The Latest Lao Hollywood Movie

John Kincaid Unleashed JJ Stomp

20

J

ohn Kincaid Unleashed is the latest martial arts action film from Lao Hollywood. JJ Stomp directs and stars in this martial arts movie for the whole family as Agent David Lee. The truth of the past comes to light as a crazed killer return’s to haunt Agent Lee and trying to take everything from him. To protect the ones he loves, Agent Lee must give everything he has. But will it be enough? Over his career JJ Stomp has been an author of two novels, a film writer, movie producer, director, stunt, actor, martial artist, and businessman. He holds a degree in computer science. With over many years of experience to his credit, he has trained in several martial arts and parkour, to create an action packed on screen presence. Of all his accomplishments, he considers John Kincaid Unleashed to be his crowning achievement.

22

JJ Stomp was born in the small town of Bueng Kang, LAOS. He started learning Muay Lao Boolan “Zang Seek Mai” and Muay Thai since he was very young age. He came to America in 1980, and completed high school and graduated from colleges in Minnesota. JJ Stomp has trained several martial art styles since 1983. For many decades he has focused on Muay Lao Boolan “Zang Seek Mai” or Elephant Stomp. Zang Seek Mai has similar techniques to Muay Thai Boran, and Bokator. Zang Seek Mai works a lot with your feet and incorporates a lot of stomping techniques. In 2000 JJ Stomp went back to his home town to pay his respects to his teacher Grandmaster Sengtavanh, who had passed away couple years after JJ Stomp left the country. JJ Stomp also met another Grandmaster “Kamanad” in Vientiane. For JJ Stomp it is amazing to know there are a few Zang Seek Mai masters and Grandmasters out there in the world. JJ Stomp is a business man, martial artist, film director, producer, writer, stunt man and actor. He has written two novels; Elephant Stomp and Asian Assassin which are out on Amazon, and other online bookstores around the world. The Elephant Stomp novel is the most important to him, as it is dedicated to his martial arts style and also dedicated to his wife Jenny B. Syonesa who passed away in a house fire on July 28, 2012. JJ Stomp has been inducted to several martial arts hall of fames including the World Wide Martial Arts Council, Action Martial Arts Magazine Hall of Honors, USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame, Masters Hall of Fame, Martial Arts History Museum , All-Pro Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame, Masters of Martial Arts Hall of Fame, Legends Of The Martial Arts Hall Of Fame, Munich Hall Of Fame, Kuroshi-Do Systems Hall of Honors and the Elite Black Belt Hall Of Fame.

This movie however, is more than being about what JJ Stomp can do, as many of his good friends and family came together to create this film. Full of martial arts masters; Grandmaster John Olivier, Grandmaster Tony Bowles, Sifu Eric Bettencourt, Arjarn Airr Anorith Phanthip, Sifu Darryl James, Master Wes Letioa, Master Sten Kerwin, Master Lucy Olivier, Guro Joseph Tarango, Master Greg Borchard, Master Greg Riley, Charles Reid, Eric Smith Nguyen, Jason Varonin, Sean Enos, Shawn Yeakley and Tony Connors as some of the talented big names involved in this project showcasing multiple martial arts performed at high levels. At just 4 years old Saiphapon Phanthip makes her big screen debut. Known as “Muay Thai-Lao Baby she performs at events on the west coast. In spite of all the big names on set, the person who stole the show was four year old Saiphapon Phanthip. As the daughter of the muay thai gym owner in Las Vegas, Saiphapon has been wandering around the mat and ring since she could crawl and kicking as soon as she could stand.

She regularly appears at events on the west coast and made her first appearance at just two years old. Her part in the movie was created specifically for her after JJ Stomp met her. “I had to have her!” he exclaimed. When asked, JJ Stomp described working on John Kincaid Unleashed (JKU) as “I’ve spent a lot of time on this project, but JKU doesn’t seem like work at all when you’re spending all day with your friends and family.”

Martial Arts Instructors are prepared to work with Seniors?

