have had the time of my life creating the concept of ciao bella! Magazine and bringing it to fruition with a talented team. I hope you have as much fun reading it as we've had putting it together. It is my hope that ciao bella! serves as a gentle reminder to slow down once in a while and gain clarity on how well you are nurturing yourself. So, here's what I suggest. Read ciao bella! cover to cover. By flipping through the pages of a glossy women's magazine, you'll have begun the pampering process. And who knows where that may lead you? October is "Pinktober" for ciao bella! and it is wonderful to share with you some of the passionate organizations that are raising funds to bring awareness, support, prevention, and a cure for breast cancer; a disease that affects 1 in 8 women. In this issue you'll read about the inspirational leader, Dorothy Gibbons, Co-Founder and CEO of The Rose, a non-profit which provides quality breast care and bone density screenings. Those who are insured help to cover the cost of services for uninsured women. Dorothy discusses how practicing and teaching yoga has made a positive difference for her and the women she helps. Along the way I learned about another amazing organization called The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation, a non-profit that provides services for cancer survivors including breast reconstruction and UH scholarship opportunities to students who have lost a parent to the disease. The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation is encouraging the benefits of yoga this month with a festival at The Houstonian. While we were so focused on" the girls," it seemed timely to bring you a great article on bra fitting written by international breast expert, Elisabeth Dale, author of bOObs: A Guide To Your Girls. I also thought there should be more fabulous women over 40 on magazine covers and ciao bella! is delighted to feature entrepreneur and mom of four, Jessica Alaine on our inaugural cover. When we got to know Jessica, we found that her outer beauty was truly an expression of her inner beauty. Be sure to read her Beauty Confessional to learn Jessica's health and beauty secrets. And I'm excited to share with you a Q & A with Houston's Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, about her NY Times Bestselling Book, Daring Greatly. Balancing Mind, Body and Spirit in the Nonprofit World by Karen Campbell
F
inding balance between body and spirit is important for most CEOs. But for one heading a nonprofit breast health organization and going through a divorce, it was critical. So while dealing with changes on the personal and professional front, Dorothy Weston turned to yoga. Now, 13 years later, Dorothy Gibbons is remarried, still the CEO and Co-Founder of The Rose, and a certified yoga instructor. “What I learned, as a student, is that yoga really isn’t about perfect poses, it’s about the balance and the breathing,” she shared. “You can be young or old, big or small, and you can still do the asanas (poses) in yoga.” “But it’s more than the poses. For me, it made so much sense because it’s a spiritual journey as much as a physical one.” Ever the teacher, Dorothy is quick to point out that in fact there are eight aspects or “limbs” to yoga including emphases on morality, breathing, control of the senses, concentration, devotion, meditation as well as the body postures. “You can’t deal with the injustices and tragedies we see without some kind of spiritual formation. untimely death then discovers that she has breast cancer, you need a way to put life in perspective. Yoga reminds me to breathe.” “When we are under stress, we don’t breathe. Or we breathe too shallow. Yoga teaches deep breathing and to pay attention to your breath,” she added. Other lessons on life and leadership can be found on the yoga mat as well, she points out. • “Every yoga teacher will tell you, ‘Let your body tell you what it needs,’ and that’s what we say at The Rose, too. A woman sometimes knows before anything shows up on a mammogram that something has invaded her body.” • “When I lay down my yoga mat, I create a sacred space. Space is important at The Rose too. We’ve worked hard to make our spaces inviting and comfortable.” • “In our Western World we place so much emphasis on how far you can go, how high you can jump and how fast you are, but yoga is not competitive. When it comes to quality breast health care, we want to make it abundantly clear that every woman deserves The Rose, and until there is a cure, she will have it.”

Dorothy has offered instruction on yoga at The Rose several times in the past. Patients, staff and survivors attended. “Survivors went away feeling they had more control and that they could do things they didn’t think they could. While, yes, it increased their range of motion that surgery had limited, it really gave them time to calm their mind.” With a new awareness campaign called Me2 that encourages women to prioritize their health and “think me too,” Dorothy hopes that yoga instructors and studios will opt to be a part of the Me2 Community, partnering with either the Featherwood or Galleria locations for yoga classes and instruction as well as promoting the necessity of prevention like annual screenings. “We depend on community support in order to maintain our commitment to serve both the insured and uninsured,“ Dorothy said. “Insured women who come to The Rose help offset the cost of taking care of the uninsured. Businesses who donate services or sponsor events, and corporations who invite us in to provide mobile services, these are the keys for a caring community. We wouldn’t be in the 24 counties we are in now, we couldn’t serve the 33,000 women we do annually, if it weren’t for that support.”

