It is always amazing how quickly time passes. It has already been a year since we transitioned the leadership of nationwide like and , to our exciting trip to Israel in October 2022, CHW is transforming to meet the needs of a new generation of donors and volunteers while safeguarding our roots. Our organization is ever-changing and evolving to increase engagement and impact, and to ensure our future.

One of our newest initiatives is , which will enrich donor engagement and boost impact. This year, our annual campaign focus is healthcare, with funding earmarked to support a $3.2 million campaign for the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Unit (PCCCU) at Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem, and the new Institute of Pulmonary Functions and Diseases at Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh). We have collaborated with the LIFE GIVE LOVE, our annual campaign will support heart and lung health. REFLECTiONS FROM A NAiL SALON

i grew up in a family that was in constant survival mode. My father moved to Israel from Morocco with nothing, and my mother came from a large family. Growing up, we lived in a rough neighbourhood at the on the table.

They were with me every step of the way. I ended up having a high-risk pregnancy and was bedridden for several months, which meant my business was on hold. But

CHW SUPPORTS WIZO

• CHW Hadassim and Nahalal Youth Villages have a long Both villages are currently home to Na’aleh youth from Ukraine and Russia, who are receiving extra support and counselling during these troubling times. There is no tension between the students themselves, instead they are showing support for one another. (Two students from Ukraine are pictured to the right.)

• The main concern for everyone is the safety of their immediate family back home. Social workers are working around the clock to ensure that every student has the opportunity to connect regularly with their parents.

• Both villages are prepared to receive refugees from Ukraine, including siblings of Na’aleh students already in Israel.

• WIZO second hand stores across Israel have opened their doors and invited refugees from Ukraine to select any clothing and household items they need as they resettle in Israel.

CHW SUPPORTS HMO

• In early March, Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) sent urgently needed medical supplies for those injured in the Ukrainian crisis. HMO quickly mobilized and packed a truck full of life-saving medical supplies, which were transferred to the Ukrainian embassy in Tel Aviv. These border.

A prolific Tel Aviv urban artist known for his iconic bandaids, Dede (@dedebandaid) utilizes various media to communicate within outdoor spaces. Dede creates art to heal, and he is collaborating with CHW to spread the concept around the world.

In Dede's words:

Itall began towards the end of my military service. Designing the bandaid started as something very personal, but then it became much bigger. I discovered more and more meaning around the bandaid and received hundreds of emails and stories from people who could relate to my bandaids. I keep finding more meaning with each new location and each bandaid project.

My bandaid drawing began as selftherapy, although I didn’t fully know

it at the time. Over the years and through my paintings, I have shared my story with so many people. In fact, many of those people, whom I have never met, still reach out and share their very personal problems with me.

Art helped me heal in many ways. I feel much better with every bandaid I paint, especially because soldiers receive minimal mental health support after they finish their military service. I’m happy to know

I have helped so many people, and grateful they shared their stories with me. It’s about meeting the bandaid outside at a critical moment. It gives them a place and a platform to share and talk openly about their problems. They can see that they’re not alone.

I always look for new ways to combine my bandaid in real and different contexts. I want to use the bandaid in new ways and in new locations to touch people's lives.

Creating Art to Heal

In this specific project with CHW, I think about all the people in the hospital I can maybe help just a little, especially the children. It fills my heart. I wish I could help them physically, but art is what I know. I love to help and support in the way I can.

I was featured all over the world, including Canada. I went to Montreal a few years ago and painted a mural there. It is definitely one of the places I miss and want to return to again and again. I loved it! I loved the people I met. I felt a strong sense of support and found Montreal to be an extremely fun community.

I would love to continue collaborating around the world. I want to share my art and keep spreading the concept and the bandaid. I truly believe that everyone can use some kind of fix, and if we all worked together, even just a little, we could heal each other.

