About the book

Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, a descendant of a national independence hero and a prominent Dominican intellectual, published an article titled "Italians in Dominican Life" in 2001, in which he highlighted the contributions of notable Italians in the Dominican Republic He emphasized that the article aimed "to shed light on a community that has been fundamental to Dominican life, history, and the formation of its national identity "

The Italian community has played a pivotal role in shaping many of the country’s defining characteristics by contributing to the development of its political, social, economic, and cultural structures Their influence has been seen in the establishment of the Navy, involvement in the fight for national independence, the strengthening of the Catholic Church, the educational system, and the economy Italians also participated in the first free elections, founded the first newspaper, and left a lasting impact on architecture, art, cinema, music, and literature, helping to shape the cultural landscape of the Dominican Republic This profound influence made it essential to create a book that thoroughly examines the various facets of Italian contributions to the country

Through a combination of essays, images, and diverse perspectives, the book captures the essence of Italian cultural heritage in the Dominican Republic It presents a portrait of the country as one whose structures were shaped by centuries of interaction with Italian immigrants and whose ongoing participation in international dialogue has allowed it to create opportunities on a global scale since its inception

Reviews

Jeffery T. Morris, Journal of Global South Studies, University Press of Florida, Volume 39, No. 2, 2022, pp. 440-441.

“[...] It was therefore both fortunate and gratifying to encounter a book that expansively covers the centuries-long relationship between the people of two nations, Italy and the Dominican Republic, which has enriched both countries. [...] Andrea Canepari brings together in one large volume an impressive number of contributions from individuals of wide-ranging backgrounds, expertise, and experience, who collectively tell a fascinating story of the long and multifaceted relationship between Italians and Dominicans For those who are interested in Italian-Dominican relations, Italian and Dominican history, or in general how relationships between nations enrich not just national cultures but the human experience broadly, Andrea Canepari's The Italian Legacy in the Dominican Republic is a useful, edifying, and entertaining contribution to the literature on cross-national and global relations. The editor and all the many contributors are to be applauded for producing this informative and enjoyable book.”

Vittorio Cappelli, Giornale di Storia Contemporanea, XXVI, n.s., 2, 2022, pp. 183-184.

“This powerful volume presents several points of interest, the first of which lies in the fact that it is not the result of an academic project, but, as rarely happens, of an institutional initiative born in a diplomatic setting The curator of the research, which involved more than forty scholars, is Andrea Canepari, who arrived as Italy’s ambassador to Santo Domingo in 2017 He aimed to address the concerns of one of the most important Dominican intellectuals: Marcio Veloz Maggiolo [...]. Another point of interest in this third volume published by Canepari concerns the inclusion of the Dominican migratory case within those ‘other Americas’ that were previously overlooked or even ignored in studies on the history of the great transoceanic migration from Italy in the 19th and early 20th centuries The vast Caribbean basin, with its two large islands (Cuba and Hispaniola, of which the Dominican Republic is a significant part), the Central American isthmus (from Panama to Guatemala), and the South American countries bordering the Caribbean (Venezuela and Colombia), instead show the pervasiveness of Italian migrations, with the formation of small communities that often left significant and sometimes surprising marks on the history of these countries. [...]”

Francesca Puliga, Altreitalie, International Journal of Studies on Italian Migrations, Volume No. 63, 2021, pp. 142-144.

“[ ] Ambassador Andrea Canepari's decision to sponsor and curate the creation of this volume [ ] represents [ ] a particularly commendable initiative, capable of filling a gap, especially because it does not merely aim to celebrate but seeks to thoroughly analyze the contributions made by Italians to the life of this country The elegant and valuable graphic design of the publication is matched by a remarkable richness of content The work which involved historians, but also diplomats, clergy members, economists, jurists, and distinguished members of the Italo-Dominican civil society has resulted in an immersive piece, offering a multifaceted and comprehensive overview of the centuries-long experience of Italian immigrants in a nation to which they have given much and from which they have received much, as evidenced by all the meticulous studies that make up the book [ ]”

Ginetta Candelario, Smith College, Italian Quarterly, LIX, 231/234, 2022, pp. 179-181.

“[ ] Overall, the texts provide compelling evidence not only of a lasting but also significant Italian presence and legacy, which have contributed to key historical moments and nation-building projects From Columbus' expeditions, to the colonial administration of his son Diego, and the construction of the first permanent European colonial settlement in the Americas, Santo Domingo, to the central role of the Catholic clergy in the ecclesiastical and political history of Santo Domingo up until the 20th century, as seen in the case of Archbishop Ricardo Pittini during Trujillo's dictatorship; from the pivotal role of Italian architects and engineers in the design and construction of iconic buildings like the National Cathedral and the National Palace (Presidential Residence), to the complex but undeniable contributions of Dominicans of Italian descent, such as the Vicini family and Punta Cana developer Frank Ranieri, to the national economy, this book highlights the truly substantial contributions that Italians and their descendants have made to Dominican history, politics, economy, and society Indeed, through its celebratory and laudatory tone, the book succeeds in Canepari's aim to inspire a sense of ethnic pride in those who share this ItaloDominican heritage [ ]”

Aaron Coy Moulton, The Latin Americanist, The University of North Carolina Press, Volume 66, No. 3, 2022, pp. 350-351.