What is a Senior Citizen? They come in many forms, sizes, and with different abilities. Don’t count on them to always be weak, slow, and with no skills! Yes, many Seniors may need assistance and extra instruction while others may take you down. What Works? Lines (No), Repeat Skills (Yes), 28

Evade! Avoid or get away from someone or

something. This is a weak area of most peo-

ple young and old. Work on paying attention to your surroundings and always have an escape route. Sounds like house on fire and where do I go! Practice changes in surroundings, noises, people, quiet of birds, barking of dogs, and just gut feelings. This can be done in the training area and expanded to parking lot. I have turned the lights out and have “spooky” people in hiding. Many in the Martial Arts Community have been in the military or law enforcement. Utilize their talents!

Proper Attire: Practice in street clothes

and home clothes for the season. Think of restrictive winter clothes, summer loose clothes, and formal attire. They may let you move freely or restrict your movement. Some may even protect you from knife attacks. Training in loose gym clothes is the ideal situation. But not ideal all the time. Tight jeans will restrict movement. Again, practice for results! Know your limitations before you leave your house and the gym. The instructor should set the training location and dress.

Power and Agility! Seniors gain confiden-

ce and are proud of their progress. Reality should be a part of training. Introduce 1425 year males and females to a class now and then. Have them hold, grab, punch, drag, pull, and restrict the Senior. Wake Up Call! Stress Evade and Soft Targets! Seniors do not have the power and agility they once had. Seniors may be very good but have limitations that will be identified when stressed and challenged. This is for all Seniors willing to participate! The instructor must introduce the Senior to the real world.

Teachings of the Budha The Sound the Hare Heard Duddubha Jataka (Jataka No. 322)

O

ne morning while some bhikkhus were on their alms round in Savatthi, they passed some ascetics of different sects practicing austerities. Some of them were naked and lying on thorns. Others sat around a blazing fire under the burning sun. Later, while the monks were discussing the ascetics, they asked the Buddha, “Lord, is there any virtue in those harsh ascetic practices?” The Buddha answered, “No, monks, there is neither virtue nor any special merit in them. When they are examined and tested, they are like a path over a dunghill, or like the noise the hare heard.” Puzzled, the monks said, “Lord, we do not know about that noise. Please tell us what it was.” At their request the Buddha told them this story of the distant past. Long, long ago, when Brahmadatta was reigning in Baranasi, the Bodhisatta was born as a lion in a forest near the Western Ocean. In one part of that forest there was a grove of palms mixed with belli trees.[1] A hare lived in that grove beneath a palm sapling at the foot of a belli tree. One day the hare lay under the young palm tree, idly thinking, “If this earth were destroyed, what 34

would become of me?” At that very instant a ripe “Who saw it collapsing?” he asked. belli fruit happened to fall and hit a palm leaf making a loud “THUD!” “The elephants know all about it,” some animals replied. Startled by this sound, the hare leapt to his feet and cried, “The earth is collapsing!” He immediately When he asked the elephants, they said, “We don’t fled, without even glancing back. know. The tigers know.” Another hare, seeing him race past as if for his very The tigers said, “The rhinoceroses know.” The life, asked, “What’s wrong?” and started running, rhinoceroses said, “The wild oxen know.” The wild too. oxen said, “The buffaloes know.” The buffaloes said, “The elk know.” The elk said, “The boars “Don’t ask!” panted the first. This frightened the know.” The boars said, “The deer know.” The deer second hare even more, and he sprinted to keep said, “We don’t know. The hares know.” up. When he asked the hares, they pointed to one “What’s wrong?” he shouted again. particular hare and said, “This one told us.” Pausing for just a moment, the first hare cried, “The earth is breaking up!” At this, the two of them bolted off together.

The lion asked him, “Is it true, sir, that the earth is breaking up?” “Yes, sir, I saw it,” said the hare.

Their fear was infectious, and other hares joined them until all the hares in that forest were fleeing together. When other animals saw the commotion and asked what was wrong, they were breathlessly told, “The earth is breaking up!” and they too began running for their lives. In this way, the hares were soon joined by herds of deer, boars, elk, buffaloes, wild oxen, and rhinoceroses, a family of tigers, and some elephants. When the lion saw this headlong stampede of animals and heard the cause of their flight, he thought, “The earth is certainly not coming to an end. There must have been some sound which they misunderstood. If I don’t act quickly they will be killed. I must save them!” Then, as fast as only he could run, he got in front of them, and roared three times. At the sound of his mighty voice, all the animals stopped in their tracks. Panting, they huddled together in fear. The lion approached and asked why they were running away.

