Canadian Hadassah-WIZO Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW ) is Canada’s leading Jewish women’s philanthropic organization. Founded in 1917, CHW is non-political, volunteer driven and funds a multitude of projects for Children, Healthcare, and Women in Israel and Canada.
CHW Projects: Helping Children, Improving Healthcare, Supporting Women
A B C • Providing a safe-haven during the day to a child of working parents. Children receive nutritious hot meals and snacks, ensuring they can focus on learning, playing and growing.
• Creating a secure space for children to hang out and have fun, while their parents are at work. Children enjoy recreational activities with their friends, as well as receive tutoring and a wholesome meal.
• Giving a student the opportunity to prepare for a bright future. CHW schools offer each student a range of educational programs and services designed to meet their specific needs.
• Sending Canadian children to a Jewish summer camp. Open up a world of opportunity as they explore their Jewish roots, make friends, participate in outdoor activities, and discover their hidden talents.
• Providing a home away from home for a child at-risk. Children receive counselling in a stimulating, supportive environment. Help them to discover their own unique gifts and give them the support to flourish. • Helping children discover their Jewish identity. Children participate in Bar/ Bat Mitzvah classes, the March of the Living program, or school enrichment excursions and special activities.

• Helping to heal a patient who has experienced a stroke. Patients have immediate access to life-saving surgery and a chance for full recovery. • Providing our healthcare teams with the modern tools needed to perform today’s complex surgeries so that patients facing urgent care are never turned away.
• Supporting a single-mother who is concerned about her child. A specially trained volunteer will offer her a listening ear, support and direction, ensuring that both she and her child thrive.
• Supporting a woman who is struggling day-to-day to feed her children. She receives guidance and job skills training, empowering her and her family. • Helping families reach their full potential through social programs, recreational activities, and support groups so that they can lead productive, independent lives.

I remember the very first time I saw a copy of Orah Magazine. I was at my in-laws for dinner, and my mother-in-law had just received her copy. It’s amazing to think that it must have been thirtyfive years ago and yet I recall, so clearly, that at the time I thought it was a very professional looking publication, filled with such great pictures and information that I had to sit down and read the issue from cover to cover. What is even more amazing is that I am now writing to you as the 22 nd National President of CHW. I wish my mother-in-law, Muriel Goldman z”l, was still alive to share in my pride at becoming President. I have chosen to call my Orah column “CHW TODAY: INSPIRATION, ENGAGEMENT, EMPOWERMENT” because it sums up why I am so committed to CHW. Engagement in our organization gives us the power to turn our inspiration into reality, both for ourselves and for our partners in Israel. Having settled into the daily routine of phone calls, emails, letters, speeches, conference calls and travel, I know what a busy and vibrant organization we are. Our members keep me on my toes with the steady stream of comments, suggestions and feedback and our staff works extremely hard to complete the mountains of work that must be accomplished to keep us running smoothly. We really are an amazing team! The focus for this issue of Orah magazine, is the 2015 Annual Campaign and I am very excited to introduce this year’s campaign slogan: BIG needs CARING hearts. And the tag line for our 2015 campaign: We put our money where our heart is.
For me, the theme for this campaign encompasses everything that we do as donors and volunteers for CHW. Each of us has our own personal story for why we support the precious work of CHW. Whether you are a Woman of Valour, a Woman/ Man of Distinction, a Sustainer, or simply choose to support us through a campaign gift, we are all making a statement about our strong belief in supporting the Jewish people by engaging in the work of CHW, and expressing what huge hearts we all have. There is so much to read about in this issue of Orah. I am especially thrilled to inform you about our new French Nal’aleh students who have begun studying at Hadassim this school year. Having completed our commitment to the Fertility Unit at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, we are now embarking on a new project to equip a cutting edge operating room in the new tower. There is also a very touching article about a wonderful program being offered at WIZO women’s centres in Israel. I hope you enjoy all of the fascinating articles and of course all of the schmoozy pages as well. In closing, I want to remind everyone that there is still time to sign up for our CHW Mission to Israel in April. The mission will be filled with fun, fabulous and meaningful experiences, and I can’t wait to celebrate all of our accomplishments with you as we spend ten days sharing the experience of hands-on CHW Israel. “Chase the vision, not the money; the money will end up following you.” – Tony Hsieh Change is the only constant in life, and we have experienced much change within Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) over the past three years. CHW’s 2011-2014 Administration had lofty goals: to further upgrade the CHW governance structure; enhance CHW consolidation; intensify growth; and finally, to advance membership and leadership development. And through the hard work and dedication of CHW’s National Directors, under the visionary leadership of Marla Dan, Immediate Past National President, we have seen these goals achieved. Last administration brought CHW to the forefront of women’s philanthropic organizations in the 21st century. This was attained by consolidating and streamlining operations from coast-tocoast, restructuring under the new Not-for-Profit Corporations Act and setting high corporate standards. From establishing new financial rules to consolidating tax receipts, CHW saw many accomplishments over the past few years. We are very proud that in the last two years, CHW has been awarded the Constant Contact All Star Award for our proficient use of electronic communication. Most notably, our Annual Campaign underwent a complete overhaul and, in turn, our projects benefited from a 21% increase in giving over three years. General Major Giving also increased by 97% from 2011-2014, significantly providing for Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel. Last year, CHW enabled rebuilding of the greenhouse at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village after a 2013 fire, which was funded through the Hadassim is Home Emergency Campaign. In
addition, an extensive renovation of Dormitory Tet was completed, one of four of CHW Hadassim’s dormitory buildings for boarding students. Further, CHW embarked on our latest commitment with Assaf Harofeh Medical Center: The CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute. CHW was able to meet these ambitious goals because of the devotion and hard work of all our members who inspire and share with each other and because of the loyalty and dedication of all our volunteers and friends who contribute to the vital work that CHW does in Israel and Canada. November 2014 marked the end of Marla’s administration, and we welcomed Claudia Goldman as CHW’s new National President. A long-time CHW member and community leader for 27 years, Claudia aims, over her two-year term, to concentrate on partnerships through three components: Israel, volunteers and donors. In January 2015, the newly-installed Board of Directors met in Montreal to set goals for the current administration. Central to all of the discussions held by the board was the focus on working closely with our partners in Israel and to continue to change the lives of our extended Israeli family for the better. There has always been a strong bond between Israel and the Diaspora. Together, we bear the responsibility for Jewish survival. Together, we bear the responsibility for our Jewish homeland. By investing in Israel, we ensure that our homeland is a secure, democratic, and thriving society. This is something that you, our members and friends, truly understand. D I R E C T O R G E NER A L B EN N Y D AV ID S O N , MD It is always a pleasure to write a few chosen words about the truly impressive work carried out by your organization, especially in my field of healthcare and medical centers. For this issue, I choose to talk about the new project that you have so magnanimously adopted, namely the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. Cerebrovascular accidents or strokes are among the most prominent and prevalent complications of atherosclerosis and have been, until not too many years ago, a cause of death and disability, with almost no effective treatment once the
event has occurred. The new technology of catheterization and stenting that made such a tremendous difference in the outcome of coronary disease and myocardial infarction is now used with even greater success in preventing the catastrophic outcome of strokes. Using this technique, we are now able to prevent paralysis, loss of cognitive skills and, of course, death of patients who are treated inside the established window of opportunity, and one can even argue that those results surpass, and are even more of a triumph for the medical profession in its war on atherosclerosis, than the unquestionable excellent results of its use in heart disease. Now, with your help, we will be able to help these many patients. Thank you!

N AT I O N A L E X EC U TIV E D IR EC TO R R IS A EP S TEIN In the early 80’s, I was asked for the first time to speak at the National Convention of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW ). As a young woman of 18, I asked my mother and friend Helen Glazer to join me. As I stood on the podium in front of hundreds of women, I was scared and a little bit intimidated. I recognized then, the commitment CHW members had to the State of Israel and to the Jewish people, and I was honoured to be speaking to this formidable group. Many years have past since that day, and now my youngest daughter will be participating in the Biluim Israel program, and she will have the opportunity to visit a CHW daycare centre.
It is important to me that not only she, but all of the chanichim (campers) on the program, see what CHW has accomplished in Israel. While playing with the children they will begin to understand the importance of the connection between Canada and Israel. They will understand how their fundraising efforts directly impact the daycare, by offering the WIZ Kids program to children who might not have computers in their own homes. The relationship between CYJ and CHW ensures that future generations of Canadian Jews will be engaged and supportive of both Israel and our community.

