Welcome to the February issue of in.Design.

in this issue, we examine interior design in the public sector and on page 11 Mark Ludmon takes a look at a couple of projects which prove that innovation and creative design need not be left out of the equation when projects are funded with public money.

in.Her Life features Dorothee Junkin, designer and founder of Architecta Ltd, who has described a busy seven day week! she clearly loves what she does – turn to page 31 to see what she’s up to.

The British institute of interior Design has had an incredibly busy start to the new year. BiiD has announced an exciting one day conference entitled ‘Celebrating British Design’ which will take place in June (page 19), where it will also announce the Honorary Fellowships for 2012 to recognise those who have had a profound impact on the interior design profession (page 47).

With the weather still so mild, our thoughts have already turned to the great outdoors; for the outdoor furniture industry, sustainable and weatherproof are the buzz words for this season. The Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association tells us about its new Made Aware scheme which covers sustainability issues, and gloster focuses on the trend for all-year-round furniture which can withstand the wet British winters. Turn to page 49 to find out more.

And finally a good-bye… this is my last issue as editor of in.Design. i’m handing over the reins to Mark Ludmon, who’s been the Managing editor on the magazine since september last year. Although i am sad to leave in.Design, i’ve had a great time working on it and i know that i’m leaving it in very safe hands with Mark. i wish you all lots of success for the future.

rank Lissauer, managing director of Franklite Limited, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lighting Association. Peter Hunt, CeO of the Lighting Association said: “Frank Lissauer was a popular choice for this award, not only for his long service in the industry, but for his unwavering support for the decorative lighting industry as a whole.” Frank set up Franklite in January 1973 and

Frank Lissauer with his Lighting Association award

today the company has a reputation for quality of product and service. After nearly 40 years in the industry, Frank is the longest serving director on the Lighting Association Council of Management. This award was given following a vote by fellow members of the Association which makes it particularly special to Frank as his work within the industry, and with the Lighting Association, is done out of a passion for lighting. This token of recognition was a total surprise to him and one of which he is justly proud.

aving worked on public-sector projects such as schools, colleges and youth training centres, Liverpool-based interiors and fit-out consultancy Team a go-go understands the importance of balancing visual impact with value for money and social impact – key factors when public money is involved. This is demonstrated in its work on The Fuse in Partington in Trafford in west Manchester – a £4 million scheme supported by the Big Lottery Fund under the MyPlace youth centre programme. Part of the Trafford Youth Village, it is more than just a youth centre but a centre for the performing arts, sports, recreation and business with a focus on people aged 11 to 19. The project was led by ellis Williams Architects (eWA), working with BAM Construction, structural engineers Doyle Partnership, mechanical and electrical consulting engineers steven Hunt & Associates and quantity surveyor AA Projects. Team a go-go was appointed to consult with young people and design and implement the interiors. “Team a go-go is renowned for emphasising the effect that good design can have on service delivery,” points out managing director Kate stewart.

The Fuse

Designer sam Harry adds: “Our challenge was to create a space suitable for young people but not childlike. We worked with the client group to develop ways in which the building could generate income from hires from businesses and the community.” in partnership with eWA, Team a go-go challenged some of the space divisions and reconfigured the layout to enable easy supervision of a man “chill zone”, removing barriers between staff and young people. t

12 : in.seCTOR

Canada Water Library The Fuse s “Our workshops with the young people found that most youth centres are good at providing activities for boys but that girls want a quieter space to sit and chat, so we created a bespoke seating pod which gives the feel of being in a smaller lounge space but is open enough for discrete supervision,” sam explains. The key architectural theme to the building is that it is a series of cubes thrown in the air and dropped to form a collection of zones. These zones are coded on the outside by their different colours and textures, and the interior scheme extended this use of colour to match different activities whether they be chill zone, sports zone, performance zone or admin zone. The meeting room is easily transformed at night into a space for young people by

the specification of a folding table and luxury chairs. The room has a 3D TV and the storage wall conceals large bean bags that are brought out when the table is put away. A full-length curtain can be drawn round the room at night instead of closing the bifolding wall, making a more intimate space. Other parts of The Fuse include a dance studio, a recording studio, practice rooms, sports facilities, a theatre and a café. A “green room” attached to the performance space was developed as a space where young people can learn skills such as hairdressing and beauty. Team a go-go worked in partnership with the architects and contractor on furniture procurement, with the young people and staff consulted through workshops. This led to specifying colours and finishes including flooring, lighting, walls, washrooms, lockers, acoustic treatments and loose and fixed items such as bespoke shop-fit elements. “Working with a small budget, our design

