Giving With Purpose Marilyn Libin National President “When you’re surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.” – Howard Schultz Dear Friends, After all the amazing work accomplished by past CHW National Presidents, I am so proud to be devoting the next two years of my life to this organization. I am so honoured to be serving with such a dedicated group of supporters, who are committed to CHW’s mission, vision, and values. Our common goal of passionately supporting Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel and Canada not only gives us purpose, but brings us together as a community. Together, we will ensure a strong future for CHW. Although I am a Canadian, I was raised to love Israel. I recall my parents dancing around the room when Israel was declared a state. They made a rule for our family: each of their four children, upon turning 16, must spend the summer in Israel. And so, at the age of 16, I spent two months in Israel. I fell very much in love with the country. When thinking about Israel, I am often reminded of a quote by Theodor Herzl, “It is true that we aspire to our ancient land. But what we want in that ancient land is a new blossoming of the Jewish spirit.” That is what I found on my first trip to Israel, and it is what I see every time I return. Being a strong supporter of both Israel and our local community, I instantly connected to the mission of CHW. I have visited our projects in Israel several times and am extremely impressed and inspired by the great work being done by our organization. Helping children, improving healthcare, and supporting women gives CHW a real purpose. Our giving positively impacts thousands of lives each year. During the Centennial “Celecation” Trip to Israel, I fell in love with Israel all over again, but this time I was side-by-side with the generous and passionate supporters of CHW. We saw first-hand how positive an impact CHW has made on the lives of at-risk children and their families. It was an experience I will cherish forever. No matter how or why we give, we must be sure to do it with purpose. Purposeful giving is important because it means that we have direction. To move forward with intention, you need to know where you are going. My goal for the organization is to look at change as a positive and find the smoothest path. We are giving with purpose to ensure the future of CHW! Todah Rabah,
Marilyn Libin National President

Redefining Philanthropy Alina Ianson National Executive Director “Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.” — Albert Camus Dear Friends, The world is changing with an ever-greater speed. As we continue to move forward with our century-old mission of passionately supporting Children, Healthcare, and Women, we find ourselves in the midst of a paradigm shift. The 21st century is quickly evolving into an era defined by global disruption, as socio-economic changes and ground-breaking technological advancements are having a major impact and are turning standard modes of operation, models, and assumptions upside down in every area of life, including the field of philanthropy. When we are talking about 21st century philanthropy, we are not only looking forward toward a successful future, but also looking back at what made CHW sustainable and relevant for more than 100 years. So, what are the characteristics of success going to look like for CHW in the 21st century? PASSION: Passion drives all philanthropy. We respond to what we are passionate about and what concerns us. LEADERSHIP: Leadership at all levels is critical to successful efforts. INVOLVEMENT: When we are involved, we make informed decisions, which in turn, makes our impact that much greater. ACCOUNTABILITY: Act with integrity at all levels, evaluate accomplishments, and learn how we can be more effective. FLEXIBILITY: Effective organizations adapt to ever-changing environments, constantly evolving to meet and conquer new challenges. As much as some things change, some remain the same. At the end of the day, Old is the new New. And common human values are never out of style.

