no paper qualifications, after booking and paying to a center which advertised itself as a c&g examination center, after arriving we were told that actually we couldn't do our exams there and would have to arrange then ourselves elsewhere. No assistance was offered so as I had taken unpaid leave to attend this training, at the end of it I went back to work and apprenticed with the groomer at the kennels where I worked. Is one of the reasons why I feel rather bitter about being told that I should now spent the same amount of money again to complete this process

Do feel that we do need regulation but timed served experience should be included not just City & Guilds qualifications as job life experience is very important. Many good groomers have come via on the job training and may have not gone on to qualifications

I am always trying to improve and attend seminars when I can, although I have not yet taken C&G I do intend to, just very difficult as there is no where near me and the training is pricey... I think instead of weighting requirements on the C&G qualifications a groomers ability should be assessed by an independant body. I am sure there are good dog groomers without C&G (like myself!) and also not so good ones who have it!

It is most definitely needed in order to protect dogs from untrained people that set up as groomers. I myself as an "unqualified" groomer would be made unemployed as regulation would most probably mean only C&G and above groomers would be permitted to trade. The cost of the training would make it impossible for me, unless there were some sort of concessions for groomers like myself.

I do not necessarily think that a Level 3 qualification should be required but that the groomer should be able to groom to that standard and should be assessed to prove it. A general knowledge of H&S canine behaviour, anatomy and first aid etc should also be assessed.

I definitely think that those learning grooming should have a longer period of training and a thorough understanding. I think this would help students be more aware of the the 'what can go wrongs' and moreso 'what can be done to prevent them'. Its a hard job but very rewarding. There should be a topic on the course about examples where things could go wrong to make dog groomers aware of safety and respect to the pet throughout.

There are a number of online grooming courses which I feel may cause issues as you really need to get your hands-on experience to decide if it really is the right career for you. Most of my dogs I groom to suit the owners not breed standard and I would worry that an examination would work against me.

I come from a very doggy background so I possibly had a lot more idea than some.the other girl in my training group thought every fuffy dog was a Lhasa!!! (and that was at the end of the cousre). I don't feel CG is a benchmark at all for the regulation of groomers. Especially when there are MAJOR differences in what isbeign taught concerning health and welbeing of dogs with in a groomers care.

I would welcome regulation but working on my own and being part-time cost would be a consideration. My primary concern is how dogs are handled. Some groomers are overly rough how can this be regulated just because you have a qualification in grooming does not prove handling in an empathetic manner!!

I would love to do my city and guilds but the cost is a problem as is the cost of ongoing training which i would love to be able to afford. Obtaining goid quality dogs for your exams is also a problem.

This was a difficult questionnaire for me to complete as I will not start commercially grooming until May however I thought I would complete it based on what I considered the experience I needed before I felt confident to let myself loose on other people's dogs. Also feel that regulation is necessary if we are ever to drive standards, get professional recognition and be able reach a consensus on a minimum charges for grooming.

With regard to qualifications not everyone lives near a training school and sometimes having one-toone training and instruction from a qualified groomer can be more valuable than a certificate. I'm all for regulating the industry - but it should be over a period of time for each groomer bearing in mind newly qualified/beginners will take time to built up the confidence and skills of an experienced groomer. Also taking into account we are still building up a stock of equipment, paying insurance and building up a client list. But we should have nothing to hide if we want to provide a reputable and trustworthy service. The public should also be educated too, they are very quick to critise but not to praise!

I think it won't stop anything as even with a qualification accidents can still happen. Having a qualification doesn't mean you have common sense so I feel its one of those situations where you're damned if you do ( I can't afford the qualification or time off work to do it) and damned if you don't because ones like me who have been doing this for 20yrs or more will be less likely to appease the public now if we have no peice of paper to say we can groom their dog. I think unless the fees come down for those who've earned their place in the industry the hard way with time off their own backs then I feel the older generation are most likely to get out of grooming altogether than to pay over ÂŁ800 to do a job they already know how to do. If the cost came down to say ÂŁ200 figure I think more old schoolers like myself would be more than happy to get with the times to save the industry

I would never treat dogs the way I saw them being treated in that shop. Learned a lot more from people showing their dogs.