team have met the clients’ aspirations and created a vibrant and sustainable environment for the whole community,” Kate adds. A more large-scale community project has been completed in Rotherhithe, east London. Canada Water Library was built by southwark Council with £14.1 million of public money, using one of the world’s top architects, Piers gough, partner at CZWg. The stunning inverted pyramid shape of the building means the interior is far larger than the restricted footprint. From the doubleheight atrium, a central spiral staircase leads up to the main library floor, lined with timber that combines linear and circular designs. On the library floor, the children and young people’s areas have been designed as flexible spaces adaptable for different activities. On the ground floor, there is a café to encourage people to enter the building from the new plaza developed as part of the area’s regeneration. t

K

arndean Designflooring, the world’s leading supplier of luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), is being increasingly specified for newbuild and refurbishment private and public healthcare projects.

Karndean’s six ranges offer a variety of light, mid and dark wood and stone effect vinyl planks and tiles which designers are finding invaluable when developing interior schemes for healthcare applications. With durability, cleanliness and ease of maintenance all taken care of, Karndean Designflooring is being used to create practical and attractive environments that benefit both patients and staff. From waiting areas and corridors to family rooms and private wards, design flooring like Karndean’s Van gogh range gives

designers the freedom to combine style and functionality to create workable healthcare spaces. Paul Barratt, Commercial sales Director for Karndean Designflooring comments: “Designers are quickly realising that floorcoverings like LVT are the perfect choice for hospitals, care homes and day centres. Whilst sheet materials are used for operating theatres and other sterile areas, the patient and visitor oriented rooms can really benefit from the warm and inviting tones of a wood or stone effect flooring which can make the space feel less clinical. “There are numerous practical benefits to using Karndean Designflooring in communal areas, bedrooms, corridors and waiting areas. it is quiet underfoot and has a durable wear of between 0.55 and 0.7mm which

means it can withstand the wheels of hospital beds and trolleys. “Care homes in particular have traditionally been fitted with carpet tiles. The fibrous nature of this material can harbour damp from spillages, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Designflooring helps to control bacteria hotspots underfoot, giving staff an easy to clean surface which makes infection control as simple as possible.” By mixing the textures and colours of two or more luxury vinyl tiles, designers can implement zoning in large open spaces such as waiting areas, as well as using strips of colour to create path finding systems along corridors.

Canada Water Library with iguzzini pendants and LeD strips s The building also features a 150-seater theatre, meeting rooms and other flexible spaces. “The library is an indoor public space open to everyone, where you find wonderful things you weren’t necessarily looking for,” Piers says. “it is a futuristic Pandora’s box of possibilities.” CZWg worked on the interior design with companies such Junckers and The Access Flooring Company on flooring, ironmongery2u, and ecophon for the main acoustic ceiling. The café is the work of Barista Design, which installed a solid steel chassis clad in polished stainless steel, manufactured in italy, with a 50mm granite worktop and a Corian front. CZWg worked with Rainbow Design on furniture throughout the building, including the shelving. it supplied bespoke loose furniture such as desks, sofas, coffee tables, stacking chairs, flip-top tables as well as high tables and bar stools. it matched the bold colours of the flooring and décor, with upholstery ranging from purples and blues to shades of green.

Lighting was the work of consultants Hoare Lea, which attempted to use natural light from the windows above as much as possible, particularly for the central spiral staircase. “We wanted the materials and structure to be the feature. We looked to light it in the most simplistic and clean way we can,” explains partner Dominic Meyrick. However, he says it was decided to enhance the natural daylight with fluorescent oval iguzzini pendants providing a uniform white glow. suspended by four wires running through a conduit, the lights appear to pull down the curved ceiling. Other innovations include LeD strips embedded in the bookcases that wash light down the front of each cabinet, illuminating each of the book spines. “We wanted to create a bit of ambience and drama,” Dominic adds. The lighting design means it has achieved an incredible level of energy efficiency with less than two watts per square metre – an important objective for southwark Council. “We managed to keep it to that and still make it look funky,” Dominic adds.