Dear Friends, I hope this letter finds all of you in the best of health and spirits.
THE SHAMIR MEDICAL CENTRE (ASSAF HAROFEH)
Sometimes I think that working in a big hospital such as ours can be quite a rollercoaster ride: our departments are full of patients, our operating rooms are working around the clock, and our doctors are working overtime, in order to save lives.
Recently, we saved the life of a 16-year-old girl, who was hospitalized after a severe allergic Director General Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach reaction. She reached the hospital with respiratory failure and was immediately treated in the CHW Debbie Eisenberg and Gary Levene PICU. The newly updated PICU is truly life-saving, thanks to the support of CHW!
The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) is currently on the verge of a profound transformation, from a major hospital into an expansive medical campus. Hospital grounds will soon be increased by 60%, additional medical facilities will come under our responsibility, and the number of potential patients will grow extensively. This is a challenging time for us, a time of change and a time of growth. We wish to thank you again for your generous support, your friendship, and donations that really do save lives! Warmest regards, Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach Director General
Dear Friends, It has been an incredible year for CYJ, and I would like to share some of the highlights with you.
CANADIAN YOUNG JUDAEA National Executive Director Risa Epstein
Machane Lev, Canada’s first and only Jewish summer camp for the LGBTQ+ community was such a huge success that CYJ is now running year-round activities for the community. We are so proud that JOLT, our social action program, has expanded from Toronto and Montreal to include Vancouver and Halifax. This February, we are hosting our Leadership Convention in Toronto, with participation from coast to coast. The demand for our programs is at an all-time high and our summer camps and Israel program are brimming with campers.
There is no doubt that the ongoing support we receive from CHW has made all of this possible. CHW can be proud that by supporting CYJ it is having an impact on the Canadian Jewish community and its future. Together we are building leaders, teaching Jewish values, and engaging youth in thought provoking and meaningful Jewish programs. We thank you for your generosity and support and for ensuring the future of Canadian Young Judaea, Canada’s largest Zionist Youth Movement. Dear Friends, With the advent of the 2019 New Year, we are challenged to continue the record-breaking success that Hadassah International achieved last year, raising the largest amount of funds in a single year in our 30+ year history!
Hadassah International‘s 360 Degree Campaign to renovate the “round” building and bring it up to 21st century standards to accommodate the burgeoning population in Jerusalem and its environs.
Much of our success lies in our new markets and the combination of skilled professionals and dedicated volunteers engaging new donors.
Let’s set our mutual goals high as we dedicate ourselves once again to our sacred mission of improving the health and education of those we serve.
Undoubtedly, CHW contributed to our success with your support of the Nursing Control Station in the Operating Rooms of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. I am so pleased to share with you that progress is being made with

Dear Friends, First, I would like to congratulate Marilyn Libin, the 24th CHW National President, on her recent election and wish her much success. Amazing and significant work is being carried out at our joint projects. CHW Daycare Centres provide babies and toddlers with a solid educational beginning to their lives. CHW Hadassim and Nahalal Children and Youth Villages provide equal and quality education and values, so that its graduates become productive and giving members of society. They also specialize in taking disadvantaged and dysfunctional youth, and helping them bridge social and educational gaps.
The Na’aleh Program provides Jewish teenagers with education and the essential tools to successfully integrate into Israel’s society. The Emergency Centre for Children at High Risk and the CHW Eunice Mouckley Therapeutic Centre at CHW Hadassim save the lives of children and teenagers in distress. I am thankful for the privilege and opportunity we have to continuously help those who need us.

Dear Chaverot, Every year, thousands of students graduate from our schools and youth villages. Each of them leaves with a quality education, confidence, and a set of values to become the leaders of tomorrow. A few months ago, my dream of establishing a network of these talented WIZO graduates was finally realized at a very festive launch event at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. I was truly proud to see hundreds of our graduates taking part in this landmark event and joining our initiative, including two of our most celebrated CHW Hadassim alumni: MK Shelly Yacimovich and Deputy Chairwoman of the Authority for the Advancement of the Status of Women Oshra Yosef Friedman.