“[...] The Italian Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Canepari brings together a diverse array of contributors who each provide a few pages into various aspects of the history and culture between the two nations and its people. Including notable academic experts such as Mu-Kien Adriana Sang Ben and Michael Hall alongside remarks from Dominican and Italian politicians and officials, the volume could certainly entertain guests and visitors for a few minutes thanks to its colorful photos, assortment of topics and personalities, and very readable entries. [...]”

John Starosta Galante, Hispanic American Historical Review, Duke University Press, Volume 103, No. 3, 2023, pp. 538–540.

“[...] It is quite common for historians of Italian migrations in the Americas to lament even when writing about Argentina, Brazil, and the United States the lack of research on Italian communities in the Caribbean, Central America, and the Andes. Moreover, not enough work has been done on the connections linking the pre-unification participation of people from the Italian peninsula and nearby islands (Neapolitans, Venetians, and others) in Atlantic systems with the mass Italian migration after the Risorgimento of the 1860s. The Italian Legacy in the Dominican Republic helps to highlight these gaps. [...] In this book, as in Italian national history and the histories of other Italian communities abroad, the places (and the people from these places) that became part of modern Italy are incorporated into historical narratives that stretch back to ancient Rome. Whatever their original kingdoms, duchies, or republics may have been, these earlier migrants certainly paved a transatlantic path for post-unification Italians to follow. [...]”

Stefano Luconi, Archivio Storico dell’Emigrazione Italiana, Edizioni Sette Città, No. 18, 2022, pp. 120-122.

“[The volume] helps shed light [...] on a largely overlooked aspect of Italian emigration. Historiographical studies of that region, which Vittorio Cappelli has called the 'other Americas' [...], have rarely ventured beyond Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, and the much more studied Brazil [...]. The work coordinated by Canepari begins to fill the gap regarding the Dominican Republic.”

Bellunesi nel Mondo, Year LIX - No. 7, 2024, pp. 16-17.

“[ ] This powerful volume showcases, through the writings of scholars, intellectuals, politicians [...], economists, artists, and others, the strong presence and influence of our country in the distant Caribbean Republic. It particularly highlights important figures in various fields (ranging from state organization, to the Church, to art, economy, literature, and law) who have made Italy's influence felt since the very beginning of the nation's formation. Many held prestigious positions within the state's civil and military apparatus. Great emphasis is placed on ecclesiastical figures, starting with Alessandro Geraldini (1455-1524), the first bishop of Santo Domingo, and his successors The excellent relations between the two countries are consistently underscored, thanks to significant figures from institutions, the economy, and culture. The editorial quality and photographic documentation are particularly noteworthy This book uncovers a piece of Italy overseas ”

Néstor E. Rodríguez, Italian Canadiana, Volume 38, No. 1, 2024, pp. 94–96.

“Beyond its undeniable value in shedding light on Italian immigration to the Dominican Republic, Andrea Canepari's book highlights a much broader scope The book portrays crucial aspects of the history of Dominican capitalism, which began to consolidate at the end of the 19th century thanks to the entrepreneurial skills of key figures from the Italian community. Although Canepari emphasizes a socio-economic historical framework, the book also reveals a deep focus on cultural history. This attention to cultural aspects makes most of its forty-seven chapters enlightening, and at times, surprising for scholars of Italian and Dominican studies The comprehensive essay by Frank Moya-Pons, which opens the collection, is the best example of this textual alchemy, offering an account of the Italian presence in the Dominican Republic since the 15th century Moya-Pons mentions Columbus as the "discoverer" of the Caribbean, but also includes figures like the Centurión brothers and the Milanese merchant Girolamo Benzoni, who documented the atrocities of the Conquest of the Americas [ ]”

Olimpia Niglio, University of Pavia, forthcoming.

“[...] The volume [...] allows for an analysis and understanding of the essence of Italian creativity and culture as it has manifested in various sectors, building important bridges between Italy and the Dominican Republic where Italian immigration has contributed to creating opportunities for development and international dialogue. [...] The five sections, dedicated to history, architecture, literature and art, economics and science, as well as journalism, law, and social studies, trace the key stages of the interaction between the Dominican Republic and Italian culture, which has been expressed across many fields and has given rise to an invaluable heritage now preserved and valued by the local community. The volume has uncovered an incredible wealth of previously unknown legacies, whose roots extend from the explorations of Christopher Columbus, through the great migration of the 19th and 20th centuries, and up to the present day [ ]”

Rivista Marittima, June 2024.