The Institute of Pulmonary Functions and Diseases at Shamir Medical Center treats 4,600 respiratory, lung, and lung function disease patients each year. The Institute provides counseling for the inpatient and surgical wards, and also performs assessments of high-risk patients before surgery.

The Institute conducts advanced research in the elds of lung physiology and sleep medicine, and clinical studies of pharmaceutical companies and non-invasive respiratory best practices among hospitalized patients.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT NOW

Shamir Medical Center urgently needs your help to rebuild the Institute for three primary reasons:

In recent years, the hospital has seen a steady increase in lung disease and lung cancer. In addition, recent data indicates a signi cant increase in reported damages to lung function due to COVID-19. A 50% increase has been predicted in the number of patients we treat every year, which will require a much larger designated area, fully equipped with devices and highly trained medical personnel to meet the needs of the population.

The current site of the Pulmonary Institute is a small and outdated facility that dates back to the early-mid 1900s. Despite repeated attempts to maintain the facility, the patchwork over the years has resulted in a substandard facility and a poor overall experience for patients.

The Institute must be evacuated in order to allow for the building of a new Emergency Medicine Department and Surgical Tower. The rst step to becoming the largest hospital in Israel is rebuilding and expanding the gateway and heart of the medical centre. This means establishing a new emergency medicine department and a hospitalization tower on the site of the oldest buildings. The new Pulmonary Institute will be built at the top of the existing laboratory building. This is a prime location as it is situated next to the new Emergency Medicine Department and Surgical Tower. The start date for laying the foundations for the new tower is September 2022.

GIVE LOVE

The new, state-of-the-art Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Unit (PCCCU) at Hadassah Hospital is the only one of its kind in Jerusalem. Pediatric cardiac critical care patients have unique needs, which is why we have a dedicated unit, distinct from the general critical care unit. For these infants, precise diagnoses and immediate, advanced treatments are critical. That’s why our compassionate, dedicated medical professionals are vital – to help keep the tiniest, most fragile hearts pumping strong.

Congenital heart defects comprise the most common type of birth defect. Currently, the global incidence of congenital heart disease at birth has been estimated at eight to 12 cases per 1,000 live births. These statistics highlight the overwhelming demand for advanced pediatric cardiac critical care.

HOW YOU CAN HELP US SAVE LIVES NOW

The PCCCU needs Isolation Bays. Epidemics of antibiotic-resistant infections are occurring more frequently, dramatically impacting patients’ morbidity and mortality. As a result, inpatient departments are often shut down while they are disinfected, so it is critical to have isolations rooms for patients who have acquired such infections.

Each isolation room is out tted with an anteroom for disinfecting hands and gowning before entering the patient room. Entrance to each room is through two sets of doors. The isolation rooms are equipped with a special ltration system to clean and recycle the air and keep the infected air from entering the general hallway. All medical equipment is used only in that room for that patient to avoid transferring the infection via the machines.

JUST breathe

Emily Gur was a busy mother of two, working full time and training to become a volunteer EMT (emergency medical

asthma since her childhood in Siberia, but in early 2019, she suddenly started experiencing a series of breathing issues that made even simple tasks, like walking or showering, nearly impossible. “I went to my doctor, and he listened to my lungs and said it sounds like pneumonia. He gave

I was not getting better. He tried giving me inhalers and steroids, but it didn’t help.”

Emily had visited doctors and specialists over the years regarding her breathing issues, but followup appointments were rare. Her lung function was very poor, and she needed treatment immediately. “They

me on steroids, which did little to help. It caused me to get bigger and bigger. During the time I was on steroids, I gained 40kg.”

Her breathing soon deteriorated so much that she had to be taken to the emergency

several blood tests, she was admitted to the hospital for further investigation.

Dr. Fox reassured Emily that his team would do everything in their power to help determine the cause of her breathing troubles.