The goal of our gift is to help ensure the longevity of our hundred-year-old organization; to help CHW flourish and remain relevant for the next 100 years.”
Toronto, Canada – Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) announced that it has received the largest transformative endowment gift in CHW history from Marla and Aubrey Dan of $6.5 million to be used in Israel to launch the DAN Department of Creative Human Design at Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem as well as the Marla Dan Interventional Radiology Institute at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) in Be’er Ya’akov. Marla and Aubrey Dan are long-time supporters of CHW’s projects and programs. Marla Dan was the CHW National President between 20092014, and continues to provide indispensable leadership and mentorship. Aubrey Dan is a Canadian businessman as well as a Tony-Award® winning theatre producer (MEMPHIS). He is the principal of Dancap Family Investment Office. The donation to the DAN Department of Creative Human Design will provide scholarship support to deserving and qualified students; support guest lecturers, academic seminars and conferences with colleagues from Israel and abroad; support workshops to improve teaching methods and approaches for faculty; facilitate international student exchange; and enable the Department to pursue collaborative efforts with academic institutions and medical centres in Israel and overseas. Alina Ianson, CHW National Executive Director, noted: “The DAN Department of Creative Human Design is the only undergraduate department in Industrial Design in the world focusing on the design of tools and products for the benefit of overlooked populations with special needs, including the physically challenged, the elderly, and the very young.” The donation to the Marla Dan Interventional Radiology Institute will provide healthcare professionals with modern tools and equipment, so patients requiring urgent care are never turned away. The updates to the Institute will ensure patients have access to life- saving procedures and a chance for a full recovery. According to Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach, Director General of The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh), “The donation to the Marla Dan Interventional Radiology Institute will help secure state of the art non-invasive radiological equipment, ensuring the hospital can continue to provide the best in personal care, diagnosis, and medical treatment.” ORAH Magazine Winter 2019

Together Again Lior was referred to the CHW Eunice Mouckley Therapeutic Centre at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village following many failed attempts to integrate him into the school system. Lior had been expelled from two school districts and had major behavioral challenges; he was aggressive and showed total disregard for authority. Upon his arrival, Shelly, the Therapeutic Centre Director, and her team of psychologists, worked closely with Lior to understand the root cause of his issues. After contacting Lior’s parents to learn more about his home life, they discovered that Lior was living in a very hostile home environment. Lior’s parents, Shai and Deena, were locked in a bitter divorce battle. After being the victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Shai, Deena was trying to save herself from future violence. Lior’s parents were so busy with their own problems that Lior had been severely neglected. When Shelly approached Lior’s parents to come and be a part of the treatment process, Shai refused to cooperate. Deena; however, agreed to attend counseling sessions with Lior, and this is when a change began to take place. Through the treatment process, the Therapeutic Centre team were able to understand the complex family situation, and develop a plan to help them heal together. They referred Deena to a centre that supports women who have been victims of domestic violence. Lior received treatment through one-on-one therapy, as well as animal therapy, with the primary goal of teaching him compassion and how to care for others. After a few months of individual therapy, Lior and Deena began to have treatment together at the Therapeutic Centre. The open communication
enabled the mother and son to work together to better understand one another. Deena once again began to assume the maternal role and give her son the support he desperately needed.
“The CHW Therapeutic team were better able to understand the complex family situation, and come up with a plan to help them heal together.” As Deena continues to seek treatment for the emotional trauma she suffered, the CHW Therapeutic Centre team felt it best for Lior to live in a Family Unit at CHW Hadassim. While Shai is no longer a part of Lior’s life, Lior now visits his mother each week and they have established a healthy relationship. At CHW Hadassim, Lior was given the opportunity to live in a safe and happy place with people who look after his well-being. The psychologists are confident that Lior will be able to return home with his mother within the next six months. It is because of the CHW Eunice Mouckley Therapeutic Centre that Lior’s life was forever changed and Deena was given the support that she needed. Now that they are together again, they have grown stronger and are ready to move forward as a family.

