PUBLISHER´S MESSAGE

F

or about 20 years I have belonged to the order Buddhist Chan, Hsu Yun. My relationship with the Master Airr Phanthip the Nak Muay Thai, allowed me to learn a little more about their culture and kindly invited me to celebrate with them the new year. It known as Songkran, which is written in Thai สงกรานต์, is a word of Sanskrit origin (Sankrandhi) which means change or movement. In This context, the meaning implies to the passing and the moving of the sun, the moon and the other planets into one of the zodiacal orbits. And the Grand Songkran Festival falls in Aries Which Indicates the new era of the Thai New Year. Owing to the ancient Indian belief, the Grand Songkran Festival is to be the most Appropriate Thai New Year due to the timing of the best season Which is Known as the spring of India Which comes right after the cold season of winter.

Nak Muay Thai school performed three shows in three different Buddhist temples in the city of Las Vegas, celebrating the new year. I share with you some of the photos that the lens of Martial Science Magazine captured for all of you.

9th MUNICH HALL OF HONOURS On April 22/23rd, about two hundered martial artist could write a new chapter in european martial arts history. The 9th Munoch Hall of Honours took place for the last time at the legendary venue, „The Waldheim Solln“.

2016 HALL OF THE HONOURS MUNICH, GERMANY

But let’s start at the beginning. The Bavarian style Welcome Party at the Munich Hall of Honours was always famous and lots of fun when everybody dressed in „Dirnd’l and Lederhos’n“ the bavarian traditional costumes. All the beautiful woman at the Munich Hall of Honour, a welcome change for the many international guests, that are used to all the „elegant old men“ at most of the other events, really enjoy these outfits and are looking forward to this opertunity to wear them. Cynthia Rothrock buys a Dirnd*l in Munich every year because she likes them so much and her large fan comunnity adores her in it. But this year , promoter Master Gregor Huss went one step further. The welcome party took place at the „Frühlingsfest“ a Octoberfest Typ Spring Fair

and he had reserved seats for his guests at the world famous HIPPODROM Beertent. With more than five thousand people celebrating in cheerful atmosphere and wanton mood, singing and dancing on the tables, fantastic food and bavarian beer this was probaly the largest welcome party ever celebrated. It had been all Cynthia Rothrocks idea to go there, says promoter Gregor Huss, because she had such a great time there with Bianca, Master Huss’s wife the year before and as it turned out it was great fun, not only for her but also for famous, legendary Dr. Robert Altman. Known to his friends as Dr.Bob, he was attending the Munich Hall of Honours for the first time and already then, at the welcome party, said: This is the best event, I`ll be back next year. Great fun also had Wing Chun Legend Samuel Kwok who came back for the third time already and Whu Shu Legend Serge Seguin (for the fifth time) and of course all other guest from arround the world. I dont think I have to mention, that we off course all had to walk across the fair with Cynthia Rothrock, Dr. Bob and many others, where she animated everyone to go on these crazy roller coaster rides. - says Master Huss because nothing is too high or too steep for her to go on!“ JUNE/2016

The following day started with famous seminars with many of the best martial arts instructors, masters and grandmasters. Like every year another highlight in this event. To have a chance to hold a 45 minute clinic and intruduce his style is on the most wanted issues for martial artists. And for those participating in these seminars it is a probably lifetime chance to meet one of these legends of the martial arts and train with them and take the precious pictures together with them or buy some T-shirts or DVDs at their booths. At 4 p.m. The seminars where over and everyone went to their hotels to change into their black tie outfits for the evening extravaganza. This evening gala started with international renown flutist Raphaelle Zaneboni followed by the wonderful, celebratory banquet which agreed by all guest is so far unreached and uncomparably.

2016 HALL OF THE HONOURS MUNICH, GERMANY

It was followed by sensational martial arts demonstration like „The Lan Lung WuShu Xue Yuan Team“ performing wonderful chinese stunts and forms, the „Self Defense Germany Taekwon Do Demo Team“, „The austrian woman Karate world champion team“ and more. Highlight was Grandmaster Samuel Kwoks presentation of a Wing Chun form and oneinch-punch.