“Where were you when you saw it?” “In the forest in a palm grove mixed with belli trees. I was lying there under a palm at the foot of a belli tree, thinking, ‘If this earth were destroyed, what would become of me?’ At that very moment I heard the sound of the earth breaking up and I fled.” From this explanation, the lion realized exactly what had really happened, but he wanted to verify his conclusions and demonstrate the truth to the other animals. He gently calmed the animals and said, “I will take the hare and go to find out whether or not the earth is coming to an end where he says it is. Until we return, stay here.” Placing the hare on his tawny back, he raced with great speed back to that grove. Then he put the hare down and said, “Come, show me the place you meant.” “I don’t dare, my lord,” said the hare.

“The earth is collapsing,” they all answered. APRIL/2016

35

“Don’t be afraid,” said the lion. The hare, shivering in fear, would not risk going near the belli tree. He could only point and say, “Over there, sir, is the place of dreadful sound.” The lion went to the place the hare indicated. He could make out where the hare had been lying in the grass, and he saw the ripe belli fruit that had fallen on the palm leaf. Having carefully ascertained that the earth was not breaking up, he placed the hare on his back again and returned to the waiting animals. He told them what he had found and said, “Don’t be afraid.” Reassured, all the animals returned to their usual places and resumed their routines. Those animals had placed themselves in great danger because they listened to rumours and unfounded fears rather than trying to find out the truth themselves. Truly, if it had not been for the lion, those beasts would have rushed into the sea and perished. It was only because of the Bodhisatta’s wisdom and compassion that they escaped death. At the conclusion of the story, the Buddha identified the Birth: “At that time, I myself was the lion.”

MARTIAL SCIENCE MAGAZINE IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE YOU TO OUR FEATURED ARTIST,-

SENSEI KEVIN BERGQUIST 42

MSM: “Master Kevin, congratulations on your new Guinness World Record! Can you tell us a little more about that?” KB: “Absolutely! The record is for the Most Concrete Blocks Broken While Holding a Raw Egg.” MSM: “So let me get this straight, you can smash through bricks with a raw egg in your hand without breaking the egg?” KB: “Precisely! Most concrete breakers use their elbows to break, but I prefer to use my hands since there are more real life applications for striking. It takes some time to condition the bones but you’ll notice my breaking hand had developed a kind of pad to protect it. People always ask me if it hurts when I break ice, concrete, wood, or glass. I tell them it only hurts when the materials don’t break! Other than that, you just get some little cuts and scrapes as your hand goes through.”

APRIL/2016

43

44

MSM: “How is that different with an egg in your hand?” KB: “It is much harder. Try this. Push your finger into the knife edge of your other hand, the part you would use for a Shuto strike. Extend your fingers. Feel how soft it is? Now keep your finger there and make a fist and squeeze. You’ll notice your hand is now much harder. The muscles have balled up to provide a protective surface over the bone. This is why the Hammerfist technique is so great. Now imagine holding a baby bird in your hand. Just tight enough so that it won’t fly away but gentle enough that you won’t hurt it or make it uncomfortable. You’ll notice that the protective pad is gone and your fingers are apart. Now go smash through some slabs of concrete.” MSM: “No thanks. I think I’d break my hand. In fact I think most people would.” KB: “That’s true. After I posted the video, lots of people tried it. The comments were hilarious. People asking how to get raw egg out of the puzzle mats and asking the best ways to heal a swollen hand. Tons of people shared the video and it was fun watching it go viral. One lady shared it and said, “As far as pointless acts of precision go, this one is pretty cool!” The support and attention that this symbolic act has brought to the Martial Arts has been awesome. Inspiring people to push their limits.” MSM: “What do you mean by symbolic act?” KB: “To me it is symbolic of the true nature of the Martial Arts. People think Martial Arts are for destroying, however the truth is that the Arts are for preserving life amidst chaos. A fragile egg passing unharmed through concrete is symbolic of how we use our Arts to protect life.” MSM: “So you just woke up one day and decided to do it?” KB: “No, it wasn’t my idea at all. My friend, Michael McGann taught me how. We were sitting on my back porch talking about the Graduation Ceremony at my school the next day. I was being