A Second Chance
All childhoods should be happy, but sometimes life has other plans.
Sofia wanted to run and play with the other kids in her Ukrainian neighbourhood. At five years old, she didn’t understand why she wasn’t like other children. Instead of going to the park and taking swimming lessons, Sofia spent most of her life in and out of hospitals. Her parents took her to dozens of doctors, but no one was able to diagnose her. Sofia’s health condition was declining and her parents thought that their only child was going to die. A family friend suggested that they go to Israel to seek help. After medical examinations, Sofia was admitted to the CHW Debbie Eisenberg and Gary Levene Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh). Upon arrival at the PICU, the doctors noticed Sofia’s eyelids were drooping, she was struggling to breathe, and she could not properly speak. In fact, it appeared that Sofia was going into respiratory failure, and the doctors knew they needed to act immediately to save her life. Using the state-of-the-art resources at the PICU, they were able to diagnose Sofia with a rare autoimmune disease called Myasthenia Gravis. This rare disease damages the nerves and weakens the skeletal muscles that are responsible for moving certain parts of the body, including the arms and legs, and those that control breathing. It can affect one’s ability to chew, speak, and even swallow. It was the first time in her young life that doctors were able to successfully diagnose her condition, which meant treatment could finally begin.
“It was the first time in her young life that doctors were able to successfully diagnose her condition, which meant treatment could finally begin.” After a great deal of consultation, the PICU medical team understood that Sofia’s case was severe and that they needed to take a more extreme and specialized approach. Using a procedure called plasmapheresis, healthy plasma soon replaced the harmful antibodies in Sofia’s blood. The treatment was incredibly successful! After only a few weeks in the PICU, Sofia was given a clean bill of health and was told that she is now in remission. Sofia was finally able to live her life like other five year olds; she started drawing pictures, eating solid foods, and was finally able to run around and play with other children. The PICU medical team gave this little girl a second chance at life. The incredible love and care that Sofia and her family received at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) inspired them to stay in Israel. They have since made Aliyah and are now living in Ashkelon where Sofia attends school. The family is so appreciative of the remarkable care that they received and continue to regularly visit the doctors who saved Sofia’s life.

Up For The Challenge Jomana grew up in Kfar Kana, a small town north of Nazareth. She graduated from high school with excellent grades in physics, chemistry, and math. After graduation, she was accepted into Hadassah Academic College (HAC) to study Communication Disorders. Coming from a small town to the noisy centre of Jerusalem wasn’t easy for Jomana. She had to take a four-hour bus ride each Saturday to be ready for classes on Sunday mornings, and then each Thursday she would make the long trek back home again. Jomana soon found herself adjusting to the schedule, and began using her long commute to complete her school work. After graduating from HAC, Jomana received a scholarship from Alyn Rehabilitation Hospital in exchange for a two-year commitment to work at the hospital. The two years turned into nine, during which she completed a master’s degree in Communication Disorders at Tel Aviv University. In 2015, Jomana began working at the CHW Centre for Clinical Training & Community Care. At first, she found the transition from working in a hospital environment to working in a clinic setting to be challenging. In the clinic, each patient session was only 45 minutes, so she had to stay focused to make the most of their time. She had to work hard and study new methods of therapy, but she soon felt herself rising to the challenge, overcoming each obstacle, and successfully working with her new patients. For example, Jomana recently worked with a three-year-old boy from East Jerusalem. As the youngest of six children, Daniel was a late talker and came to speech therapy with some behavioural issues. He was highly uncooperative
at the beginning of treatment; often yelling or throwing objects out of frustration. By this time, thanks to all her work at the CHW Centre, Jomana found herself thriving in challenging situations. She worked hard to gain Daniel’s trust, and was soon able to sit comfortably with him through each session.
“She soon felt herself rising to the challenge, overcoming each obstacle, and successfully working with her new patients. ” Jomana also began working with Daniel’s parents, showing them how to encourage their son to speak. Now, after many successful weeks of treatment, Daniel greets Jomana with a big smile at the start of each session. At home, Daniel now happily communicates with his parents and siblings on a regular basis, and his parents are so proud of how far he has come. Currently, Jomana now loves working at the CHW Centre. Her work brings her a great deal of satisfaction and she has learned to celebrate each new success with her patients. She is so happy to have found a place where she can not only learn and grow each day, but where she can positively impact the lives of those in need.

