Spotlight Croft Additive Manufacturing Ltd Tomorrow’s Manufacturing Today – Metal 3D Printing We’ve heard it before. A new technology comes along that is going to revolutionise the world of industrial manufacturing. However, Additive Manufacturing, shortened to AM or sometimes known as 3D printing , is already being touted as the revolution that will change manufacturing in the same way that the world-wide-web changed our ability to access information. Most of us have now seen some of the examples and applications of AM. The recent news reports about 3D printing guns at home has raised the profile of the subject in the eyes of the general public. However, the industry has been around for many years and originated from the development of Rapid Prototyping which was first commercialised in the late 1980’s. The technology has taken 25 years of development before it has reached the level of manufacturing focused industry that we are witnessing today. Commercialisation of the technology has developed in two key areas. Firstly, the plastic based industry now has a number of techniques for producing parts depending on the cost or quality desired by the user. It is now easier, quicker and more efficient to create certain products locally, often using desktop machines, than relying on the mass market to provide high volume consumer products that large companies believe that consumers need. Maplins have recently entered the consumer end of this market and are taking pre-orders for desktop plastic 3D printers for £699.99. The days of us all printing our own phone covers and children’s toys might be some way off, yet we are now on that path. The metals based industry has developed differently, partly because of the greater operating complexity of the processes. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is one such process where metal powder (stainless steel, titanium and cobalt chrome for example) is laid down in very fine layers on a machine plate and a high powered laser is then used to melt and fuse the powder particles together (and to the layer underneath) only where the material is required to create the final part. The result is a process where components can be formed in ways that have not been possible using conventional manufacturing techniques. Many complex assemblies are currently formed from several components which are attached together. This can create problems for reliability of the final part. Imagine a component that can be manufactured using complex internal geometry, such as internal cooling or fluid transfer tubes. What about the advantages that can come from reducing the weight of a component by having hollow structures or adding strengthening features only where required. David Searle, General Manager of Croft Additive Manufacturing Ltd said “We are seeing more and more customers wanting metal based complex components that can only be produced using AM technology”. AM is still only viable for low volume manufacture. The nature of the process is unlikely to be able to compete on cost for higher manufacturing volumes. But for low quantities, 1 to 100 parts, AM can be cheaper and quicker because there is no need for capital investment in traditional tooling. Croft Additive Manufacturing Ltd can be found at www.additive-manufacture.co.uk or contacted directly on sales@croftam.co.uk.

CENTURY CEMENT PROVES THE BENEFITS OF REVOLVO SRB SPLIT ROLLER BEARINGS IN THE CEMENT INDUSTRY The abrasive dust which is ever present in cement production plants means that bearing life is notoriously short due to particle ingress causing lubricant contamination and wear damage. Century Cement found that the total life cycle of the original equipment white metal bearings on its raw mill motor drives was becoming so poor, that it was willing to invest in completely new drive systems, if a lower maintenance more cost effective motor bearing solution could not be found. Fortunately Revolvo was able to offer a long-life low maintenance SRB split roller bearing solution. Century Cement is part of the BK Birla Group of Companies, a leading Indian conglomerate. The plant is located in Baikunth, in the Indian district of Raipur, and is capable of producing 2.1million tonnes of cement per annum. The company places a strong focus on plant efficiency so when it was discovered that OE white metal bearings on a 2000kW induction motor were regularly failing the company decided to look for an alternative solution.