Hadassah International Units have joined in this effort to raise the much needed funds to guarantee that all who seek medical attention can benefit from our extraordinary patient care and cutting-edge research. CHW has been steadfast in its support of HMO and has brought innovation through critically needed funds to our hospitals at Ein Kerem and Mount Scopus.
You have a proud record of achievement in meeting the goals you have assumed for the Blood Bank, the Stroke Center, the Center for Emergency Medicine, the Pediatric Center for Chronic Diseases and the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower, to just name a few. Your recent project, the CHW Fertility Unit, will bring so much happiness to those who come to our doors to solve their personal quest for parenthood. Since 1989, Hadassah has been the leader in developing new protocols for IVF and different assisted procedures that have brought hope and success to those who could not otherwise fulfill their dreams to have a child. I know you will continue to succeed in achieving your goals. Thank you for faithfully demonstrating your support for our great cause.

P R E S I D E N T T O VA B EN - D O V Established in 1920 to address the urgent necessities of the women and children in Palestine Eretz Israel, WIZO created social, welfare and educational services and institutions that later became the foundation for the infrastructure of the Israeli society, as we know it today. But what impact do we have on our service recipients or Israeli society? I will allow a WIZO graduate to answer. In February 2012, Member of Knesset, Shaul Mofaz (former IDF Chief of Staff and Minister of
Defense), a graduate of the WIZO Nahalal Youth Village ( joint WIZO/ CHW project), met with its 12 th graders. He told them that it was WIZO that shaped and forged his character, and it is where he acquired values of diligence and determination, to learn and progress. MK Mofaz stated “Above all else, I am proud to be part of the WIZO family and to have had the privilege to learn and be educated in a place that yields so many opportunities and helps its youth build their dreams.”

C H A I R P E R S O N P R O FES S O R R IV K A LA ZO V S K Y The 2 youth villages, 6 daycares, 3 WIZO centers, and 2 youth clubs that Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW ) sponsors tells the story of the history and birth of the State of Israel.
In a recent graduation ceremony at CHW Hadassim, I was approached by countless parents wishing to express their appreciation for CHW’s dedicated work; all sharing the same sentiments: “CHW does not just change lives, it saves lives.”
Since before the State of Israel was established, CHW had the pioneering spirit to support Nahalal, a school set up to prepare young girls for agricultural work. Today, just as in the preState days, Nahalal is the first home for new immigrants from the Former Soviet Union. Then, like today, CHW continues to provide these youth with opportunities that benefit their futures.
The projects sponsored by Canadian Hadassah WIZO foster the inner strength and the resilience, of the State of Israel, and the Jewish people, especially during trying times such as these, when we mourn the murder of three young boys, kidnapped on their way home from school. Together we will continue to create a better future for the State of Israel and the Jewish people.

On Saturday, November 15, 2014, Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) hosted a tribute gala honouring outgoing National President Marla Dan and in support of the new CHW Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Israel, which will now bear Marla’s name. As Marla’s National Presidency came to an end, CHW was proud to honour her at this fantastic event with over 200 in attendance.

After a cocktail reception where guests were served wine and appetizers as they schmoozed, Master of Ceremonies Judy Zelikovitz began the evening program. Debbie Eisenberg, National Gala Chair and Tali Baum, Toronto Gala Chair, warmly welcomed guests to the Gala, and were followed by special greetings brought by Israel’s Consul General to Toronto D.J. Schneeweiss, Sandy Martin, Honourary National President who brought greetings on behalf of Hadassah International, as well as Marla’s loving husband Aubrey Dan, who also generously sponsored the evening’s musical performance – a live band featuring classic Rock and Roll hits. Professor Rivka Lazovsky, Chairperson, World WIZO Executive, presented Marla with the Rebecca Sieff Award, the highest award of World WIZO. After a delicious dinner, guest speaker Dr. Benjamin Davidson, Director General of Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, informed guests of the incredible work that will be made possible at the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute thanks to the generous donations of CHW supporters. This was followed by a moving tribute to Marla made by National Executive Director Alina Ianson, to which Marla responded with her own poignant speech. Helping CHW to help Israel Throughout the summer of 2014, the support for CHW’s Emergency Campaign was tremendous. We are pleased to share with you that through the generosity of our members and friends, like you, $152,125 was raised over the course of the campaign, ensuring the safety and security of those in our care! We know that the situation this past summer impacted each of our projects, and thankfully, life returned to normal for those affected. From the beginning of the conflict, CHW was on the ground, continually
assessing the ongoing needs at our projects. And because of your commitment, CHW’s projects were able to go above and beyond to ensure the safety and support for those seeking help in times of need. For example, the CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village, as well as CHW Nahalal Youth Village, provided the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter for hundreds of children, women and families seeking refuge from the crisis. CHW supports state-of-the-art medicine and ground breaking research at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. CHW is pleased to announce our latest commitment at Hadassah Hospital, which is to furnish and equip a Lower Level Four operating room that will include state-of-the-art medical equipment, operating tables, lights and monitoring systems, and much more (see page 32 to learn more). As well, CHW is dedicated to healthcare through the support of the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in central Israel. The medical centre is the third largest government hospital in Israel, caring for over 500,000 patients annually. Beginning in January 2014, CHW began a $1 million commitment over 4 years to offer immediate access to neurovascular surgery and after-

Why I Became A Sustainer

I became a member of Canadian Hadassah WIZO (CHW) about 21 years ago, when I was home full-time with my three (then) young children and looking for a social outlet in my Jewish community. In fact, I don’ t think I actually really knew what CHW was all about for my first few years! However, I have learned a lot since then and over the past several years, I have been involved in the organization at a number of levels. Currently, I am President of CHW London. Over the years, I have come to truly appreciate the incredible work that the organization does. CHW ’s focus on women, children and healthcare is something
I wholeheartedly support, and these issues also personally resonate for me since I work in pediatric healthcare. Last year, I was fortunate enough to travel to Israel on a CHW trip and saw for myself the impact of our fundraising efforts. The many daycares, schools, women’ s shelters, healthcare and research programs in Israel, which we support, provide fundamental value to those in need and ultimately benefit everyone. Becoming a Sustainer allows me to provide ongoing, stable support for these worthy projects. CHW has been instrumental in helping Israeli society grow and prosper and I am happy to be able to play a small part in that process.

CHW GIVES CARE T H E F R E N C H N A’A L E H P R O G R A M On March 19, 2012, a gunman opened fire at the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school in the city of Toulouse, France. A teacher and three students were killed, with a teenage boy was seriously injured. Several days earlier another shooting had taken place in the surrounding area, targeting French soldiers and Jewish civilians. Seven people died and five others were injured. Léa, a young teen, was walking down a nearby street and heard the shots fired. For a long while thereafter, Léa would jump at the slightest sound. She recalls being scared and feeling unsafe. Each time she would leave the house to go to school, her mother would worry. Fearing for Léa’s safety, her mother knew that she had to take steps to protect her daughter, but there was difficulty in finding a solution in the community. After several years of seeking help, she learned about the new French Na’aleh Program being offered in Israel. She knew this was the best way to provide her daughter with a safe environment. CHW remains steadfast in its

commitment to ensure that children in desperate need receive excellent and essential care. Through your generosity, CHW is proud to support the newly established French Na’aleh Program at the CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. The French Na’aleh Program receives Francophone youth from countries such as France, Switzerland and Morocco. The children, who enter the program at the age of 14, are provided with a secure environment in which to study so that they can plan for a brighter future. In the fall of 2014, CHW Hadassim welcomed twenty-five students seeking refuge (pictured above). A parent’s decision to send their child to Israel can be explained in one word: security. With the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, many parents feel that although it is a difficult choice, sending their child is a necessary means of survival. In order to accommodate the students at CHW Hadassim, several new classrooms were built through the generosity of CHW’s donors like you. These classrooms allow for the immersion of additional students in years to come,
ensuring that no child is turned away. Ze’ev Twito, Director of CHW Hadassim, shared that the school saw an influx in requests for the French Na’aleh program after the events of last summer and the increase in global tension being experienced at this time. Next year, CHW Hadassim is planning to accept twenty additional students. Over the past few months, the students have been learning about more than academics. From studying Hebrew to exploring Israel through field trips, and learning about their Jewish heritage, the students have immersed themselves in the life and culture of their new home. Already, many of the students have shared that because of the safety and ease with which they can have normal lives, they intend to stay in Israel with their parents who are planning Aliyah in the near future. Eli, a student, says “Since being at CHW Hadassim, I no longer have to hide my Jewish heritage. In Paris, I could not go out in public with my Star of David necklace on. Here, I wear it proudly and with confidence.” Your support gives care to Children like Léa and Eli.