CHW Calgary is proud that the 2018 Toy Drive provided toys, movie passes, and gift cards at the ACH and JFS. This mitzvah project supports the local community and reflects CHW’s values in investing in Children, Healthcare, and Women. Scholarship at Mount Royal University CHW Calgary has established a scholarship at Mount Royal University to enable a full-time student enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in Social Innovation and Non-profit Studies to continue their studies. The first award was presented in September, 2017, in honour of CHW’s Centennial year. THE POWER OF
COLLABORATION Two CHW projects recently embarked on a new partnership! CHW Netanya Technological High School and CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village have initiated a project of getting to know one another through baking.
This partnership brings together girls from CHW Hadassim’s family units with teenagers from the Patisserie Program at CHW Netanya. Every month, around twenty children gather in the Patisserie classroom at CHW Netanya to bake something together. Since the beginning of the shool year, the program has already seen immense success and felt the positive impact of the cooperation the program fosters. The girls from CHW Hadassim come from severe situations and many are suffering from emotional trauma. All are undergoing 24
ORAH Magazine Winter 2019
counselling and therapeutic support. They arrive at CHW Hadassim in need of a warm and loving home atmosphere. The new program offers them a healthy and therapeutic outlet for their pain. The children from CHW Netanya also come from challenging backgrounds, many with severe behavioural issues. While getting to know one another, they are also finding a positive outlet through baking. The students have gained exposure to new people and new skills. Above and beyond this, the children feel appreciated for being asked to participate in this new program. The partnership, initiated by Benny Shai, Principal of CHW Netanya, was created with the goal of sharing school resources and helping at-risk teens make new friends. So far, the collaboration has been a success!

SUSTAINER SUSTAINER PROFILE
Randi Winter
For me, the question is not why I became a CHW Sustainer, but rather, how could I not? Arriving in Vancouver, knowing no one, and having no nearby relatives or kids in school to provide a social outlet, CHW became my first Vancouver networking system. Well over 40 years later, it is still a cherished networking system, where I know I can both give and receive. I truly appreciate both!

ORAH Magazine Winter 2019
There are many different kinds of friendships, but the ones based on tikkun olam, a shared desire to make a difference in the world, set those friendships apart. They may be the same friends we go out with, belong to book club with, exercise with, or have playdates for our kids with, but when we get together for a higher purpose, outside of ourselves and outside of the country where we live; it adds a very rich and rewarding level to the bonds of friendship. I must admit that for a few years in the middle, I was not as active, but Atid Chapter always had at least one event each year that I attended. In 2014, when Claudia Goldman told me about her upcoming national presidency and asked me to be part of it, I agreed and sat on the local executive again and was part of the larger National Leadership Forum. I became a life member almost immediately after joining CHW, and a few years ago also became a CHW Sustainer. My husband and I were particularly motivated by a trip we took to Israel with Claudia Goldman and her husband Paul. My husband, Sam, and I met in Israel, our daughter’s Bat Mitzvah was in Israel, and we were once again without our own family in Vancouver and it was the perfect time to return. Those experiences on every level further motivated our financial and personal commitment to CHW. Above all, CHW has offered me amazing opportunities to give meaningfully from my heart, mind, and pocket. The rewards are priceless.

DISTIN WOMAN/MAN OF DISTINCTION
Susan & John Rose
Susan and John Rose have philanthropy in their blood. Their families are active participants in the community, and they were raised with an expectation not just to give back, but to also take part. Susan’s entire family were all active volunteers; her father was on the Board of Directors at Baycrest, and her mother, aunt, and grandmother were all members of CHW. When Susan married and had her first child, her mother told her it was time to get involved with CHW. Both Susan and her daughter, Melanie, were then gifted with life memberships, making Melanie a 4th generation CHW member. Later on, when all three of her children were in school, Susan became active at CHW. “We knew other families involved in CHW, so it was easy to get involved,” said Susan. John’s family were also philanthropists and active members of the volunteer community, so giving back is a part of who he is. Susan grew up talking about all the volunteer work her parents were doing around the dinner table. She watched her mother open up their home for whatever needed to be done, which is something Susan now loves to do. Susan and John are leading by example so their children will feel connected and see how important it is to support Israel. For years, Susan, who is a member of CHW Toronto Centre’s Tamid Chapter, was in charge of the 30