It worries me that people can do a weekend course and then call themselves dog groomers, also when I worked in kennels learning my trade the youngsters from the local college did work experience with us and they could do a labrador for their grooming exam!!!

Qualifications don't necessarily make a good groomer but I think you need experience before starting up independently. It's difficult to regulate a service such as grooming, the amount of red tape and excessive health and safety risk analysis which regulation could bring could end up being more trouble than its worth.

I can see the benefit in taking the City and Guilds qualifications if you are a new groomer starting out.

There was not the same emphasis in gaining these qualifications when I started out in 2004. Clearly there are a good number of groomers out there, like myself, who have gained their skill through experience and have a solid client base as a result. It has to be considered that a newly qualified C&G student is not going to have the same ability as another groomer who has been working for years without taking C&G qualifications. Too much emphasis on the current C&G qualifications could present a misleading message. Perhaps the C&G qualifications should be reviewed? From what I can gather when I have investigated what is required, there is too much emaphasis on the showing side of the dog world. Most average dogs do not have the conformation favoured in the showing sector the basis of which sets "breed standard". As we all know too well as groomers you are faced with clip offs and utility cuts on a regular basis. A good eye for what best suits the everyday dogs is required. An understanding of canine anatomy, health and wellbeing and canine first aid are all also beneficial which would suggest a rethink on the qualification structure as a whole should it be implemented into regulation within the industry. I personally have undertaken additonal qualifications in Animal Care, First Aid and currently studying for a Canine Behaviour Diploma. When I was studying my animal care qualification it addressed running a grooming salon, hygiene, health and safety as part of the course.

Maybe the point is not just about continuing personal development for the groomer but a more structured regulation of the business premises? I do feel though that it is important to raise the standards within the industry which is why SPGN is a great thing and a more structured form of regulation will hopefully benefit the good grooming businesses out there and remove the less reputable ones.

It depends on what they mean by regulation. If it costs money then it will put smaller part time businesses out of work due to cost. Long term groomers have survived successfully with no dire effects over the years, but now so called training academies are churning out so many groomers that the industry is flooded with poor quality grooming 'experts'. There should be a level of regulation, but if they start imposing restrictions like ' the dog has to be in and out in 90 minutes' - then this is going to result in poor quality grooming and accidents. With the best will in the world, a lone groomer with a badly behaved Cocker Spaniel groomed every 4 months who hates the blaster - is going to struggle! I think the Academies need regulating to ensure they're producing groomers who are of the right standard, put the onus on the ones who are making the money!

After owning a licenced kennels I'm not sure just what grooming would gain as people unlicensed people still kennel and look after others dogs and even licenced kennels did things they shouldn't , I'm using kennels as an example as I don't think the licensing made any difference to how I looked after the dogs, my kids worked in the industry at licenced establishments only to find they put dogs in cages over the Xmas period when full so I'm really not sure what good licensing groomers would do , just more money to pay out to council :(

I am worried as to who would regulate the industry as the PCTA isn't worth the paper I wipe my bum on! Nor are the RSPCA, who are quick to criticise groomers but VERY reluctant to help us when we have a neglected dog walk into our salon. I believe that C&G level 2 should be a pre requisite to the level 3 intro as I would've found going straight into the level 3 without any prior experience a struggle. I am also bothered by the fact that some satellite centres tell level 2 students that they are fully qualified to become independent groomers when they haven't been showing how to scissor a dogs head let alone anything else, and these students are setting up locally and causing lots of problems.

I dont agree with the exams now i wouldnt agree to do it mainly cos i feel its a stressful situation for the dogs and actually none of my dogs i groom are up to the standard required. there does need to be some sort of regulations but how this is done i dont know. i attend regular grooming competitions and talks to gain knowledge i have been attacked and spat at by members of the grooming industry which for 10years stopped me going but i've raised above it now

Some people are just not academic enough to sit exams but are extremely good at grooming.

Something needs to change, but what? I've had fully qualified girls and had to sack them because of lack of quality and care of their work. Students think they can set up after level 2.. I didn't do my exams but I worked for someone for over 2years before I started doing clients dogs I had good grounding. I care about my work and what people think.

I felt ready to start after level 2 - I had an excellent tutor and have my own dogs, but I know there is a lot of feeling amongst other groomers that this is not "qualified". It depends on the individual.