promoted along with my students and wanted to do something special. I told him how the students had already seen me breaking large stacks of concrete on fire, 250 lbs of ice, wood, glass, etc. He told me to go and get an egg. He showed me the correct form and told me he use to break boards this way. After a little practice, I was able to hit my hand pretty hard and decided to go for it. The next morning, less than twelve hours from learning it. I tried it out on the bricks. If I succeeded, the students and parents would get a cool show, and if I failed, at least they would know that Sensei is at least trying to push his limits. I think I was just as surprised as they were when it worked on 9 bricks!” MSM: “How many did you do for the Record?” KB: “The previous record was 24, so I wanted to double it. I was able to do 50 on my first attempt. The video is on my Facebook if anyone wants to see it. Just send me a friend request. I was so excited to have done it, the camera zoomed in and I broke the egg in victory. Several months later, Guinness World Records informed me that my attempt had been denied. In my excitement, I did not have any witnesses inspect the egg for cracks before I broke it. Guinness World Records are very strict and their standards are very high. It really is difficult to get one. They encouraged me to try again so I did. The next time I did 28, but it was still enough to break the previous record.” MSM: “So someone else has done this before?” KB: “Well, Yes and No. There was a record for most bricks broken with a raw egg. After I got the record, one of my students bought the hardback book edition, thinking I would be in it. The books had already gone to press by the time I broke the record. There was a picture of the previous record holder and I was surprised by the way he did it. He held the egg in his many by hand. You can see it in the 2015 book. hand, but he broke the bricks with his elbow. Hopefully you’ll see me in the 2016 book! They I am the only person to have ever broken so usually come out around Christmas time.” 46

MSM: “What kind of conditioning did you do to prepare?’ MSM: “I heard you’ve been doing some movies lately as well. MSM: “How did you get involved in Martial Arts?” KB: “When I was five, I started training with my dad. He was such an amazing man. Kind, strong, and wise. He was a WWII Marine Corps Veteran who then went on to earn three Masters Degrees and spent 24 years as a Special Agent for the FBI. I remember one summer when I was little we would have water pistol fights in the yard. I thought I was sneaky and crept up on my Dad with my squirt gun. Before I could pull the trigger, he had disarmed me and I felt the spray of water hit my chest. I was amazed since I’d never seen him move that fast. He never really talked much about his glory days. I asked him to teach me, so at the age of five, I began my training with gun and knife disarms. He pulled out his 1954 FBI Training Manual and we worked it cover to cover over a period of a few years. When we were finished, I told him that I wanted to learn Karate so he took me to the local community center and signed me up. I’ve been training ever since. It’s impossible now to imagine my life without Martial Arts.”

There is no end to the things you can do and the lives of others you will impact. Enough talk about me. It’s your turn. Go do something AWESOME!!!”

MSM: “When did you start teaching?” KB: “When I was 16, I taught my first public seminar. I loved seeing the change and confidence that Martial Arts brings to people. I now own two schools and just launched a third which will also incorporate sports and gymnastics. The Martial Arts have given so much to me over the years, it is now my mission to share them with as many people as I can...” MSM: “How do we learn more about the awesome things you are doing?” KB: “Easiest way is to friend me on Facebook. Then send me a message on what your goals are. There is something powerful about saying your goals out loud and having a community of people to keep you accountable. As Martial Artists, we achieve the incredible every day. Think back to a time in your life, before APRIL/2016

INTERVIEW

SENSEI MANABU MURAKAMI

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO LEARN KARATE? I’ve been training in karate-do for some 40 years now and I am still not satisfied with the way I make a fist. Even though I think that I know what I’m doing, I am always discovering or noticing something new. When training, I think about what lies far down this profound path and I want to experience it with my own body, my own mind. Also, I have learned and received many different things from karate, and it is thanks to karate that I am the person I am today. I would like as many people as possible to know how wonderful karate is, regardless of their nationality or race, or their age or sex. And, as someone who has dedicated himself to the development and promotion of karate, whenever I see or hear about people whose lives have been enriched through karate, I become inspired to make an even greater effort. But the underlying feeling that is always present is the desire to become strong and to be strong.