New BIID conference celebrates British design The BIID honours our country’s excellence in the field of design with the launch of a new conference.

T

he British institute of interior Design (BiiD) is launching an inaugural, one day conference event entitled “Celebrating British Design”. Taking place at RiBA’s London HQ, Portland Place, London, on 21st June 2012, ahead of the BiiD AgM, the conference will feature an inspiring line-up of headline speakers and experts drawn from right across the design spectrum. “The eyes of the world will be firmly focused on Britain in 2012 thanks to the Olympics, Paralympics and the golden Jubilee,” says BiiD President, Diana Yakeley. “in this celebration year, the BiiD believes it is entirely appropriate that we honour this country’s excellence in the field of design. “Celebrating British Design” will provide us with just that platform and recognise the varied and enduring contribution to the spatial designs that we create for our clients in residential, commercial, public and hospitality projects.”

“Celebrating British Design” will take members on a journey of British design, looking at the impact of its success in the world of interiors, and exploring what the future holds. More details on confirmed speakers and topics will be revealed shortly. Following the conference, the BiiD will host its AgM when the work of the institute during the course of the year is reviewed and outlines plans for the year ahead announced. All BiiD members are welcome to attend. For the first time the conference and AgM will take place in the Jarvis Memorial Hall, RiBA’s dedicated venue for large conferences, located on the lower ground floor at 66 Portland Place. Mark Ludmon looks at the range of creative and practical designs available for outside lighting

M

agical fields of light transformed the lawns at the Holburne Museum in Bath for six weeks until early January. Fibre optic stems lay dormant during the daytime but at night they flowered with gentle rhythms of light. it was the latest incarnation of an installation created by lighting designer Bruce Munro who first devised the Field of Light for the Brilliant! exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 2004.

Bruce Munro’s Field of Light at Holburne Museum

Further versions appeared such as a 10-acre display at Long Knoll Field in Wiltshire and at the eden Project in Cornwall in 2008 and 2009. Bruce was inspired by travelling through the Australian red desert 18 years ago where roadside campsites punctuated the barren landscape with sprinkler-fed oases of green, each displaying a larger-then-life sculpture such as a giant banana or a sheep. He was intrigued by the way the desert was barren

until it rained and then, as if from nowhere, dormant seeds would burst into bloom. He describes Field of Light as being like a giant surreal campsite banana, an alien installation in the midst of nature. it is made of acrylic stems with fibre optic cables running through them, each topped by a frosted acrylic ball, which lie dormant like dry desert seeds in the daytime but light up at night. each cluster of stems is illuminated by an external projector on a colour wheel as the stems themselves hold no electric power t

22 : in.UK 20 s at all. At the Holburne, there were 5,220 stems of light. To maximise reflections in eric Parry’s glass extension, Munro placed narrow sets of extra stems indoors, topped with clear spheres and fixed in small plinths. Art and lighting design come together in a new installation created by ACT Lighting Design along the Avenue des ChampsÉlysées in Paris where 200 plane trees lining the street have been transformed into light sculptures. each tree is encircled by three rings of LeD lighting that add drama, movement and colour to the natural organic form of the tree. During daylight, the inner lights of each ring emit a soft glow while garlands of small mirrors sparkle as they move freely in the breeze. At dusk, vibrant programmed displays begin, using both the inner and outer lights, continuing until 2am. The entire scheme is programmable to create vastly different effects. Precise shifts in colour and tempo can be created to focus on one tree or to create a sequence or group effect, with over 80 million possible combinations of effects per tree. The concept is a ring as a sign of union and completeness, becoming a symbol of unity between man and nature. ACT Lighting Design’s inspiration comes from respecting the tree as a living being, and so the scheme is shaped by a need to ensure that the trees are not damaged in any way by the dramatic lighting intervention. it will return to the Champs-Élysées for the winter months each year until 2014. A stunning new lighting scheme has been installed on the tower of the new City Hall in Ostrava in the Czech Republic as part of efforts to create a new cultural identity for the country’s third largest city. The scheme,

