Welcome to the February issue of in.Design!
We always love the opportunity to get to know some of the great names in our industry, and in Week in the Life on p06 we spend some time with a Past-President of the BiiD, the interior designer Diana Yakeley. Diana was commissioned to showcase the best of British design during the London 2012 Olympics, and was recently awarded with the OBe in recognition of services to the interior design profession.
Bathrooms are the focus of our in.Vogue on p16. A well-designed bathroom is the centrepiece to any home, and new trends in suites and taps are always exciting! Rose-tinted taps are our favourite new idea, this warm hue adds glamour and sophistication as well as a fabulous fashion up-date.
interior designer Maurizio Pellizzoni founded his consultancy Maurizio Pellizzoni Ltd in 2007, and is based in the fantastic Chelsea Design Quarter. A recent project for Colbourns to create their new luxury carpet and rug showroom is the topic of in.Brief on p24, where Maurizio explains how he met the brief for this flagship retail space.
if you have a project you’d like to share with our readers let me know, we’d love to hear all about it!

A Week In The Life Of Diana Yakeley OBE
in.HER LIFE : 07 Past-President of the British Institute of Interior Design and multi award-winning designer Diana Yakeley has enjoyed a wide-ranging career spanning over thirty-five years, embracing interior, garden and furniture design for projects in Britain and internationally. Her work covers all aspects of contemporary design, both residential and commercial, including a commission from the British Government during the London 2012 Olympics to showcase the best of British design to world leaders, policy makers and investors. Diana has recently been presented with an OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2016, in recognition for services to the interior design profession. Trained at the Inchbald School of Design in 1979, Diana commenced practice in 1981 with Yakeley Associates.
Monday A monthly site meeting with all the consultants on a complex project that is nearing completion; the protective coverings are finally off and we can see the silky polished plaster walls and book-matched marble bathrooms, smoked oak floors free from dust and site clutter. I am rather a ‘paint it all white’ sort of person, but this project has demanded a more aspirational approach with calming soft natural finishes that will set off the client’s art works. This project has been demanding as there has been so much effort put in to concealing all the services and keeping decoration to a minimum, but the finishes all work really well and will allow the client to stamp his personality on the interior. We are particularly pleased with the minimal white HiMacs kitchen we designed which really has been a test of all involved to achieve the level of rigour required. The quote that ‘God is in the details’ is one our
practice firmly believes in. No matter how brilliant the concept is, it is the hinges, joints, door details and that tight tolerance that makes the design. This project has ended with all the consultant team pleased to have worked together so well – not always typical of the final stages of building projects!
08 : in.HER LIFE Dash straight to the hairdresser for some much needed pampering as Tuesday is rather an unusual day… Tuesday Set alarm again as today I am going to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE for services to the UK interior design profession. Very proud that the profession is recognised for those who are highly qualified, act with integrity and commit to continuing their professional knowledge through their Institute. It is rather appropriate that the Palace is to undergo a huge renovation programme next year, but I do hope they keep the rather wonderful original Thomas Crapper & Co ‘thunder boxes’ in the loos! For all my cynicism, the whole ceremony is flawless and impressive. I met extraordinary people from all walks of life and cultures, and discovered that even very brave people are nervous when meeting royalty. After months of worrying what to wear, hat or no hat, heels or flats, I find I am not nervous as a very delightful HRH the Duke of Cambridge shakes my hand and I am the proud possessor of a rather colourful medal. Exit right and my medal is whisked away, boxed up and returned with my confiscated handbag and gloves. I do think the proposed renovation work would be a really good opportunity to introduce some good modern British art and design, as well as updated M&E. As David Hockney is to design a stained glass window in Westminster Abbey to celebrate the Queen’s reign, we may be pleasantly surprised. Wednesday Back to earth with a day of catching up on emails and general paperwork. I