CHW WOMAN OF VALOUR: Claudia Goldman
“Whatever I give to CHW, I always get back tenfold. It’s an uneven relationship in that I get back so much more than what I give.” Claudia Goldman has been a member of CHW since 1987. For nearly thirty years, her commitment to CHW’s mission and projects has proven that Claudia is a true woman of valour, especially in her new role as CHW National President. The women and children at CHW’s projects mean a lot to Claudia, and making a Woman of Valour gift is her way of showing how deeply she cares for them, by ensuring that they are assisted with whatever needs they have. “It’s quite personal for me,” says Claudia. “I can see very specific faces of people I’ve gotten to know from my visits. By committing to a Woman PAGE 30 - ORAH MAGAZINE
of Valour gift, I have clarified that relationship and I have deepened my connection to our projects.”
she would pass CHW Hadassim. She would always make a point of looking in to see what the students were up to.
While Claudia holds each of CHW’s projects close to her heart, the project that is most special to her is CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village. Not only did her daughter Naomi spend time there as a volunteer, but it is located in the municipality of Even Yehuda, where close family friends lived for many years. All six of the family’s children attended the school.
Claudia has very strong beliefs about supporting causes that provide for women, children and families in Israel. In particular, she feels that by assisting their social needs, we are helping to strengthen the fabric of Israeli society. “I see women and children as our partners, especially at a time like this when there are so many problems in the Jewish world,” says Claudia. “It’s about social action making positive change, and it works both ways. By strengthening children we are developing

our future leaders. By helping women, we empower them and make their families stronger. In turn, they will be able to mend, move on, and be able to build a stronger Jewish homeland.” Assisting CHW’s partners in Israel is what influenced Claudia to become a Woman of Valour. “By helping our partners become strong, we build a deeper connection and partnership with Israel. It strengthens us, as well, because the way that Jewish people live in Israel is to be admired. They are breathing the air of the Jewish homeland. There’s a different sense of being Jewish there, and I think it’s something that we can strive for, living in the Diaspora.” During her most recent visit to Israel in January, in her capacity as National President, Claudia saw first-hand the pressing needs of women and children. Right now, there is an urgent need to support those living in areas of increased anti-Semitism and provide them with a safe haven. CHW’s projects have and will continue to be involved in the process of absorbing Jewish people who need to come to the Jewish homeland. “Specifically, I’m thinking about the French Na’aleh Program at CHW Hadassim,” says Claudia. “We are helping in every way we can to ensure that their transition is a comfortable one, that they are well cared for, and that they have a warm and nurturing environment in which to study and live. It is very hard for the
children to leave their parents and homes behind”. Claudia met with the children in the French Na’aleh Program, and describes them as vulnerable teenagers who are going through a very difficult adaption period. As they have been separated from their families, many of these teenagers are experiencing home sickness. “The antiSemitism in Europe is leading to immigration, and these people need a refuge, which is what CHW Hadassim provides,” says Claudia. The French Na’aleh Program students that Claudia met with made a point of thanking CHW for helping them, and for making their lives that much easier. And these children are not alone. CHW Hadassim supports children at-risk, many of whom have been placed there by court order. All of the children who live in the dormitories share a similar experience: having to start their lives over again. As a donor, Claudia has received so much from CHW, including pride, self-affirmation, and the satisfaction in knowing that her gift has a profound impact on the recipients. To Claudia, giving to CHW is a two-way street. “Whatever I give to CHW, I always get back tenfold. It’s an uneven relationship in that I get back so much more than what I give,” she says. Through CHW, Claudia has made deep friendships, not only with Canadian women but with people from all over the world.
And being a Woman of Valour makes this connection so much deeper. Claudia shares a story about the pin the donor receives when she becomes a Woman of Valour. “It’s a work of art, and women wear it with pride. I remember one instance of a woman wearing her pin while on vacation in Florida. Another woman staying at the same hotel approached her, also wearing her pin. It opened up a conversation and they became good friends.” Claudia sees the Woman of Valour pin as a passkey to being a part of a wonderful group of women who find each other no matter where they are in the world. “I love that story,” she says. “That people love their pin so much, they wear it everywhere, and that it brings people together. Ultimately, CHW brings people together.” To fellow CHW members who are considering becoming a Woman of Valour through their Annual Campaign gift this year, Claudia says, “You are putting your trust in our stewardship of your gift. I am so thankful that you get what we’re doing and believe in helping the people at our projects. I think that, especially if you are able to come to Israel and see for yourself what your gift has done, the difference it has made, you will understand more profoundly how much your gift means and that it really does make a huge difference and improve the lives of women, children and families at our projects in Israel. “

HEALTHCARE: CHW GIVES HOPE
H A DA S S A H H O S P I TA L On the morning of November 18, 2014, Eitan Muelme, a husband and father of nine children, was severely injured when terrorists carried out a massacre during Morning Prayer at a synagogue in Har Nof, Jerusalem. Eitan was immediately brought to Hadassah Hospital. In December, Dr. Ben Carson, a visiting neurosurgeon from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, was shown a CT scan of the head trauma Eitan sustained from the attack. Intrigued, Dr. Carson visited Eitan because he was amazed by his level of recovery, and said that he “couldn’t have predicted that a patient would be in such good condition following such an injury.� Dr. Carson credits Hadassah Hospital for the care that Eitan received. Inside the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at Hadassah Hospital, operating rooms are located underground in an area protected from conventional, biological, and chemical weapons. In the face of war or terror, these underground operating rooms ensure that lives can be saved

without interruption, resulting in the best outcome for patients facing urgent care. Currently, many of the operating rooms remain unequipped and unfurnished. Once complete, these state-of-the-art facilities will provide surgeons with the tools needed to perform complex trauma surgery, oncology procedures, organ transplants, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. Fortunately for Eitan, a completed operating room was available, thus saving his life. CHW strives to improve healthcare, working from a position that integrates compassion and care into the healing process, offering hope to patients and their families. At its core, Hadassah Hospital ensures that patients receive quality healthcare in the hands of trusted medical practitioners. Recently, Hadassah Hospital expressed an urgent need to completely furnish all remaining operating rooms. This is especially true in light of the unrest
witnessed in Israel this past summer. Although the threat has diminished for the time being, the need for efficient and ultramodern operating rooms still exists. Because of this, CHW is stepping up to ensure that Hadassah Hospital is able to treat patients such as Eitan, no matter the circumstances. CHW has always been forthcoming about fulfilling the most pressing needs in order to provide for those facing devastating disease or requiring immediate access to lifesaving care. As such, CHW is pleased to announce our latest commitment: to furnish and equip a Lower Level Four operating room, which includes state-of-theart medical equipment, operating tables, lights and monitoring systems, and much more. Eitan was recently declared fit enough to begin rehabilitation, and while the road ahead is still long, his path to recovery is bright. Your support gives hope to patients like Eitan.