designed by Petr KolmaÐka, has seen the four fascias of the tower each illuminated with a single energy-saving Anolis RgBCW ArcPad Xtreme, one of the most powerful Anolis LeD flood fixtures available. They evenly light the whole surface area of each elevation despite the challenging texture of the copper that clads the building, built in 1930. These are washed with a selection of beautiful colours including a standard day-to-day selection that is a combination of eight cyan, blue and white scenes based on the colours of Ostrava’s logo and other client specifications. The colour of the tower can also be changed for special occasions such as festivals. The Anolis ArcPad Xtreme is a special outdoor fixture with two independent LeD modules. The LeDs are densely populated, providing an extremely bright light output, and an iP67 rating that means the system

is tough enough to work even if immersed in water. The combination of RgB and white LeDs delivers a particularly good quality of white light. Around the top of the tower’s observation deck are 20 units of Anolis ArcLine Outdoor Optic 40MC (multi-chip) lights that can complement the tower’s fascias. Two Anolis ArcPower 360 drivers power the LeD units, which are controlled by a Cyber Cue system, pre-programmed with the sequences that change every 30 seconds. The lighting is programmed to switch on at dusk and off at dawn, and runs right through the night. A more traditional approach was taken for new lighting at st Paul’s Cathedral in London when lighting designers speirs and Major Associates installed a new scheme in the south Portico. They worked with heritage lighting specialist Dernier & Hamlyn which

in.UK : 21 manufactured a 1.6m high lantern based on a design conceived by the building’s fabric surveyor Martin stancliffe, who was inspired by another Dernier & Hamlyn lantern at the Royal naval College in greenwich. The result is a lantern that not only illuminates the general area from ceramic metal halide downlighting but also gently uplights the south Portico’s dome from six ceramic metal halide aluminium reflector lamps. each of the contemporary fittings has been carefully concealed within the body of the lantern so that the overall effect is one of warm, inviting light when approaching the cathedral. speirs and Major director Mark Major adds: “Clearly it was important to have a lantern that was sensitive to the architecture of the portico. However, the careful design not only allows the integration of additional lighting to achieve the correct atmosphere but also cleverly accommodates a technical solution t

s which could otherwise have had a negative impact on the fabric of the cathedral.”

An extensive portfolio of exterior lighting can be found in the new catalogue from Aurora Lighting, featuring new designs from pathway lighting to floodlighting. new products include the AU-WAL417 aluminium fixed LeD wall light and the AU-PsT110 and AU-PsT120 aluminium bollard lights with clear polycarbonate lens. Classic and contemporary design come together in a new collection of italian-manufactured exterior lighting from Franklite. They include the “semicontemporary” sera range which has matt black die-cast aluminium fittings with opal polycarbonate diffusers to conceal the lamp. This range also includes a half-post and single- and double-headed lamppost. A funky modern alternative is the Lorenz range which includes a lantern in brushed marinegrade stainless steel with a transparent polycarbonate diffuser. Franklite uses

polycarbonate diffusers to avoid the risk of broken glass if the lights are damaged by vandals, proving that practical solutions can be combined with stylish design.

A Week in the Life of… Dorothee Junkin

Monday it’s 6.30am, but it somehow feels much earlier than that. Over a cup of coffee i scan through my overflowing inbox and answer the most pressing emails having just come back from a trip to switzerland. At 9.30am i set off to hunt for some unique furniture pieces in my favourite antique and vintage showrooms. especially when it comes to one-offs, i always prefer to see them in person. A potential new client has just bought a lovely country property just outside of London and asked for suggestions for a few additional key pieces to supplement the current set of absolutely exquisite furniture. With this type of client finding the right pieces could quickly turn into a more extensive redesign. My first stop is Pimlico Road. After a light lunch at Daylesford Organic i tour through more showrooms in Chelsea and Fulham, scribbling notes about new finds in my little black book and taking quick snaps with my iPhone to remind myself of special finds later. i am back in the studio in the evening, scanning through data online and checking the stock of the international antique and vintage dealers i like to source from. My husband, an architect, has a big deadline coming up and is working late too. We both understand the nature and demands of the design profession and can relate to being passionate about what we do. Tonight we won’t be able to, but most nights we have dinner together and talk about our day. t