programme book for Tamid Chapter’s Girls Night Out. Her kids saw what a huge amount of work it was, and how involved and passionate she was about CHW. They have also witnessed their parents’ generosity. ``John and I actually started donating to my Chapter, which is how we first became CHW donors,” said Susan. Before the CHW Centennial “Celecation” Trip in 2017, Susan had only been to Israel once. What she liked most about the trip was seeing how accessible and inclusive CHW projects are. When they visited the CHW Terry Schwarzfeld (Ottawa) Daycare, it really made an impact on Susan. She spoke with an Arab mother of twins, about how the children were learning Hebrew at school and English at home. “It was just a normal conversation between mothers,” said Susan. “We were getting along, there was nothing political. And that is where it first struck me, what an impact CHW is having on Israel.” Both Susan and John were also really taken with Hadassah Academic College (HAC). After visiting the young children at the daycare, and then the teenagers at the youth villages, they enjoyed meeting the young adults at HAC. Susan shared: “We saw how you can spend a lifetime with CHW. HAC has so many wonderful career services for everyone, no matter their religious background or gender. It was so exciting to be the first people to visit CHW’s newest partnership.” For John, the work being done at the CHW Debbie
Eisenberg and Gary Levene PICU really spoke to him. Susan and John both enjoyed meeting Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach, Director General of The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh). They felt the dedication of the staff was so personal and showed the extra level of care they give to everyone. During the trip, they also spent a great deal of time with CHW leadership. They found it inspiring to see how hard everyone works and that was one of the reasons why they made their gift to CHW. The other reason was because of how impressed they were after seeing CHW projects firsthand. “John and I tend to give most where we have a personal experience with an organization, and where we are most involved,” explained Susan. “We saw where the money is going and how CHW is running and how everyone is benefitting, and we think it is money well spent. It’s so nice to be part of an organization with such a great history in Canada AND Israel.” When asked what she would say to others who are thinking of making a Woman/Man of Distinction gift, Susan said, “Giving to CHW is worthwhile because it makes you feel that what you’re doing really makes a difference. Knowing our gift is going to a CHW project we visited makes it that much more special to us. We know our gift will make a difference.” ORAH Magazine Winter 2019

VALOUR WOMAN OF VALOUR
Charlotte Levene
Charlotte Levene has been a member of CHW for almost 60 years. Her mother was a dedicated CHW leader and supporter, often hosting meetings at the family home. Charlotte witnessed the dedication of volunteers and the passion of CHW leadership as she grew up, so it is no surprise that she was inspired to join CHW herself. After Charlotte was married in 1949, she came to live in Kitchener with her husband, Martin. Along with a few other newlyweds, Charlotte started the Sharon Chapter. She was president of her chapter more than once and has fond memories of hosting meetings and teas at her home. Like her Zionist parents, Charlotte loves Israel, and has visited many times. The first time she went, was with Martin in 1962. “It was very exciting when we flew over Israel the first time, we couldn’t believe we were really there,” she said. Every trip to Israel was very different and very exciting in its own way, but Charlotte’s first trip stands out in her mind. Charlotte and Martin were travelling with two other couples, and because they were members of CHW, they visited CHW Hadassim. Charlotte and Martin were always passionate supporters of children, and to this day, CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village remains close to Charlotte’s heart. When Charlotte’s son, Gary, married Debbie Eisenberg, Charlotte made Debbie a lifetime member of CHW. Debbie didn’t come from a CHW
Martinz’l and Charlotte Levene
home like Charlotte did, but Charlotte knew Debbie would find a place for herself at CHW. And she was right; Debbie Eisenberg was the first CHW National President from Kitchener-Waterloo and is currently the Immediate Past President. Charlotte has successfully passed on her passion for Israel and CHW’s mission to the next generation of CHW leadership. Reading about other Women of Valour in ORAH magazine is one of the things that influenced Charlotte to become one herself, along with her trips to Israel and her many years of supporting CHW. “I’ve always supported Israel, and this is an even bigger way to continue my support,” she said. Charlotte shared that visiting Israel, and seeing our projects firsthand, made her decide to become a major supporter of CHW. “Seeing the great work done at CHW youth villages, daycare centres, hospitals, and all the projects supported by CHW is how my gift gives back to me,” said Charlotte. “I love the country of Israel, and with our help it will certainly continue to blossom and grow.” ORAH Magazine Winter 2019