Factory Fittings ACC FLOORING

Regents Car Park Receives 100% Recycling We have recently undertaken a full car park installation to include all resin floor coating, floor demarcation and signage. The project was scheduled for 10 days; however due to the hard work of the Contracts team, the project was completed in 7 days, to the delight of the Main Contractor. A flooring system was specified, however as the product was manufactured from outside the UK and would take at least 3 weeks to obtain, we successfully changed the material to one that only had to travel around 100 miles, to the delight of all. We had to work against the clock and indeed work around other trades, sometimes working into the night to allow areas to be handed back the next morning. No Allowance had been made for anti-slip so we demonstrated the need for anti-slip on all areas where there was potential for slips. The demarcation was also redesigned by our team to ensure it was installed to allow for the optimum amount of car parking spaces and allowing for Disabled and Motor-Cycle parking. The client selected a special colour from the demarcation, which our supplier colour matched to the delight of the customer. As the concrete was originally finished in such a way that the slip resistant properties were actually in the finish, by the way of a “brush finish, the concrete had to be diamond ground to reduce all the high spots and provide a surface that could be treated with a high build resin coating. We achieved a recycle figure of 100% on the works and all waste was removed legally by our own transport. The client was overjoyed with the total project package we delivered and since led to further orders within the group. The project was completed earlier than planned, on budget and the carbon footprint was not challenged due using UK manufacturers. The client has a car park that is safe, sustainable and will complement the very high standards that are set and maintained at Park Row.

NEW ATEX APPROVED RTD SLIDEWIRE TRANSMITTER FROM STATUS Status Instruments has launched an ATEX / IECEx approved rail mounted ‘smart’ transmitter which converts a signal from RTD, slidewire or thermocouple sensors into an industry standard (4 to 20) mA loop powered output. Available in single or dual channel versions, other sensor characteristics or the user’s own 22 point linearization characteristics (for slidewire or linear resistance) can be downloaded into the product enabling the user to adapt it to a specific application. PC configuration (in the safe area) allows the user to select sensor type, range, filter, tag, units and error signal without the need for calibration equipment. In addition, the user may read live process data when connected to the PC, allowing for sensor offset and output alignment where the user can calibrate the output signal to the actual process and therefore help reduce system errors. If required the desired range can be specified at the time of the order, removing the need for configuration. For more information visit www.status.co.uk

XJTAG recently launched a new product, XJInvestigator, an advanced analysis and debug tool for use in the production of electronics. XJInvestigator is available as part of XJTAG’s latest v3.1 JTAG boundary scan software release. XJTAG’s tools are used across the product life cycle from development and prototyping into production. XJInvestigator combines an easy-to-use testing environment with advanced fault-finding and debug capabilities, so engineers can diagnose boards which fail a production-line test. See the difference immediately on a test screen when you toggle otherwise inaccessible pins under BGAs; accurately pinpoint and solve problems using the layout viewer and pin mapping capabilities. ‘With the launch of XJInvestigator, XJTAG has extended the test capabilities available to engineers’, commented Simon Payne, CEO. ‘XJTAG focuses on providing solutions that can help speed up fault diagnostics. XJInvestigator has a simple pass/fail test capability that can be broken down and analysed in detail. This makes testing easy and informative - you can not only find faults easily but also diagnose the source of the problem.’ XJTAG has also created a Fault Dictionary which can provide step by step instructions in fault diagnostics. Other updates include improvements to the code editor functionality and user permissions, and make for easy tracking and auditing. If your organisation is looking to get the most out of boundary scan, XJTAG can provide a fully-featured 30-day trial, including an optional free board set up, at no cost to you. mk Conveyor Technology helps ensure Baby Strollers are up to the Job! mk were asked to design a test rig for baby strollers that would satisfy the test criteria of the TUV safety regulations. This was achieved by simulating different ground conditions with standardised obstacles for testing baby strollers. The adjustable speed of the conveyor belt should be up to 10 km/h (170 m/min), which corresponds to a moderate jogging speed. The total load is a maximum of 150 kg. Features of this test rig include the following: mk’s GUF-P 2004 conveyor was equipped with a timing belt drive and balanced rollers. A wire hook connection ensures easy belt change. Standardised obstacles were screwed onto the belt. To damp strong vibrations (that occur through cleats) it was necessary to support conveyor belt on metal vibration buffers. A switch-off safeguard was implemented via magnetic pull switches. This TUV compliant Baby stroller test fixture including guarding was produced using predominantly systems or modules within the mk profile and conveyor ranges. To see this unique baby stroller test rig in action visit: youtu.be/Ll1hpbdb75E Or to find out more about the extensive range of mk conveyor technology visit: www.mk-group.com/en/products/ conveyor-technology.html