28 : in.HeR LiFe

s tuesday i spend the first half of the morning catching up with my emails. i have received two enquiries from potential residential clients and a follow-up from a commercial client with whom i’ve been discussing the redesign of a club, bar and restaurant project in Central London. As requested a meeting this afternoon was hastily arranged and luckily fitted in with my schedule as i already have another meeting later with a client for whom Architecta just finished a private residence in st. John‘s Wood. it’s one of the last meetings for a wonderful apartment in a listed building bordering Regent’s Park and i need to walk with the client and the

A recently completed residential project in Highgate contractor through the property to check if the snagging list has been dealt with sufficiently. it’s always the little things in the end that require particular attention. i hate the idea of a client walking away and being not 100% happy with the result. i really do try to exceed my clients‘ expectations as they could recommend Architecta to their friends or aquaintances and that’s a great way to gain future projects. early evening i meet up with my husband at Bond street and we go to an art exhibition in Cork street. i like to be in-the-know about new artists and their work, as the London

art scene is very interesting and often inspiring too. Wednesday Yesterday’s meeting regarding the commercial project went well. i sit down to go through my notes and try to get my head around the requirements while in the back of my head the first design ideas already start to take form. The phone rings. A favourite contractor of mine who completed stunning properties for celebrities in film and fashion, and with whom i recently worked on a large project in Highgate, t

Highgate

st John’s Wood s north London, has a question regarding some last outstanding aspects. i drop what i have been doing, as i always try to look after the good contractors and suppliers i work with. it’s paramount to be able to rely on them when dealing with demanding clients. in the afternoon i call the photographer, with whom my PR has scheduled a portrait session for the next day, to confirm the details. At the very last minute we find out that the location for the shoot is unavailable the next day. We have to postpone the shoot to Friday. i make a few phone calls and adjust my schedule for the next two days accordingly. thursday Today it’s time to sit down and start working on a concept design proposal for the commercial project. Three floors of

club, bar and restaurant space need some thorough consideration. The morning flies by sketching, noting ideas and pulling material samples out of the material library. i end up sitting in the centre of a creative chaos, but i feel like i got a solid strategy in place. i could use more material options, i’m thinking something bold with a contemporary edge! i decide to make a spontaneous trip to my favourite showrooms. i love browsing through endless piles of materials hunting for treasures for current and upcoming projects and as i tend to design unique spaces for every client. i also source a lot internationally. Recently i went to new York for a client to coordinate a custom table made by a renown metal sculptor and on to Los Angeles to meet a specialist furniture manufacturer for a custom sideboard and side tables. Friday i get up early, gather my things for the

photo shoot and meet the photographer in London’s east end. i am excited and a bit nervous as well. it turns out there was no need to be, as the photographer, who has worked with many celebrities, put me at ease straight away and i soon feel very confident posing for the shoot. it’s actually quite fun and we get a lot of looks from passers-by. After the photo shoot i am back in the studio. Time flies by again. i meant to look over the last tax quarter and to get the information to the tax office, but i got side-tracked by some last minute project coordination and all of a sudden it’s 7pm. i need to rush for dinner with a friend from new York, who was in town for business and will fly back tomorrow. My husband and i take him for a lovely dinner at Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell and then for drinks at the Zetter Townhouse. it’s early on saturday morning, when we finally get back home.

Saturday i usually try to carve out some free time on the weekends. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Today i head out around mid-morning to meet with a potential private client. i find most private clients are very busy, they travel a lot and have properties abroad. if their time doesn’t allow, i have to have meetings early in the mornings, later in the evenings or any time at the weekend. i meet the couple at their recently purchased property close to Kew gardens. The property

The stunning living room in Highgate definitely needs some refurbishment, but it has loads of character and could be turned into a real gem. Walking through the house and garden all three of us get more and more excited as we go along and conclude that i shall submit a first proposal and fee structure within a few days. My husband has meanwhile met with friends at Borough Market and i manage to join them for a late lunch at 3pm. We enjoy a wonderful afternoon with friends we haven’t seen in a while. in the evening

we meet with ex-colleagues at the hidden experimental Cocktail Club in Chinatown. Design ideas seem to come to life so much easier when one takes breaks and is not trying too hard. Sunday i am up early again and start assembling a first layout concept for the mood boards for the commercial project while my husband sleeps in. i actually don’t mind working right now, as i am very excited about my ideas and can’t wait to show them to the t

st John’s Wood s client. sometimes the week is so busy with coordination and site visits and clients, contractors and suppliers calling all day, that one doesn’t get to actually do some proper design work until it’s evening or weekend. When possible, sunday is my day to recharge. My husband and i try to go for brunch, see exhibitions and visit friends outside of London, but while projects are bubbling i can‘t help getting stuck in now. i love what i do.