CHW Tribute Gala On Saturday, October 27, 2018, an intimate group of members, donors, volunteers, and affiliates attended the CHW Tribute Gala, in Toronto, in honour of Debbie Eisenberg.
Comedian Joel Chasnoff
The Gala raised a net profit of $91,000 in support of the CHW Debbie Eisenberg and Gary Levene PICU at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) in Israel. Everyone in attendance had an incredible evening: the food was delicious, the tributes to Debbie were inspiring, and of course, Joel Chasnoff’s performance was hilarious. It was a night to remember, and the perfect way to honour CHW’s 23rd National President. Following the event, the centrepieces (a variety of stuffed toys) were proudly donated to the Jewish Family & Child Drive for Dreidels Chanukah Gift Drive. We look forward to seeing everyone at future CHW events, and thank you for helping to improve lives and change the world! Kochi ’s Brownies These deliciously gooey, mouthwatering brownies are an original recipe created by CHW Netanya Technological High School Patisserie Program Teacher Kochi Hashai
∞∞∞∞
Ingredients: 2 cups (300 grams) dark chocolate | 2 cups (300 grams) unsalted butter or margarine | 6 eggs | 1 1/2 cups (330 grams) granulated sugar | 1/2 cup (100 grams) all-purpose flour | 1/3 cup (40 grams) cocoa | Pinch of salt | Optional: 1 cup (200 grams) hazelnuts, walnuts or almonds
1. Preheat oven to 160oC (320oF). Prepare metal pan with greased parchment paper (square 9x9 pan) and set it aside 2. Using a bain-marie (also known as a water bath or double boiler), melt the chocolate and butter together 3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until fluffy 4. Add the melted chocolate and butter into the eggs and sugar mixture, and then slowly add the remaining dry ingredients 5. Blend gently until smooth
6. If using nuts, you can now add them into the mixture and blend together. Alternatively, you can sprinkle them on top of mixture once it is in the pan 7. Pour into prepared pan, ensuring the mixture is evenly distributed, and then place pan on centre rack in oven 8. After 20 minutes, check the brownies with a wooden toothpick, adding 5-10 more minutes if needed 9. Let cool in pan for 30 minutes before cutting and/or serving Goes perfectly with coconut or vanilla icecream.