Regarding licensing - I think a lot of councils will just use it to raise money and not regulate. Also just because groomers have many years as a groomer, it doesn't make them good or kind to the dogs they groom - hope this is helpful

I am new to the grooming world, and have worked in salons in my local area whilst building up my business and of course my speed. As a newbie I have been somewhat shocked at the lack of knowledge in some of the salons I have worked in and at the level of quality of the grooms, together with appalling handling, especially of puppies. I think regulation would help weed out the "cowboy" groomers. People grooming dogs professionally must be able to achieve a certain standard. However, I can see how regulation may seem good on paper, but I think it would be very difficult to put into practice.

This may be contentious, but, the grooming industry appears to me to be quite bitchy at times and this is not good for independent examination or feelings of fairness. The time it would take to see every groomer would be prohibitive, also I do think that EVERY one should be seen so all those working from garden sheds etc. I dont think that people should be allowed to be passed just because they have worked for a long time in the industry. Its a massive undertaking, good luck

Still in training but do friends/family dogs within reason. Worked with a groomer & kennels & vets for 10+ yrs. As a newbie, with little money to start up, I still feel regulation is absolutely necessary.

Training is essential. Even just the handling aspect of dogs has to be learnt before attempting. The number of new untrained groomers is worrying. I am very realistic about my start up, despite 10+ yrs experience as bather/dryer i do not expect to start up without 'proper' training! Tina.W

One of the things which I feel is notably lacking with using the c&g qulifications as the standard is the physical handling and understanding of canine behaviour. There is no shortcut to gaining that skill as it takes experience so any regulation would need to incorporate this. Personally I don't feel that the c&g as it stands at the moment looks like a guarantee of any level of quality either in groom or handling

I have not done any of the qualifications,but i was taught over a very long period of time (years) and i take the time to finish a dog of properly,where i see lots of new groomers now that have just come out of there training from a local collage & just do not have a clue.they then are buying dvd's to help them,they do not clean out the dogs ears properly ,trim pads,cut nails,and then they are charging people top prices for very shoddy work.going to a collage or grooming school & getting a piece of paper on it does not always mean a person is a good groomertThe girl that is teaching at the collage near me,well i don't no how she got the job,the students i have spoken to do not feel they have learned anything,so then they do not feel very confident to work on there own.

I was trained on the job by a show quality groomer with over 30 years experience n I already had extensive experience handling animals, that being said, I didn't feel trully competent until id been grooming full time for about two years. So while I believe U can learn skills doing a course, knowing HOW doesn't necessarily translate to DOING without adequate hands on experience. N while I believe the industry needs regulation, when trades become regulated the criteria often becomes ridiculous n far removed from actually doing the job well.

I dont have a problem with regulation but I am not entirely sure how training standards can be enforced. While doing my own training, although it was to C&G standard, the option to do C&G was just not possible. At the time there was no facility to do this in Scotland and my circumstances didnt allow me to travel to England - let alone have the 3 required breeds available to me back then.

Although the training is now available, I would prefer to see it more available through colleges as I feel that some of the groomers who offer it use it as a real money making exercise (using clients dogs to train groomers with etc).

I feel that regulation, although a good idea in theory, would cause unnecessary stress to most groomers who find the examination process and/or shop inspections etc stressful, expensive and time consuming. Many owners do not ask even for proof of training and qualifications so why should we have to go through tighter regulations and stricter controls for those who have no interest in the first place. I do however feel that a register, such as those for vets and vet nurses of all practicing and employed groomers with their experience and qualifications would be very helpful and would enable any authorities to keep track of who is operating. A small fee to be part of this register could be applied.

I do beleive there is a necessity to police/license the Grooming industry,the industry has grown at such a pace, the worst education of the groomer being the internet course, this I feel is a frightful notion, though I myself do not have any C&G Qualifications, I feel the C&G qualifications are somewhat not worth the paper they are written on, I have in my time interviewed and employed C&G qualified groomers, who unfortunatly are unable to work to the high standard and quality grooms to which I require and expect, It would appear the C&G qualifications are rather lacking in standards (depending on where the exam is taken) A better level of grooming needs to be established to make the City & Guilds qualifications stand for something of value and not something to be given out just because someone has paid a fee to attend a grooming course, I have 22yrs experience in the industry I employ 4 people, we attend regular seminars/workshops and encourage further education in our industry, I would welcome some form of Licensing...