Warming up in style

The energy tariff increases in the autumn will mean that millions of us are facing larger than ever bills for our winter gas and electricity, in spite of the mild weather we’ve had so far this year

D

emand for central heating this year has fallen because of the relatively warm winter. However, while we are clearly using less gas, the sharp increase in tariffs means there is little financial respite for people.

As fuel costs rise, along with a huge increase in our concerns about the environment, clients are looking at more energy-efficient and eco-friendly heating options.

Bisque’s new Blok range One company to capitalise on this trend with an innovative solution is Cheshire-based heating company, Discrete Heat, who have designed and manufactured an eco-friendly, energy-saving system called Thermaskirt. Thermaskirt replaces skirting boards and radiators in one, working with existing conventional boilers as well as renewables such as solar, ground source and air source heat pumps. t

40 : in.UK in the demand for more energy-efficient heating products, is world-renowned Bisque Radiators. There are few companies more well-known for their beautiful designer radiators, and Bisque has been amongst the first to combine energy efficiency with stylish design. Bisque is introducing a new generation of radiators for 2012. Made from re-cycled aluminium, these are the first radiators to combine sleek italian design with energy efficient technology. Blok and ellisse are just two of the new radiator ranges to be available nationally from February 2012. With a low water content, they use less energy to heat up and are faster to respond to changes in temperature. Blok is a neat and sophisticated model radiator from on-trend rectangular columns with a minimal wall to front-face projection.

Bisque’s Blok towel rail

s Unlike radiators and underfloor heating, it is a simple, inconspicuous wet heating system that doesn’t cost a fortune to install or run, and doesn’t take up any useable wall space.

is kept to a minimum, and costly warranty claims are avoided as the system is entirely ‘above ground’ facilitating simple repair and maintenance.

Recently installed in several ‘RetroFit for the Future’ trials, Thermaskirt enables renewables such as heat pumps and solar thermal systems to be installed in existing buildings. it can connect onto the existing plumbing circuits, eliminating the need for radiators or impractical under floor heating.

several system integrators are now offering Thermaskirt as part of their installer package, which in turn is encouraging homeowners to take up the government grants and Feed in Tariffs on offer. Fully compliant with Bs-en 442, Thermaskirt carries the Ce mark and with the correct boiler and control system, fuels savings of up to 25% are possible.

Disruption to the infrastructure of the house

Another company who has seen an increase

ellisse is made from elegant, compact elliptical tubes that provide a high heat output. This means the radiator can be slimmer than most, which is handy where wall space is at a premium. The benefits of aluminium radiator construction include: • space-saving: sizes can be much smaller than typical radiators but with the same heat output • Lower running costs: low water content means less energy is needed from the boiler to heat the water in the heating system • Radiators can be used with low temperature systems such as heat pumps • greater response to thermostat control

Quick to heat up Less environmental impact as aluminium can be repeatedly re-cycled

Bisque’s Head of Design and Marketing, Barbara Payne commented: “2012 will see a move towards more energy efficient but stylish products. There has always been a demand for energy efficient radiators but until now it has meant a compromise on style. With our new range we are delighted to offer the iconic design we are known for alongside cutting edge technology.”

Focus on the outdoors

Although it’s only February, our thoughts are already turning to the great outdoors as clients are starting to think about redesigning and revamping their outside spaces

T

he year on year increase in the trend to turn garden space into an all-year-round useable space which becomes an extension of the living area has prompted a plethora of new launches and innovations in the garden furniture industry. Where the choice of garden furniture was once limited to a few table and chairs in plastic designs that put function before style, today there is a huge selection of different outdoor furniture in beautiful materials

gloster’s Bloc range of outdoor furniture which is as stylish as anything within the home. According to the Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association (LOFA), the major trends for 2012 are solidly based on the environment, with a focus on ethical manufacturing processes, packaging and labour issues. As a result, LOFA has ofďŹ cially launched its new environmental trademark, Made Aware. The Made Aware scheme is intended to enable LOFA members to progressively improve the environmental