Several tests for lung function were completed, and doctors were able to carefully tailor a specialized treatment for Emily’s complex condition. According to Dr. Fox:

Emily had regular weekly followups with they only meet every six months. Once Emily’s breathing was under control, she was able to end the vicious cycle of weight gain caused by the steroids. She continued to work on her health and had bariatric surgery to help her reach her goals. Her lung functions are greatly improved, and she has returned to a normal life.

Emily received a breakthrough treatment at the Institute of Pulmonary Functions and Diseases at Shamir Medical Center.

"Just as her condition stabilized, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. Being high-risk meant that Emily had to take extra precautions, and essentially has worked from home over the past year and a half. Emily and her family recently contracted COVID-19, but she was grateful to have received her vaccinations.

“I was very worried, and I did consult with the hospital because I was supposed to be there the very next Thursday for a checkup. We did a call and consulted Dr. Fox, who said if there is no respiratory aggravation, then it is not serious. A week later, I came for my checkup, and my lung function had not changed.”

Emily is back to leading a full life and has never felt

In her ‘spare’ time, Emily is an active EMT volunteer, with her medical bag in tow, responding to nearby medical emergencies. “I want to thank Dr. Fox for his help, assistance with the lung treatment, and consultations, and for helping me to get back on my feet. I can actually live my life and not just watch it go by.”

THE WOMAN WHO iNSPiRED GENERATiONS TO USE THEiR POWER FOR GOOD

saved 11,000 orphans from perishing in the Holocaust, Freiman’s work

Betsy Rigal, Lillian Freiman’s granddaughter, has written about her accomplished grandmother who was born Lillian Bilsky in Mattawa, Ontario in 1885. The family was large and the home was always full of relatives and friends, and open to new immigrants and those in need. As a young woman, she organized the Hebrew Benevolent Society in Ottawa, which foreshadowed her life’s work.

Henrietta Szold, who founded Hadassah in the United States in 1912, and Lillian Freiman, who founded the organization in Canada lives. Henrietta Szold had her heart broken, never married, never had children, never knew material comfort and lived, at the time, to the advanced age of 84. Lillian Freiman, got married, had children, lived a relatively privileged life, and passed away at the young age of 55.

In 1903, she married Archibald Jacob Freiman, who owned the Freiman’s Department Store, and the couple had three children: Dorothy (Alexandor, 1906–2000), Lawrence (1909–1986) and Queene Esther (Luxenberg, 1912–1997). Never letting a busy family life stand in the way of her desire to correct injustice in the world, she turned the family home at 149 Somerset Street West in Ottawa into her personal headquarters, hosting meetings for her countless causes.

Like Szold, who not only founded Hadassah, but also a night school, the Jewish Publication Society, and

George V bestowed on her the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1934, such an honour in Canada.

Dorothy Alexandor served several terms as National Vice-President, Audrey Freiman was President of the Ottawa Council of Hadassah, and Queene Luxenberg was President of a CHW Toronto chapter.

Vineberg-Goodman recalls that her mother, Etta Caplan, her aunts, and all their Jewish Ottawa friends formed the Bertha Slonemsky Chapter of CHW. “My mother ran an enormous city-wide Bazaar every year to raise substantial dollars to support their projects in Israel…. [Freiman] continues to be an important role model for all of us in our family. She was unique in her time, in that she was not afraid to speak up for the underdog or the under-served. She was comfortable lobbying the government, right up to the Prime Minister.”

Today, a passion for CHW is being passed on to the next generation of Lillian Freiman’s descendants. Ruth Alexandor, great-granddaughter of Lillian Freiman, describes her ancestor as “an icon in the family.” Alexandor visited Nahalal in her 20s and “saw some of the fruits of my great-grandmother’s work.”

looking for a deeper commitment to the organization. She met the new CEO, Lisa Colt-Kotler, who suggested Alexandor use her skills as a leadership coach at the senior level to help CHW facilitate its strategic planning process. Alexandor took on the project in a volunteer capacity.

Alexandor explains, “My hope is to continue to use my expertise in strategy work and team coaching, they can be, and to be engaged and empowered to do the work they want to be doing. That would really be meaningful work for me.”

