NEWS Business Model background paper for <IR> (Integrated Reporting) Current business model reporting is inconsistent, both in terms of uptake and scope. Uptake appears to be influenced by the presence of regional legislation, corporate governance codes and listing requirements. Scoping inconsistencies are linked to mixed interpretations of what, exactly, constitutes a business model. This Background Paper for <IR> (Integrated Reporting) explores and reconciles divergent approaches in business model reporting with the aim of reaching a common, widely-accepted definition of the business model for use in <IR>. This paper is jointly authored on behalf of the IIRC by CIMA, PwC and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

A journey of culture change CIMA recently held a lecture entitled 'A journey of culture change' with our partners Tomorrow’s Company at top law firm Linklaters. The keynote speech was delivered by Dick Olver, Chairman of BAE Systems, who spoke about the near decade-long journey of culture change he has led at BAE Systems. Dick argued that the path to affirming the highest standards of corporate governance is a long and at times arduous road. Few FTSE 100 firms have undertaken transformative initiatives as robust as BAE Systems has pursued over the past decade to realise that goal. Today, BAE Systems is recognised for applying the most stringent anti-corruption and compliance standards, not just of any defence company, but across the industry at large. It was ranked fourth out of 129 companies in Transparency International's 2012 defence industry anti-corruption index.

HONG KONG PAST EVENTS Joint CPD networking seminar – Accounting and Financial Dispute Resolution Mediation is a voluntary, non-binding, private dispute resolution process in which a neutral person, the mediator, helps the parties to reach their own negotiated settlement agreement. The mediator has no power to impose a settlement. His/Her function is to overcome any impasse settlement and encourage the parties to reach an amicable settlement. Mediation has become more common in Hong Kong after the city’s civil justice reform in 2009; lawyers are now required to advise clients in dispute resolution to try mediation before proceedings with litigation. As Hong Kong companies transact with Mainland China more frequent, many commercial disputes may have impact on the company’s liability or financial risk. Professional who possess accounting / financial knowledge, coupled with mediation technique will have a great competitive edge if asked to resolve such disputes. The anticipated need for more dispute resolution professionals have brought about a boom in the number of people seeking to be trained as mediators over recent years. We were please to organise a joint seminar with CPA Australia and HKU SPACE, and invited Mr Wui-Kei, Roy, the Director of Hong Kong Institute of Mediation to introduce how an accountant-mediator can enhance their business and resolve disputes over figure. This seminar attracted 70 CIMA members and over 200 participants. If you missed the seminar or would like to know more about accounting and financial dispute Resolution, HKU SPACE now offers an Executive Diploma in Accounting and Financial Dispute Resolution. It provides an all-round training in commercial dispute resolutions with special focus on accounting and finance. It equips students with mediation technique and specialized accounting and financial dispute resolution knowledge.