“Jeff and I feel that it is our responsibility to give back and to teach our children that this is a part of our Jewish values and culture.” In April 2013, Tali and Jeff Baum made a Woman/Man of Distinction gift to the CHW Netanya Technological High School. After visiting the school, Tali and Jeff wanted to do more to help the teens who attend the school. While Tali and Jeff have always preferred to keep their philanthropic activities private, they felt that now is the time to highlight the importance of supporting CHW’s projects for Children, Healthcare and Women. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Tali first experienced Israel when her family moved there for a year while her father pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She

returned to Israel at seventeen, with a Jewish youth group and thoroughly enjoyed touring the country; working on Kibbutz Sde Boker and experiencing Gadna, a taste of army life for non-Israeli students. Tali moved to Toronto and enrolled as a science student at the University of Toronto. She returned to Israel to work at an International Genetics Lab. In her final year at the University of Toronto, Tali met her husband Jeff, a recent business graduate and budding entrepreneur. In the spring of 1989, she completed her Masters of Business Administration at the
University of Western Ontario, the couple wed, and today have three children. Both Tali and Jeff were raised in strong Zionist homes, and come from a long line of CHW members. Tali’s grandmothers were active in CHW, and signed up all their granddaughters and great-granddaughters as life members, Tali included. Tali’s paternal grandmother, Ella Fleischmannz’l, began the Leah Chapter in Toronto over 50 years ago, naming it after her mother, who perished during the Holocaust. Tali’s maternal grandmother, Beatrice Ogdenz’l, was an active member in the
Annie Wolfson Chapter. “Every time we visited them in Toronto, they were always preparing for a CHW event or going to the Bazaar,” says Tali. “They always had great stories to tell!” Both Tali’s parent’s and her in-laws, Claire and Seymour Baum, have supported CHW for many years, and Tali herself is involved on various levels, including Toronto’s Tamid Chapter, various committees, the Toronto Executive, as well as the National Leaders Forum. Israel has been home to many of Tali’s family members, many of whom arrived after the Holocaust and were pioneers in helping build the State. “Israel is our homeland and our safe haven; the rise of anti-Semitism around the world and the recent events in France reinforces how important it is to the Jewish people and the Diaspora,” says Tali. “It is our responsibility to support the people of Israel and maintain a strong Jewish infrastructure for the State. Canadian Jews and CHW members understand this need.” The Baum’s have visited Israel as a family twice in the past five years. On their first trip, they visited CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village.”Meeting the kids who live in the dormitories at CHW Hadassim and their house mothers who care so deeply for them, compelled Jeff and I to make our first Major Gift to CHW,” says Tali. On their subsequent trip, the family visited the new
Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower at Hadassah Hospital, where they were impressed by the new facilities and the beautiful healing gardens. “The Tower is home to the CHW Fertility Unit, which gives hope to thousands of women.” “Giving to Israel has been a tradition in both of our families over many generations”, says Tali. This is something they have worked very hard to encourage in their children. They have taught their children the concept of Tzedakah: helping others, giving back, and ultimately making the world a better place. “I have had the good fortune to see those before me make Major Gifts to CHW,” says Tali. “We need to carry that forward and make sure that we can provide for others through our donations”. This said, meeting the parents of a group of children from CHW Netanya who participated in the March of the Living Program encouraged Tali and Jeff to support this project. “When I attended the 2012 Mission to Israel with CHW, we met with the participants of the March of the Living and their families. They all spoke about the impact the experience had on them, and thanked us for making this trip possible,” says Tali. As Major Donors, Tali and Jeff have received so much from CHW. “It is a wonderful feeling, knowing that we have done something worthwhile that will
benefit people immediately and in the future,” says Tali. They are confident that their donations go to the right projects, and have positive and lasting effects on the lives of recipients. “We receive personal updates from CHW on the impact that our gifts have made, with inspiring stories that let us know exactly how our donation has helped”, says Tali. The contributions that Tali and Jeff have made are especially vital during times of stress, such as during Operation Protective Edge last summer. “CHW Youth Villages received thousands of refugees who were in the direct line of rocket fire. The same is true for all six of our daycare centres. Yet only four of these daycares have bomb shelters, and we must continue to raise funds to protect the children and their caregivers,” says Tali. Tali and Jeff encourage prospective donors to experience the sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that their contributions can have a major impact on the lives of children, women and their families in Israel. “If your grandmother or mother or aunt were Major Donors, why not keep that tradition alive and plan a Major Gift, as well?” asks Tali. “There are many people in Israel who need help,” says Tali. “Anyone who has seen the many CHW projects in Israel would want to give. You feel compelled when you see how your gift can impact a person’s life.”

Gili grew up in an impoverished neighbourhood in Southern Israel, where she faced daily abuse at the hands of her father. Desperate, she dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen and left home. Alone and without the loving support of a family, Gili was heading down a dangerous path. By the age of twenty three, she was a single mother of two, struggling to provide for her children and keep a roof over their heads. Desperate to keep her girls living with her, Gili knew that she would need to make a major change in her life. When visiting a CHW women’s centre, Gili saw a flyer about the Unlimited Potential (UP) Program, which provides jobs skills training to unemployed and inexperienced women, empowering them “up” and out of poverty. She enrolled in the program, and for the first time in her life felt hope. She soon began learning skills that would enable her to find a job.

“I was so nervous the first day of the program,” says Gili. “I had never used a computer before, and I was embarrassed. But I knew that this was a second chance at life.” As the largest Jewish women’s philanthropic organization in Canada, CHW has always advocated for women, working to empower all aspects of women’s lives. And the UP Program is just one way this is achieved. Of those living below the poverty line in Israel, 68% are women. The UP Program, founded in 2006, has trained over 5,000 women since that time, integrating them into the workforce. UP is unique as it not only provides women with vocational and technological training, but also assists in job placement once training is complete. This full-circle program enables social and economic opportunities that these women would otherwise not have access to.
When participating in UP, women also engage in personal empowerment workshops, as well as sessions to help them cope with the challenges of being a working mother. This is especially important, as UP caters to women who are struggling as single mothers, have escaped domestic violence, and are in desperate socio-economic conditions, providing them a chance to improve their lives. After Gili completed training, her mentor in the program helped her find a suitable job. Gili’s new career, along with a consistent salary, enables her to send her children to daycare, rent a spacious apartment, and ensure that there is food on the table each day. “I use to not sleep, worrying about how I would feed my children,” says Gili. “But I no longer have this concern, as I can provide for my family. UP allowed me to hold on to my girls.” With your support, CHW gives worth to women like Gili.

CHW LEGACY CIRCLE: Marion Mayman
Commitment to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) has been a driving force in Marion Mayman’s life. A member for over 30 years, she has personally pledged to make a lasting impact on projects devoted to Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Marion fell in love with Israel when she and her husband Shlomo lived on a moshav shitufi (partnership settlement). They returned to North America five years later, spending two years in Boston while Shlomo studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From that point on, Marion and Shlomo lived all over Canada, from the small town of Pinawa, Manitoba, to the larger political centre of Ottawa, finally settling in Toronto. A mother of three and grandmother of five, Marion remains very involved in the Jewish community. Marion was introduced to CHW in her youth while living in Sydney, where her mother was a dedicated member. “In small communities, all Jewish women were a part of CHW,” PAGE 40 - ORAH MAGAZINE
says Marion. “I am proud to say that even today - with about only 15 Jewish women living there - the Chapter continues to be engaged.” When Marion was seventeen, she was very involved in Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ), acting as President for the Maritime Region. At the time, CYJ provided a leadership training program in Israel where fifteen youth from across Canada were invited to attend. Marion was one of the few selected to participate in this program. In turn, the Queen Esther Chapter of CHW Sydney held a luncheon to honour Marion. “The Queen Esther Chapter was very helpful, and made sure I was ready for my upcoming trip,” says Marion. Several years later, when Marion and her family moved to Ottawa, she became involved with CHW. Edith Kizell z’l, who was then CHW Ottawa President, recruited Marion as the Convention Chair. Over the years, Marion took on various roles within the organization, from sitting on numerous committees and boards to serving as a National
Officer for nearly twelve years. A Past President of CHW Ottawa, Marion was National VicePresident before being elected National President from 19992002. “I have been immersed in CHW for a long time,” says Marion. “The organization has always been important to me, and I knew from a young age what the role of CHW is and the critical work that we do, so it was natural for me to get involved.” When Legacy Circle was first introduced, Marla Dan, who was National President at the time, spoke about the program at a meeting in Toronto. According to Marion, “Marla made a strong case for the Legacy Circle program, informing us that bequests enable CHW to continue to enrich lives and build better tomorrows for those who depend on the organization’s support.” Many of those in attendance at the meeting were inspired, Marion included, and joined the Legacy Circle soon thereafter. While she has supported so many of CHW’s projects devoted to Children, Healthcare and
“The Legacy Circle is a meaningful way that we can contribute to the work that CHW does, and I encourage everyone to leave their own lasting legacy.” Women over the years, Marion knew that she could never turn her back on CHW, even after she’s gone. While there are several ways to bestow a legacy gift, Marion decided to endow a bequest to CHW through her will. She says, “The Legacy Circle is truly an opportunity for me to make an even greater impact. CHW has been an integral part of my life for so many years, that it’s hard to just forget about my involvement and walk away. The Legacy Circle provides an opportunity for me to be remembered and for my family and friends to know just how meaningful CHW is to me”. For others who are thinking of leaving a bequest, Marion’s advice is simple: “What doesn’t matter is how much you leave, what is essential is to leave something. This was always my theory as National President: to give what you can afford. The work that CHW does is impactful, and needs to continue for many more years,” she says. “The Legacy Circle is a meaningful way that we can contribute to the work that CHW does, and I encourage everyone to leave their own lasting legacy!” Winter 2015 - PAGE 41

Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary
For over 12 years, CHW Calgary has held a toy drive prior to Chanukah. The toys are given to Jewish Family Services and Alberta Children’s Hospital Oncology Unit for distribution to families who cannot afford any extras. CHW Calgary is proud that the 2014 Toy Drive provided gifts for all of the 175 JFS identified recipients and was able to fill the ACH Oncology Unit wish list. CHW Calgary is proud of this mitzvah project that supports their local community and reflects CHW’s values in investing in Children, Healthcare, and Women.
Since 2009, CHW Edmonton has proudly offered the Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary to fulltime students enrolled in the Early Learning and Child Care program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. This bursary, which provides $1,000 annually to a second-year student in good academic standing who demonstrates financial need, was established to celebrate the life of Terry Horwitz z’l (pictured above) honouring her work with children in their early learning years. Terry graduated from this program in 2004.

Award in Women and Gender Studies CHW Edmonton offers two annual awards to students from the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Alberta. The bursaries, valued at $500 each, are awarded to undergraduate students on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Offered through Carleton University, recipients receive much-needed financial assistance and are awarded for their academic achievement. The 2013-14 recipient of the Maureen O’Neil Award in Women’s Studies is Deborah Conners, currently obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy; Sociology.
CHW Toronto has been an active community partner with the Foundation at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, contributing to the funding of a Neonatal Intensive Care Patient Room and currently, the CHW Exam Room in the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre. The Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre and its breast cancer experts ease patient anxiety by providing diagnosis and detailed treatment plans in just 24 hours. CHW Toronto is proud to partner with Sunnybrook on these meaningful projects that reflect CHW values and reminds us of the importance of supporting our local communities – as we do in our home away from home in Israel.
CHW Montreal Leave Out Violence (LOVE) Since 2008, CHW Montreal has supported LOVE with part of the proceeds of the Pro-Am For Kids golf tournament. LOVE volunteers help out at the tournament alongside dedicated CHW volunteers. LOVE is a not-for-profit, grass roots youth violence prevention organization that educates and empowers youth, ages 13 to 18. Since 1994, LOVE has expanded to cities all over the world, including Toronto, New York, and Eilat, Israel. Twinkle Rudberg, the founder of LOVE, recently spoke at a CHW Montreal event, and shared her appreciation of CHW’s support, which enables LOVE to continue helping youth to become leaders in violence-prevention through creative, educational programs. MADA Shabbat to Share Program In November 2014, CHW Montreal members and friends offered their time and volunteered with MADA’s Shabbat to Share Program. This program aims to help those in need by providing the basic necessities of life while preserving their dignity and empowering them to become self-sufficient members of the community. CHW volunteers packaged 450 Shabbat meals and delivered them all over the city. Plans are in the works for another volunteer day in the spring.
CHW Vancouver Louis Brier Foundation, Jewish Family Services Agency, and the Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital CHW Vancouver has proudly partnered with various local organizations over the years. More recently, CHW Vancouver hosted a “Jersey Boys” fundraiser in partnership with the Louis Brier Foundation and welcomed the opportunity to extend their reach and enlarge their network through this affiliation. On a smaller scale, CHW Vancouver continues to provide new cosmetic items (generously donated by CHW members) to women at the Jewish Family Services Agency in Vancouver. Since 2001, CHW Vancouver has partnered with the Prostate Centre at the Vancouver General Hospital, with part of the proceeds from the Pro-Am Golf Tournament being provided to the Centre. This support provides innovative treatment and exceptional patient care through updated equipment, improved facilities, and new initiatives. IN CONVERSATION CHW MONTREAL PRESIDENT MARLA GOODWIN ZIPPER A CHW Life Member, Marla Goodwin Zipper joined Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) Montreal’s Shoshanim Chapter in 1992. At first, she volunteered at various CHW Montreal events and fundraisers, and as the years progressed, Marla took on various roles within the organization. From participating in World WIZO’s Aviv Conference to serving on the National Advisory Board, Marla became CHW Montreal President in 2013. What do you find most challenging about being CHW Montreal President?
Taking on the Presidency has been a pleasure and a privilege. We have an excellent professional team and lay leadership. One unique challenge that we face is demographic. As a result of political realities, many families saw their children, my peer group and younger, leave Montreal. This created a void for succession. Because of this, we are focused on expanding our membership base and have added programming that appeals to a younger demographic. In February 2014, we launched New Connections, and the response has been encouraging. What are you focusing on for your term?
I have two goals, which go hand in hand; increasing membership and increasing fundraising dollars. With fundraising, we have been making a concerted effort to grow the Sustainers Program. The key is raising awareness about the important work at each of our projects and connecting our donors personally with the incredible impact that their gift has. What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved with their local Centre?
CHW is a great choice. Like any volunteer opportunity, you get so much more from the experience than what you give. Aside from knowing that you’re raising money for an important cause, you meet with and learn from an inter-generational group of dedicated women who, like you, are looking to make a difference. With the recent tragic events in France, there is a need for people to align themselves with Jewish causes and to stand proudly and loudly beside our brothers and sisters in Israel and proclaim our support. CHW, as a non-political not-for-profit organization, offers an ideal means for people to achieve this goal. What exciting initiatives are underway at CHW Montreal?
One of the unique features of CHW is that volunteers have an impact not only in Israel, but also at a grassroots level. CHW Montreal has partnered with local organizations to make a difference closer to home. For example, we volunteered at Le Café, serving meals to over 200 people in Montreal’s only kosher soup kitchen. We have also prepared, packed and delivered Shabbat to Share meals with MADA, and worked with LOVE (Leave Out Violence) at our annual Pro-Am for Kids Golf Tournament. Through New Connections, we’ve had pilates classes, boot camp, as well as cooking classes, and plans are in the works for a “Pamper Yourself” spa night in May, in time for Mother’s Day! Also, we are expanding our “Walk in the Park”, a very successful e-fundraising event, which began three
years ago as a Chapter initiative and will now be Centre-wide. So we have a lot of exciting initiatives underway! Also, we will be moving our office space in May to Decarie Square. What would someone be surprised to know about CHW Montreal?
CHW Montreal is a vibrant Centre with a variety of activities appealing to all ages. CHW’s membership tag line expresses this perfectly: “There’s more than one way to get engaged!” Our model has evolved to recognize that women today are juggling careers and family in addition to volunteering. You don’t have to join a Chapter and go to monthly meetings to be part of CHW. You can choose your level of involvement based on your availability. I would encourage anyone looking for a meaningful way to get involved, meet interesting and dynamic people and make a difference, to get in touch with us! What are you doing to ensure you continue to develop as a leader?
My professional and CHW careers have developed side by side over the past 20 years, and the skills that I acquired in each arena complemented the other. As President of CFO Consulting, a financial consulting practice, I have developed many leadership, organizational and communication skills that I was able to apply at CHW through my role as a member of the Montreal Executive and most recently as President. Assuming the Presidency of CHW Montreal opened me up to a new level of growth, both personally and professionally. To share knowledge and develop leadership skills, with women coast to coast, has been a wonderful opportunity.
MENTOR Q&A CHW TORONTO MENTOR BRONDELL SHAPIRO How did you become involved with CHW?
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) has been an integral part of my life for the past 60 years. I knew a bit about CHW, as my mother had been a member of Hadassah in Detroit, and from my involvement with Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ) as a teen. However, I joined the organization as a new bride, when I was invited to a Chapter meeting by a friend. I have found it easy being involved. This is especially true after witnessing first-hand the impact that we make at our projects when I participated in the 2012 Mission to Israel with Immediate Past National President Marla Dan. I was impressed with the Netanya Technological High School, where we spent time baking and interacting with the students. Having experiences like these is amazing. What motivated you to become a Mentor?
Several years ago, Beverly Kahn invited me to become a member of the Leadership Development Committee, as she was the Chair at the time. The goal of this committee was to discuss how to implement the new Mentorship Program in Toronto. It’s important for CHW members who have leadership experience to give back. As a mentor, I’m assisting someone in developing their abilities. What does empowering others mean to you?
Empowering others means helping people achieve their full potential, in this case in terms of their leadership capabilities. In CHW’s National Mentorship Program, this is done by increasing Mentees resources. My goal is to share my knowledge and skills and encourage them to try things they have never done before.
What is your role as a Mentor?