Next Month 9th Annual Breast Health Summit being held at Sheraton North Houston, 15700 John F. A
s women, we tend to spend a lot of time and energy on our outward appearance: the hairstyle, the mani-pedi, the outfit, the gotta-have-it shoes. But when is the last time you gave some serious thought to what's happening on the inside? Usually, we only think about what's going on in our bodies when there's a problem… such as a lump in the breast, sudden hot flashes or unexplained shortness of breath. What if there was a way to give your body a "maintenance check" so that warning signs of health issues could be detected early… before they developed into serious problems? There is a way. It's called thermography. Thermography is a screening process that detects heat variations in different areas of the body. Abnormalities at either temperature extreme may indicate early stages of a problem. For example, a "cold" area may be a sign of insufficient blood supply, while a "hot spot" may indicate inflammation. It's a noninvasive, no-touch procedure that involves no radiation. Thermography can be especially helpful in three areas that top the list of women's health concerns: heart health, breast health and hormonal wellness. The American Cancer Society tells us that 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. While cancer can only be diagnosed through aspiration or biopsy, thermography can highlight certain warning signs. By showing temperature variations in the breast, thermography can indicate the first signs of new blood vessel formation, which is necessary to sustain a tumor in its earliest stages. Of course, thermography is not a diagnostic tool in itself. What it does do is empower you with some key insights into what is going on in your body. Honor your breasts with a little bra curiosity. Discover the joys of wearing a bra
you love. It’s not that complicated. Ask yourself what you don’t like about your current bra. There are many simple solutions to common bra problems. Schedule a proper bra fitting from a department store or specialty lingerie shop, or take some time to research specific issues and make bra size or style changes.

No two brands are going to fit you the same way. Many women wear two different sizes in one month. Don’t think one letter is the only answer. Surveys show that women wear up to 8 different sizes of bras in their lifetime. (I wore that many in one pregnancy). Know that being a woman means facing these ups and downs, whether from weight changes, pregnancy, or age. Don’t let normal bra challenges defeat you. And that neighbor with the fabulous rack and perfect body? Believe me, she has her own issues.

Sugar May Be Sweet But It's Not A True Friend

he diagnosis of an advanced stage cancer in my father-in-law initiated my entire family to take a serious look at what we were eating. We made numerous dietary changes and eliminating sugar was one of the most challenging, especially for the children. In our family, eating sweets after dinner was the norm. So to make our decision more palatable, I decided to take on the challenge and learn how to make desserts without using sugar. In my quest, I discovered many wonderful websites and cookbooks that I refer to frequently. With a conscious effort, I am now able to make simple and delicious desserts that contain little or no sugar. It took some time for our family to adjust to these new desserts, but I can now happily attest to the fact that we no longer crave sugar. There are a number of things that you can do to eliminate or significantly reduce your sugar intake successfully: Read and understand current research on the negative effects of eating sugar. Various articles on this subject written by doctors and nutritionists can be found online. Some great sources are www.Mercola.com and www. webmd.com. Books such as Suicide by Sugar written by Nancy Appleton, Ph.D. is also a great read. Understanding this subject has really helped my family and I stick to our dietary changes. On-going medical research that has been conducted by University College London (UK) clearly suggests that consuming sugarladen foods and drinks actually feeds cancer cells and allows them to multiply and spread rapidly through the body. Start by cutting out the sugar gradually. Making slow but gradual changes worked well for us because it gave our taste buds time to adjust. Experiment using different recipes from books, magazines and websites that don’t contain sugar. A couple of wonderful websites that I frequently use for inspiration are www.fatfreevegan.com and www.Allrecipes.com (Sugar free recipes). Another great source of information is The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook by Mark Hyman, M.D. You will be pleasantly surprised with the many interesting desserts you can create without sugar. I have learned to make some wonderful cookies, muffins, cakes and even a sugar-free cheesecake using natural sugar substitutes such as cranberries, figs, dates, raisins and Stevia which is a fruit-derived sweetener.
Eating healthy is the key to preventing and in some cases reversing many systemic illnesses. Make positive changes today and experience for yourself how your health improves and how much better you will feel. •