LEADERSHIP IN CONVERSATION TOVA TRAIN CHW TORONTO PRESIDENT How did you first get involved with CHW? When I was 17 years old, I moved from Edmonton to Toronto to study theatre at York University. I was there for four years, and then soon after I graduated, I met my husband Marshall. At first, I was part of another Jewish organization, but many of the women were much older than me. I was a young woman looking for friends, and I didn’t have any children yet, so when my husband’s neighbour from childhood, Francie Kussner, asked me to join a local Chapter, I soon gravitated to CHW. Actually, many of my friends were not born in Toronto, and many of them found their way to CHW for the same reasons that I did. After my first Chapter closed down, I became a part of Tamid Chapter, where I remain to this day. What do you find most challenging about being a Centre President? Keeping ahead of the email. Email is always on my mind. I will open an email to read it, but not have time to respond and I immediately feel guilty. 52
ORAH Magazine Winter 2019
What would you tell someone who was thinking about getting involved with their local Centre? Although there are a lot of organizations that support Israel, CHW projects are without parallel. The kind of work we do in Israel is unique and really speaks to our people, for example, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh) and the Lower Level IV Operating Rooms at Hadassah Hospital. And I have always said, if you can’t live in Israel, it is our responsibility to support the country. There hasn’t been a generation since Israel was established that hasn’t found a way to ensure our homeland is strong. What exciting initiatives are underway at the Toronto Centre? Well, we just had a great executive meeting last night, so things are fresh in my mind. First off, we’ve revamped a few aspects of The Reporter, which I’m very excited about. Secondly, our hope for this year’s Annual Campaign is to reach everyone in CHW Toronto Centre, whether you’ve given before or not. Also, we are working hard to expand our monthly giving program; we really believe it’s the future of giving in our organization. It’s easy, you don’t have to think
about it once you sign on, and the organization can plan for the future. And finally, we’re currently doing research to find some new flagship fundraisers for CHW Toronto Centre that will appeal to our entire membership as well as the outside community. What is surprising about CHW Toronto? I think people would be surprised to find out that we have over 20 active Chapters, and over 2,000 members in the city. In this day and age when membership is not so easy to come by, we get calls weekly, from people asking to be introduced to a Chapter they can join. I absolutely adore the women this organization attracts. I have met stellar professionals and women who are dedicated to the work that we do; women who are leaders by nature and by study. For a lot of women, this is their passion and it’s how they want to spend their time, and it is just so inspiring to be around.

LEGACY CHW LEGACY CIRCLE:
Lynn Gillman
AN EASY DECISION I’m a planner. I love to plan everything in detail, whether it is a long-awaited vacation or a meeting with one of my clients. A will is simply a different type of plan. Everyone should review their will with their lawyer regularly, as their lives and situations change. I have always wanted to make meaningful contributions to charitable organizations. As I reviewed my will recently, I could not think of anything more meaningful than a bequest to CHW. I instructed my lawyer to add CHW to my list of beneficiaries and voila! Joining the CHW Legacy Circle was the easiest decision I have ever made and it also turned out to be the easiest donation I have ever made. I then contacted the CHW National Office to inform them of my intentions. And just like that, I am now part of CHW’s Legacy Circle. It makes me feel even more connected to CHW and its mission. I want to ensure that the organization that I have worked for and supported during much of my life continues to receive financial support from me afterwards. Joining CHW’s Legacy Circle was also a wonderful way to give a philanthropy lesson to my family and friends, and to remind them of how important our organization is to me and to Israel, Canada, and the world. 54

IN MEMORIAM Lily Frankz’l
We at Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) are deeply saddened by the loss of Lily Frankz’l, former National Executive Vice-President of CHW. In 1965, Lily was invited to serve as Director of Field Work by the Council of Montreal Hadassah-WIZO. During her term, Lily successfully created 13 new CHW chapters in Montreal. In light of her considerable accomplishments and effective leadership skills, she was appointed to the position of National Executive Vice-President in 1978 by the National Officers and Executive. In 1985, Lily was one of the 10 distinguished women honoured by the State of Israel Bonds in Montreal. Lily was asked to run as the Progressive Conservative candidate for the riding of Mount Royal during the 1988 Federal election. In 1989, she was invited by Yitzhak Shamir, then Prime Minister of Israel, to serve as a member of the Steering Committee of the Prime Minister’s Solidarity Conference, which was held in Jerusalem from March 19-23, 1989. In 2005, in recognition of her 40 years of outstanding, selfless work on behalf of CHW, Lily Frank was awarded the Rebecca Sieff Award, the highest honour awarded by CHW at the time, given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the welfare and well-being of the State of Israel. We are proud of all that Lily accomplished in her life, and of the spirit of generosity and caring that she shared with CHW and throughout Canada and Israel. May her memory be for a blessing.