We are all enthused by the possibility of making something very special and the brochure soon becomes a hard-back book with wonderful day and night aerial shots, maps and photography of places of interest, black linen bindings and reassuringly expensive paper. We are very lucky to have clients who really appreciate quality and detail and understand the rather convoluted processes that have to be gone through to achieve what they want. In the afternoon I attend a Professional Practice committee meeting at BIID and discuss the need for inclusive and accessible future-proof design to be promoted and made an essential part of all designs, by working with the Construction Industry Council to achieve this. Friday On site to attend acoustic tests in an apartment block as required by the landlords. Wonderfully eccentric contraptions brought in and a series of noises rather similar to having an MRI scan are sent through floors and ceilings. Clients are often surprised that there are so many hoops to jump through even on the most straightforward small projects, not to mention the time involved in gaining permissions. As we have to attend a dinner to taste rather fine White Burgundies later in the evening thanks to a generous client, we realise that we should take the afternoon off and decide to walk back to the office via the galleries around Cork Street and window shop. with our Less is More philosophy. A first world dilemma as they say, but then this has been a rather first world sort of week. No week is ever the same, each project different and each client puts one on a new learning curve and you never know what the future will bring. We love our work but it can be unpredictable! Saturday Set the alarm for 5.30 to catch the train to Leicester where I am to mentor groups of university students in the BIID Design Challenge taking place at De Monfort University. St Pancras station looks almost Piranesian in the early light without the usual commuter crowds but it is still 6.30am and I need strong coffee! The challenge is to design temporary facilities for refugees within the University that can then be reused in another facility. This is a no-CAD day and the project ideas presentation must be ready for judging by 3.30pm. The judges are to include two former refugees and the head of a charity that helps refugees when they arrive in the UK. Brilliant response from the students
who all think about the cultural needs as well as the practical needs of anyone arriving with nothing but the clothes they stand up in. University of Hertfordshire are the triumphant winners, and we collapse exhausted onto the train home with canned Gin and Tonic and crisps. Sunday Discuss the logistics of the week ahead with my husband Stephen over lunch at The Wolseley. The interior of this glorious former car showroom never fails to inspire, with its wonderful marble floor and vaulted ceilings, soft lighting and black and white theme. I feel I should be wearing a Vionnet dress
from the ‘20s instead of jeans, to match the grand European CafĂŠ atmosphere. We justify lunching at well designed places as part of on-going visual reference collection! This is not as flippant as it may seem as we often find inspiration in details from the past which can be used in new ways. A Palladian staircase hidden away in the Academia gallery in Venice proved to be the perfect design inspiration for a Beirut project that needed a modern version of the cantilevered spiral stair (picture, p08). www.yakeley.com

O
ne of our most popular properties in Devon, Stowford Manor, is a Grade II listed building and a firm favourite thanks to its celebrity interior designer, Fiona Wilson. This opulent six bedroom manor house secured an impressive number of bookings and high revenue levels throughout 2016, as our discerning guests love quality and look for history, design and luxury when looking for their perfect holiday property. However, there are a few things to consider if you take on a listed property as one of
your projects and wish to turn it into a holiday home. Obtaining permission to do any work on a listed building can be difficult and time consuming, as each listed building is unique – so if you have a client with a listed building, make sure they have permission from the local planning authority before you make any changes. When deciding on what style to use, the era of when the property was built plays an important part in determining the flooring, fireplaces, cornicing and ceiling height, and all should be preserved and showcased wherever possible. Character and charm can
be lost if these features are removed. History books, museums, and postcards relating to the period are great sources of inspiration and will help you manage the space, colours and fabric used throughout the property. Salvage yards are also excellent places to go to find doors, handles and other architectural features in keeping with the style of the property. Get in touch with us today on 0333 920 5797 to see how holiday letting can work for you.

Working together with its Interior Design
Consultant Charlotte Conway, Brilliant Lighting’s Design Director Iain Shaw, and Grech and Grech’s designer Donna Grech, Heritage reveals the textures, colours and finishes you could be embracing this year. “The rich emerald greens and moody greys that we saw last year are continuing their reign across décor and furniture, but with opulent pearl grey, bronze, midnight blue and teal materials also being added for more depth,” said Charlotte. “For a unique way to add deeper shades to the bathroom space, opt for timeless pieces with small
finishing details such as Heritage Bathrooms’ limited edition Glastonbury Midnight Blue taps, which combine a rich midnight blue handle with a traditionally curved basin tap. In smaller bathroom spaces, these details make a real impact and allow for a quick and easy on-trend update to an existing suite.” In bathrooms with darker palettes like this, complementary and well thought-out lighting is essential to make the most of the space and draw focus to key areas.

22 : in.VOGUE “Lighting plays a crucial role in changing the ambience and utility of the room, such as taking you from a refreshing early morning shower to enveloping you in a relaxing spa-like evening soak,” added Iain. “When updating your bathroom with new products and decor, you need to think about areas you want to emphasise and how lighting can help to draw the eye to
your favourite pieces. For example, soft uplighting positioned around the base of the bathing area is a subtle yet effective way to ensure the bath is a focal point, whilst also producing a relaxing glow.” As the trend for creating more glamorous bathrooms continues to grow, it’s all about adding embellishment to your space and
accessorising with stylish and opulent finishing touches. Heritage Bathrooms has collaborated with British designer and illustrator Eleanore Longhurst and Charlotte Conway to unveil a stunning new range of design-led Limited Edition taps. Inspired by trends gathered across an 18-month period, the new collection is made up of four different designs across four different tap ranges. From on-trend colourways through to intricate inset detailing, the new additions to the Heritage line up offer homeowners quick and affordable updates for the bathroom space, that ooze statement styling. “Homeowners looking for a quick bathroom revamp can now get creative with brassware,” said Charlotte. “Let taps and showering become the jewellery of your space, perfectly accessorising the rest of your bathroom outfit!” The unique new styles feature across Heritage’s popular deco-inspired Gracechurch taps, the traditional Glastonbury taps and the sleek Hemsby range. The one-off design which has been created by Eleanore Longhurst has been complemented with a brand new tap range called Lymington. Lustrous tones such as warm polished coppers and rose golds are an easy way to add a golden glow, and the Hemsby Rose Gold taps are perfect for creating a sumptuous impact.