Why Israel Still Needs Your Help

She’s all of 66 and Israel has not only developed a vibrant democracy, earned a reputation for cuttingedge innovation across a wide range of disciplines – from science and technology to agriculture, medicine, education and more. She’s done so while surviving repeated threats to her very existence. Did you know that Israel has more startups than any other country in the world, except the US? She’s also ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds, right behind the US. And not surprisingly, Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees per capita in the world. As Diaspora Jews, we take pride in these achievements! We see Israel as a success story of epic proportions. How many other nations have the drive and determination Israelis have? So do Israelis still need our help? The truth is that many of us would find it difficult to believe that in spite of all her successes, Israel has the highest rate of poverty in the Western world. In fact, 20.9% of Israelis live below the poverty line. That’s nearly twice the OECD* average of 11.3%. And 9.3% of people in Israel reported that they could not afford to buy enough food. Imagine how hard it must be to manage on an annual household disposable income of just $3,600. That’s reality for the bottom 10% of Israeli families. And life isn’t much easier for the middle class either. Did you know that Israel has one of the highest levels
of income inequality in the world? Goes a long way towards explaining why the 2011 protest movement drew 400,000 people to the streets protesting against the lack of affordable housing and the high cost of living. So, if a majority of Israelis struggle to make ends meet, is it any wonder that a 2014 study noted that 24% of secular Israelis wanted to resettle abroad? Or that an estimated 15,000 young Israelis were recently drawn to Berlin in search of a better standard of living? Making matters worse, following last summer’s Operation Protective Edge, the government cut 2% of all ministry budgets to pay for costs associated with the war. The Welfare and Social Services ministry’s 2014 budget was cut by 62.6 million NIS. As a result, Israel continues to maintain a lower social spending rate of 15.8% of GDP compared to the OECD average of 21.9%. This is where your support of CHW takes on vital importance. Despite its successes, income inequality and social divisions in Israel could worsen unless Diaspora Jews step in where the Israeli government cannot. It is absolutely vital that we take action to improve conditions for the underprivileged Israelis. And thanks to your support, CHW does just that. Chocolate Nut Passover Cookies Ingredients 3 cups powdered sugar ¾ cup cocoa ½ teaspoon salt 4 large eggs, whites only (at room temperature) ¼ cup melted butter, cooled or oil 5 ounces dark baking chocolate, chopped or 1 cup dark chocolate chips ½ - 1 cup chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts or pecans) Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Yield: 24 cookies

Place parchment paper on a flat baking sheet. In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar, cocoa, salt, chocolate and nuts. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until fluffy, and gradually add the butter or oil. Slowly incorporate dry ingredients into egg mixture. Place tablespoon-sized drops of batter onto baking tray, an inch apart from each other. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to cooling rack. Tip: The dough is not meant to be firm. However, if the dough is too soft, add more chopped nuts until desired texture is reached.

As CHW National Treasurer, I am pleased to present the 2013-2014 CHW Annual Donor Report, which reflects the dedicated efforts of the CHW Budget and Finance Committee and the CHW senior management team. We are proud that CHW’s allocations in support of Children, Healthcare, and Women totalled $1,729,031 for the fiscal year. Further, this period included the completion of the organization’s 4-year commitment of $1,000,000 dollars to build the new CHW Fertility Unit at Hadassah Hospital. The administration remains focused on ensuring best practices within the Organization to continue good financial health. Thus, the cost of fundraising is reviewed regularly, and care is taken to ensure that the Organization remains below the threshold. With constant monitoring we can see that all fundraising respects this objective, and current management is diligent in applying these goals. In October 2013, CHW Ottawa launched the “Memories Project,” a historical look into the foundation that has made their Centre what it is today. The “Memories Project” has inspired this rubric in the CHW Insider, which kicks off the countdown to Canadian Hadassah-WIZO’s centennial in 2017.
was President of the Montreal Hadassah Council from 19311934 and subsequently National Vice-President. It wasn’t until 1947 that Rosa was elected third National President of CHW, and she felt privileged to have been National President at the time Israel was proclaimed a State.
This issue focuses on Rosa Singer z’l, CHW’s third National President. Born in Montreal, Rosa became an active member of the Montreal Jewish community after graduating from high school. A close friend worked as a social worker for the Baron de Hirsch Institute, and from her Rosa learned of the poor and destitute in Montreal. From this, Rosa became interested in the problems of the local Jewish community. Soon after, Rosa began teaching Sunday school and participated in many aspects of Jewish life within the city. She often attended lectures by great leaders of the time, including Schmarya Levin, Mossessohn, Jacob de Haas, and many others who came to Montreal from time to time. Rosa was first exposed to CHW, then known as Canadian Hadassah, in the early 1900s, when her brother and sister had an open house at their home where many intellectuals of the time gathered for discussion. It was there that Rosa first met Rosa Harris, who was Canadian Hadassah’s first National Secretary, and was present at the first Zionist Congress, called by Theodor Herzl in Basel in 1897. At the same time, the Young Men’s Zionist Literary Society was already functioning and they called together a group of young girls, Rosa included, asking them to form a Young Ladies Zionist and Literary Society. This was organized in 1915, and members undertook the placement of Jewish National Fund Blue Boxes in homes, as well as raised large sums through organizing dances and other social functions. The Young Ladies Zionist and Literary Society included members, like Rosa, who subsequently became leaders in Canadian Hadassah in their respective communities. When Canadian Hadassah was organized nationally, the group became a Hadassah Chapter, functioning until the early 2000s, under the name “Young Ladies Zionist Chapter of Hadassah”. Two of CHW’s National Presidents, Lottie Riven and Rosa Singer, came from this group. Rosa gained prominence at the regional and National levels of CHW. In the 1920s, she became National Secretary. She