Firstly can I say I would have liked the addition of "grandfathered in" being possible for the last answer, but with a simplified test taken, just as all Pet shops now have to take level 3 NVQ, in animal care BEFORE they are issued with a licence to handle animals. Though already, because it is a work and home based course that the applicant completes I have already been told of how those who have already taken the course, are helping those taking to course to complete it, so in truth, those who need to take it are cheating their way through it. This should be tightened up. As for grooming, ALL those wanting to operate as a Groomer should have to prove by the way of qualifications they are capable and qualified to perform the job and the A. Pass ALL levels of the city & guilds BEFORE they can apply for insurance and a Licence B. Insurance companies should insist that Proof of qualifications must be presented and confirmed with PCT/City & Guilds BEFORE an insurance policy can be issued.

C Both Qualifications and proof of insurance have to be in place and checked by council, and the premises inspected, as they do with all other professions handling animals, BEFORE a licence is issued. Those Groomers who for various reasons cannot take the City & guilds who have been grooming for longer than 20 years, should be able to prove their competency by way of a written test, and practical test. At basic charge as I feel just allowing them to continue, may be allowing bad habits or lack of knowledge and new practises to continue. I personally know of 2 cases where even City & Guilds level 3 exams were taken and passed, but the people concerned said they were not going to change the way they worked as they didn't have time for Big Brother, and all the so called regulations and advisories. If they did get inspected, then they'd worry about it then, and blag their way out of it, as it was too hard to work doing all they say is required. So you see, even with taking the City & Guilds exams there are people who will just not bother to take all on board and just continue in their own sweet "cheap" "disrespectful" way. Policing is required in some form. Years ago, the plan was to use retired Groomers fully aware of working practises to do spot checks. Even the councils at the time agreed with this as it relieved their health Officers of the “spot check� and their wages were far higher than those offered to the retired Groomers, from specific divided areas across the UK, Wales, etc.

Regulation in grooming is needed because so many people just set themselves up to make a fast buck, ie they buy a van build a website and away they go shaving off and traumatising dogs...it's this type of groomer that needs to be targeted but as with all regulation there will be no allowances for those whose experience and skills have earned them a good reputation and a good living...they will be made to jump thru hoops along with everybody else..and every year the goalposts will be moved and more training will be required until they are deemed to be fully qualified and competent ...it's what happens in every profession!'

I think the industry does need regulating and I feel the intensive quick learn courses need to be cut back on. I also believe that to complete a C&G part of it should be you have to do an apprenticeship in a salon before you can set up by yourself.

Regulation would be a great thing **IF** it's regulated by professional groomers, NOT by the government or other idiots who have NO clue what we do in our daily work!

Think people need serious dog behaviour/handling training as well as grooming before starting, as feedback i get, this is a serious issue that pet owners seem to have from previous groomers. I needed refresher training on Health n Safety aspects before starting my business which was very helpful. (though all my work is in peoples homes)

I think there should be some form of licensing or overall certification. The problem is this would have to be within each state, making testing, accredited schools etc (ie like cosmotologists). Established groomers with at least 5 years of experience should be grandfathered, groomers with less experience should pass the test. The cost of states setting this up would be astronomical and the cost of liscensing may be too costly for small business groomers.

I trained under a CMG years back. my license is under the vet's I work for. I have since trained 6 groomers and working on my 7th..

I think well established groomers should have their work and techniques assessed rather than demanding specific qualifications, however new groomers just starting need to reach a certain level before being allowed to practice alone.

The main benefit of regulation within our industry would be to reassure the public who use our service that we meet a set standard. And that we have the confidence of a seal of approval as a support.

I would like to see some regulation but I don't think it would stop back street grooming as naive owners would still seek out these people to save a a buck

Should be regulation but uncertain how this could actively be maintained effectively and to what end.

The main reason for me is to weed out poor/dangerous groomers, either in the way they operate or the use of equipment unfit/unsafe for purpose.

I feel that 'regulation' of some type would be beneficial to everyone involved on grooming (groomers, pet owners and if course pets) However, I strongly disagree that if you are not a 'qualified' groomer that you can't be a competent, safe and good groomer.