Over the years of the Martial Arts, I looked at how martial artists have abused their bodies. How their egos go unchecked and the physical training is more important than good nutrition. Just the blows they take in kumite, breaking or demonstrations can take its toll and lead to permanent injuries. HOW DOES THIS PLAY INTO THE PHILOSOPHY OF BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT? HAVE WE LOST WHAT THE CONCEPT OF HONOR, RESPECT AND INTEGRITY MEAN IN THE MARTIAL ARTS?

Pay attention to how you react to situations, people and how you feel about yourself. Your thoughts will drive you intentions, your choices and your relationships with others. Dare to change that which is not for your best interest. Meditation can be one of your best choices to change your whole being for a more positive life. The main purpose of meditation is to get in touch with one’s higher self or God. Through the practice of meditation, it causes the mind to get quite and release all thoughts so that the connection can be made. In doing so, it will relax the mind so that the information that you really need to make good choices and create peace of mind can be achieved. Your mind connection will hook up with your heart and when it does, they will join with

your higher self and will bring in more love and happiness. The Healing Art of Reiki was founded in Japan in 1938 by Dr. Mako Usui. Reiki Practionars go through an attunement during a ritual to set up the frequency in their body in order to channel the Reiki Energy. Only a Reiki Master Teacher can perform this ceremony. The Practionar channels the life force energy, which is also called, Chi, Ki or Prana, from the source, which is God or the Universe. This energy has an intelligence of its own to heal the body, mind and spirit. Reiki is unique in that it cannot do any harm to the patience or Practionar. Another aspect of Reiki is that, it can be sent to anyone in the world and animals also benefit greatly using this healing system.

Meditation can be one of your best choices to change your whole being for a more positive life.

opportunity to fight, student on student, was a new experience for many and a real challenge. What was learned? Do not get hurt! Many in the military did not receive this training. A medical chit was issued to limit physical training with a simple justification as an out. The pugil stick is a heavily padded rod that is a simulated weapon for training similar to the Japanese bo or staff. It may be marked to indicate which end represents the bayonet and which end represents the rifle butt. The length was supposed to be the size of the combat rifle of the time. To execute bayonet techniques, Soldiers and Marines would hold the rifle in a modified basic warrior stance or ready stance. Left foot forward and right foot back in a fairly wide and long stance. The bayonet blade at the end of the rifle is pointed toward the opponent at all times ready for attack or blocking. All movements always began and ended with this basic stance. Very Structured! The Straight Thrust was the primary technique used in training to disable or kill an opponent. It is the most deadly offensive technique because it causes the most trauma to an opponent. To execute the straight thrust the left leg was lifted and lunged forward off the ball of the right foot while thrusting the blade end of the weapon forward, directly toward and into the opponent. After execution the basic warrior or ready stance is taken. A Slash to the the opponent’s neck. head, or shoulder were practiced. The slash was a technique used if the straight thrust was not applicable or the opponent moved. The slash reminded me of the sword fighting movies I watched as a kid. When it worked it was great! Don’t get shot or a thrust from the enemy. During this period the M14 and M16 were the service rifles. The M14 had a slow recycle time and the M16 failed in the jungle environment. This led to hand to hand encounters for pure survival. Marines and Soldiers were taught to keep their weapon with them at all times. If an individual tries to take their weapon positive control of the weapon or retention may be needed. This was secondary training if time training time allowed. The rifle butt strike was the technique I practiced. LEARNED: Hand to Hand Combat Training and Military Martial Arts Training should be quick and decisive. EARLY MISTAKES: Much of the early Military martial Arts Training was based on sport martial arts. I saw kicks, knees, elbows, and punches that were pulled in training. They will be pulled in combat! You fight like you train. Martial Arts Training must be daily and productive. Time in training leads to survival. OBSERVATION AND COMMENT: Most Military Martial Arts training begins with learning how to get in the perfect stance to strike. Sounds Familiar from my training in the 60’s and my father’s in the 40’s. The enemy does not play by this script. Now we jump to the Modern Military Martial Arts Training as used in the United States Marine Corps.

Teachings of the Budha The Goat That Laughed and Wept Matakabhatta Jataka (Jataka No. 18) (From Jataka Tales of the Buddha, part I. Retold by Ken and Visakha Kawasaki. Copyright@1995.)