CHW enjoyed relationships at a high level, which allowed Rosa to meet many prominent people. She recalled once travelling to Ottawa to meet Louis St. Laurent, then Prime Minister, with a group of Zionists, representing all parties and with Moshe Sharett of the Jewish Agency. On the same trip, the late Hon. Leon Crestohl, Q.C., M.P. introduced the group to the various Cabinet Ministers with whom they met. On May 14, 1948, when Israel was proclaimed a state by its first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, Rosa and the CHW Executive, along with a group of Zionists, were en route to Winnipeg to attend a National Executive Committee meeting of the Zionist Organization of Canada. David S. Tchertok, who at the time worked for the Jewish National Fund of Canada, had left the train at a sub-station and came back with a bulletin informing them that the State had been proclaimed. The jubilation and excitement were terrific! During Rosa’s administration, when the State of Israel was proclaimed, there were a number of ‘firsts’. Among other activities, CHW helped to finance and furnish the first Consulate of Israel in Canada, located on MacGregor Street in Montreal. As a matter of fact, the members were requested to gather some fine china and silverware. Once, when at the consulate, Rosa saw a silver tea service being used which her parents had contributed. It brought back fond memories. Avraham Harman came to Montreal as Israel’s first consul-general. Subsequently, CHW decided to triple its budget, commensurate with the greater needs of the new State. Within 18 months the objective was realized, and this pace has been maintained ever since. In 1950, Canadian Hadassah felt that it had achieved a state of maturity and decided to set up its own treasury; previous to that all its funds had been remitted through the Zionist Organization of Canada. The same year, Hadassah Samuel, Chair of the WIZO Executive, visited Montreal and brought to CHW’s attention WIZO’s urgent and immediate needs. The Executive came to the decision that Canadian Hadassah should obtain a loan from the Royal Bank of Canada, and after negotiating with the manager, they were given a loan of $250,000 without collateral. The Royal Bank showed its confidence in CHW’s potential and this loan was paid up within a very short time.
CHW’s Third National President CHW, active in projects on the Canadian scene, cooperated with the Consumers League and with other organizations. Rosa attended meetings at the Canadian National Exhibition with Kate Aitken, and spoke as a representative of CHW, making others aware of what Jewish women were doing for Israel and for Canada. The Materials for Israel Campaign was instituted at that time, and large quantities of new merchandise were obtained and sent on to Israel. In June 1951, Rosa was elected one of the delegates to the 23rd Zionist Congress to be held in Jerusalem and visited Israel for the first time. She then saw that which she had merely visualized and spoken of throughout the years she had travelled through Canada speaking to Chapters. She visited the country from Metulla in the north down to Be’er Sheba, visiting CHW’s Hadassim and Nahalal Youth Villages, as well as the many WIZO institutions, all of which brought a feeling of fulfillment. Under Rosa’s leadership, the women of CHW had not only made a marvellous contribution to Israel and overseas work, but worked as loyal Jewish Canadians in all phases of communal endeavours, including working with the Red Cross during the war years. With the vast experience obtained in CHW, Rosa and her peers were kept au courant with world events and in many cases brought out talents which were dormant, such as public speaking and writing. Having travelled throughout Canada from Halifax to Vancouver through the years, and having met with Jewish women in all communities, Rosa was in a position to see that in CHW there was a most devoted and dedicated group. The members were loyal citizens of Canada, communityminded and seeking to build a strong Jewry in the Diaspora alongside of a strong Jewry in Israel. In the summer of 1965, Rosa visited Israel for a second time and was thrilled by the achievements that had been brought about in 17 years of Statehood. The institutions showed remarkable progress and she was proud to be a member of CHW and to have helped it all grow. As she drove over the roads of Israel, the words came into her mind that “God works in many way his wonders to perform” – an economic and social miracle had been performed in half a century – the barren hills had been made green with trees, new cities, factories, schools and colleges, with a teeming population. Theodor Herzl’s words were in evidence everywhere: “If you will it, it is no fable.”

Success stories from CHW Centres
CHW Walk in the Park is quickly becoming a popular event, now taking place in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver with more Centres soon to come!
CHW CALGARY RAISES over $2,000 USING peer-to-peer fundraising! Since 1911, CHW Calgary members and friends have come together to hold numerous events and fundraisers in support of CHW’s projects for Children, Healthcare and Women. Always keeping with the times in their fundraising efforts, they recently decided to try their hand at implementing an online fundraising campaign. As the largest and strongest women’s organization in their local community, CHW Calgary knew they had to stay on top of the latest fundraising trends. On August 24, 2014, CHW Calgary held its first-ever Walk in the Park; inspired by the successful online fundraiser first held by Montreal’s Anna Zaitchick Chapter and now taking place each year in PAGE 58 - ORAH MAGAZINE
Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. Enthusiastic Calgary Centre members gathered their friends for support to ensure that the Walk in the Park was a great success, raising over $2,000! In keeping with modern fundraising efforts, the Centre used an online peerto-peer fundraising tool – truly the secret to the Walk in the Park’s success. Since 2014, CHW has been offering Blackbaud’s TeamRaiser to aid Centres and Chapters across the country in their online fundraising efforts by turning event participants into fundraisers. Blackbaud is Canada’s leading provider of nonprofit software and services, and their TeamRaiser software is a complete online event
fundraising solution with tools to help recruit, maximize participant fundraising, and maintain momentum long after the event. With TeamRaiser, supporters find it easy to register, recruit teammates, and start fundraising quickly. The key to TeamRaiser’s success is the ability to tap into the power of peer-to-peer networks. Peerto-peer fundraising is about the power of social media to reach out to friends, family members and coworkers. It allows CHW members to engage people in their own social circles to fundraise for CHW’s projects. Each event participant fundraises on their own, as TeamRaiser provides the best possible way

Centre and Chapter Fundraisers to connect through tools that maximize social networking as a means of achieving greater fundraising goals. CHW Centres benefit from a streamlined payment process with a system that notifies them immediately by e-mail when a supporter has made an online donation. This allows participants to thank their supporters in a timely manner, as well as efficiently follow-up with those who have not yet made donations – allowing for a better allocation of volunteer resources. CHW Calgary found great success with this approach, as most participants who were contacted ended up making a donation as well!

Speaking of donations, the TeamRaiser system also allows event supporters who cannot attend an event to make a donation instead. Since CHW’s online fundraising is integrated with Facebook, it’s easier than ever to spread the word. By using all these strategies, CHW Calgary was able to ensure the success of their event. In turn, they had great results with online fundraising.

Walk in the Park On Sunday August 24, 15 CHW members and friends took a 5km walk along the Glenmore Reservoir pathway in solidarity with Israel. A multigenerational group participated and it was a great time to chat, get some fresh air and see the beautiful scenery around the reservoir. We raised $2015. Leadership Recognition On Sunday, October 12, about 60 people - members, friends and family - gathered at Fanny Wedro’s home to recognize Lily Fixler for her years of leadership as CHW Calgary President. Lauren Bell and Gail Ksienski made presentations on behalf of National and the Calgary Centre. Linda Barron and her group of eager ladies were thanked for making this event happen. Card Party Close to 100 ladies came out to the Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club for a wonderful lunch and an afternoon of games on Wednesday, October 22. Thank you to the Tikvah Chapter: Carol Allan, Sheila Gurevitch and Gail Ksienski for organizing a lovely event. Mimi Breitman and Wynne Thal did a marvellous job of gathering numerous door prizes and raffle items. We thank the organizers for their generosity and support, and thanks to our donors and all who participated. Together we raised over $4200. Toy Drive Our 12th Annual Toy Drive was held in December. Driven by volunteers, CHW Calgary collected over $5,000 worth of toys and gift certificates. These were cheerfully delivered to children in need at Jewish Family Services of Calgary and to the Oncology Unit at Alberta Children’s Hospital. CHW london Bertha Weinstein Chapter Honours Nonagenarians Once again the Bertha Weinstein Chapter of CHW London held an Afternoon Tea on a cold Sunday in January to honour our newest nonagenarians Pepa Livingstone and Paula Zaifman. Once again the event was held at Temple Israel and once again the afternoon was enjoyed by the large number of attendees. MC Mina Sussman invited both Rabbi Clark and Rabbi Dressler to offer meaningful words of prayer.

Our Guest Speaker, Dr. Irina Sanatani presented slides and an excellent program in which she explained the use of interventional neuroradiology in the treatment of stroke at the CHW Marla Dan Stroke and Invasive Neuroradiology Institute at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Israel. Her talk was followed by the highlight of the afternoon which was the honouring of our newest nonagenarians- Pepa Livingstone, who was introduced by Jill Simmons and Paula Zaifman who was introduced by her daughter, Darlene Zaifman-Guslits. Past honourees, Fanny Goose, Jeanne Greenberg, Ursula Miller and Letty Stork were also recognized. The afternoon continued with the fabulous tea and refreshments provided by many members of the chapter – our famous party sandwiches were made by Mina Sussman, Sabina Finestone and Florence Scott, while the cake of honour was made by Sharon Ublansky. Tova Zarnowiecki surprised and delighted us by bringing plants for all of the honourees. We were pleased to welcome Susan Truppe, M.P. for London North Centre, as a last minute and special guest at our event.