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST MASTER? When I was nine years old, I was introduced to karate-do by the late Takaki Maruo Sensei at a dojo in my hometown of Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu. Between the ages of 11 and 15, I mainly played baseball, but at 15, I embarked down the path of karate in earnest. After that, upon entering Takushoku University, I moved to Tokyo and trained day in and day out with the university’s karate team under Katsunori Tsuyama Sensei.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE TRAINING WITH KANAZAWA SENSEI? When I was in my third year of middle school (15 years old), Shotokan Karate-do International held its first All-Japan Championship Tournament. That was the first time that I set eyes on Kanazawa Sensei. Later, when I was in high school, I saw Kanazawa Sensei again when he came to my hometown to teach. It was the first time that I received instruction from him and it made a great impression APRIL/2016

51

on me. I decided that I wanted to be like Kanazawa Sensei, so I joined the karate team of Sensei’s alma mater, Takushoku University, and after graduating, became a trainee of Shotokan Karate-do International and an instructor at SKI’s headquarters. After that, I not only trained with Kanazawa Sensei, I also served as his partner for demonstrations and accompanied him when he traveled overseas to teach. Although I was always with him, never once did he tell me what I should do. I learned from everything he did, watching him from behind wherever he went. For example, I would ask myself why Sensei was able to perform such techniques. And why he was able to maintain such mental fortitude. And what I would need to do to be like him. In this way, I did my best to emulate Sensei by looking for and studying as best I could the effort and approach to living behind his techniques and mental fortitude.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR JUDGMENT ABOUT THE KATA SANCHIN AND KIME?

style of karate, the kata Sanchin is very important in the same way that our Shuri-te style kata Naihanchi (Tekki) is. But as I haven’t studied Sanchin in much depth, I don’t think I am in the position to comment on the kata. As for kime, among the skills we employ in Shotokan karate, it is the most important. We must control shin-gi-tai (the mind, techniques and the body), synchronizing them all and directing them toward the target. And at a single instant, all of these must converge to fulfill a single objective, achieving a state of nothingness, which changes to become something of substance. Put another way, you could say that the sutra “Form is emptiness; emptiness is form” represents the foundation of karate-do.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER MOST IMPORTANT IN KARATE TRAINING?

I believe that the path of karate is one in which we can never find satisfaction, even if we spend our whole life trying. But continuing down this path It is my understanding that, within the Naha-te provides us with a means of discovering something

53

new. I believe that this requires passion and, more than anything else, depends on how fond you become of karate-do, on whether you can love karate-do.

HOW YOU DEFINE THE SHOTOKAN KARATE? I believe that Shotokan karate is characterized by its dynamic, linear movements, and by its kime. But similar to the law of yin and yang, there are two sides to every technique, and if you do not know both sides, then you will lack an understanding for one-half of these techniques. Because I believe that one’s body and the techniques a person uses are closely related to one’s personality and character, I think that is part of the reason why Shotokan karate is more popular worldwide than other styles. But when I talk about Shotokan, in the same way that Shotokai and other branches of karate are different in appearance, what is currently referred to in the world as Shotokan karate is based on the JKA style of Shotokan karate that was organized and established primarily by Masatoshi Nakayama Sensei and others of the Japan Karate Association. If we consider Master Gichin Funakoshi to be the 54

founder of Shotokan karate, as we can see from the fact that the Master was unable summarize what the style was, trying to define Shotokan karate is no easy task. I guess we could say that Shotokan karate is the karate to which Funakoshi Sensei aspired.

LYOTO MACHIDA, IS PERHAPS MOST FAMOUS PRACTITIONER SHOTOKAN KARATE IN MMA. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT SHOTOKAN PRACTITIONERS WHO FIGHT IN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS? I think that it is only natural for someone who is young to want have strong fighting skills and be physically strong. And if there are opportunities to express this desire and pursue this path as a career, then I think it is inevitable that many young people would seek to do so. Although karate, as a martial art, requires that practitioners constantly pursue strength, because each individual is different, training methods and content will differ depending on the type of strength that each person strives to achieve. Given the limited amount of time that we have in our lives, if that is the direction that one person wishes to go, then he should pursue it.