“[...] This prestigious publication [...] finally allows for coverage of a part of national and international history that has been too long underemphasized It provides an in-depth exploration conducted by a broad group of researchers and experts, enabling both scholars and the "merely" curious to trace the history and integration experience of Italian immigrant communities in the Dominican Republic After a thorough historical reconstruction of the birth and development of the Italian community locally, and an analysis of the history of the Dominican Republic and its relations with Italy, the essays in the volume curated by Canepari present the influence left by Italian immigrants, whose descendants still play a significant role in the country’s development. The book not only details the more visible artifacts left in Santo Domingo by Italians and their descendants but also dedicates significant space to the effects of the ItaloDominican cultural fusion through literature, economics, and other public activities. Italian heritage is alive not only through artistic and economiccommercial works but also through journalism, forensic activities, and other meritorious contributions within Dominican society. José Rafael Lantigua, “Diario Libre” newspaper, August 13, 2021, p. 30.

“[ ] Reading this monumental work, one comes to realize that the presence of Italian surnames in our country is significant, and that, collectively, these Italian migrants and their descendants have earned a well-deserved prestige as co-founders of Dominican development. The fields in which those who once left Liguria, Calabria, Tuscany, or Piedmont to settle in this land, leaving behind the offerings of their labor and a long legacy, have contributed to improving and solidifying the foundations of our economy, culture, gastronomy, and faith And not only in Santo Domingo but also in other provinces where their influence has been notable [ ] It is astounding what this exiled population has achieved during the decades of their settlement in our land Their names enrich every furrow, and in many cases, they have opened windows to lay the foundations for great accomplishments that are today celebrated as part of the essence of our cultural and heritage identity. Luis Beiro, “Listín Diario” newspaper, July 11, 2021.

“[...] Anyone who flips through the pages of this work will sense the foundational presence of its curator. Despite his high responsibilities in leading his country’s diplomacy in Santo Domingo, the curator did not stop until he saw a project printed that he was able to build with love, faith, and professionalism. He brought together valuable writers, historical photos, and documents related to the development of relations between the two peoples [ ]”

José Rafael Sosa, “El Nacional” newspaper, August 12, 2021, p. 12.

“[The volume] is without a doubt the most important book on art, architecture, history, and economics, now presented as the product of the vision and hard work of the Italian ambassador to the country, Andrea Canepari, a promoter of the bond between his homeland and the Dominican Republic, with an immense ability to bring together cultural figures, in addition to his activities connecting the economic sectors of both countries The book, published with high artistic editorial standards, is a gem that takes the reader on a journey to explore the expressions of Italian culture embedded in Dominican life [ ]”

Donatella Alfonso, “La Repubblica” newspaper, June 4, 2021, p. 11.

“Christopher Columbus is not the only figure keeping the bond between Genoa and Santo Domingo alive. [...] Over the span of more than five centuries, connections stretched across continents have never been lacking. And it is through precise and meticulous work that the book The Italian Legacy in the Dominican Republic: History, Architecture, Economy, and Society, edited for Allemandi by Andrea Canepari, retraces and reconnects these ties [ ] A long, rich narrative with numerous contributions from scholars and institutional representatives (45 from the Dominican side alone, including the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader) [ ] A journey through names and stories, with prominent figures of Italo-Dominican heritage as key references, such as the Genoese merchant Giovanni Battista Cambiaso, founder of the Dominican navy and considered a national hero of the Central American nation, or the Pellerano family, originally from Santa Margherita Ligure, who founded the island's first daily newspaper around 150 years ago, and today owns the widely read Diario Libre [ ]”

“Hoy” newspaper, April 14, 2021.

“[...] Italians, together with their Dominican friends, have written fundamental pages in the history of the Dominican Republic and, in some cases, world history. At the same time, Italians have been present at all the key moments in the creation of the Dominican state, from the Navy to national independence and the Catholic Church, from education to the economy, from the first free elections to the first newspaper, from architecture - if we think of symbolic monuments of the Dominican Republic [ ] - to art and cinema, music and literature, agriculture and commerce This series of events highlights the common thread of the important role played by prominent Italians and contextualizes the significance of the various Italian contributions to the development of the Dominican Republic. Today, the ties between the two nations continue to strengthen, with many Italians, now rooted in the country for generations, continuing to contribute to its development [ ]”

“Diario Libre” newspaper, April 15, 2021, p. 23.

“[...] This bibliographic work [...] highlights the contribution that Italy has made to the history of the Dominican Republic and how figures such as Juan Bautista Cambiaso, Bishop Alessandro Geraldini, Christopher Columbus, Father Fantino Falco, Amadeo Barletta, and Rafael Ciferri, among other prominent Italians, have left, along with their Dominican friends, an indelible mark on national history [ ]”

About the book

This illustrated book narrates the story of a beautiful and enduring friendship: the one between Italians and Dominicans. Italians have been present in the Dominican Republic for many years and have contributed to numerous significant moments in the country’s history. Their influence can be seen in the construction of the Primatial Cathedral of the Americas, the establishment of the first newspaper, advancements in scientific research, and various stages of economic development aimed at improving living conditions and overall well-being. They were also instrumental in founding the Salesian Schools and establishing successful enterprises that generated wealth, particularly in the tourism sector. In 2020, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Juan Bautista Cambiaso was celebrated. A Genoese merchant, he was the founder of the Dominican Navy, a national hero, and Italy's Consul a remarkable example of this friendship, among many others that you will discover in the captivating pages of this book.