While sitting in her lavish living room donned with eclectic antiques, soft lighting and bold textures, one feels like they have indeed stepped back in time. When asked to describe her company, Camelot’s Consulting, Jessica shared the reasoning behind the name. “The Renaissance period was a time of power and presence. It was a magical time where anything was possible. Renaissance is a French word meaning ‘new birth’, a name given to the movement in Europe that inspired man to abandon the restraints of the middle ages and to develop modern interests.”
At the Round Table Jessica grew up in Conroe and began her career in Houston over a decade ago completely by chance. A friend called her one-day to inquire if she would help organize the office of another friend. After Jessica finished the project, the woman asked her to come back every week. Word spread and eventually, her organizational skills led to a full time commitment in

helping others do what she does best. As Jessica became more in demand, she expanded her business, offering a slew of services, including public relations, product development, interior design, and problem solving. Her keen sense of planning, along with her background in mass media and communications, has led to a successful consulting vocation. Currently, Jessica is designing the interiors of a new sub-division with Inderra Builders, whom she hires for every remodeling or renovation project. ypically, when a woman reaches the age of 50 she reaches a stage in life where she experiences a drop in hormone levels, her ovaries stop producing eggs and her body no longer experiences a menstrual cycle. This stage has been termed menopause which means “the end of cycles”. Although this stage is natural and inevitable to all women, sometimes menopausal symptoms can be very uncomfortable due to the many hormonal changes that the body is experiencing. Scientists have identified more than 30 different symptoms associated with menopause including: hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, reduced sex drive, fatigue, weight gain and difficulty losing weight. Many women experiencing the menopause stage will turn to hormone treatment since hormonal imbalances are the main cause of symptoms. This approach treats menopause from the inside out and is unique to each woman. Recent advances in hormone therapy have allowed women to manage a natural drop in testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and DHEA. PREPARATION Melt butter in heavy large pot over Medium heat. Add onions and sauté until translucent, about 10 minutes. Mix in pumpkin, milk and crushed red pepper. Working in batches, puree mixture in food processor. Return to pot. Add broth and simmer to blend flavors, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into soup bowls. Project Instructions Step 1 Measure the center point of the pumpkin. Cut two pieces of tape 3" long. Overlap the ends to create a “V”. 1. What does it mean to “Dare Greatly?”

The phrase ‘Daring Greatly’ is from Theodore Roosevelt’s speech, Citizenship in a Republic. This is the passage that made the speech famous: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly . . .” The first time I read this quote, I thought, “This is vulnerability. Everything I’ve learned from over a decade of research on vulnerability has taught me this exact lesson. Vulnerability is not knowing victory or defeat, it’s understanding the necessity of both; it’s engaging. It’s being all in.” Vulnerability is not weakness, and the uncertainty, risk and emotional exposure we face every day are not optional. Our only choice is a question of engagement. Our willingness to own and engage with our vulnerability determines the depth of our courage and the clarity of our purpose.