and social impacts of the products they sell. This award requires outdoor furniture manufacturers and suppliers to prove that they are taking progressive action to reduce their environmental impact and to improve the welfare of the people who make their products. each year these suppliers will have to show they are continuing to make a worthwhile improvement, and have to pass stringent testing by a panel of independent judges to ensure they can keep the prestigious Made Aware label. t

gloster’s new Riva range s in terms of other trends for 2012, the increasing ability to use outdoor furniture all year round due to outdoor heaters has seen a demand for better weatherproofing. For leading outdoor furniture manufacturer gloster, this has meant upholstered, yet highly waterproof outdoor lounge items. new materials and innovative technology are driving this trend, with fully upholstered yet highly weatherproof outdoor furniture now becoming a practical alternative to the ever-popular woven styles . gloster pioneered this trend in 2009 by launching its first Outdoor Lounge Collection, Cloud; a completely upholstered but 100 per cent waterproof outdoor sofa system.

Outdoor Lounge products were designed and engineered to be left outside all year round and in all weathers without any need to cover or protect. The fabrics used for seat and back cushions is Leisuretex® – similar to a traditional PVC sling, but with the addition of 100 per cent polypropylene yarns within the weave to offer increased comfort. An additional backing layer adds to the virtually waterproof nature of this material and waterproof sealing tape on every seam, ensures no water can enter the cushions. The cushions themselves are designed to be virtually waterproof, so no water can enter into the cushion filling. in the unlikely case that any water does enter, the design of the cushions – including a reticulated foam core,

The Linea range from gloster mesh bases and well concealed Velcro seals – allows for it to drain away quickly. For the 2012 season, gloster has launched three new collections in the UK – Asta, Linea and Riva. All of the new ranges are designed and built to stay outdoors all year long.

Breaking down the walls Open plan living – once the preserve of the urban trendsetter – is now being replicated across the land as today’s householders shun the 20th century traditions of designated dining rooms, hallways and kitchens, says Simon Hamilton, international director at the BIID

A

ccording to an analysis of Britain’s housing stock by Lloyds TsB Home insurance for its My Favourite Room competition, one in five (21%) homeowners have taken a sledgehammer to their home’s walls in the last 10 years, while an equal proportion have similar plans afoot. To create social spaces more conducive to modern day lifestyles, a third (32%) have sacrificed a separate dining room, 18% have repurposed a garage and 12% have ditched a single-purpose kitchen. While certain rooms are being lost, new ones are creeping onto household particulars. Kitchen/dining rooms – the hallmark of open plan – have grown in popularity by 50% in a generation. Thirty percent of today’s homes now have one with many using it as the social hub of their house – 48% to entertain guests, 29% as a child’s play area and 27% to watch television. The allure of open plan pulls regardless of a property’s age. A third of period property owners who’ve done work, have added an open plan kitchen and dining room, a higher proportion than any other era of home.

Current planning applications lodged with eight district councils underscores our obsession with changing the layout of our homes. A third (35%) of planned works involve opening up internal spaces and more homes are set for change in the near future with research among homeowners identifying 19% will be tearing down walls in their homes.

Recognising that open spaces will make their property more saleable, 10% have spent over £35k adapting their properties with 5% investing over £50k. The work on their property hasn’t always gone smoothly though and one in five (19%) had damage caused during the building work, averaging £8k.

The kitchen breakfast room is not the only addition being made to the country’s housing stock. Also featuring in today’s homes are the utility room (26%), the ensuite (23%), study (20%), wet room (3%), games room/den (6%), and even gym (2%).

The findings are released as Lloyds TsB Home insurance celebrates its 10th Anniversary of being voted Britain’s most popular insurer by launching My Favourite Room (www.lloydstsbmyfavourietroom. co.uk), a competition giving house-proud Britons the chance to show off their favourite room and win £10,000.

“Property particulars are starting to look very different,” says simon Hamilton, member and international Director at the British institute of interior Design. “Houses, especially older properties, were designed with people’s lives in mind, with set rooms for set activities, but as times change so does what we want from our homes. With our increasingly hectic lifestyles, convenience and sociability have become key – which is why kitchen diners and games rooms have grown in popularity. in the next 10 years, the majority of houses will be designed in this style.”