O

ne day, while the Buddha was staying in Jetavana, some bhikkhus asked him if there was any benefit in sacrificing goats, sheep, and other animals as offerings for departed relatives. “No, bhikkhus,” replied the Buddha. “No good ever comes from taking life, not even when it is for the purpose of providing a Feast for the Dead.” Then he told this story of the past. Long, long ago, when Brahmadatta was reigning in Baranasi, a brahmin decided to offer a Feast for the Dead and bought a goat to sacrifice. “My boys,” he said to his students, “take this goat down to the river, bathe it, brush it, hang a garland around its neck, give it some grain to eat, and bring it back.” “Yes, sir,” they replied and led the goat to the river. While they were grooming it, the goat started to laugh with a sound like a pot smashing. Then, just as strangely, it started to weep loudly. The young students were amazed at this behavior. “Why did you suddenly laugh,” they asked the goat, “and why do you now cry so loudly?” “Repeat your question when we get back to your teacher,” the goat answered. The students hurriedly took the goat back to their 42

master and told him what had happened at the river. Hearing the story, the master himself asked the goat why it had laughed and why it had wept.

The force of my evil deed is very strong.” The brahmin untied the goat and said to his students, “Don’t allow anyone to harm this goat.” They obediently followed the animal to protect it. After the goat was freed, it began to graze. It stretched out its neck to reach the leaves on a bush growing near the top of a large rock. At that very instant a lightning bolt hit the rock, breaking off a sharp piece of stone which flew through the air and neatly cut off the goat’s head. A crowd of people gathered around the dead goat and began to talk excitedly about the amazing accident. A tree deva [1] had observed everything from the goat’s purchase to its dramatic death, and drawing a lesson from the incident, admonished the crowd: “If people only knew that the penalty would be rebirth into sorrow, they would cease JUNE/2016

INTERVIEW

VALENTIN CABRERA

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO LEARN MARTIAL ARTS? In the ‘70s martial arts in Cuba was an explosion. In Cuban cinemas, many fransesas, Japanese films on the subject that achieve great popularity among the youth were shown. Then with the first Chinese films with Bruce Lee as the main actor, they gave rise to a popular martial arts boom that spread throughout the island. Everything was like a fever that was experienced, so I also joined and enrolled in the National School of Karate Do style Jyoshimon in 1977.

WHO WAS YOUR FIRST MASTER? I had the honor of being a student of the unforgettable master, Domingo Raul Rodriguez Oquendo (Raul Rizo) unfortunately was separated from practice for not think the same ideological manner established by the Castro government. So I was forced to train clandestinely different styles. Until the 90s, I started to systematically train the Taekwondo WTF, after a year I became instructor and in 1993 I got the black belt 1st Dan. My teachers in this modality were Roberto Cardenas Suarez and Sergio Velazco Merida.

HOW WAS YOUR BEGINNING IN TAEKWONDO ITF? In 1994, the ITF Taekwondo began to propagate by the Cuban people. I was interested quickly in this new martial art at that time in Cuba, and simultaneously I trained the two systems of Taekwondo. Led by the GM. Julian Reyna President of the Cuban Federation of Taekwondo ITF, 8th Dan Black Belt. I also had the honor to train twice with the always remembered, General Choi Hong Hi, father and founder of Taekwondo ITF. I received the master Choi technical corrections, wise counsel, and even scolding. I am eternally grateful today and forever. JUNE/2016

HOW IS THE PRACTICE OF MARTIAL ARTS IN CUBA? I come from a country with many needs of all kinds, but with very tenacious, courageous, but above all very sacrificed athletes. The conditions for practicing sports and martial arts are very bad. In all my years of master I could never have a room for practice, We trained on the concrete floor, no water, no protective equipment or uniforms. The last classes that I taught in Cuba were always confronting us in all kinds with weather and adversities park. But thanks to this experinces we have developed our skills and courage in martial arts. MASTER YOU CURRENTLY HAVE 66 YEARS. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO LOOK SO YOUNG? At 66 years of my life practicing martial arts has been a blessing of the Almighty (God) for giving me the strength of character to face life and the constant practice of martial arts with their physical, mental exercises and spiritual. I think my physical condition is a reflection of my spiritual training. The practice of Yoga and Reiki help to our body, mind and spirit obtain harmonious balance. Also a good nutrition and proper care of our body is very important to improve the quality of life.