2. Why do you think we’re living in a culture of “never enough?” Scarcity thrives in a culture where everyone is hyperaware of lack. Everything from safety and love to money and resources feels restricted or lacking. We spend inordinate amounts of time calculating how much we have, want, and don’t have, and how much everyone else has, needs, and wants. The greatest casualties of a scarcity culture are our willingness to own our vulnerabilities and our ability to engage with the world from a place of worthiness. After doing this work for the past twelve years and watching scarcity ride roughshod over our families, organizations and communities, I’d say the one thing we have in common is that we’re sick of feeling afraid. We want to dare greatly. We’re tired of the national conversation centering on “What should we fear?” and “Who should we blame?” We all want to brave. Our culture of scarcity is defined by this sentence: Never _______________enough. It only takes a few seconds before people fill in the blanks with their own version: Never good enough. Never perfect enough. Never thin enough. Never powerful enough. Never successful enough. Never smart enough. Never certain enough. Never safe enough. Never extraordinary enough. The three components of scarcity are shame, comparison, and disengagement. To
transform scarcity we need to Dare Greatly; we need to cultivate worthiness, a clear sense of purpose, and we need to re-engage.
3. What are the greatest myths about vulnerability? I define vulnerability as exposure, uncertainty, and emotional risk. Yes, feeling vulnerable is at the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief and disappointment, but it’s also the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity. When we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Myth #1: Vulnerability is weakness. The perception that vulnerability is weakness is the most widely accepted myth about vulnerability and the most dangerous. We love seeing raw truth and openness in other people, but we’re afraid to let them see it in us. We’re afraid that our truth isn’t enough – that what we have to offer isn’t enough without the bells and whistles, without editing, and impressing. Myth #2: “I Don’t Do Vulnerability.” Regardless of our willingness to do vulnerability, it does us. When we pretend that we can avoid vulnerability we engage in behaviors that are often inconsistent with who we want to be. Experiencing vulnerability isn’t a choice - the only choice we have is how we’re going to respond when we are confronted with uncertainty, risk, and emotional disclosure. Myth #3: We Can Go It Alone. Going it alone is a value we hold in high esteem in our culture, ironically even when it comes to cultivating connection. The vulnerability journey is not the kind of journey we can make alone. We need support. We need folks who will let us try on new ways of being without judging us. Myth #4: Trust Comes Before Vulnerability. There is no trust test, no scoring system, no green light that tells us that it’s safe to let ourselves be seen. Trust is a product of vulner-
ability that grows over time and requires work, attention, and full engagement. The research participants described trust as a slow-building, layered process that happens over time.
4. What do you think the key to combating vulnerability is? The courage to be vulnerable means taking off the armor we use to protect ourselves, putting down the weapons that we use to keep people at a distance, showing up, and letting ourselves be seen. As children we found ways to protect ourselves from vulnerability, from being hurt, diminished, and disappointed. We put on armor; we used our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors as weapons; and we learned how to make ourselves scarce, even to disappear. Now as adults we realize that to live with courage, purpose, and connection —to be the person whom we long to be—we must again be vulnerable. We must take off the armor, put down the weapons, show up, and let ourselves be seen. In Daring Greatly I talk about going inside the armory to identify the shields we use to protect ourselves and provide some strategies that can help transform the way we live, love, parent and lead.
5. What is one of your favorite examples of how you or someone you know has “Dared Greatly?” I hear and see examples of daring greatly everyday. Sometimes people think that “daring greatly” means parachuting from a plane or climbing a mountain. Practicing vulnerability is about raising your hand at a PTO meeting and asking a tough question. It’s sharing an innovative (and seemingly strange) idea at work. It’s setting a boundary, asking for help, or offering support to someone who is struggling. If we want to change our lives, our families, or our community, we need a critical mass of ordinary courage. We need to dare to show up and be seen. •

ulian Mora, of Katy, has been in the male entertainment business for 25 years. The 43-year-old father of two has been featured on “America’s Got Talent,” as well as across the globe. How did you get started in this business?
When I was 18, I was looking for another job to supplement my income. I saw an ad in the local paper looking for dancers for a singing telegram business. This was an opportunity to dance and make money. I rehearsed and rehearsed until I felt comfortable.
Where do you perform?
Currently our Houston show is at Club SOHO, off Highway 59 at Hillcroft. Our show plays every Saturday from 8-10 p.m. www.HUNK-O-MANIA.com. We also tour around the USA and abroad. How do you prepare for a show?
Making sure the timing and choreography is right on is very important in separating what we deliver compared to many others. It’s not just the dance moves, but the whole performance, including attitude delivered in the performance. I direct every aspect of the show and work with the cast individually to deliver what I feel is right.

What are your best features?
There are six members of my current show. But, I also use and feature dancers from around the U.S. and Europe. I like to bring in the best talent and feature them not just in my show here, but also give opportunities to travel abroad.
I think my smile and eye contact. When I am performing there is nothing more effective than strong eye contact to the crowd and every once in a while that smile at the perfect time.
What can people expect at your show?
I believe they can expect to be in for quite a surprise. I love, love, love entertaining. I hear, “It’s not what I expected,” more often than not from the audience after a show, in a positive sense.
What’s your favorite way to relax?
I enjoy being at home watching a movie, or spending time with my little one. Going out to dinner and enjoying a margarita works, too. My little one is a ball full of energy but when he settles down and wants to cuddle, and shares the, “I love you, daddy,” and those hugs, nothing makes me happier and is always just what I need. •