Paula Llewellyn, Head of Marketing services at Lloyds TsB Home insurance said: “Rather than moving, people are adjusting their own property to create their dream home and the living space they need and it’s clear to see that open plan living is what modern families want. To celebrate being Britain’s most popular home insurer, we’ve launched our My Favourite Room competition so Britons can show off their best loved room in the home they have created and we are seeing lots of entries showing open plan living.”

Patriotic worktop tested by top gymnast Kitchen worktops specialist, granite Transformations, has celebrated Olympic year by creating a Union Jack-adorned island unit, clad in its tough, hardwearing, diamond-polished material. it then invited Britain’s top gymnast, Beth Tweddle, to show off its patriotic piece by performing a series of rhythmic routines on and around the unit. As a test of the material’s strength and resilience, Beth’s energetic vaulting, tumbling, jumps and acrobatics put it through its paces, although granite Transformations would expect far more severe treatment in normal household and commercial use. Made from post-consumer recycled wine, beer and mineral water bottles, with an element of polymer resin for strength and a patented Flexiweb™ backing for flexibility, it outperforms most other finishing materials like natural or engineered stone and solid synthetics. But what made this whole exercise possible, is the distinctive slimline profile and exceptionally light weight of granite Transformations’ surfaces. granite Transformations wishes Beth all the best in her Olympic endeavours. Beautiful sculpture puts you in the shade Like trees growing and spreading their tentacle-like branches over glass surfaces, this sculpture belongs to both the mineral and the vegetal world, creating a dialogue between the garden and the kitchen. The shading device is made from hemp and flax, which has a strong tradition in the history of rope making for sea vessels. The material withstands harsh external environmental conditions, is environmentally friendly, visually rich and engages the senses of touch and smell. The forms, created by French artist Aude Franjou, are created by twisting a flax strand around a heart of hemp, and are woven onto a folding steel frame. Composite Fibreglass Mouldings will be showcasing its noTile panels, an innovative alternative to standard tiling systems. t

58 : in.sHOW s Unlike standard tiles, noTile incorporates the grout line as an integral part of the fibreglass panels. With no grout, the imitation tiles are easier to clean and there is less opportunity for mould to grow and for the tiles to discolour. For maximum hygienic performance, the panels are protected with a silver antimicrobial additive called Biomaster which reportedly reduces the growth of bacteria and mould by up to 99.9 per cent over a 24-hour period. Other exhibitors in the Décor and Design section will include furniture companies Burgess Furniture, Capricorn imports, Dining Chairs UK, excalibur Furniture, Lloyd Loom Furniture, Oceans Outdoor Furniture, Pekalp and scandinavian selection, mouldings specialist nMC Copley, lighting companies Photec Lighting and United Hotel Lighting, dance floor manufacturer Portable Floormaker, bar manufacturer Astore Harrison, Axminster Carpets, sound and lighting specialist CgA integration and outside heating specialist Heat Outdoors. Amina Technologies will be at Hotelympia to showcase its invisible loud speaker solution that has been used by interior designers and architects around the world. it specialises in distributed mode loudspeakers, or DML panels, which use vibrations in the same way as musical instruments to create evenly distributed sound from speakers concealed behind plaster. it has been used in many of the world’s top hotels such as Dorchester Collection’s Coworth Park in Berkshire in a project led by CgA integration. Hotelympia also features seminars and competitions, including the annual innovation Awards which recognise the best new product launches throughout the

invisible loud speakers from Amina Technologies with CgA integration show. The 2012 awards will see finalists pitch their products behind closed doors in a Dragons’ Den-style arena in front of a panel of hospitality industry leaders, in six categories including design, equipment, and technology. The winner of the new Hotelympia Design Award for the UK’s most luxurious and desirable hotel suite will be announced at the show on February 27. The finalists are the Royal suite at Mandarin Oriental, London, designed by RPW Design; the Royal suite at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, London, designed by Kuan Chew; and Pavilion 1 at Lime Wood Hotel in the new Forest. The judging panel includes Channel 5’s Hotel inspector Alex Polizzi, Rocco Forte Collection’s director of design Olga Polizzi, Radisson edwardian Hotels’ head of design Michael Attenborough, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin chief executive Robert Cook, interior Design Association chairman stephan Oberwegner, and Jenny gibbs, the former president of the