Based in the Chelsea Design Quarter, Maurizio Pellizzoni Ltd has many of Europe’s best suppliers and services on its doorstep and over the years Maurizio has fostered relationships with the most highly skilled builders, architects and specialists in the field. olbourns is a luxury carpet and rug company with projects ranging from listed buildings and hotels to large-scale contemporary residential spaces and new build apartments on an international scale. after acquiring a brand new 1940 sq. ft. showroom space, and as advocators of Maurizio’s work, it was a natural choice to enlist his skillset to design the new space. Colbourns work closely with interior designers to create beautiful, bespoke rugs and carpets for all types of projects, emulating the surroundings to develop a piece that is perfectly integrated within the interior setting. Colbourns product displays were originally spread across three very different showrooms, so it was important to create a space that would accommodate the extensive product range in one environment for each customer’s journey.
26 : in.BRIEF
the brief was simply to create a luxury showroom that reflected the new brand image and for this to be translated in the space. they needed a space to celebrate their different manufacturing sectors; hand tufted and machine-made products. they wanted to create a studio for the design team that encompassed the way the team works together and envisaged a space that would be a pleasure to walk into with clean lines, a riot of colour and inspiration, with a library that designers could use as their resource.
Maurizio set out to create a contemporary style using simple materials, from the polished concrete floor to the exposed ventilation systems for an industrial setting. he combined this with an art gallery concept by removing all of the rugs from the floor in the main area and installing a grand scale rug near the entrance, with an abundance of samples running along the full length of the showroom on painted white shelves that serve as a natural background. the interchangeable rugs that hang on the opposite wall beautifully determine the
ambiance of the showroom from season to season. the base of the interior scheme was designed to be as soft as possible and Maurizio chose a simple palette so not to detract the attention away from the focal point of the rugs on display. the customer journey has been a key focus for Maurizio’s design. the space has been carefully divided to strip back the clutter that had encroached on previous showroom spaces but more importantly, to direct the customer on a journey for choosing a new rug for their home or for the many

Private residential and trade clients are now able to choose their products in a very well organised, calm and inviting environment. Premium materials harnessing a rough luxe aesthetic from concrete and marble to the industrial fabric that upholsters the furniture has resulted in a showroom design that eloquently marries industrial cool with luxurious elegance. The entrance desk was a challenging aspect to the design as Maurizio wanted to create something that welcomed customers in from Lots Road, whilst installing a luxurious feature. He chose a beautiful marble from Spain to clad the desk, which is the first thing seen by clients entering the showroom. All of the joinery was meticulously designed by Maurizio to display an array of samples that were easily accessible. As part of the customer journey, geometric lines characterise the space for a clean look that keeps the drawers symmetrical with the shelving displays. The joinery was spray painted in a matt finish to keep the consistency of an industrial look. Grey was chosen for the work surfaces to visually create a division and to also highlight the usable space against the white displays. “Having worked with Maurizio as one of our own clients, we knew that he would be the perfect interior designer to bring our new design vision to life,” said Eloise Holland, Creative Director at Colbourns. “Maurizio took everything into consideration, from the matters that were important to incorporate with how we work as a business to how the customers journey would be guided through our showroom.
“His attention to detail has been extremely impressive from the initial joinery plans to the final finishing touches. His care, creativity and problem solving during the entire project was fantastic and I can’t rate him highly enough.” Maurizio has streamlined the original three showrooms into one beautiful space that has the ability to showcase their entire range to their diverse customer demographics. Two large mobile islands displaying pom-pom samples and a separate meeting area allow for multiple clients to sit in a comfortable space to discuss their needs and look at all of their options. The existing floors were
stripped back to the concrete and carefully polished and buffed. For the two internal design studios, Maurizio chose an industrial carpet to create a visual division from the main showroom. The main challenge was to fit the different sectors of the business into one showroom. To carve up the floor space was the first challenge, but a very open dialogue between Colbourns and Maurizio has meant that they have used each square metre to the best of its ability. A glass partition wall was installed for the staff office area, which has created a more quiet and relaxing environment to co-work in, with the transparency of the showroom creating a feeling of being in the expansive space. With the customer journey at the core of Maurizio’s design, the new showroom
harnesses a gallery style in a calm, elegant environment that’s much more easy to navigate around. Creating a boutique feel in a large space, the new design allows for Colbourns wide portfolio to be brought together under one roof to serve both trade and consumer customers effectively. Colbourns very much wanted the final finish to have a gallery feel, but an interactive gallery, where everything can be touched, moved and altered when they needed.
This has been achieved in every sense from the riot of colours in the samples and rugs creating inspiration, to the moveable furniture and the clean lines of the joinery that maintains a structure, creating a perfect balance in the showroom. “Overall we have achieved the brief that we set out to do,” added Eloise. “During the finishing stages of hanging rugs, storing boxes, putting away samples and even

Maurizio has high standards, which worked well for us in our quest for a high-end, luxury showroom. “We love the industrial nature of the ceiling and flooring in Maurizio’s ‘Shoreditch Loft’ project which was something that we wanted to emulate in our new showroom. We think that this comes across quite well in our finished space, where we have chosen to expose the tracking, lighting and heating/