Cooking Night In September, CHW Montreal Young Professionals hosted an interactive cooking class at Loblaws St. Jacques. Participants learned how to make a healthy, super food, apple-themed four-course meal (just in time Rosh Hashanah!). The menu included: Zucchini Apple Bread, Quinoa and Black Bean Salad with Apricot Lime Vinaigrette, Kale, Apple and Pear Salad and Thai-Inspired Raw Vegetable Pasta. The creations were enjoyed by participants after class. Heidi Hoffman and Andrea Waserman spoke about CHW and distributed printed materials about CHW to familiarize participants with our organization. Art Soirée CHW Montreal hosted a Red Carpet Art Soirée on Wednesday, October 1st at Galerie de Bellefeuille. Past honourees Jacques and Helen Bellefeuille graciously opened their gallery to the CHW Art Soirée which was a new twist on their fabulous art auction. Guests were treated to a beautiful selection of art in the silent auction as well as an abundance of art to choose from in Galerie de Bellefeuille’s newly renovated space. The event raised close to $80,000 for CHW projects in support of Children, Healthcare and Women. The Art Soiree committee included Lianne Routtenberg, Alicia Epstein, Cara Itzkovitz, Sigal Weizmann, Alice Anidjar, Jacquie Young, Marla Goodwin Zipper (CHW Montreal President), Alana Shiveck, Sarah Hutman, Alison Miller and Norma Bassal. Chanukah Party On Tuesday, December 16, CHW Montreal hosted its Chanukah Party. The guest speaker was Twinkle Rudberg, Founder of Leave Out Violence (LOVE). The LOVE organization was founded in Montreal by Twinkle Rudberg whose husband Daniel was killed by a fourteen-yearold gang member on the streets of downtown Montreal. LOVE helps youth

CHW ottawa Negev Chapter Phantom Tea The annual Negev Chapter fundraiser this year is a Phantom Tea, which was launched in October with the generous donation of a magnificent acrylic art piece by Sylvia Klein titled “The Three Graces” (22” wide and 29” high). We hope to raise a lot of much-needed funds, and we are very grateful for Sylvia’s thoughtfulness. Opening Council Meeting CHW Ottawa Centre’s opening Council meeting was held September 18th at the beautiful residence of the Israeli Ambassador to Canada. Mrs. Miriam Barak, wife of Ambassador Rafael Barak, was our gracious host. Approximately 50 ladies, including CHW members, members of the embassy family, and interested prospective members were in attendance. Mrs. Barak and Alina Ianson, CHW National Executive Director, were our other guest speakers. Attendees also saw a slide presentation of some of our CHW projects in Israel.

Amit Chapter 40th Anniversary Party CHW’s Amit Chapter celebrated its 40th anniversary on November 22th. All former and current members were invited. A game of Trivia, complete with prizes, served as icebreaker, followed by a session of Israeli dancing. Members provided delicious desserts. A slide show of old photos ran throughout the evening. Much shmoozing and reminiscing took place. Some of our members have been active for all 40 years! We wish all members many more in good health. CHW Ottawa Wins National Video Challenge! CHW toronto Gila Chapter Walk in the Park On Sunday September 14, 14 women from Gila Chapter took part in a walk at a nearby park and had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying nature. Gila raised over $25,000 for our beloved projects in Israel. Our thanks to CoChairs Diane Ehrlick and Joyce Jacobs and to the fundraising efforts of our members. A special shout out goes to Shellianne Bedder Green whose Herculean fundraising efforts allowed us to exceed our goal.

Hatikvah Chapter - Unworthy Creature On November 24, Hatikvah Chapter presented our third program in our Speaker Series: “Unworthy Creature An Evening with Author Aruna Papp and Journalist Barbara Kay.” Together, Ms. Papp and Ms. Kay enthralled our sellout audience with Ms. Papp’s personal story of honour-based suppression and violence, and her commitment to helping other women overcome such fate. This inspiring and unforgettable program then continued with a lively and informative question-and-answer period, and a sumptuous dessert buffet. Machar and Lev Zahav Chapters Uncovered: Billy Joel and Elton John On Thursday, November 13 Machar and Lev Zehav Chapters presented UNCOVERED: Billy Joel and Elton John. The iconic musical catalogues of these two legendary ‘piano men’ came to life in concert. We experienced the music of the director’s wild imagination and theatrical arrangements of some of Canada’s best musical actors from Broadway to Stratford. Once again, we had a SOLD OUT event. UPDATES FROM COAST TO On September 21, CHW Vancouver held its opening event, a brunch with a fashion show and a program honouring dedicated volunteer Bonnie Belzberg. The event drew over 120 women who came to offer “kavod” to Bonnie as well as to see the lovely fall fashions from Stepin’ Out Boutique. The tributes to Bonnie highlighted her many past contributions including chapter and council presidencies. She remains an involved, integral part of the organization. Bonnie mentioned the friendships that she enjoys with her CHW compatriots and she thanked her family for their support. The event concluded with an eclectic group of “Hadassah Ladies” acting as models. From shoes to hats and everything in between, the women of CHW showcased a range of beautiful fashions for every age and body. CHW Vancouver is proud to continue its ongoing series of “Meducation” events, the most recent of which was held on November 25, 2014. We began the evening with a presentation to Sylvia Cristall, acknowledging her contributions to the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. Her generous gift facilitated the establishment of the Sylvia & Lorne Cristall Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit. The “Meducation” event began with Bonnie Belzberg giving a personal account of her husband’s recent cardiac incident. It was moving to hear the story, and empowering to learn how a layperson can make a difference – CPR saves lives! After Bonnie’s talk, the keynote speaker (Cardiologist Dr. Michael Epstein) presented a slide show and provided practical information as well as statistics and research findings. The event was as interesting as it was enjoyable. It has been many years since a Vancouverite accepted the honour and responsibility of the CHW National presidency. Surrounded by some predecessors and friends, Claudia Goldman was inducted as the 22nd National President of CHW at the AGM in Toronto on November 16, 2014. Our “Meducation” event on November 25th marked Claudia’s first appearance at home as our National President. We celebrated the auspicious occasion with a Mazel Tov cake and the presentation of a collection of cards and congratulatory messages that were sent to Claudia from around the country. Vancouver is proud to have one of our most passionate CHW advocates as president. We know our organization is in very capable hands and will go from strength to strength with Claudia at the helm. We look forward to hosting more local events in which she will be recognized and honoured. CHW has discovered how to make money for CHW

Paulette was ably assisted by her young daughter Amy and her mother Simone who was the ‘model’. The combination of lovely baking and fruit, and the spa setting, provided our members with a fine afternoon among friends. Fall Film Night On November 14, again at the Jewish Community Centre, we showed the film The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler. This film tells the compelling story of Polish Catholic social worker, Irena Sendler, who, with a group of compatriots, saved 2500 Jewish children from Warsaw’s Jewish Ghetto during the German occupation of Poland. A lively discussion followed the film.

December Chanukah Party On Thursday December 18, about 75 people gathered at the beautiful home of Helene Kadziora, for our annual Chanukah party. A sumptuous feast greeted us in the dining room (of course contributed by our members!), including latkes courtesy of our hostess Helene. We welcomed the third night of Chanukah by lighting menorahs and singing the blessings and traditional Chanukah songs. In between eating and socializing, people participated in the great dreidle spin off competition run by Beverley and Lionel Merson. A fun raffle was held for 4 items. Over $350 was donated by the guests. Thanks to the following for making the evening a super success: hostess extraordinaire Helene Kadziora, Josie Davidson for her planning and set up, Esther Laredo for donating 3 raffle items, setting up the kitchen and washing stacks of dishes after, Celia Negin helping wherever needed, Damaris Notte, Jan and Stewart Wilson for cleanup, Ken Mintz, Stewart Wilson and David

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Honorary National President, Neri Bloomfield z’l.
We at Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW) are deeply saddened by the loss of Neri. Involved with CHW for over 65 years, Neri filled almost every position within the organization, and in 1972 was elected National President – the youngest in our nearly 100 year history. Neri leaves behind a legacy of philanthropy, particularly with her work at CHW. A true leader and Zionist, she didn’t just walk the walk, she walked with a purpose. Neri knew how to take our organization, and its projects, to new heights, and she did so with integrity and purpose. With a platform deeply rooted in Zionism, Neri saw great success during her term as National President. Highly respected among CHW’s leadership, members, and staff, Neri ensured that CHW would continue to meet the objectives of our mission, providing care and support for women, children and families both in Israel and Canada.
Upon Neri’s completion of her term as CHW’s National President in 1976, she was honoured with the naming of the Neri Bloomfield Academy of Design in Israel, a project that she strongly supported for many years, as it that was true to her heart. At the time, Neri said of CHW, “I did everything I could since you bestowed the honour of President upon me in January 1972 until this day, I feel that I wore the mantle of leadership with Zionist pride and dedication to our ideals.” We are proud of all that Neri accomplished in her life, and of the spirit of generosity and caring that she shared with CHW and so many organizations. May her memory be a blessing.
