework.

Pre-Teens (12-16): We believe this a crucial age for physical development for sports and any physical activity. We’ll spend a lot of time perfecting proper technique, while emphasizing the importance of fitness. Workouts are more competitive and include team participation – but still a lot of fun. Class length is 60 minutes. Each session is 5 classes. Code 55721 55722 55723 55724 55725 55726 55727 55728 55729 55730 55731 55732

Add your Cell Phone and VoIP Phone to our Emergency Notification System

Union City has joined forces with CityWatch® Notification Systems to send out mass notifications of emergencies, to provide critical information or to ask for public help. A notification may be limited to a specific geographic area or sent Citywide. Information sent may include the description of a lost child, the need to evacuate, or advisement of police or fire activity in your area. Notification information may be sent via: • a recorded voice message • an e-mail • SMS text message • TTY interface Because CityWatch® uses the 911 database, only land-line numbers are automatically included in the system. If you have a cellular or Voice over IP number and would like to be notified on that device, or if you would like an e-mail notification, you must register those telephone numbers and/or e-mail address by completing the registration page on the Union City Web page. To register for and begin receiving Union City CityWatch Notifications, click the CityWatch Link on the Union City Webpage at www. union-city.ca.us.

Please read this carefully before using our website. Because of the unforeseen nature of some large scale emergencies, no one can fully guarantee that you will receive a notification every time. Please keep yourself informed by continuing to monitor other public safety warning and information systems (such as television & radio) whenever possible. Union City will not share or distribute personal information gathered and will use it solely for the purpose of providing emergency notifications.

Zumba Gold

Ruggieri Senior Center 33997 Alvarado-Niles Road Union City, CA 94587

Location: Ruggieri Senior Center Instructor: Erika Eugenio

The Fun Workout for Anyone, Any Age, Any Ability! The creative geniuses at Zumba have introduced Zumba Gold. This program was designed for the older, active adult, a person who hasn't been exercising in a long time or individuals who may be physically limited. The biggest difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba basic is that Zumba Gold is done at a much lower intensity. It's just as much fun, just not as fast! Zumba Gold utilizes the same great Latin styles of music and dance that are used in Zumba basic program. To get more information, please call (510) 675-5495. Smoking and Tobacco Regulations !!!

Did you know that new smoking regulations have been adopted by the City of Union City? Union City promotes a healthy living environment & protects non-smokers from exposure to secondhand smoke where they live, work, & play. In November, 2010, the City Council restricted smoking in rental complex units, unenclosed common areas, & outdoor dining spaces. Tobacco retailers also need to obtain a local Tobacco Retailer License.

Key Requirements:

• Smoking is prohibited in all rental complexes (2+ units) common areas (enclosed & unenclosed). • As of Feb 23, 2012 smoking in any rental complex, including balconies & patios, is prohibited. • Smoking is prohibited in all outdoor dining areas of restaurants & surrounding 25 feet. • Smoking is prohibited in parks, public events, and service areas (i.e., bus stops, ATMs). • Clear, conspicuous, and unambiguous “NO SMOKING” or “SMOKE FREE” signs are required in places where smoking is not permitted. For more information, please refer to Municipal Code Chapters 5.42 and 7.13 or contact Avalon Schultz, Associate Planner, at (510) 675-5321 or ASchultz@unioncity.org

No alcohol is allowed at any of our parks!

There is no exclusive use of any Union City park. Park permits only reserve picnic areas and BBQ units. There may be other events going on at the parks simultaneously.

Sports Fields!!

Union City has several sporting fields available for reservation. Fields can be used for a variety of sports. You need to have a permit in order to use the field for any type of organized game or practice. For more information, please contact the sports field staff at the Sports Center at (510) 675-5805.

Inflatable Bounce Houses!

They are only allowed in designated areas and require a generator. You may not have a bounce house at any Union City park without a park reservation.