There are, of course, other people who seek to realize a different kind of strength through karate-do as budo (a martial art). There are some things that can only be achieved when you are young, and other things that you can only understand after you have grown older. The point is, karate-do can help individuals enrich their lives, which is why it is important that each person find their own

personal karate-do.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME MANABU MURAKAMI SENSEI. THIS QUESTION IS FREE FOR YOU TO TALK ABOUT WHAT DEEMED Through my encounter with karate-do and having Hirokazu Kanazawa Sensei as my mentor, I was able to discover who I really am. (Or maybe I should say that I am searching and training to find myself.) Karate-do is a path that continues from our predecessors of the past into the future. Where there is no master, there is no future. But with a dream and a goal, and by living steadfastly in the present, the path will continue onward. Although a long, long path still lies ahead, I intend to continue training, increasing my love of karate-do by putting all of my heart and soul into every punch and every kick. Thank you. Oss!

“Embrace everything you know and create something new…” – Grandmaster No-Won Park, FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL TEUK GONG MOO SOOL FEDERATION 58

From the Battlefields of Ancient Korea to the Battlefields of our Streets Introducing

Teuk Gong Moo Sool When discussing “martial arts” many forget the literal meaning which is “arts of war”. Originally these were systemized techniques that spelled the difference between life and death on the battlefield. The concepts of fair play, points, or sportsmanship were not even remotely considered in some cultures. As military advances were developed, the defenses against them progressed as well. The 20th Century was no different. In fact the 1970’s and 80’s in Korea saw a decidedly different approach to modern warfare. It began with a man name Park No-Won. Park was born in Iksan, South Korea on April 19th, 1956. The young boy quickly showed an aptitude for athletics and throughout elementary school competed in track and field events. In addition he started practicing Taekwondo at the age of nine alongside his uncles who were close in age to him. He was enthralled with it.

When he began middle school he traveled to a nearby town and visited 3 separate martial art academies a day. Like most young men he thought whatever he was doing at that moment was the universal truth and encountered any plateau with earnest. So completely immersed in the arts he spent every waking moment going through combinations in his mind. While in middle school and high school he would subtly practice motions with his fingers rather than pay attention in class. Needless to say he got scolded for that a few times.

to develop special martial art techniques for their counter terrorist agents. They needed a system that was quick to learn and efficient. The desperate urgency was due to a hijacked plane in ’77. As fate would have it a tragic event happened on October 26, 1980 President JungHee Park was assassinated. This postponed the actual systemization of the art now known as Teuk Gong Mu Sool.

On April 21st, 1981 it became an official subject in the Korean military training regimen. It encompassed eight internal and He studied like that for 10 years practicing external arts that GM Park researched ex7 days a week, rain or shine. Soon after tensively. In Korea mudo and musul have two different meanings. “Mudo” is a more modern term as “do” is in Japanese arts. “Sul” in Korean has a similar meaning as “jutsu” is in Japanese arts. It’s older and infers higher level skill for serious conflicts.

Another interesting difference is their version of the horse stance. GM Park sees the atypical horse stance as too wide for practical use while the typical fighting stance has no power. The most typical stance found in TGMS is the diamond stance seen in several of the photos. It resembles a tiger

crouching off to one side with hands raised and fingers open. It is useful at any direction and many kinds of techniques. When hand blows are employed every joint in the finger, hand, and arm is used. Again elasticity is called into play and the techniques are more akin to a wet towel being cracked at an opponent than anything else. A further point is a strong emphasis on Gong-bang-sul or taking the initiative in a conflict. Masters are trained to read hostility in an a d ve rs a r y ’s actions and mannerisms so when he barely begins to prepare to his attack the master has already exploded into action. Another difference is simple rolling techniques are used far more frequently than fancy tumbling tricks as they are mostly useless on the street. Other differences will be discussed in far more detail in a further issue.