Ruth Alexandor is carrying on the legacy of her great-grandmother, Lillian Freiman, by using her power for good.

THE AMBASSADOR GOES TO NAHALAL

Thank you to Ambassador Lisa Stadelbauer and the Embassy of Canada to Israel for taking the time to visit CHW Nahalal Youth Village on December 13, 2021. Ambassador Stadelbauer learned about the important work being done with youth and how CHW is empowering women in Israel and Canada.

Ambassador Stadelbauer had the opportunity to hear directly from students in the agricultural track who operate and run a cutting-edge dairy. The dairy farm supplies milk daily to Tnuva, Israel’s leading dairy company. CHW funded this venture philanthropy opportunity for Nahalal several years ago.

The Ambassador also visited the CHW Nahalal Apiary to see the students hard at work with their beekeeping. The bee farm produces high-quality honey that is sold at local markets.

CHW centres across Canada collaborated on A raising over $95,000 in support of the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Unit (PCCCU) at Hadassah Hospital.

On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, participants enjoyed a virtual tour curated and hosted by artist Murielle Cohen (pictured right). Her insightful narration and guided tour through Tel Aviv’s hundreds of viewers nationwide.

On November 30, 2021, CHW Montreal Centre held an Online Chanukah Party Bingo Party. There was a huge crowd of bingo players, over 180 strong, who joined on Zoom for a fun evening of Bingo and prizes. The evening raised over $7,000 in support of CHW Nahalal.

MAXIMIZE GIVING, MINIMIZE TAXES USING YOUR CPP

You don’t have to be rich and famous to leave a substantial charitable gift and enjoy significant tax savings. Many fortunate readers don’t need their monthly Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits to pay bills. That ‘never spend money’ only gets taxed, reinvested and then taxed again.

The CPP Philanthropy™ strategy uses your CPP benefits to fund a permanent tax-exempt Life Insurance policy, creating a substantial windfall for your family while also continuing your support of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW).

A RECENT CASE

Sue and Al, both 65, are married. Each receives $1,100/monthly in CPP benefits, for a total of about $26,000 a year. They live in Ontario and pay tax at the highest marginal tax rate, 53.53%.

Strategy #1: Life Insurance Policy Owned by CHW, Tax Savings Now

Create a charitable gift of $1.5 million using joint-and-last-to-die Life Insurance, with the CHW as owner and beneficiary of the policy. Use the CPP benefit to pay the policy premiums and receive an annual charitable donation receipt of $26,000, mitigating the tax payable on the pension benefit and replacing it instead with a large gift.

Strategy #2: Life Insurance Policy Owned Personally, Tax Savings Later

As above, use the CPP benefits to pay the premiums on a joint-and-lastto-die Life Insurance policy for $1.5 million. CHW, as beneficiary, will receive the insurance payout on the death of the second spouse. Their estate will receive a donation receipt for $1.5 million and save the family about $750,000 in estate taxes.

Strategy #3: Donate RRSP/RRIF By Will or Beneficiary Designation RRSP/RRIF will be fully taxed as income (53.53% in Ontario) on the second death.

A $1 million RRSP/RRIF will be worth only $460,000 to their family. This strategy designates CHW as beneficiary of the RRSP/RRIF which mitigates the RRSP/RRIF taxes. Use the CPP benefits to buy a $1.5 million joint-last-to-die insurance policy, naming the family as beneficiary.

On the second death, the family receives the $1.5 million tax-free. This produces an additional $940,000 for the family (compared to $460,000) and a $1 million gift to CHW!

Strategy #4: Charity begins at home. Create a “pension” for your children and grandchildren

Use the CPP benefits to buy a $1.5 million joint-last-to-die insurance policy. Designate your children and grandchildren as beneficiaries. Assuming the insurance proceeds earn 5% annually, your descendants will receive a $75,000 “pension” every year in perpetuity.
